Linspan Branslin, the Prophet of the Flame and of the Wind, is dead.
His death at the hands of the ern was not in vain, however, because he learned the secret of the Magic beforehand, and he was somehow able to pass his power to the great swordsman, Ayrim Iylin. Iylin and his friends, however, have been captured by the wicked Vilantu, the dragon that is also the Prophet of the Void.
The quest for the eighth power comes to an end here, but Ayrim will have to uncover the secrets of the Forgotten Kingdom, face an army of ern, and challenge the extraordinary might of Vilantu if he is going to get out alive.
Good conclusion to the historical fantasy series, and I love love love the way author Paul Lytle turned my expectations around at the end. All that world-building for the story's religious belief system… without dropping what would be a major spoiler, let me just say what it turns out to be is perfect. Nicely done, and a satisfying conclusion.
Like the rest of the series, there are some swapped-out words (passed and past, for example) and a few random returns where they shouldn't be. There are also some strange inserts and mixed-up places, for example in Chapter 13: "The alloy, of course, would not be budged, but centuries of grime slowly peeled away with the constant work.
They would not have
It had help up when
At last he backed away, revealing his own markings."
And in Chapter 24, unfortunately right at the climax of the series: "Ayrim pushed himself to his feet, and he raised his hand, weakly sending wind at the dragon. scoffed at the attempt, and charged in, his head low and his claws out.
But the wind was mere distraction, sidestepping the powerful claws of the monster. neck, and the dragon rose up in pain.
and the swordsman swung around unexpectedly,
It was his chance."
And so on, with sentence fragments scattered around. It's a good fight scene and an excellent conclusion, marred by poor QC.
The solid ending does, thankfully, leave enough undone for another series. Count me as hoping, at least. We'll say 4.5 stars, with a half knocked off for the errors.
