I actually really enjoyed this book. I thought it was going to be awful as I needed to read it for school but it was actually super sweet!

I just loved Hughie and Lucia’s relationship throughout the book. Childhood sweethearts. I thought it was so cute when Rosinella risked her relationship with Massimo for them. I loved the ending and how they got married the same way Rosinella and Massimo did.

A raw and honest exploration of a complicated family who experience love, grief, and friendship. I found this to be a very interesting read and appreciated the wartime Scottish setting which is always appreciated. As this is centrally a drama, the book goes into depth as to who the characters are and what they want. Marie Di Mambro asks the question 'What is the worst thing that could happen to this character?' and really isn't afraid to hold back. I particularly found Lucia and Hughie's relationship to be very fun to read, and really found myself taking a liking to Bridget. Despite the pain she experiences, she always put other characters' wellbeing, especially her brother Hughie, above her own. I think the book does feel flat in some areas like making clear what time period it was set. You could remove all of the mentions of years and it feels like it could take place today. Overall a decent read, just wish I wasn't studying it for school. 6.5/10.
