On the morning of the 9th of July, Michael Wells wakes to find that something incredible has happened during the all his sins are written across his face and body. He has become a walking dictionary of his deepest, darkest desires. And he is not alone. Everyone in the world has been similarly affected. But poor Michael has been given extra. There is a big MURDER over his heart; but he has never murdered anyone in his life. Surely, there must be some mistake? Or is someone playing a trick on him?
Meanwhile, across town, Eva Loh wakes to discover the same thing, only, instead of hiding away like Michael, she decides to go out and document everything that she can with her trusty camera.
We follow the adventures of Michael and Eva as they fight to survive in a world where every sin is revealed. Society crumbles around them and from the ashes new societies and cultures begin to emerge. Some are good, others evil, and some that are not what they appear to be. Danger is everywhere. But both Michael and Eva have important parts to play in this terrible new world, and they are not always the parts that they would have expected. It's not quite the apocalypse, but something different.
Based outside of London, I am a writer of fantasy for (almost) all, and thrillers for adults. Sometimes I also dabble in kids books, being a big kid at heart myself. I love books (of course), cinema (both high and low), Scotch whisky (Islay please), cigars (yeah, I know), sushi and juggling cats (when I can catch 'em).
PS: I was just kidding about juggling cats. Honestly.
'Red Written' is an imaginative, well-crafted dystopian thriller with a unique premise. I don’t write spoilers so I won’t describe the story other than to say it had lively characters, a good storyline, kept me turning pages and had a satisfying denouement. The conclusion is slightly odd, but was intended by the author (I checked), so you may find it either irritating or a masterstroke, depending on your perspective.
If you enjoy novels about the breakdown of society and the possible outcomes – as I do - then this, unlike so many 'dystopian' novels, is intelligent and one worth reading. Recommended.
'Red Written' is the story of Michael as he awakens on the day the sins of every human on earth appear on their faces for the world to see.
I thought this was a really cool idea and it was handled well, though it unravelled a bit differently than I thought it would. It's definitely an entertaining read with plenty of interesting points raised. I wasn't too sure where the story was going at times but it was a fun ride throughout, never got boring and was actually quite thought provoking.
There's a lot of horror in the situations that arise and there's some shocks along the way too. There were a lot of characters passing through the story but apart from the main two the only ones who made any impression on me were Lee and Donna. I liked Eva but only sort-of liked Michael as he was pretty reckless with the safety of other people. One minor thing that bugged me was there were a few moments where I was left questioning why characters did one thing instead of another. It didn't spoil my enjoyment though and I quickly got back into the story!
All in all this is a thought-provoking, entertaining horror read. I would advise reading it carefully so that the twist when it comes makes the proper impact! Recommended for horror/apocalypse fans!
The story of humankind being 'unmasked' by forces unknown and having their sins written on their faces for all to see is a brilliant concept and the story itself is descriptive and interesting. As usual, we humans fail to pull together and there is civil unrest, to put it mildly. People attack each other, murder and make judgement on those whose sins are the worst but there are those 'in power' who escape simply because they can, their former jobs and status giving them a certain leverage. Most hide behind masks, refusing to reveal themselves to others and families are broken apart by revelations of adultery and worse. Paranoia, mistrust and self preservation are rife and Michael, the main character, is caught up in some of the worst of it.
The twist at the end is very good and this is a novel which will make you sit and wonder just what your own face might reveal...
As I started this book several biblical quotes ran through my head, I mean what if all of our sins suddenly were written on our forehead or other parts of our body? This is a great idea for a book and the author did an amazing job bringing this story to life. The reader follows Michael Wells and Eva Loh as each deals with this terrifying thing that has happened. The author has a terrific writing style that tells a story readers are going to love to sink their teeth into. I definitely recommend this suspense thriller that takes readers on a journey like no other.
I would give this one a 4.5 but when that is not an option I always round up. Fast paced page turner. Also smart with a really cool hook. I had a tiny problem with the ending. Read it and let me know what you think.
Nice concept, well written and quite enthralling. It would have got five stars, apart from I thought it a little drawn out. One worth reading, I'm know actively searching the rest of P.T.Mayes books.
Very interesting premise, though it ends on a rather ambiguous note (which is mostly okay, but there were a few things I thought were not ambiguous but just unclear). Also could have really benefited from a copy edit, but I was enjoying the story enough to overlook that.
What you have here is an example of a great idea written badly. There's not enough information about the effect the sins appearance has on the people are not clear. Society breaking down in less then a day is just not realistic.
