Too Bright for Murder: Ruth Finlay mysteries Book 2: by Isobel Blackthorn
This is the second book in the Ruth Finlay Mysteries series, and I have to say, I enjoyed this even more than the first! To reconnect with the two main characters, Ruth, and her side-kick, and wacky dresser, Doris, felt like visiting old friends. In this mystery, Doris coerces Ruth into a three-day trip to Bright to make up a group of eight people from their village. The journey fits in well with Ruth’s plans, as her editor has asked her to write an article about the place. Things don’t quite go to plan when, on the first morning in their rented cottage, one member is found dead. The police assume the death is accidental, but Ruth and Doris believe otherwise. They find a tiny clue at the crime scene and are determined to discover the truth. Unfortunately for Ruth, she is the outside in the group and the more she investigates the more certain the others become that she is the culprit. Because of the group’s bias, the crime solving duo must work in secret to unearth the truth. Slowly but surely, they discover more and more information and find a link between the corpse, (Burt) and the woman who has rented them the cottage. Someone in the group is to blame, but who could it be? As the clues and suspicions become more and more convoluted, I found myself analysing each character, trying to surmise the connections and their motives for murder. The storyline kept me guessing until the end. This novel is well worth a read. A solid five stars from me.
Having previously ennoyed the first Ruth Finlay mystery from this author I began reading this second offering with high expectations. I was not disappointed. Together with her elderly neighbour and part-time amateur sleuth, Doris Cleaver, Ruth sets off on a three day trip to the resort of Bright, as part of a party of eight people. On their first morning, the two women stumble across the body of one of their fellow travellers. Murder or accident? The local police are quick to log the death as accidental, but Ruth and Doris suspect foul play. The problem is when they voice their suspicions to the rest of their travelling companions, Ruth surprisingly became everyone's chief suspect. Together, the intrepid couple are forced to keep their own investigations a closely guarded secret, as one by one they attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding Burt's death. They soon suspect his murder, which they are sure his death was, may be linked to the death of the husband of the woman who owns the chalet they are staying in. The case grows more and more complex, reminding me in some ways of a classic Agatha Christie tale. I must admit that the story kept me guessing to the end, and the twist in the tale made for a very satisfying, surprise ending, well worth 5 big stars from me. Highly recommended.
Quirky characters and unexpected twists. Delightful read for fans of cozy mysteries. It’s a story that promises—and delivers—a blend of intrigue and the idiosyncrasies of small-town life. I thought it to a perfect pick for those who enjoy their mysteries with a touch of the Australian outback. And it's very well produced!
