Asesinato en Bright (Misterios de Ruth Finlay nº 2)

Rate this book

I enjoyed this book.
There was a lot going on in this book and while not a locked room mystery as such, there was some of the elements present. Such as Ruth and Doris finding themselves sharing a holiday home with a possible killer. This turned out to be interesting because not only were most of the suspects all in one place, it also meant that Ruth and Doris couldn't go about investigating like they wanted and had to keep everything on the down low. It also didn't help that not everyone was happy with Ruth being present and the tension and suspicion was high. Of course the case got solved but I must confess I had no clue who was behind it.
I liked characters, especially the bright and colourful Doris, who certainly did her part in solving the case and smoothing ruffled feather, like only she can. The author has defiantly created a delightful team in Ruth and Doris and I can't wait to join them on there next case.

When Doris struggles to make up the numbers for a mahjong weekend away, she turns to friend and neighbour Ruth. Ruth struggling with the death of her father is in need for a getaway and her publisher thinks so too. She just so happens to need a feature done on Bright, the same place Doris's group is heading. While it might not be what she had in mind, Ruth agrees and in doing so finds herself caught up in another puzzling death. One of the Mahjong group is found dead the morning after there arrive and the police are quick to chalk it up to accidental. Ruth and Doris don't think so and start there own investigation. Could one of there group be responsible? Everybody thinks Ruth is responsible being the new comer to the group and give her the cold shoulder, making hard to investigate. Can Ruth and Doris sneak around following up clues when all eyes are on them? They quickly discover the holiday home owners husband died and with connections to everybody at the home popping up, they have there work cut out for them.
I like the narrator and think she is a good choice for the series. I hope she will continue to be the author's narrator of choice throughout and the author has a lot more books in the pipe line.
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Having previously ennoyed the first Ruth Finlay mystery from this author I began reading this second offering with high expectations. I was not disappointed. Together with her elderly neighbour and part-time amateur sleuth, Doris Cleaver, Ruth sets off on a three day trip to the resort of Bright, as part of a party of eight people.
On their first morning, the two women stumble across the body of one of their fellow travellers. Murder or accident? The local police are quick to log the death as accidental, but Ruth and Doris suspect foul play. The problem is when they voice their suspicions to the rest of their travelling companions, Ruth surprisingly became everyone's chief suspect.
Together, the intrepid couple are forced to keep their own investigations a closely guarded secret, as one by one they attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding Burt's death.
They soon suspect his murder, which they are sure his death was, may be linked to the death of the husband of the woman who owns the chalet they are staying in.
The case grows more and more complex, reminding me in some ways of a classic Agatha Christie tale.
I must admit that the story kept me guessing to the end, and the twist in the tale made for a very satisfying, surprise ending, well worth 5 big stars from me. Highly recommended.

Ruth Finlay gets invited on a long weekend trip with her beloved neighbor Doris. Journalist Ruth plans to explore the tourist attractions in the Australian town of Bright for a feature article. When they find a dead body of one of their tour party, they suspect the murderer is among them. Good story and good writing. The main characters are an unlikely pair, but Ruth loves helping and cooking for Doris. I was surprised and upset about Ruth’s father. I enjoyed my armchair travel to Australia. The narration was outstanding. The performance brought the characters and story to life.

Too Bright for Murder: Ruth Finlay mysteries Book 2: by Isobel Blackthorn

This is the second book in the Ruth Finlay Mysteries series, and I have to say, I enjoyed this even more than the first! To reconnect with the two main characters, Ruth, and her side-kick, and wacky dresser, Doris, felt like visiting old friends.
In this mystery, Doris coerces Ruth into a three-day trip to Bright to make up a group of eight people from their village. The journey fits in well with Ruth’s plans, as her editor has asked her to write an article about the place.
Things don’t quite go to plan when, on the first morning in their rented cottage, one member is found dead. The police assume the death is accidental, but Ruth and Doris believe otherwise. They find a tiny clue at the crime scene and are determined to discover the truth.
Unfortunately for Ruth, she is the outside in the group and the more she investigates the more certain the others become that she is the culprit. Because of the group’s bias, the crime solving duo must work in secret to unearth the truth.
Slowly but surely, they discover more and more information and find a link between the corpse, (Burt) and the woman who has rented them the cottage. Someone in the group is to blame, but who could it be?
As the clues and suspicions become more and more convoluted, I found myself analysing each character, trying to surmise the connections and their motives for murder. The storyline kept me guessing until the end.
This novel is well worth a read. A solid five stars from me.

Quirky characters and unexpected twists. Delightful read for fans of cozy mysteries. It’s a story that promises—and delivers—a blend of intrigue and the idiosyncrasies of small-town life. I thought it to a perfect pick for those who enjoy their mysteries with a touch of the Australian outback. And it's very well produced!
