Jumping Ship is the Introductory Novella to the Island Hopping Series.
The year was nineteen seventy-five. Barren couple, Pearl and Edward Riley stumbled upon a newborn baby girl. Her cries could only be heard by a true mother, which Pearl immediately became. Bundled up with their new child, they discovered a parcel of artifacts and a scribbled note that read: Sakkara.
Pregnant seamstress, Petrina Dugal, became a runaway at the age of twenty-six. She ran away from a brutish husband, Roger, and a well-loved South American home in Georgetown, Guyana; at the heart of her rebellion – an enigmatic lover named Michael Chen. Pet and Mikey, as they became affectionately known, allowed love to blossom in front of her police officer husband and an intrusive community. Were they not aware of the dangers? Or did the pursuit of love trump obligations?
Sakkara Riley grew up with two loving parents – adoptive parents to be exact. She never knew the circumstances surrounding her discovery, until the age of sixteen. She embarks on a journey.
Janice Ross has always believed she was born to write. Ever since she first held a writing device and scribbled in her first journal and created a made up life, she fell in love with the power of storytelling. Since all those years ago, she's grown into a phenomenal writer with skill and experience to feature in true-to-life tales. Be sure to sign up to the newsletter for Janice Ross:
Petrina ran away from abuse as far as she could...Hello Caribbean Islands!!!
Janice Ross delivers a very compelling story about one woman’s strength and how she deals with an abusive husband, self-awareness and love. I was a little skeptical about the read at first because the main character is an adult and described as a runaway. But, the story quickly unfolds and you understand why things happen as they do just as quickly.
Petrina “Pet” Dugal is a young 26-year old woman who marries a tool of a man, Roger Dugal, some seven years ago. One day she finds the courage to leave this monster. As you read the story, you understand why she had to run away from him as fast as she could, something you wish she would have done a long time ago. Much of her marriage is riddled with abusive. Roger is a real jerk and he does unspeakable things to Pet. My teeth clinched every time the story line led to Roger. You’ll feel bad for Pet and jump for joy when she takes a stance against her abuser. The other side of this story is Pet gets her revenge with she meets Mikey. He’s strong, handsome and loving. He brings to Pet’s life the love and attention she’s been craving for so long.
Author Janice Ross does an awesome job of creating imagery so vivid you can feel the Sun warmed waters of the Caribbean Islands, where Pet and Mikey’s journey begin. This book kept me engaged and rooting for Pet throughout. If you’re looking for a good romance read this book will give you what you want. I think this is a great novel, and I strongly recommend it to others.
Jumping Heart! 'When the pursuit of love trumps obligations.' First of all, the very title of this lovely book is intriguing and provoking our imagination. The style of its dynamic narrative is innovative and specific, but above all, really colorful and remarkable. The story is being developed gradually with some flashbacks and twists; which only enhances the storyline. The main protagonist is introduced through her parents' life exepreiences at first, including the life of her adoptive ones alongside. As for her adoptive parents, we still somewhat mysteriously lack a bit of substantial or rather factual information, although we were led to believe they really loved her and had given her all things necessary for the upbringing of a young girl in the US. Supposedly, that has been done on purpose, as the talk revolves around feelings and relationships rather than such additional details. The setting actually is multidimensional, spread over various geographic locations; whereas the plot begins before her physical birth. Her given name, which means 'Sweet', is not accidental either. Moreover, I liked the lively descriptions of the author all around, including emotions, smells, situations, people, historical and cultural remarks/references, exotic cuisine, music and dance, lyrics, her homeland Guyana, to name but just a few. Somehow, this book implies thoughts of courage, bravery, persistence, stamina, defending our own rights and identuty, but most of all, fighting for our true love. I would definitely look forward to the next book in the Island Hopping Series.
“Jumping Ship (Island Hopping Series)” by Janice Ross has at its heart a beautiful love story, set in South American Guyana for which the author has a noticeable affection. Cleverly told in three segments that seem somewhat unrelated at first the book begins by showing us a childless middle aged couple in New York before taking us to Guyana in 1975. I was quite infected by the author’s love for the country and the detailed descriptions of the place near the Caribbean and its unique character. Here we follow a different narrative rather troubled affair between a married woman and her lover. I won’t give away more than that, only that this is brilliantly complimented by the third narrative, which marks the beginning of the series, completing the set up for what will undoubtedly become a powerful and intriguing next instalment. Ross does an excellent job at bringing her characters and their problems alive. All three parts are told with compassion and open great perspectives to the main plot as it will unfold. Very authentic and skilfully fleshed out this is a great and promising beginning.
Multitalented author Janice Ross brought us something new with the Jumping Ship series. I'll admit I'm such a big fan is Damaged Girls that I wasn't prepared for a change. Yet, this new book hit me with all kinds of emotion. The separation of good and bad people all had a hand in this young girls search for identity and her past existence. I can only want the best for Pet and cross my fingers for a reconciliation with her daughter as the series continues. Ross is giving us a plethora of emotion on a Caribbean island... And not just one island. I will be continuing this series to learn more about the people-- isn't that a plus to the story? I give Jumping Ship a big stamp of approval and high recommendation.
As I read this book, I found myself transported to another place and time. I was made privy to the intimate details of the characters' lives. I felt what they felt, saw what they saw. Their voices rang loud and clear, and when I reached the end, I found myself searching for more of this story. Janice Ross is the type of author who makes readers want to read and writers want to write. I'm looking forward to reading the entire Island Hopping Series!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jumping Ship by Janice Ross. The opening of the book hooked me in and I was instantly a prisoner to the hypnotic prose of this talented author. Her writing style is highly descriptive, yet fast moving and I feel as though I've found a unique literary voice. As the story progressed and the setting moved from the USA to Guyana, I felt I was right there with the characters and experienced their ups and downs, absorbing the culture and way of life and as we do with all great reads, I cared deeply for the main protagonists.
If you enjoy well written, moving stories, look no further than the first in the Island Hopping series, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Let me first say that I liked this book. Janice G Ross did a superb job on conveying one of the most universal themes of 'love and sacrifice'.
Janice G Ross does an amazing job with a compelling story line in providing such a descriptive insight as to what the characters are feeling, I the reader, could empathize. I especially empathized with Petrina, which at times that was troubling for me since she was a married woman having an affair, but for the first time in her life, Petrina finally did something for herself.
I highly recommend this book for a good story read. 4.5 Stars!
It’s the seventies in Guyana, South America, and Petrina has fallen in love. She is leaving and going to start a brand new life and birth a brand new life. The problem is, her husband might not like it.
Fast forward some twenty years and Sakkara, the supposed product of Petrina’s love, has some questions about her identity. Pearl and Edward try to convince their daughter, Sakkara, to hire a private investigator, but she’s not having it. She will search for the answers herself with the clues that were left behind in the trash. Sound like a lot?
“Jumping Ship” was a very short read and the author tried to cram too much into this story. It should’ve been longer so that it wouldn’t have been as confusing. I had to read back several times to make sure I understood what was going on.
Ross started with somewhat of a prologue that was a sensory overload. Writing a bunch of beautiful sentences did not make a big impact in such a short story. The time spent crafting sentences could’ve been spent giving more story. The bulk of the story, which focused on Petrina, wasn’t so bad but it was written in a totally different style than the prologue. While the prologue was romantically descriptive, the beginning and middle was more straightforward and pointed. The end seemed to take on another writing style that was more like a research paper and these styles just didn’t mesh well.
Janice Ross takes us on a journey through time and history. While telling a story about love, loss, abuse, and abandonment, Janice also educates readers about Guyana and its rich cultural history. In this story Janice starts us off on one ship by introducing us to the couple Edward and Pearl who are childless. As irony would have it, they discover a baby who had been abandoned in a dumpster. Afterwards, Janice takes us on another ship back in time to where we learn about the history of this baby and where she came from- possibly Pertrina and Mike. Pertinacity and Mike commits adultery against Pertrina's abusive husband Mike. The two literally jumps ship and leave South America for reasons I will let the readers find out. In the end, Sakkara jumps ship when she leaves her adoptive parents to discover who she really is and where she came from. Was it Petrina and Mike? Or Petrina. And Roger? Or what if Sakkara is wrong all together?
The title of this book is very fitting and readers will jump ships and they journey from chapter to the next. In the end, you just may have to take one more flight -a journey on a ship to another island series.
Jumping Ship is the first part of what promises to be an interesting, suspenseful and heartfelt series. Janice Ross transports readers to the streets of New York, but even more vibrantly to Guyana to discover the circumstances that lead to Sakkara to be left in a New York alleyway as a baby to be adopted by a loving couple with no children of their own. Certainly, we do not learn everything yet, just how Pet and Mikey ran away from Guyana and Pet's abusive husband, but I know we will learn more as Sakkara discovers her heritage.
Ross is passionate about Guyana. I have never been there, but have heard to it. I have shared rum from Guyana with visitors to Newfoundland, Canada, and, when I was in Barbados, learned what wonderful dishes the Caribbean islands have made of Newfoundland salt cod. Knowing that where I am from has such a connection with almost all of the Caribbean islands has made me want to know more about them, and someday, get to visit them all. Ross' writing is so descriptive that I feel like I can feel the sunshine and see all of the bright colours.
I look forward to the next books in the series to follow Sakkara around the Caribbean to learn about the islands and follow Sakkara, Pet and Mikey's story.
This story starts off teasing you with an array of questions that will lead you into the heart of the beloved plot. Jumping Ship touches on several important and morally salient topics. They range from domestic abuse and marital delusion to adultery and treachery. The author does an astounding job of reeling you into the lives of Edward & Pearl Riley, she makes you feel like you know a couple just like them. Then, Jumping Ship introduces you to three of the most indelible characters of the book, Pet, Roger and Mickey.
You will be able to feel the pain and agony that Pet experiences while trying to keep her sanity. At times I wished I could talk to the character Pet, and give her some advice. I also wanted to be that friend that would listen without judgement. The suspenseful question of, "What will happen to them," is always in the back of you mind. The build up of the plot will keep you reading till the very end. I’m ready to inhale the next installment of the Island Hopping Series by Janice Ross.
From the synopsis, I thought this book was full of promise, and I was looking forward to reading it. I was however left feeling a little disappointed. I expected that with it being a novella, it would be like other novella's I had read; a short story that had a start, a middle and an end. This was not the case however as it just came to an abrupt end and I felt very let down. This was obviously left so that you have to buy the next book as it is part of a series, but I found it frustrating. I could have learnt all I needed about this book just from the synopsis.
I did however like the authors descriptive narrative of Guyana and I would like to have heard more.
I do think that it shows promise though for turning it into a series, but I hope that the author doesn't end each book so abruptly.
Personally, if they don't have a start, middle and end, I would prefer to pay more and read it as one book, as I do think that the author has a nice fluid style of writing I enjoy and I would love to read the story from start to end.
The best way I can describe this book is that it is a romantic suspense mystery. Is that a thing? I don't know, but if it is then this book nailed it on the head.
The beginning hooks you right away, and then you are taken to a different place and time to meet the Petrina. This young women is married to the worst person possible. We follow her story while she finds the courage to leave her abusive husband with her new found love.
However, this is where the mystery begins. We know from the start of the book that something must have went terribly wrong for Petrina and her new found lover Mikey. Exactly what went wrong, I have no idea...but I can't wait to find out!
I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Jumping Ship is a mystery series. Petrina a young women finds the courage to leave Roger her abusive Husband. Mikey is her new love and she decides to leave with him. The ending is a cliffhanger. The characters are easy to relate to. If you love a book with a promise of a mystery and romance included than i highly recommend you read Jumping ship i can,t wait to read the next book in the series.Janice Ross writes a story which draws you in from the first page.
An atmospheric and moving tale of love, disappointment and hope, written in a beautiful melodic prose that is a pleasure to sink into and savour. Jumping Ship promises great things of the coming Island Hopping Series and I, for one, cannot wait to join Sakkara on her search for identity and quest for answers, and already wish her well. My mouth is almost watering at the prospect of the treats in store from the nib of Janice Ross's pen.
This book is a great start to a mystery series. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger but not enough of a one to be so annoying that you want to throw your kindle/book across the room.
Janice Ross is an amazing author. She really knows how to take you through timelines without it being to confusing. The characters were easy to relate to. I can't wait to find out more about Sakkara.
If you love the promise of a mystery with some romance thrown in than this is the book for you!
Jumping Ship is one of those books that you just know will stick with you. The story is told so well that you feel like you are really there, and have a personal investment in the lives of the characters.
Petrina is a young women who finally finds the courage to leave her abusive husband Roger. She decides to leave with her new love, Mikey. However, at the end of the book you can't help but know that something bad is about to happen. I can't wait to find out what it is!
In her novella, "Jumping Ship," Janice Ross tells an intriguing tale of an abused wife who finds love in the arms of a man other than her abusive husband and an unexpected pregnancy that will be the answer to another couple's prayers. Ms. Ross weaves this first installment of the "Island Hopping Series" with a skilled hand. Great read!
I loved the emotions that this book created. Janice is an awesome author who knows how to pull readers into her stories and connect with the characters. This is a MUST read.

What I liked About & Jumping Ship;...
I found &; Jumping Ship&; an excellent read that you will find hard to put down once you start it. I loved how this author could pull her readers into the story and connect them with the characters. You can also tell that this author loved this country because of all the detailed descriptions of it near the Caribbean area as she brings us a good read. This was a love story with lots of mystery as we follow a married woman and her lover, and since this is the beginning of a series, I am sure we will get lots more. This is quite a read of a woman's strength in how she had dealt 'with an abusive husband, self-awareness, and love.' I will say that that part of the read was not pretty.
But then Petrina meets Mikey. I don't want to give any of it away and spoil it for you. Just pick up this fantastic read to see for yourself how this author brings it all so well to the readers. There seem to be three parts to this story where you will see it all told in such an intriguing captivating way as the story unfolds. If you are looking for a good romance novel, you have come to the right place for &; Jumping Ship; it will give you a well-written, heartwarming love story that starts this series.
In Jumping Ship by Janice G. Ross readers are introduced to Petrina Dugal, a pregnant seamstress who runs away from her husband. Petrina wants to be with her lover, Michael Chen. Petrina and Michael stop in many islands but evidently land in New York never to be seen again.
Edward and Pearl Riley happen to find an abandon baby crying with a name wrote on a piece of paper. Pearl is instantly drawn to the baby girl and immediately stands in to take the motherly role. The Bailey’s raise the baby girl as their own naming her Sakkara as it was on the paper left to them. Sakkara is all grown up and wants to learn about her heritage. Sakkara knows she was adopted but her parents can only provide her with the artifacts left behind the day they found her. Sakkara has a hard task, will she succeed?
What I Did Not Like: The style of writing changes in the story. I would have preferred to learn more about Edward, Pearl and Sakkara more so than Petrina and Michael. The story also seemed rushed and had me confused and hard to keep up with the storyline.
What I Did Like: I loved the descriptions of Guyana. I can appreciate the author setting the scene for the next book in the series, which I hope helps readers learn more about these characters. I recommend that readers plan to read the whole series.
This book was provided by the author for review purposes.
Jumping Ship was an easy read, delivery exactly what the blurb described whilst alluding to a further mystery. What happened to Pet and Mikey? How did Sakkara come to be abondoned? Something disastrous must have happened in the three months since Pet and Mikey’s escape. Three short months to disaster... Book 2 will hopefully be much more revealing and I am looking forward to it.
I think perhaps the summary gives too much of the story away, it could almost have been a synopsis. Nothing much happened beyond what was outlined. That’s not to say that Jumping Ship is not worth reading, it is. It details the plight of Pet and Mikey in a sweet, simple and profound manner.
I enjoyed Janice Ross’s writing style, she didn’t get bogged down in too much extraneous detail and delivered the story in a concise linear order.
