This novelette takes place after the final battle in The Storm Dragon's Heart — during the first part of Chapter 53.
STORM PHASE A teenage wizard burdened with a mysterious destiny, a cat-girl ninja he can't help but fall for, and a bat-winged daemon that doubles as a diary embark on a journey of self-discovery in a world teeming with monsters and magic. Perfect for fans of Percy Jackson and Avatar: the Last Airbender, this enchanting Asian-inspired fantasy series delivers fast-paced adventure for readers young and old.
Interlude 1: THE MAKER'S BRUSH Unlike her famous and important brother Turesobei, who will one day become their clan's next high wizard, or Iniru, his qengai assassin girlfriend, Enashoma's destiny is to marry a noble lord of her mother's choosing and host teas for the rest of her life. This is decidedly not the future she dreams of. But then she gets a chance at adventure. When her brother and her clan are at their most vulnerable, an ancient threat is released. And despite Lu Bei's knowledge and Iniru's skill, Enashoma is the only one with the power to stop it.

Even though Enashoma is clearly important to Turesobei (the main character of the main Storm Phase books) you don't get to see much of her until she, and a whole bunch of trouble, force their way into book two, Lair of the Deadly Twelve. So Maker's Brush lets readers get to know her and sets the stage for book two. Honestly, I can't believe it wasn't written till after the other books because it not only gives us some important moments, like Enashoma and Lu Bei's first meeting, but also introduces some really cool information that I have a feeling will turn out to be a big deal later on in the series.
I always liked Enashoma in the other books but, with Iniru running around being all ninja-cat-girl awesome, she got second or even third billing. But as soon as she got to take the stage, I immediately fell in love with her. It was also fun to see the other girls without Turesobei around to muck things up.
The plot held all the fast-paced action and fun I've come to expect in the Storm Phase books. And even though it's short, we still get those cleverly awkward character moments that are my favorite part of these books. I really hope David Alastair Hayden writes more of these to supplement the Storm Phase Series.
I have a greedy little mind and wanted this to be longer. =) I'm excited to see if the brush will appear in the future. Just as fun as the first, now I'm onto the next!
