Summer #3

That One Summer

Rate this book
As the countdown to the new millennium begins, there is one thing everyone agrees no one wants to be in Onslow for New Year’s Eve.

So that can only mean one road trip!

No longer the mousey, invisible, shy girl from years ago, Tammy Maskala is finally making up for all those lost summers. A new year with new friends, which astoundingly includes the bossy boy behind the bar, Chris Henderson.

She likes her new friends (at least most of them), so why does she secretly feel so out of place?

After chickening out on the trip, a last-minute change of heart sees Tammy racing to the Onslow Hotel, fearing she’s missed her chance for a ride. The last thing she expected to meet was a less-than-happy Onslow Boy leaning against his black panel van.

Now the countdown begins to reach the others at Point Shank before the party is over and the new year has begun. Alone in a car with only the infuriating Chris Henderson, Tammy can’t help but feel this is a disastrous start to what could have been a great adventure. But when the awkward road trip takes an unexpected turn, Tammy soon discovers that the way her traitorous heart feels about Chris is the biggest disaster of all.

Fogged up windows, moonlight swimming, bad karaoke and unearthed secrets; after this one summer nothing will ever be the same again.

I don't know how C.J. Duggan does it, but she did it again! That One Summer is once again, a perfect read. At this point, I can honestly say that I'll read anything this author writes and love it, and for me, that is a rare thing with NA contemporary authors.

This book follows Chris Henderson, Amy's oldest cousin and her best friend Tammy Maskala. Everybody is set for a road trip to celebrate New Year's Eve away from Onslow and while this trip for some of them is just a time spent with friends and having fun, for Tammy and Chris it might have a little different meaning.

I was very excited to see how this book plays out. Tammy and Chris always seemed like they would be great together, and I wasn't wrong. They make a great couple. This book is different from the first two in many ways. All the characters are more matured but there is still that playful side of them that we learned to love in the previous books. Also, Chris and Tammy are different than other characters. They are more closed off and serious. Chris is still the same brooding Chris we know from before, but we see a completely different side of him when he is around Tammy. He is more relaxed, even playful and flirty at the times. Tammy is still the shy one and I loved seeing how through the book she became bolder and more aware of herself. The chemistry between Chris and Tammy was present from the beginning. I loved the way their friends were always teasing them and how slowly they both became aware of their feelings for each other. The romance itself was perfect.

But the thing I liked the most in this book is friendship between them all. Seeing how they are all very close, how connected and ready to help each other is its strongest part.

I can't wait for the fourth book to come out, more so because it will be Adam and Ellie's book and I always thought they are perfect for each other. If you still haven't started the Summer series by C.J. Duggan, I strongly recommend you to do so. You will end up loving them.

I loved Chris and Tammy's journey. They take a road trip with the rest of the Onslow gang where they fall in love with each other. Their book was my favorite story of the whole series so far, as they were able to spend the whole book together.

What I loved:
1. Road trip.
2. Chris and Tammy journey the whole way there and back alone together.
3. The Onslow Gang and the new addition of Bell, Stan's GF.
4. The Ending.
5. I loved that they camped most of their trip.
6. New Years Eve.
7. Late night ocean swim.
8. Chris and Tammy spend a lot of the book together.
9. Their shower scenes.
10. The way the gang interacts, their banter and just the whole dynamics of the group and the fun they have together.

Of course, there are a few secrets being kept a long the way. However, there is one big one that causes a little bit of issue with some of the characters. It also played in to how Toby was with Tess, which I wasn't a fan of, thankfully it's all for a good reason.

This series is one of my favorite fun NA contemporaries. I initially fell in love with CJ Duggan's series when I read The Boys of Summer.. set in the 1990s in the summer and in Australia.. it was the perfect relaxing and fun setting I've read. Now two books later, the spark hasn't left this series with That One Summer. Road trip contemporary fans, this book is for you. Set in the last days of 1999, we are transported back in time and witness the countdown to the new millennia. I was only 9 years old in 1999 so I can't remember all the excitement and buzz but I got to be a part of it in this book.

All three books are companion novels so we still get to be a part of the older characters and I just loved seeing Tess and Toby again.. and the Onslow Boys in general. The characters are such great friends and their friendship and fun times make me a little bit envious at how simple the olden days were. In this one we finally focus on Chris, the brooding always serious bartender and now co-owner of the Onslow hotel. I was SO happy that he finally got a story since I've loved him ever since I read The Boys of Summer.

A new character was introduced, Tammy, and I have to say that she's just as awesome as the previous two protagonists. Duggan knows how to write likable and enjoyable characters. I loved how the book didn't only center around their romance, but we also got a few back plot lines, one including Tess and Toby that gave me so much stress (better to read the book and know what I mean!) but when it comes down to it, Duggan's books are feel good HEA ones and I am so happy for that. The friendship between the Onslow boys is what makes me love these books so much. I definitely recommend this whole series to anyone in need of a good NA contemporary romance but I do not recommend it to younger teens. I can't wait for the next novel and I am so happy to know who the two main protagonists are!

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author C.J. Duggan and Xpresso book tours.)
This is book 3 in the ‘summer’ series, but can be read as a standalone.
Tammy doesn’t really like Chris does she? She doesn’t really want to go on a camping trip does she? Tammy is the last person to know the answers to these questions, but she’s about to find out soon enough.

Once again I was expecting this book to be good, and I ended up disappointed.

Tammy was an okay character, but I hated how little confidence she had, and I hated how difficult it was for her to make a decision and stick with it. I really wanted her to grow up a bit, and stop behaving like a child.

The storyline was a little strange. I didn’t really get why Tammy’s mother meddled in her daughter’s life, and I didn’t think that pretending to have a summer fling was a good idea. I felt bored for the majority of this book unfortunately, and the romance was a bit frustrating.
Usually even if I don’t like the rest of the storyline I can still enjoy the romance, but there just didn’t seem to be that much romance in this one at all. Then, when we finally got a bit of action between the characters, the deed was always called off, and I just got really sick of it. These weren’t really kids, they weren’t virgins, but every time there was just no consummation. This wouldn’t have been an issue if the romance and chemistry had been better, but there was just nothing. I didn’t feel my heart racing, and their flirting (what little there was) made me roll my eyes, not shiver in anticipation.
The ending was like wise pretty dull, and I was just glad it was over to be honest. I’m now wondering why I liked the first book in this series so much, because books 2 and 3 have just been pants.
Overall; not a fan.
5 out of 10.

CJ has done it once again! That One Summer has a mix of everything in it. What I loved the most though, was the group of friends, their friendly banter and the way we still got to see the characters from the first two books...which I also loved. But this one I was looking forward to the most, I mean who doesn't love a broody hot male...ME, and Cj done wonders with Chris. She'll make you fall in love with, not only him, but all of them. Cj will also leave you wanting and waiting for more from her.

I love your work CJ! You have made a huge fan out of me.

This was hella sweet and adorable. Takes me back in time with that late 90s Aussie vibe. Duggan never disappoints. Full review to come on blog tour.

Firstly thanks to CJ Duggan and the Three Bookateers for this review copy and organising the blog tour

“And there was nothing more frustrating than a smug Onslow boy”

CJ Duggan’s 2012 Aussie YA contemporary debut, The Boys of Summer, completely blew me away with its ‘90s Aussie setting. A year later and she’s onto her third book in the Summer series – she set the bar high with The Boys of Summer, but That One Summer does not disappoint at all.

I’ll be honest, I was scared to read the sequels in the Summer series because I’m such a Tess/Toby fan and I didn’t think any other Onslow couple would beat the one from The Boys of Summer. But reading TOS I found I absolutely adored Tammy and Chris. They’re very different to Tess and Toby and that’s what made their story so enjoyable.

Set approximately 4 years after we’re first introduced to the Onslow Boys and directly after the events of An Endless Summer, the new millennium is approaching and nobody wants to spend New Year’s Eve in Onslow. The result is a camping road trip organised by the boys. Stuck with the brooding Chris Henderson for the road trip, Tammy Maskala as the newest addition to the gang has insecurities about fitting in with the rest. Her sarcastic voice had me in stitches countless times and her wit made her a very likeable protagonist. Being inside Tammy’s head, I could really relate to her. She over analysed a lot of things which might be annoying in some characters, but when one is stuck in a very long car ride with Chris Henderson, who wouldn’t over analyse every word the man manages to speak? I guess the only thing that annoyed me about Tammy was how easily she cried. I’m a pretty emotional person but even I thought Tammy was a tad too sensitive… Almost on the cry-baby side. Nearly everything set her off; don’t get me wrong, she’s a strong person but I think she may have needed a bit more mettle where the crying was concerned.

“In other words, I had gone from the usual third wheel to spare tyre.”

Chris Henderson. Or as I sometimes to referred as, “50 Shades of Frowns”. This guy had a different unpleasant expression for absolutely everything. Constantly brooding, he barely strung together complete sentences but what he did have to say was either extremely hilarious or very meaningful. Chris Henderson is my kind of guy. At first it seems the only trait that makes Chris an “Onslow boy” are his good looks. On the surface, it seems the defining characteristic of the Onslow boys is aesthetics, charm and their outgoing, confident nature. But look beyond that and what the Onslow boys really do have in common is the way they treat girls fairly, never looking down on them; they don’t say demeaning things; they’re good natured, sweet and the type of guy every girl should be looking for. What I love about the Onslow boys is their ability to love, and to love unconditionally no questions asked. They give their whole heart, they’re faithful and Chris Henderson is no different. Deep down, there’s a funny side to him, and more importantly, a truly caring guy that looks after those around him. Just like I fell in love with Toby in The Boys of Summer, I fell in love with Chris in That One Summer.

“Do you ever feel like you have so much to say, but you just don’t know how to say it?”

The romance was sexy as! I loved the build-up that Duggan created with the glances, flirting and light touches. She also writes steamy scenes like no other, filled with longing, desire and passion. Duggan teases, taunts and hints at what could be, all the while leaving the reader reeling from the possibilities.

“I desperately wanted to reach out to him, to bring my shaking hands up and slide them over his shoulders, to press skin to skin, drawing him near and crushing against him, like the stirrings of wave slamming into rocks.”

Duggan knows just what everybody wants: to see all our favourite characters from previous books again! The whole ensemble from the previous books make their way to 2000 and seeing everyone again just made me really happy. Each of the characters/couples had their own subplot; whether it was the addition of new characters, couples continuing in their bliss, or the trials they had to overcome, That One Summer had it all. The subplots made it a great way to see more into the lives of the crew, and of course, made headway for future books!

“You know more than anyone that I am never one to love for the sake of being in love, but I love because of you.”

There’s nothing overly complicated or angsty about the plot, but it’s a road trip of self-discovery, love and friendship. Duggan intertwines the various subplots with Chris and Tammy’s story, set against the gorgeous back drop of Australian scenery – from highway, through the bush, to beaches and resorts. And as the clock strikes ever closer to January 1, 2000, will everybody get their happily-ever-after? And will Chris and Tammy find it in each other to see their feelings? This is that one summer you won’t want to miss – sweet, sexy and topped off with that serene laidback vibe that only comes with an Aussie YA.

“… We hoped for our lives to change in some way from this night on.”

First a huge thanks to C.J Dugan for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

How should is start? I feel in love with Onslow boys when I read the first book in the series, I remember that I kept telling myself I’ll read just one last chapter…the last thing I knew I had finished the book and I was two hours away from the time I had to get up for work….it was totally worth it. Then I thought the sequel could never be as good as the first book…I was so wrong it was even better and we has the chance to know what was going on with the characters we learned to love in the first book. So of course when I had the chance to get an ARC for this book I jumped on it and I kept crossing my fingers I would get one…I’ve never been more excited than when I saw the email!
In this one we discover Tammy, Amy’s shy and mousy friends turned into a fitness amazon (from what Amy says when she saw her again in the second book!) and Chris, our moody, bossy, brooding, control freak Onslow boy! The story starts with the Onslow gang deciding to celebrate the new millennia with some camping and a road trip. Tammy is not sure she want to go and be the third wheel and when she finally decide and go to meet the others at the Onslow Hotel they are gone….except for Chris. They embark on a funny and intense road trip to meet the others. I don’t wanna give away too much so let’s just say that C.J is still the master of funny and hot moments!

I was surprised at how much I loved Chris at the end of this book. For Chris Henderson was the hot but moody bartender who bought the Onslow hotel with Sean. I always thought he was cool, collected, responsible and mostly anti-social toward girl but Tammy seems to bring out a totally different side of him. Who knew that he could be so devious and charming! And I melted at how he was sweet and comforting with Tammy when she needed it. But the guy can be hot…as Tammy said ‘’ Loving Chris Henderson would be wrong. Diabolically disastrous. I mean, what is there about him to love? He’s moody, bossy, brooding, a control freak, and that’s on a good day … but there was one achingly obvious fact that haunted my every thought, every minute of every day …He sure could kiss.

As for Tammy she did a lot of growing up in this book. She’s this beautiful, college student/ personal trainer, but she always feels like she doesn’t belong. Sometimes she’s shy, sometimes confident…but ok hanging out with Chris will do that to a girl!

In this one we have the chance to connect deeper with all the other characters. In the other books we only got glimpse of our favorite couples but they are an important part of this book. Just have to say that C.J had me on the edge of my seat most of the book while I was trying to figure out what was wrong with Toby!

That One Summer is a funny, captivating and an enticing read full of friendship, steamy romance, and hilarious adventures that will have you hookedlike the first two books. If you never read a book in this series what are you waiting for? Get up, pick one and start reading!

I gotta say- no one does Aussie NA like C.J. Duggan. Having enjoyed reading the two other Summer books before this, I was very much looking forward to That One Summer. Duggan does her romance so very well and makes you swoon a helluva lot. That One Summer did not disappoint- Chris and Tammy’s love story was real romantic!

“If I’d had to choose perfect, I would have just chosen you.”

Truth be told, I was wary of Tammy as the main character for That One Summer. I wasn’t sure how she’d sit with the whole gang, as she was not originally part of it. I was surprised that she was anxious about being out of place herself and I felt for her then. Tammy Maskala’s voice was very natural and easy to read. While I can’t say I downright loved Tammy, I liked reading about the Onslow gang through her eyes.

Another thing about this series is that the male cast is seriously GORGEOUS. I don’t even care that a marvelous species such as the Onslow Boys cannot ever be real or sensible. The Onslow Boys have grown on me and I love them so. Sean Murphy was my absolute favorite but I was flabbergasted by just how much I ended up liking Chris Henderson too. Chris is the moody, broody, responsible one in the group and he’s often dismissed as a tight ass. I did not expect his sweet, sexy and smirky side but seeing it shine through in That One Summer was thoroughly fun.

“You know that nice for me means ‘absolutely beautiful’, right?”

Humor and flirty witticisms are a guarantee with the Onslow boys and That One Summer had much of it. Looking back now, I must’ve looked like an idiot smiling to myself while reading this book. Summer or not, That One Summer was a delecatable read!

A hilarious, enticing love story that had me captivated from the very first sentence! I started reading TOS at midnight, so imagine my surprise when C.J started off the story in a setting of pitch blackness. I was definitely worried about having nightmares especially when this sentence popped up “One, two, Freddie’s coming for you… Three, four, better lock your door.” Yep visions of Freddie Kruger popped into my mind at that point. But anyway, what I found the most enjoyable about this novel was that it kept getting better and intriguing throughout each chapter, until I had no choice but to be a hundred percent captivated and in love with everything Duggan threw at us.

The story starts off with the Onslow gang not wanting to spend the New Year’s in town as the welcoming of a new millennia. So the girls invite themselves to go with the boys camping at Point Shank. But our main girl Tammy’s not so sure if she wants to go. What with feeling like she doesn’t belong in the group. But when she changes her mind at the last minute, she heads to the Onslow Hotel in a rush with her mum driving like crazy (which is normal apparently) and there she finds…. That they left without her. But little did she know that someone’s been there waiting for her… Mr Chris Henderson himself, blackmailed by his little cuz into taking Miss Maskala to catch up with the gang. And in turn starts a hilarious, swoon-worthy romantic, outrageous road trip to the perfect NYE destination with a group of friends like no other. And when the clock strikes twelve, be prepared for an unexpected surprise, you’ll never see coming ;-].

Tammy Maskala’s this beautiful, sometimes shy, sometimes confident, college personal trainer, who feels as if she doesn’t belong with the Onslow gang and so she distances herself… or at least she tries to distance herself. But with best friend Amy’s interference, she has no choice but to get involved and have fun with a group of people who enjoy her company. And with moody Chris showing more emotions towards her than anybody else, she’s about to be bombarded with friends trying to pair her up with a hottie (which isn’t that bad if you ask me ;-]).

“ But if I had to choose perfect, I would have just chosen you” – Chris

In the other Summer novel, I felt like we barely got a good idea as to who exactly is Chris Henderson, so I was super excited to find out he was getting his own novel. Now if you suddenly forgot who Chris is for some reason or that you were overloaded with too many Onslow hotties and totally spaced as to who was who. Well, Chris is the moody bartender who now runs Onslow along with Sean. The hottie with a scowl who I feel always had a helping hand in whatever problems arised within the gang. Chris kind of took me by surprise, I always enjoyed his scenes in the previous books, but I’ve always seen him as this cool, collected bartender and in TOS we see a whole new side to him that I just adore. He's usually anti-social towards the girls, but with Tammy, we see a whole new side to him… a yummy side ;-P. He's cheeky, devious and charming and he seems to be giving out those rare sunshine smiles to only one girl. But his also sweet in a quiet, comforting way and add in the fact his a dedicatedly responsible guy with a tempting bod... and we have the perfect guy!

“Watching Chris’s body slowly appear out of the water. It was as if a movie was playing out in slow motion before my eyes – he ran his hands back through his hair as the excess water dribbled down his tanned skin.”

As always, I love the Aussie references in the series, it was definitely a breath of fresh air and just made me so at home with the setting as it’s similar to my own lifestyle. It was also amazing to see the gang all together once again! As unlike the first two novels, I feel like in TOS we got to know the other characters (mainly the rest of the Onslow boys) on a deeper level as they are seen all out together crackin’ up jokes and just having a good time. It also added to the atmosphere of summer, to get to see their unique bonds and how comfortable they all are individually or together, even though Tammy feels like she’s out of place, we get to see her interaction with the others and how they value her as one of their own. It was also great to see the dynamics of Tammy and Amy’s friendship, it reminds me of my conversations with my girls every time we hang out together. And oh C.J! You still manage to have me cracking up like a hyena at all your comedic situations and expressions!

I also love the unexpected twists Duggan throws our way, they definitely keep things in suspense and makes it that much more interesting, while making it a far cry from knowing what to expect. Also, every Chris and Tammy moments had me smiling like a lunatic. And as much as I love the Onslow Hotel, it was nice to see the gang on a road trip and have some new scenery. After reading book two, I feel like it was a nice change of direction as the follow up. As An Endless Summer mostly concentrated on the Onslow hotel, it was nice, to take a break and have a whole new scenery and adventures for book three.

Overall, That One Summer is a hilarious, captivating and an enticing read full of friendship, romance, and hilarious adventures that will keep you enchanted even after you’ve finished reading. Worth a read, especially if you’ve read the first two novels. Also it’s a perfect summer read in the countdown for the New Year! Definitely gets you thinking about what your plans are for NYE 2014.

Good gracious, I love this series. I practically inhaled this book.

That One Summer follows the same group of Australian friends as the previous two installments. It takes place in 1999, just as New Year's Eve is approaching, as the Onslow Boys and their respective girlfriends and friends-that-are-girls are making plans for how they want to ring in the new millennium. They decide that they want to take a long road trip, complete with camping along with way and fireworks as the clock strikes midnight. Plans are made, bags are packed, and...Tammy is sort-of left behind. It's no big deal, really, she can catch a ride with Chris, who also seems to be leaving late for some reason.

She's less-than-thrilled. Or maybe she's actually really thrilled? Tammy has a crush on Chris but gosh he is super-moody and a bit on the bossy side. And he hardly ever smiles. But she doesn't have much of a choice: if she wants to catch up to her friends and ring in the new year, this is the only way to get there.

ROAD TRIP!

----

This book begins with not my favorite characters but I warm up to them greatly. And it isn't long into the story before I am swooning hard at Chris' efforts at making Tammy feel comfortable and welcome and just, better. Wow, there's a whole lot under the serious face that we've seen Chris wear for the past two books! I kind of love it! And the slow-romance road-trip adventure that these two go on? LOVE, LOVE. I'm not convinced that this is my favorite of the three books in this series so far, but there are BY FAR some of my absolute favorite scenes.

Tammy Maskala begins the story feeling somewhat insecure about her place within the group. Her best friend Amy is far more outgoing than Tammy, and even while Amy always includes Tammy in everything, Tammy mentions more than once that she feels like an outsider. Tammy's actions support her feelings of insecurity, which initially made it hard for me to warm up to her, which made me a little nervous because I've loved this series so much. HOWEVER -- Thankfully, Tammy was able to find her place within the group as the story progressed, thankfully. This is helped along more by Chris than anyone else, I think, which is interesting because it caught Tammy by surprise.

Chris Henderson is one of the more responsible of the group. He has so far in the series seemed to me to be one of the older ones (or at least older-acting); perhaps this is because he has a steady, respectable job. Chris comes across as sort-of straight-laced, but this is really mostly a front - he actually has a little bit of a wild streak to him that is revealed throughout the story. I think Chris won both my heart and Tammy's heart in his actions - even with his supposed wild streak, he has a quiet demeanor and is trustworthy. He is respectful, patient, kind. He is thoughtful, which went a long way with Tammy. I don't think there is one big thought about him that stands out - I think he is a quiet, total-package kind of love interest, and I think that's what I liked so much about him.

It was pretty hilarious that Tammy and Chris are stuck riding together for so long, considering their personalities. While they're both different, they're also both different from the rest of the group, and this gives them something in common. And they are both crushing pretty hard on one another but are too quiet to say anything to one another.

This is the first time that this series that has taken the story away from the Onslow Hotel as the setting. I love the road trip theme. I loved reading about the Australian places along the route. I also loved the camping scenes because I tend to love these as a rule. I ADORE that these characters are recurring and so well-developed; I feel like I know them and want to be friends with them in my own real life.

Oh, interesting! There was one little kind-of-mystery that was in the story, and this had to do with Toby/Tess, who are a couple and were the focus of the first book. It kept me guessing and feeling things. I enjoyed seeing how this particular issue was resolved within the group. I love the friendship dynamic here; these guys and gals genuinely love one another as friends and they want the best for each other. When one is stressed or hurting, they all feel it. And they all want to help. These are characters that I'm truly invested in and I love the way they interact and have healthy relationships.

And I love this romance, of course. I have enjoyed the romances in this series so far - this author has done them so well. They develop slowly and function in a healthy way, I think, and there are no triangles thus far.

I think that this series is full of romances that are believable, relationships that are healthy/almost enviable, and adventures that are fun. That One Summer is a great summer read because of the road trip and also because now, as the third book in this series, we've been watching these characters develop into people and friends for almost the entire 1990's. They've become more and more enjoyable as a group and I'm so glad I bought these books for my Kindle because I feel like these will easily be summer rereads for me in the future.

ALSO, I'm having a fit for an Adam/Ellie connection - ready to get my hands on that book !

I recommend That One Summer by C.J. Duggan and the entire Summer Series for fans of new adult contemporary, summer romances, Aussie authors, and road trips.

I knew this tender side to him was not always front and present, that it was often overshadowed by the equally brooding, bossy, moody part of him. But I couldn't help but be completely and utterly in awe of all that was Chris. To me, he was bloody near-on perfect.

Chris Henderson!!! Wow!! Just wow!!! I thought that I had this complete and all consuming love for one Onslow boy. Then, next thing I know I'm in love with two. But now I just need to come clean and say that I'm a floozy. After reading That One Summer, I love them all. Every. Last. One. They all have this special little place in my heart that's reserved just for them.

I'm not going to go into too much detail about the storyline. The synopsis pretty much sums it up perfectly. That One Summer is Tammy and Chris's story. The book centres around everyone making the decision to get away for New Year. So that means road trip. After a mishap with departure times, Tammy ends up road tripping it alone with Chris is his panel van which comes complete with a mattress in the back. At first Tammy is horrified. But if she's going on this road trip, then this is the only way it's going to happen.

“Because if I’d had to choose perfect, I would have just chosen you.”

“I would choose your legs even when they’re jigging and driving me to distraction. I’d choose your face because it creases into something so amazing when you find something funny (which, incidentally, isn’t often enough for my liking).
“I’d choose the way your cheeks go red whenever you’re embarrassed, just like they are now.
“I’d choose the fact that you’re smart, kind and funny and you don’t even know it.” His eyes ticked over my face in a long, silent study. “It’s a pretty big list, but yeah. I’d choose everything about you.”

In the previous books, I can't say that Chris Henderson made a huge impact on me. He was there, but he was quiet, reserved and somewhat moody. More in the background doing what needed to be done. In That One Summer, Chris is still quiet and sometimes moody. I have to say that I have a thing for quiet and broody. But, I believe he's also a thinker. And he's definitely a carer. He cares about everyone. Their wellbeing, their happiness, their safety. He's a mate to his very core. He believes in them without question and would do whatever was needed for them. But who knew he could be fun, and romantic, and sweet. Or that he was going to get under Tammy's skin and into her heart.

I found myself really connecting with Tammy so much during this book. Certain little traits and thoughts that she had were so much like me. She doesn't feel like she really fits in. She's not really super close with any of the boys. She worries about things. She's much quieter than her group of friends. She had a tendency to over think things, but she has her mantra to be positive and to have fun. I thought her and Chris were so good together. They were incredibly well matched. I adored the time they spent getting to know each other.

description

I loved how much the whole group of friends featured throughout the story. Oh, there was plenty of Chris and Tammy... lots of really nice one on one time. But we also got to see how Amy and Sean were doing and I loved the side story that featured Tess and Toby interwoven throughout. Ringer was his usual stirrer self and things were also set up in readiness for Adam and Ellie's story, which will be just as fantastic as all the others.

C.J once again has written a book that's full to the brim of laughs. I laughed at the banter between mates. I laughed at the thoughts of Tammy. I laughed at the interactions between characters. I laughed at the situations that Tammy found herself in. I laughed at the fun and good times that this wonderful group of friends have. Tammy's mum and the clay vagina's were just classic. The look on my husbands face as I tried to explain them to him was equally as funny.

Just on a side not, I first came across The Boys of Summer a few months before it's release and I was excited. I was excited that an Aussie author was going to release this book that was set in Australia. I'm so happy that C.J has kept that Aussie flavour throughout her stories. I love my home country with a passion and C.J's Aussie infused books fill me with so much pride. Pride for this beautiful piece of land that I live in. Pride for her stories about these good, decent laid-back, Aussie blokes and their love for their woman. But most of all pride that this Aussie author can write such amazing stories that I am honoured to get the chance to read. Her books can rock it with the best of them.

If you are yet to fall in love with the Onslow boys, please don't hold back any longer. Let them into your heart. You won't regret it!!!

Who said that Chris Henderson is not someone you could fall in love with has yet to meet the real Chris Henderson.
I'm still trying to process everything that happened, but like always i have to admit that the book was truly amazing and that the main characters weren't exactly like i expected..So..
Do you remember Tammy Maskala?Well,if you don't remember her then let me tell you this:she is Amy's best friend and a really sweet girl who manages to steal the heart of one of the Onlsow Boys.

Guess which one!Well,i'm sure that, like me,no one expected that exactly the one who is always frowning and serious would be the one who will steal Tammy's heart.
But..I admit that i loved reading about them.About how Chris was more than a grumpy guy.About how Tammy reacted when she was tricked by her mother and by Amy.Or the wonderful surprise Toby did to Tess(even if at some point the way they acted made me shout out loud : What?WHy?When?.Don't ask, read the booK!)

So when i started reading the book i was happy because i really wanted to know what Cj wrote and what the story will be about.Imagine my reaction when everything happened...But i admit that when it is about the Onslow Boys and about the girls everything has to be perfect and crazy. It was.

Tammy-at first i was a little afraid that i won't like her or that she wasn't going to have a beautiful story like Tess and Amy,but i was wrong.Sweet, beautiful and smart,Tammy managed to make me love this book. She wasn't bad and i'm glad..And if i think about how Chris is..If you know what i mean..
What really matters is that Tammy was perfect for this story. For Chris.Yep,she managed to do exactly what the rest of the girls couldn't and for that i almost jumped up and down..Happiness.Yay!A little insecure and sometimes she was thinking too much about some things, but in the end everything was perfect.

Since the first time i read about Chris(In The Boys Of Summer) i never thought about how he was or how his story will be.He was always the party breaker ,the one who always was working and ..the rest you know. But this..This was really a big surprise and i loved every single scene.Yep,who knew that Chris Henderson could be like this?No one!
Once again we get the chance to read about our favorite characters.Once again we get the chance to read about real friendship and about how real friends act.

Fun.Real love.Happiness.Crazy time.And once again real love.

Yep,i had to write that twice because this book was about real love. The beginning of something beautiful.
I admit that i expected everything to happen a little strange, cause if you think about it not everyone could get Chris attention, that i know from The Boys Of Summer and An Endless Summer. But somehow Tammy managed that pretty fast.
But this book wasn't just about Tammy and Chris.I just can't ignore all those scenes with the rest of the characters.Every single one of them had an important part in this story and i loved how everything happened.

What i loved the most? The way Tammy and Chris acted when they were together. At first like nothing was happening between them and then slowly that changed. And it was perfect!!I should stop right now before i write every single thing that happened in this book and that won't be good at all.

And the last thing i want to add is: You.Have.To.Read.This.Book.ASAP!

ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.

This is another Osnlow Boy romance.

We all know about Chris Henderson. He is the one that behave as an adult since the first Summer book. He is the responsible one. He also likes to be in charge.
Tammy Maskala is Amy's best friend. Now, that she is back in Onslow she is invited to every outing the gang does.

"Okay, so I didn’t know what to say to that exactly. It wasn’t every night of my life that I found myself pressed up intimately against an Onslow Boy, in the dark, in his bedroom, in his bed. Well, okay … under his bed. Still, it did make for interesting conversation."

She gets included in every game, every drinking night but she doesn't feel like part of the group. She is an outsider of sorts.
All of them will be leaving Onslow to spend New Year's some where else. At first she decides she doesn't want to go but she has a change of heart. By the time she gets to the hotel her friends are gone. Well, not all of them. Chris stayed behind to take her. Tammy can't believe what's happening. Soon she finds herself falling for him during this road trip. All preconceptions disappear in the van.

I believe Chris is my favorite Onslow boy. I like that he is broody, and that he is the serious one. He also is the one who has melted my heart with the beautiful things he told Tammy.

Tammy was insecure and I'm sure that she has reasons for being that way, but Chris told her how he felt with actions and a word or two.

“You know that nice for me means ‘absolutely beautiful’, right?”

I'm really in love with Chris. I love the Summer series.
Next is Adam and Ellie. I wonder if the kiss will come into play in the next book.

"I was barely able to gather my thoughts as Chris pressed me against the back of the door and claimed my mouth in a hot, mind-bending kiss. His lips were demanding, firm, slow, coaxing mine to open for him. I was unable to move, enticingly ensnared by him as his scorching kiss robbed me of all thought, all breath."

Counting down to the new millennium, Tammy Maskala is hitting the road with her group of friends, leaving their sleepy Australian town behind and heading for the ultimate New Year's bash at Point Shank.  Maybe.

Feeling a little like an outsider among her friends, all cute couples and outgoing fun, she hesitates to join them, waiting so long to decide that they've already left without her.  Fortunately -- or perhaps unfortunately -- Chris planned on driving out later, so Tammy's only choice if she plans on spending the holiday with her friends is to hitch a ride with the moody, always-serious bartender whose icy glares she usually scurries to avoid.

But the next few days in the van with Chris don't turn out nearly like she thought they would.  Their silences are actually comfortable, their conversations playful, and when he smiles...  Neither being much for long-winded confessions or wearing their hearts on their sleeves, the trip quickly becomes one of growing attraction, second-guessing, and a New Years Eve that none of them will ever forget.

I can't even begin to explain how much I loved every second of this book!  Remember what summer used to be like?  That time of year when everything was bright and filled with the promise of adventure, when little else mattered except friendships and secrets and whether your bikini would turn just the right boy's head?  Put that magic into words, and you've got That One Summer.

Author C.J. Duggan perfectly captures that incredible time during young adulthood when life is simple and romance is every bit as complicated as young hearts can make it.  The quiet, moody Chris hides a sensitive, considerate side, more romantic with his simple words than a trail of rose petals could ever be.

“You know that nice for me means ‘absolutely beautiful’, right?”

Tammy, like any girl her age, doesn't quite know how to read him, her insecurities and over-analytical nature causing her to question everything.  But for all his mixed signals and apparent hesitation to push things too far, sometimes he says exactly the right thing.
I stared up at him, my mind whirring in maddening circles, fearing to hope.

"What are you saying?" I whispered.

He pulled me closer, circling his arms around my waist. "What I'm saying is I want to go to the ends of the Earth with you."

If you've ever wanted to revisit summer, go back in time, return to that place in memory where life was simple and love was just a few breaths away, you absolutely must read this book. A simple story of love and friendship, every detail is placed perfectly in That One Summer, and you'll be swooning over Chris in no time at all.  He's that quietly beautiful guy we all secretly stared at once upon a time.  That One Summer is a fun, simple romance you're sure to fall in love with.

I have no idea how C.J. Duggan does it. This is the third book in the Boys of Summer series, and I am head over heels in love with the Onslow boys! When I read the first book, I thought this is the cutest couple ever. There is no way I am going to like any other couple as much as this one. And then I read the second book, and it took awhile, but I ended up thinking the same thing. And then I read That One Summer. This book is Tammy and Chris' story. They captured my heart right from the start. I think they ended up being my favorite couple, but I think I still have Onslow boys stars in my eyes, so I might be a bit biased.

Tammy is interesting because she doesn't really feel like a true part of the group. Her best friend is Amy, and Amy is the one that dragged her into the group, and I understand that it was hard for Tammy to be kind of on the outskirts because she is shy and hates confrontation. But I do have to say, she always seemed like a part of the group to me. Everyone always included her and seemed very nice to her. So I never felt like she was an outcast, but she did. Tammy is a such a nice and sweet girl that it was easy to like her. And I did, and then what pushed me up for like to love was seeing her go out and push the edges of her comfort zone. She wasn't always the most comfortable trying new things, but she did it, and that is what matters. Its what made me love her. Plus she is hilarious.

Chris was an easier sell for me. I am a little in love with him myself. He is so smart, and determined, and the responsible one. But he never complains about it, he just quietly takes care of everyone else. And it was so easy to see that he had feelings for Tammy, but holy cow! Sometimes he had a very strange way of showing it. He runs very hot and stoic. I don't want to say cold because he was never really mean. He was either fun loving and sweet or very reserved and void of emotion. And it was super hard to read him when he was holding back. I think that's why Tammy couldn't see that he liked her.

I loved that That One Summer took place on a new years camping road trip. They stopped in a bunch of different places in Austalia before reaching their final destination for new years eve. That One Summer is like a romantic comedy adventure. I can't say enough good things about this series. I want to reccomend it to everyone. The group of friends is so great. They guys are rambunctious and hot and a riot and the romances are beyond adorable. C.J. Duggan keeps upping the bar with each book. I have no idea which is even my favorite- maybe this one.

When I started reading That One Summer,I wasn't really sure what it was going to be about or if I was going to enjoy it!But it was such a captivating and enjoyable read.Unfortunately I wasn't able to read the previous books but I'd love to some time in the future. From what I know they're companions but the main characters appeared in those as well.

Tammy was such an amazing main character but she felt insecure and didn't feel like belonging. She felt like an outsider even though she went everywhere with the others. When they decide to leave Onslow and spend New Year's somewhere else, she isn't sure if she wants to go so she stays behind. But of course she changes her mind and goes to the hotel,to find her friends gone.Only Chris stayed behind and waited for her.And of course she loves the way he makes her feel and starts falling for him!

The characters in this books were so sweet and funny.I loved the way the author gave such a true meaning to the word friendship and captured every moment on paper.I also loved the fact that as I kept reading, the story got more interesting and intriguing.I fell in love with the writing and the author did a great job of making the story believable.I fell in love with the characters and every single thing that happened in this book!

Tammy was such an amazing character.Sometimes she was shy, sometimes she was confident and I loved her moments with Chris.Even though he was a bit serious and moody,I think they were perfect for each other.Tammy's feelings of being an outside and not fitting in were understandable and I think everyone can relate to them. But the fact that everybody welcomed her and tried to make her feel better shows how much friendship means to them!We get to see how much she means to everyone and how they feel like she's one of them. The story ended up being really unpredictable and I loved the twists because they made everything more suspenseful and enjoyable!

That One Summers was such a captivating and enjoyable read, full of romance, hilarious adventures and the true meaning of friendship. It was definitely worth reading and I highly recommend it to people who are looking for a light, funny and enjoyable book to read! Can't wait to read the previous books and enjoy more of the author's work!!!

Tammy had a problem – she could not make up her mind. The New Year was fast approaching and she couldn’t decide if she’d stay home at Onslow or go on a road trip with her friends to Point Shank. When she finally decided to go, she discovered that most of her friends had already left for the trip. Her only option, if she still wanted to go, was to ride on the black panel van owned by Chris Henderson. Would this mark the beginning of a disastrous adventure for her?

Tammy didn’t dislike Chris but she had always found him intimidating. So, you could imagine how uncomfortable she was when she became the sole passenger on his black panel van. But honestly, if you asked me, I’d say Chris wasn’t a bad guy at all. But because Tammy had a tendency to over-analyze things, she was often the last person to find out the truth.

I guess you could say Tammy was still trying to find her way into the adulthood. While I was reading, I was a little frustrated with her somewhat childish behavior but overall, I liked that she was a loyal friend. She wasn’t as independent as she’d like herself to be but at least she didn’t blame others for her lack of self-confidence. And when she knew she had made a wrong accusation, she was quick to apologize. What I liked the most about her was her sincerity. She might not be the most positive person but I really liked that she never gave up on trying.

At first, I thought Chris was bossy and moody. But as the story progressed, I found him sweet, considerate and caring. His black panel van was nice… although to be honest, I wouldn’t envy anyone sleeping inside a black van with no air conditioning on a hot blazing summer night.

A light, fun read with some deliciously gleeful, ticklish moments, That One Summer brings us a delightful story of love, youth and friendship. If you’re like me, who always welcome a summer story (not just all-year round but) especially during the snowy blizzard season, you’ll want to add this to your read list. I had a pleasant time reading it and I hope you will too.

What can I say, I am loving this series! Duggan once again has me glued to the pages to get my fill of sun, beaches and yes romance.

I found that in this third installment that the romance turned back to what I love so much about Duggan's writing. Instead of the constant fighting turned attraction that was Sean and Amy's story, this was more like Toby and Tess' story. Dark, unreadable Chris with stolen glances and actions with a million different interpretations. This is the kind of romance that I like. Will they or won't they, when will they stop tiptoeing around, when will Chris act on his feelings?

I have said it before and I will say it again. Duggan has a way of writing this kind of romance that you are breathlessly waiting for it all to unfold and if asked you can not explain what exactly it is that she does. Stolen glances, random gestures, barely there grins. It is all a part of it.

I have to say that I was very pleased with this story. At first I didn't think I would be a big fan of a story that centered around Chris but I found myself loving him. I actually enjoyed his story more than Sean's and Sean was my favorite character. It goes to show that a well written character can pull you in.

All I can say is that I am super excited for what comes next. The story of Adam and Ellie. This will be interesting. First up however will be the novella's for Max and Ringer before I close the series. I will be sad to finish this series but I am also excited for the future work of C.J. Duggan

A little Q&A review.

Who would you recommend 'That One Summer' to?

Readers who enjoy very casual, very slow build romances.

Should I read the others in the series first?
Hmm, maybe. I read this one first, it can be read as a stand-alone. What you miss out on is knowing the side characters in detail.

How were the lead characters?
Good, solid. Though they didn't stand-out for me.
The hero was a little broody, hard to read, self contained. The heroine was a little uptight and lost.

Was there anything you didn't like about the book?
There was nothing that was a turn-off.
It's not plot heavy, so at times it was a little slow. I also wanted the heroine to let loose a bit and wanted to know what was going on inside the hero's head instead of second guessing along with the heroine.

What did you think of the storyline?
It was cool. It made me giggle at times.
I loved the road-trip, the fun, the frolics and the summer feel. That's what really made this book a good read.

This is my favorite one yet! Yeah I know I’ve said that about each one, but I really mean it. These books just keep getting better! That one Summer features Chris Henderson and Tammy Malsaka. Their crazy mixed signals and road trip from hell make for one entertaining read! Their story was the best yet. All the angst. All the matchmaking and the heat that these two generated...WOW.
I seriously love this series! If you’re about my age ( 30 something) then it will mean even more for you to be whisked back to the nineties. These steamy love stories are set in the mid to late 90s. I love the pop culture reference and the music references. It reminds me of my younger days and that just makes these books all the more appealing. You should go out and buy all the books in this series and binge read them the way I have. It’s the best kind of escape. I give That One Summer 5 stars!

Really loved this addition to the series. Each time round I get a new fav Onslow boy - this time is no different!! Loved Chris and was so happy to read his story, since he is usually so much in the background. He is a wonderful character, and I think that Tammy was perfect for him.
It is still wonderful to read books that are based in Australia - we don't get that very often, and it brings back some fun memories of growing up here!! Although I never had a bunch of Onslow boys around - and that is SUCH a pity!! Cj, keep bringing us these boys, I am dying to see if Adam can one-up his brother next time we all meet!!

As I knew she would, CJ Duggan has seriously out done herself again by writing a book that I never wanted to end. Truly honoured to have received an ARC. I just can't get enough of these Onslow boys. With each book I swoon over another Onslow boy and Chris Henderson is no exception. I have been waiting to see another side of Chris, who knew he had it in him. Swoon!!! I had butterflies reading this book and could not put it down. Cj definitely writes amazing books and they just get better and better with each I read. I highly recommend becoming a CJ Duggan follower, you will not be disappointed. Adam and Ellie's story cannot come soon enough!

I demand you tell me where Onslow is located Ms Duggan. I love this series, being transported back to the 1990's in Australia when I was that age, just magical. As always, just brilliant.
