I'm not sure what to say. There's a lot to say or I could say very little. It's a good sign when the reader comes away from the story with lots of thoughts and feelings rather than none. The Vemreaux series is an epic fairy tale. The scope of the world, characters and politics is done on an epic scale. The rest is a fairy tale.
The world was torn by war and comes back together in a strict caste system dictated by blood type. B blood types are the rulers and able to partake of a transformation that makes them stronger, live longer and crave blood. The Waywards, A and O blood type are enslaved, grunt work force and the O are cattle to be drained for B's thirst.
A prophecy proclaims that a Wayward will be the Light that will put an end to tyranny. One that will make the ultimate sacrifice. Three siblings with incredible strength, intelligence and untapped abilities are born in the Americas Wayward facility. Something is killing the Vemreaux. The Light goes on the hunt to find the danger to the B bloods and end the tyranny.
This is not a series you can read from any point. To really appreciate it, you should start from the beginning. I wish that it was four to five because there are parts of the story that are told to you as a lump summary, and I would have preferred to have experienced through the characters.
Frankly, I didn't care for most of the Lie. Too much of the same kind of interactions happened in the same phrasing back to back. 2/3 of that writing did nothing for the story except hammer in details that you already know. Then, I hit a scene that I absolutely loved.
Blue comes across the Christmas gift she had made for Sam. The rule for Christmas presents was that it had to be something that you made or can do for yourself. The gift is a drawing collection of Blue's memories as she grew up and she added Sam into her memories. This part was perfect. A great example of Twomey's creativity and the heart of the characters.
The prophecy and the main plot points hold no water for me, but I'm going to let it all go because this series is an epic fairy tale. Fairy tales don't have to make total sense. Twomey totally sold me on the characters. I do love them. I love the Waywards, the royals and guards. Most of the psychological elements of the characters were really well done. I wanted more world building because the world itself was really interesting. I wanted more about the Anders siblings because they were the heart of the story.
The story ends happily ever after. Just the way a fairy tale should end.
