Sixteen-year-old Eliza Thorn was never supposed to see the people with the white eyes like marbles, hear whispers in the dark and have knowledge of a hidden world. And she wouldn’t, if Eliza wasn’t good at stealing. When Eliza fails to return the jeweled pin from the obviously too-rich-for-her-own-good lady accidently drops, everything changes. Now she sees white-haired, white-eyed people walking among oblivious humans. Realizing she’s the only one who can see them, Eliza thinks she’s hallucinating and on the verge of insanity when one of the white-eyed people saves her from a demon. This is her first encounter with the glass people—who’ve lived here undetected for hundreds of years. What Eliza didn’t know was that the pin was an initiation coin never meant for her. Now, she’s bound to serve not only the guardians who made the coin, but also to a demon, gorgon, and the glass people who’d put their mark on it. The only way out is to kill those she’s bound to, but they also hold the key to Eliza’s past—a past involving things she never knew. With worlds colliding, Eliza is a pawn in their game, and she may have the power to decide the outcome.
I live in west central Illinois with my husband, two children and a variety of pets. My life is quiet, mostly normal, and sometimes boring, except for when I write and cook at the same time, things have a tendency to go up in flames. I enjoy mostly urban fantasy novels, especially young adult.
Jinxed by M.M. Gavillet was a great read. It drew me in instantly . At first I was not sure if the book was the genre I read but after the first chapter I felt drawn to the world the author created. Eliza a confused, homeless girl left her drug addict mother a year ago now and she is on the Illinois streets. Cared by a salvation army volunteer Rosie, whom gives her food and a place to shelter. When Rosie asks about Elizas past, which she has tried to cover up, Eliza decides she can not go back there. After picking up a curious coin her life changes from bad to... well I guess even bad. Confused, scared and hated Eliza is lost in two worlds either fight the demons or work with the demons...it is her choice. I give Jinxed a huge thumbs up and five stars. Now I have to wait for the second book :)
This book has a different take on the YA paranormal adventure. The heroine is a runaway who ends up being drawn into a hidden world of demons and danger that exists within our own. However, before she can learn much, she is on the run with some new friends. There are hints that she is something out of the ordinary, but we don't know what is ordinary. No one gets around to explaining it.
The supporting characters include some whose behavior is less than reliable. However, it seems t be part of their personalities. One character is a demon with multiple selves, but when he mentions that he had explained it earlier, I didn't recall it being brought up before. That is one reason for the 3 stars. Another is the fact that those who have answers explain very little before spending a lot of time on trivial matters, even after they said they were about to explain things. Then there are the multiple editing errors--sometimes a missing word and sometimes the wrong word.
The story ends during a pause in the action. Not exactly a cliff hanger, but with many questions unresolved, and a new piece of information being brought to play that will clearly have meaning in a future book.
At one point I was afraid the there would be a love triangle, but that was dealt with early on, thank goodness. Also, while there is attraction, there is no insta-love, which is also nice to read.
I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.
Another fantastic look into M.M. Gavillet's worlds! Especially so for people that have read her other series because this one ties them all together a rather interesting way. Though she did do a wonderful job of weaving the other stories into this one so that you don't need to read the other books. But having read them all it was rather fun coming across the people and places I already know while still having the enjoyment of reading a brand new story and getting to meet some intriguing new characters. Poor Eliza definitely didn't know what she was getting herself into when she picked up the weird coin she found on the ground. With that one little act she threw her entire world upside down. Now surrounded by things out of dreams and nightmares while bouncing from realm to realm she has to figure out who she really is and who she can trust to help her before everything falls apart. With demons, faeries, ghosts, and more you really can't ask for much else in this entertaining read! And with one of her famous cliffhangers M.M. Gavillet definitely leaves you wanting more. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and in my opinion Jinxed is recommended.
I was only going to give this 4 stars originally. This being the first in a series, but I found the story and the writing really great. The author MM Gavillet did an exceptional job. This was a very interesting read. I enjoyed the mix of entities. Demon's,Fairies,Angels and others. I like that they are all part of the Alliance that protects themselves and humans from the not so nice others that are out there. There is a lot of action and a really great story line. There is a lot of unanswered questions that I assume will be answered over the next couple of books. I'm not 1 for cliff hangers so the end of this book wasn't to my liking. It does lend to the next and as chapter 1 was there for the reading you leave 1 and go straight into the next. I'm not 1 to do spoilers so wont say anything in regards to the book itself except that I hope it works out for Eliza in the end and she doesn't have too many more attempts on her life. Though I guess until she gets released from all the binding's she is under there will be a few more. Also more people she will have to kill including the 1 she is protecting Will for. Cant wait to sink my teeth into book 2 Betwixt.
A diamond in the rough. This is a truly entertaining action-adventure fantasy story. I enjoyed the diverse and complex characters. The plot is driven with the high-pace adventures and mishaps of the main character Eliza. Leaping from reality into multiple magical worlds, Eliza finds herself torn between helping her friends and fulfilling her destiny as a descendant of Pandora. I found myself easily wrapped up in this story. However, there are a fair number of grammatical errors: missing words, wrong words, typos. So much so that they broke up my reading causing me to pause and try to workout what I had just read. Had it not been for these errors, I would've given the book a higher rating. So do I recommend this book? Yes. But I'd add a cautionary warning that the reading is choppy in places. Readers of supernatural, mythic, and paranormal fantasy are likely to enjoy this book.
I loved the originality of this book! It has myriads of mythical creatures, some that you have heard of and some that you have, but with a brand new twist. So what happens when a 16 year-old homeless girl is suddenly thrust into this world becoming part of a myth herself? Well this book tells you exactly that! Its a great story and highly entertaining with twists and turns you wouldn't guess. I would recommend this book for middle age to high school.
Jinxed was a interesting book.I love the character loki. Will was hard to understand. Bea i dislike her.Eliza has bad luck i feel sorry for her.The story line was little hard to follow.I had to stop because i got frustrated. But i do want to read the next book.
I was on the fence about reading this when it first but I'm glad I did. It leans a little more toward juvenile fiction like for teens. but the storyline is interesting . I'd recommend it as a adult read if you're looking for some quick fun for a read for teens.
Extremely slow start for me. Way too many "ands" for my liking. But boy did it ever get interesting! Definitely want to read whatever comes after this book.
