Ryker’s Rules Book 2 of the Rowdy R Ranch Series Kidnapped at age nine, Two is the only name she knows. When her Master realizes his favorite sex slave is pregnant she is faced with his wrath. Lying on the floor suffering in a silent hell, a little miracle enables her escape from her prison. Alone, bleeding, naked and pregnant she runs through the forests surrounding her home with the hopes of saving her child. But does she run right into the arms of the enemy or her savior? Ryker Baines is a no nonsense, perpetually happy and relaxed type a guy. Not much can ruffle the feathers of the almost seven foot retired Army Sargent and medic turned rancher. After leaving the Army he has made his home on the Rowdy R Ranch, 250 thousand acres of prime Texas land, enjoying his friends, the men who work for him and his horses. When he finds the abused, bleeding and pregnant woman at the edge of a forested area on a back field, he takes her in and cares for her. Immediately he notices things aren't right with the young woman. She can’t give him a name, she asks for permission to talk, 'Sir' follows every sentence she speaks, she refuses to look anyone in the eyes and she seems to not have a problem with being naked in front of everyone. Can the large teddy bear of a man show her that the real world isn't what she has been told it is for years? Can he teach her that life is worth living every moment to the fullest without fear of punishment? Or will her Master succeed in taking her back to her life in captivity as a sex slave? Or worse, will he decide she is too much of a responsibility and end her life permanently?
“When I falter he is right there to lift me back up whether it is with the commands or a shoulder to cry on. He is my knight in shining armor that rescued me from the dragon” - Bella
Ryker’s Rules is the 2nd book in the Rowdy R Ranch series. It can be read as a standalone, but many of the characters from Brenna’s Boys are side characters. There’s enough background given that you won’t be lost if you jump straight to Rykers Rules. HEA guaranteed!
I didn’t think the trauma could get heavier than Brenna’s Boys. But I was wrong. This book is dark. And not dark in the warm and tingly kind of way. Stacy Lee blew out the last candle and hung up the black-out curtains. Nevertheless, this is a book that sits firmly on my re-read shelf.
Our MFC is Bella, an escaping sex-slave who stumbles onto the Rowdy R Ranch. She’s naked, pregnant, and severely tortured by the man who held her captive for 10 years. The MMC, Ryker, finds her and slowly helps her heal. But but with no memory of life prior to her capture, Bella struggles to acclimate to a world that requires her to wear restrictive underwear; lacks rules about what’s acceptable behavior; and asks her to divulge experiences she’d rather forget.
“When do I get to decide what I want to do? You tell me to do whatever I want, Master Ryker, well right now I want to be naked and I don’t give a shit who sees me!” - Bella
Bella has an internal fire that I loved. This is something that seemed to be missing (or at least, less obvious) in Brenna’s Boys. Even when Bella is scared, she challenges Ryker and the other men. Likewise, Ryker isn’t afraid to call her on her shit. He’s patient with Bella while also challenging her to re-discover herself.
“I’ll talk, but if I die, I will haunt you for the rest of your life. If Master Ryker dies I will shoot you in the head.” - Bella
Overall, I like Ryker’s Rules more than Brenna’s Boys. The writing is improved and the plot doesn’t have the inconsistencies that were present in the first book.
🚨SPOILER ALERT🚨 🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥
My major critique is that the villain’s end seemed too easy. After everything all the pain he inflicted, my inner crazy wanted to draw out his punishment and see him suffer more 😈. I also cringed at how Bella calls him “Master Ryker.” Outside of a BDSM romance, the title is … unsettling. But the exchange is on par with how Stacy Lee depicted Brenna’s slow healing process. Bella’s trauma is 10x worse, so it makes since that she holds onto more of her past than Brenna. The one thing that redeems the title is how Ryker admits to being uncomfortable when Bella calls him Master. The exchange makes it a sweet moment where Ryker is willing to make himself uncomfortable to help Bella feel more normal. Still a little cringy, but in a Howie Mandel elbow bump kind of way.
