Love Along The Way #1

On a Flight to Sydney

Rate this book
What if the very last thing you’re looking for turns out to be exactly what you need?

Joss Morgan is perfectly happy with her life in Sydney, thank-you-very-much. She may be single, have only one true friend, and live alone… but she doesn’t need a man… or more friends… or anything at all.

Wes Anderson boards a flight to Sydney intent on escaping the cinders of his life—the dreams that have all gone up in smoke. One year. One year of freedom to be anyone he wants; that is, anyone but the man he always thought he'd be.

When Joss and Wes’s worlds collide, he steals her breath—in more ways than one—and she seems to steal all the space in his already full head. Now, life is determined to throw them together and what starts as an awkward dance of unlikely friendship—each trying to contain their own emotional landmines—turns into something they never saw coming.

But can two people with enough baggage to bring down a plane help each other heal? With their pasts lurking around every corner like airport security, Joss and Wes must decide:

Is it safer to fly solo or would a life together be worth all the risk?

On a Flight to Sydney is the first book in the Love Along the Way series. It’s a swoony, laugh out loud, tug on your heartstrings, romance filled with friendship, surfing, and two people doing their best to navigate this thing called life.

Hi there! I’m J.A. Forde

Author of swoony romances full of real characters you can’t help but root for.

When I’m not writing you’ll find me with my nose stuck in a book... Or more realistically, you’ll find me chasing my two kids, spending time with my husband, and helping our household to thrive.

I am an avid reader though and adore the way I can get lost in a world outside my own every time I flip those pages.

I never thought I’d write a book. Never thought I’d have a story to tell. But lo and behold, here I am, and I have never loved an adventure more!

this was a really cute one!

ebook | ⭐️: 4.25 | 🌶️: fade to black |

I really enjoyed Joss & Wes, their friendship & their backstories.
I especially loved their meet cute 🥰

the lack of 5⭐️ is mostly from pacing, I was hooked at the start but kind of lost interest a bit along the way - might have been a mood thing!

I’m still looking forward to continuing
the series though, I’m invested in the side characters as well 🥰

On a Flight to Sydney was smile and swoon worthy, and so effortless to love.  With a slow-burn romance that was electric, emotionally beautiful moments that were touching, and a storyline that refused to be put down, this book was an instant favorite!  If you love adult romance that feels like a movie playing out in your head and will have you thinking about the characters long after you put down your book, you definitely need this one in your life!
“It just feels like fate or something.”
I laugh again, lower this time. Fate? Do I even believe in fate? I must be more tired than I thought.

Joss and Wes' meet cute was beyond memorable and so much fun!  So from the moment Wes gave Joss a brush of his thumb, I was melting.  Even while she came across as calm, collected, and not interested.  And I felt an instant connection to Joss with her good-heartedness and playful nature.  Yet while she kept the majority of those around her at arm's length, her thoughts seeped into my heart.  I desperately wanted her to find happiness in her life, and I thought Wes could be the one to do that.
Tangled up in him doesn’t even begin to cover the way I’m feeling right now.

I instantly fell in love with Wes, he was someone you’ll want to steal from the pages.  He was a fighter pilot for 12 years in the Navy and was moving to Sydney for the next year to get a fresh start.  While Wes seemed sure of himself outwardly to Joss, I loved that we got to hear his thoughts too.  He was thoughtful, charming, and had this sexiness to him that was swoon worthy.  Yet the past haunted him too.  So as fate continued to push them together, I was cheering them on every step of the way!
Being around Joss though, talking to her… It’s as effortless as breathing. There’s a familiarity as if we’ve been friends for years, not weeks.

Every single moment Wes and Joss were together was laced with emotions.  Whether they simmered with peace and hope.  Or they were making me laugh, smile, and cry.  It was impossible to stop the swell of emotions.  Especially the excitement or scenes that felt like fireworks were going off.  This slow burn romance had the most fabulous tension, that was beautifully done!
“Did you see something you liked, sweetheart?”
She goes entirely still as her breath catches.

With surf sessions, coffee, work, and friends swirling around, I loved watching them turn a meeting into more.  A friendship.  And watching that proceed was so natural.  Yet both of them had their struggles.  And those past traumas cut deep.  It was impossible not to cry with both of them.  Yet there was a lightness to this story too, where their moments together were so much fun.   The after-shower scene was one of my favorites.
That look is pure fire, and a part of me wants to burn with him. Damn the consequences.

You know those types of books that just keep you smiling from that first page to the last, while also tugging at your heart?  That was this book.  The characters and storyline were so well thought out.  I loved how Joss flustered Wes and kept him on his toes.  I loved how Wes pushed Joss to open herself up.  And while their moments together were a fade to black, I didn’t need more with this story.  The intensity of their emotions, and the sexiness of their kisses, was done so perfectly.  This debut novel is a must read.  J.A. Forde has made a fan for life, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

PS I loved how he called her Grey!

PPS I loved her outfits and desperately wanted to buy some of them!

Some other favorite quotes….
He doesn’t do relationships, and I don’t do casual. I don’t really do anything these days, honestly.

She deserves so much more than the broken shell of a man that I’ve become.

She’s flustered by my touch, and as much as I love it, I know I need to tread carefully. I take a step back, putting some distance between us before I do something stupid like kiss her.

My only real thought was “mine.”

“Thank you,” I whisper into his ear. I let his scent wrap around me like a blanket. “For being you and for being here.”
“There’s nowhere I’d rather be, Grey.”
I sink further into the embrace and let myself believe him.

Maybe it’s time for fresh cards, or a new game entirely.

I had the honor of beta reading JA Forde’s debut On a Flight to Sydney and I was blown away. This book will hand you all the emotion, tension, swoony moments - Wes and Joss are absolutely perfect. The most perfect meet cute, friends to lovers with the best way to start the series. Look out for this one - you’ll need it on your TBR, the most perfect beach read. Love it so much!

This was a fun read! I'm all for a classic romance right now, I needed an easy reading option!!

I really liked the banter between the characters and the friendship that developed. There was a little miscommunication here and there that bugged me but that's just me being picky haha I will say they resolved it pretty quickly which was ideal! I liked the side stories that came out, they added to the overall plot but didn't take anything away either.

I was a little thrown off as I was coming into this book expecting full closed door (there was a lot of lead up to the actual act and talk about each other's bodies...) but that's on me for not reading the initial author remarks, I could have prepared myself better! Overall I appreciated the fade to black scenes!

I'm looking forward to reading the next!

Five stars!!! I've been in a reading slump and this was the first book in a while that I really felt sparks with.

Joss and Wes were both loveable and well-developed characters. Their romance was sweet and real, and I was cheering them on like crazy. But the best part was that in addition to the romance, there were meaningful storylines regarding their past traumas that impacted their well-being today. It was all handled BEAUTIFULLY, and my heart was moved by their healing.

I can't recommend this book more!! Please add to your TBR ASAP!!!

The way I inhaled this book! JA Forde has such an amazing way with words. Did my heart break? Yes. Did my heart heal? Yes.

I loved Wes & Joss so stinking adorable! The way they showed up for each other and helped break down walls! MY HEART.

The side character? Frank. 😍 Breck 🥹 Jaz 🩵 Willow 🥰

Perfectly done fade to black with plenty of tension & steam!

Loved the character‘s backstories!

Thank you so much for an eARC! I cannot flipping wait to hold my physical copy in my hands!!!!!

No spoilers.

I can not explain how much I adored this book. Wes and Joss are some of the most loveable characters I've read in a long time. I couldn't put the book down, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

The romance was romancing. The slow burn was burning. The twists and turns were so good.

I appreciated that the conflict with the characters individually and together was incredibly relatable. Forde didn't shy away from very real-life scenarios that weren't over dramatic. It felt like I was reading a story from a friend.

Also, all the side characters? Love. I can't wait for book 2!

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book. 🤎

I had the honor of being with JA from the beginning of writing all the way until now and beta reading this novel for her. I was giddy when i found out she was writing and even more so when I read On A Flight To Sydney. Wes is the ultimate book boyfriend, and Joss is a strong female who also knows when she needs to lean on her man. JA introduced lovable side characters that you’ll want to follow along with long after you finish this book.

This fade to black romance has just enough tension to satisfy. No doubt that you’ll be begging for more of Wes.

Thank you to the author for this ARC of this book.
This story went down like a chilled glass of wine on a hot summer evening, it's the ultimate summer book.
I loved the chemistry between Wes and Joss, it was there from chapter one and the slow burn friends to lovers was full of suspense throughout. I liked that the characters had issues and reservations about jumping into a relationship, which were explained and entirely understandable.
Sidenote: I'm with Joss 100% about how she handled her parents, she made the right decisions.
I gave four stars because I felt the ending was a bit sudden, I'd have liked to have a few more chapters because the ending is what I was hoping for but felt cut short. I'd also like a bit more about Breck and what happened there, but that's just me. I'm hoping there will be a second book because I'm not ready to say goodbye to Joss and Wes yet.

I’m such a sucker for a good romance novel! I read On the Slopes of Tahoe (book 2) as an ARC read before finding out it was the second in a series. I back tracked to this one.

Both are very well written and can be read as a stand alone with no issues/confusion.

The book is very smooth and such a wonderfully easy read. (Obviously I read through it in 2 days) It was a refreshing love story that makes your heart feel happy. The story line is pretty good. I found book 2s to be more intriguing though…but I still really enjoyed it.

This book has me wanting to take a trip to Sydney and take up surfing! The absolutely perfect summer read but can also be enjoyed anytime as it is just that adorable and such a fun read. I am blown away this is a debut novel! This book has the best slow burn, friends to lovers type of romances. I also really loved the side characters and the surfing adventures they had with friends. I found myself fully invested in this story and was so hard to put down. Joss and Wes had instant chemistry from their funny meet cute on the airplane to bumping into one another later. I found myself laughing at their banter and feeling all the feels as they are supporting one another other through their past traumatic experiences. I loved how they both were able to trust one another to open up and start healing. I felt a full range of emotions throughout time story and will be keeping Joss and Wes in my heart for a while! One of my favorite book couples this year.

I had the honour to arc read this for J.A. Forde ♡

It was such an incredible summer read one of the sweetest rom-com I've read this year. I adore the writing style.. the slow burn was burning without too much on page spice!

Wes and Joss are such lovable characters, their instant chemistry, their banter, their support for each other, I felt all the feels as they navigate and heal together through theirs past experiences.

I loved the wonderful friends surrounding Wes & Joss, I can't wait to hear their own stories

It's just the perfect ending... A lovable debut novel, I hope to surf through Love along the way series..!!

It is so fun to see Bookstagram friends follow their dreams and write a book and put it out there for the world to read! 👏🏻 This is J.A.’s debut novel and the start of a series. What an absolutely solid debut! You’d never guess!

My husband is a military pilot and I have been waiting to read a romance involving one, or at least a former one! 🙌🏻 J.A. takes us to Sydney and now I’m dying to go for a visit. Joss and Wes were so easy to like and their meet cute was too funny. 😆 I also loved the fact that despite an initial attraction they form a friendship first.

I’m excited to read the next book in the series where we visit Tahoe! I have a strong feeling I know where that one is going and I’m here for it!

I am so happy that I got a chance to read On A Flight to Sydney. This book is just perfect for a good Summer read , the amazing charisma and personalities on Wes and Joss , the perfect Friends to Lover Romance 💕

But I really enjoyed this book.

I adore Joss and Wes , I love the way Wes was with Joss. I thought it was funny when Joss yelled in the middle of the Airport to get Wes his attention because his passport fell out. 🤣

This book is a amazing Friends to Lovers.

4.5/5
I’m not usually a contemporary romance reader (when I read romance it usually has fantasy or other elements, which the exception of Ali Hazelwood’s STEM-based books). I’ve seen this one being talked about in my Instagram circle and decided to give it a try- so glad I did!!!

I stayed up until 1:30am last night because I couldn’t put it down and knew I needed to finish it! Joss’s story absolutely pulled on my heartstrings (and so did Wes’s, but his background is discussed a little earlier in the book). While I love plenty of books with spicy scenes, I felt like this is a perfect book for anyone looking for closed-door/fade to black. There is still plenty of spicy tension to be felt leading up to the closed-doors in this one!

I’m also excited for how this book sets up book 2, which is releasing in February 2025!

I WILL READ MORE.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

This (I believe) is a debut romance and y’all, I will absolutely pick up the next book in this series. I really enjoyed this one and found myself continually wanting to pick it back up.

Now, there were some writing quirks in the first half, that are hard to describe, but weren’t clicking for me. And then I did notice in the second half that seemed to have settled a bit. I could feel the progression of the writing and story as the book went on which makes me excited for future stories.

I liked Joss and Wes a lot. They were easy characters to fall for and their heated but sweet story was swoony and deep. There were many good themes and quotes throughout that I resonated with and I liked how the situations were handled.

There isn’t a third act break up (yay!) but I did feel like the last quarter dragged a little bit into this awkward extended epilogue rather than closing the story out. Kind of like it was setting up for book two more than tying up the ends to book one first. My enjoyment levels were still there though for the overall book.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: low – moderate
- Romance: heated fade to black
- Violence: low
- Content Warnings: panic/anxiety attacks, mentions of PTSD due to a plane crash (recounted), emotionally manipulative mother, absent father, brief scene of attempted assault

I am absolutely in love with this book! Wes and Joss have the most adorable meet-cute on an airplane, and from the moment they laid eyes on each other, they couldn’t look away. I was worried this might be insta-love, but thankfully, it wasn’t. Their feelings developed slowly and organically, and their friendship felt so real. When the sparks finally flew, I wanted to jump in and scream, “Just kiss already!”

Both characters have been through so much heartache, and I was rooting for them to find happiness. The Sydney setting—from the beach to the bridge to the cute coffee shop—made me want to push Australia up on my bucket list!

While the romance is front and center, the story also touches on heavier themes like infidelity, death, and narcissism. It’s a beautiful blend of strangers-to-lovers, the boy next door, and even some fake dating (with a little bit of only one bed thrown in!). The dual POV added great insight into Wes and Joss’s emotions.

This story truly warmed my heart, and I highly recommend it if you love slow-burn romances with depth and emotion. Jessee has crafted a beautiful debut that will stay with you long after the last page.

First of all, you’ll never believe this is a debut! It’s so well written, and beautifully executed! It’s not only a dreamy love story, set in Australia, but it also incorporates an abundant of layers and emotional depth, as the main characters have to deal with some pretty heavy trauma!

I honestly couldn’t put this book down once I started. Wes and Joss were so easy to fall in love with and root for. I loved them from the moment they met-which is the cutest meet cute, to their happily ever after and everything in between. I love that they’re a couple in their 30s, dealing with their own pasts, while trying to be vulnerable for each other. They’re so supportive and mature, which made for a very refreshing love story! Wes is such a swoonworthy new book bf! And of course the Sydney setting, filled with surfing, city life, and even sky diving, made for a fantastic backdrop! I also was particularly excited about all of the mentions of Lake Tahoe as that’s a location very near and dear to my heart!

Overall I can’t recommend enough! If you enjoyed Just for the Summer, I think you’ll love this too!
A big congrats to you, J.A. Forde, for all of your hard work on this beauty! You did an incredible job and I’m so happy for you! I can’t wait for what’s to come!!

Solid 5 stars ⭐️ for J.A. Forde’s debut novel! She knocked it out of the ball park my Swoony romance loving friends! I fell in love with Wes and Joss from the first moment they “bumped” into each other. With such a fun Meet Cute and insane tension and pull towards each other, it was hard to put this book down. I wanted to know what was going to happen between this sweet friends to lovers!

It was fun finding out that they were neighbors and implementing that forced Proximity we live in a romance! And Wes, shewwwwww, that man was not only sizzling but was absolutely sweet to his core. Talk about my favorite Book Boyfriend of 2025! The pacing in this book felt a little slow but honestly, it felt more realistic to me! The readers get to witness Joss and Wes grow as individuals while also grow in thier friendship for one another before they become something more. While also fighting that tension 🥵 that is between them.

I lovvvveeeeeddddd this book! J.A. Forde did an amazing job with her first novel! Her writing is intriguing, swoony, and captivating all in one. I finished her book highly impressed with her as an author and seriously, I can’t wait to read her second book!

If you haven’t read this book yet, add it to your TBR now! You’ll love this one if you enjoy:

Congratulations to J.A. Forde on your debut novel. Joss and Wes quickly became one of my favorite book couples. Also, the mental health representation was done so well and made my heart ache. The way Forde writes, makes you want to go into the book and hug these characters. She also makes you want to go in and throat punch a couple of characters too so I would say the range in this book is perfection!

Forde navigates delicate topics and interwoven them into an unforgettable story of love, healing and learning you are enough! My heart is grateful for this book!

Thank you so much @the.sah.bookstamom for allowing me to be apart of your ARC team! It was an honor and a privilege 🤍

On a Flight to Sydney by JA Forde
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I admired this. It was such a swoony, heartwarming, and emotional ride and I enjoyed every second of it.
The slow burn, (“just”) friends to lovers, forced proximity, dual pov, and no third act breakup truly had me one happy girl because I absolutely love all of these tropes🤩

I liked Joss and Wes relationship almost immediately because of the tension and vibes they both radiated during their first meets was just so fun to read because of their undeniable chemistry.
Both characters backgrounds were very deep and understanding when it came to their trust issues that they both suffered with and also suffering with other internal thoughts. I wanted to hug them both and also yell at people for them even though this is obviously fictional and I cannot do that.

I really liked Breck who is a side character in OAFTS and also known as Wes bestfriend. He was a great joy to read and I am so antsy and ready for book two with his story!! 🤩

This book is available on KU, ebook, paperback & is already out!! I know it’s fall and this is more of a summer read but I definitely recommend picking this up! 🫶🏼

jessee absolutely killed it with this debut.!! 🏄
from start to finish, i LOVED every second of oafts; such a cute fast paced book with amazing characters, mental health rep and a gorgeous setting🥹

wes and jos were absolute goals, both together and as individuals as well! their growth, maturity and love was unmatched🤌 and the fact that was no third act break-up had me SOLD from the second the tropes were revealed! friends to lovers done to perfection i must say, their airport meet-cute had me giggling🤭 i absolutely adored our side characters (except for a certain someone iykyk), wes 's relationship with his sister and breck was everything🥹

and no spoilers here, but my heart shattered towards the end for a certain character (kinda saw that coming, but it was pain and heartbreak nevertheless💔) i absolutely cannot wait for book 2 in the love along the way series, it's practically a need at this point😂

if you can't already tell, i highly recommend this book! quite a perfect all-around-the-year read with immaculate vibes🧡

4.5 - really cute read, especially because it reminded me of my time studying abroad in Australia!

Spoilers
..
..
..
The ending was way too rushed, there was no need for an engagement let alone an elopement that quickly, especially because it seems like the future books will include these characters. It would have been way better (and more realistic) to hear about their engagement in the next book. As a fellow ‘bolter’ this would have put me over the edge.

The Breck/Talia ending was weird!! Not enough buildup in the book for THAT to be the ending. And not fair to Joss to have to deal with this after just mildly starting to overcome her own a abandonment issues

“Note to self, if I’m going to settle down, do it with a man who buys me Tim Tams.”

This was the moment I knew Joss would be one of my favorite FMCs of any romance I’ll ever read 😂

Joss and Wes might be one of my all-time favorite couples and On A Flight to Sydney was beautifully written! The slow burn, the mental health representation, the CHEMISTRY, and allll the Sydney honeymoon nostalgia I got from this 🥹

Thank you so much J.A. Forde for trusting me with an advanced copy of your book! It was a true joy to get to read 🫶🏻

Ok just aww!!! I loved this one so much! I want a Wes, and Joss could be my best friend

I normally don’t like the Insta Love thing, but I really enjoyed the instant attraction mixed with the slow burn. It took them so long to actually get together, that I really enjoyed how immediately they fell for one another (even if they tried to hide it)

I literally bought a box of Tam Tam’s on a recent trip just because of this book

Overall, super duper cute and I’m excited to continue the series!

I had high hopes going into this one—the premise felt like the perfect setup for a breezy, feel-good romance. But somewhere along the way, I just couldn’t stay invested. By the halfway point, I was only reading the dialogue and skimming everything else… and truthfully, I didn’t feel like I missed anything. That’s how little was happening. I’m not sure if it was the book or just a bad case of the slump, but either way, this one didn’t work for me. I made it to 90%, but my interest had long since flown away.

4 safe haven stars ✨

- Sydney setting
- early 30s
- trauma
- flight attendant & ex-military
- strangers to friends to lovers
- closed door

If you're looking for a romance book that still has some depth, this is a good one to pick up. It is a sweet love story wrapped around sour traumas both characters went through. I really appreciated the relationship building between Joss and Wes despite the instant connection they had.
