Harry: "I knew this day would come!" Me: "What day?" Harry: "Today!"
"Kids say the funniest things." We know this, right? And my kids do say lots of funny things. They make me laugh, they make their father laugh, they make themselves laugh. And, thanks to my blog (and Facebook… and Twitter…) they seem to make other people laugh too. Loads of times, over the past few years, people have said I should put Harry and Joe's quotes into a book. They were probably just saying that, but I did it anyway...
Told Harry off for being cheeky and he said, “Don’t worry. Tomorrow I will be as delightful as a carrot!”
My mum always claimed that when she lived in America for a year, my dad wrote to her every day and, in one of his letters, proposed. My dad denied this. But when she got home they got married anyway. In 1966 they emigrated to Canada. They'd wanted to go to New Zealand, but it was full.
I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which, by all accounts, is very cold. And also hot. But when I was four months old, my parents moved back to the UK.
When I was 18 I moved to London and worked in the music industry (eventually). A few years later I moved back up north. Now I live in Lancashire (which is lovely, particularly when it's not raining... which is about two weeks a year) with my two sons and two guinea pigs. All four are cute and hairy.
A lot of people think their kids are sweet and funny and they're probably fine, but Keris Stainton's boys Harry (9) and Joe (4) really have an unusual, hilarious and sometimes unexpectedly dark take on life: "Me and Mrs B were meant to put the computers away, but we didn't. We just leaved them. Like a dead pig." Their collected insights made me laugh so long and so loud that my cat told me off for disturbing her nap. (Seriously.) More delightful than a whole bag of carrots.
A sweet little book of anecdotes on the things kids say when they’re small. Made me laugh out loud and remember a few classics my own kids came out with when they were younger.
Originally published on www.serendipityreviews.co.uk. I will admit to being one of those people who always hoped that Keris would write a book full of the all the lovely things her two boys, Joe and Harry come out with. With my own children now past that stage of innocence, where everything seen through their eyes is wonderful and unique, I found this little bit of heaven, a stepping stone back to my own children’s childhood. I think this is such a lovely idea to keep our children’s words precious to bring out in future years to embarrass the hell of them.
I read this book in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. Full to the brim of belly laugh quotes, my husband kept checking I was OK, as I continued to screech in laughter, through a very serious episode of Eastenders. It is just so darn funny.
The book is separated into sections with quotes relating to similar themes. From Birds and Bees to Gender Studies, History through to Work and Play, we get to see Harry and Joe’s unique view on the world.
I wanted to share with you a couple of my favourite quotes which highlight some of the weaknesses of *coughs* one member of the Stainton household – no naming and shaming here, Keris…
Harry hits me where it hurts:’Can you let me go on the computer or I’m not going to follow you on Twitter.’
Harry:’Maybe next year you can give up the computer for Lent…’
Where we’re going on holiday, there’s no internet or mobile reception.’So!’ Harry said,’that means NO FACEBOOK OR TWITTER! You’ll have to do colouring!’
This really is a gorgeous little nugget of entertainment which I think everyone should read. A quick route back to any child’s younger years. I hope in a year or so there will be a follow up to this. I can’t wait forever for another fix of Harry and Joe’s views on the world.
If you follow Keris Stainton on Twitter, you’ll have read her hilarious tweets about her two boys, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on 50 pages full of these laugh-inducing quotes.
Immediately I knew I was going to have a problem: how was I going to stop myself laughing, especially when I was in a room with other people? Please, I urge you, only read this in the presence of people who won’t slap you if you talk or laugh too loud, because you’re going to want to share this book with the world.
After finishing, all I can say is that I want more. The only fault with the book was that I didn’t want it to stop, although I suppose that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’m really hoping there’ll be a sequel sometime in the future.
I must say sorry to my mother while I’m at it for laughing -and crying once or twice- when she was busy watching the TV and talking on the phone. Yes, that is just how funny this book is.
Finally, I must say that Keris and her husband, David, are raising two boys who they should be very proud of and who brought a massive smile to my face. Thank you to Harry and Joe for brightening up my day!
Book in a tweet: You MUST buy this right now. Seriously, what are you still doing here?
A collection of things that her kids said and do. I have been following this author on Goodreads for years and have seen lots of snippets of her kids. It was delightful to get a bigger bite.
