Rumor Has It

Rate this book
The shiver of something new

Dak

I don’t know what it is about this man that has captivated me like no one else. It’s made me question everything I think I know about myself. But that’s fine - I’ll obsess from afar until I graduate and move on with my life.

Then I’m handed an exclusive invitation to Rumor, the frat’s ‘gay chicken’ club that performs in front of a camera. The one who doesn’t back out first wins cash. Thinking maybe I can clear up this curiosity once and for all if I try my hand at dick, I go.

Imagine my surprise when the man I’m paired with is none other than the one guy that’s caught my attention. My only problem is the cameras freak me out and I know one of these times when I run, it’ll be the last time I see him.

Sparrow

Rumor is a game for straight men to use whatever excuse they can come up with to get acquainted with a dick not their own. I’m the unbeatable - a fan favorite. But I have a secret - I’m already gayer than a pink unicorn wearing a tutu. Still, I get invited back time and time again.

It’s all business until the most beautiful brown eyes look at me and the sexiest body is pressed against mine. However, this fucking man keeps running away. Thankfully, I’m able to give him private lessons in fucking a man, something I’m all to happy to oblige.

But Dak is more than just a good time. He’s a threat to everything I think I know, forcing me to acknowledge that maybe there’s something deeper between us.

Rumor has it all it takes is a single person to turn your life upside down. I think I just met that person and I’m not sure which way is up or if I’m going to crash and burn before I find the surface.

Crea lives in upstate New York with her dog and husband. She has been writing since grade school, when her second grade teacher had her class keep writing journals. She has a habit of creating secondary, and often time tertiary, characters that take over her stories. When she can't fall asleep at night, she thinks up new scenes for her characters to act out. This, of course, is how most of her meant-to-be-thrown-away characters tend to end up front and center - and utterly swoon-worthy! Don't ask her how many book boyfriends she has...

When not writing, Crea is an avid reader. Her TBR pile is several hundred books high (don't even look at her kindle wish list or the unread books on her tablet). Sometimes, she enjoys crafting; sometimes, exploring nature; sometimes, traveling. Mostly, she enjoys putting her characters on paper and breathing life into them. Oh, and sleeping. Crea loves to sleep!

Definitely prefer the non-hockey books! Even though there's no escaping it really because Dak is the son of the Buffalo Trio, and his best friend Ezlo is also part of the next gen with hockey player parents, Max and Derycke. Sparrow also has links to the hockey series through his 'Uncles' Luca and Orion, and weirdly Luca's brother Caulder is best friends with one of Dak's dad's, so it's like six degrees of separation which was funny 😂 I do love all of the crossovers though.

I actually found this book really entertaining, and even though there's a lot crammed in to this book, it never felt like there was any filler content and the pace was always moving forwards. Dak and Sparrow's relationship was really interesting in the way it began and progressed, but they felt really natural together and I loved how the book ended.

I'm looking forward to Edin's story too and seeing how he rebuilds his life. I've already read Project FU, so I know how he is in future, but I'm excited to see how he and Eli get their HEA. I also want Ezlo's story too!

This is my first book by Crea Reitan and I'm a bit conflicted on it. It starts off with an authors note that gives the reader some insight into the book, then follows that up with telling the reader if they have an issue, then just don't read it. More than once. It was a bit aggressive for lack of a better word to me, but maybe I'm just being sensitive.

I liked the premise of the book. I also liked Dak a lot. He was going through a lot when we meet him. He's questioning his sexuality, but he doesn't have anyone who he feels like he can talk about this with. His best friend Edin is not in a good place mentally, and Dak also spends a lot of time worried about him. He doesn't want to burden his already overwhelmed bestie, which leaves him on his own to figure things out.

Sparrow grew on me by the end of the book, but I did spend some time not being his biggest fan. I felt like Dak was correct when he said he felt like he was more invested in their growing relationship than him. Sparrow goes on and on about how he wants maturity in his relationship, yet he never just outright asks Dak to sit down and have a conversation about things he deems important. He just gets angry and pulls away when Dak doesn't immediately open up to him. And he preaches quite a bit in a dickish way. The decision on their Summer trip definitely surprised me too, because I didn't expect it from someone like Sparrow.

I did end the book liking Sparrow more. He is much more open with his romantic feelings. The way he took care of Edin and his 5yo daughter Mo, even though they were Dak's friends, warmed my heart. The head kisses for both Edin and Mo were just awww.

Speaking of Edin, it seems his book is next. Fun fact, every time I read his name, I pictured a big purple demon like man with horns because the only other Edin I've read about is in Lily Mayne's Monstrous series. Anywho, I think Edin's story may be a tough read because that poor man has been through it. Every time Dak would have a phone call with him, my heart broke for him a little more. And then it would pulse with anger at his parents. I hope they get what they deserve in his book for what they've done to their son.

ARC REVIEW.

If I could give this a 10⭐️, 20⭐️ I would do so in a heartbeat.

This was a really beautiful book and the premise of the story was so brilliant. The execution was beyond exceptional and you could tell the characters were well thought out.

When I say give me a story where I get to know the characters beyond their physicality and sexual preferences this is what I mean. Not only was this such a beautiful read getting to know Dak and Sparrow as individuals. Watching them in their daily lives, their friendships with others, how they handled their relationships with people around them. Getting to know their different perspectives on life and things in general. Then watching them learn about each other, growing to like each other, falling in love. The sweet progression of their relationship from fuck buddies to something more.

The way it all felt so natural, like pieces of puzzles falling into place. And even when they had their differences the absolutely beautiful communication between them, their understanding of each other, their respect for each other. The way they both never took the other’s feelings or worries for granted. Their romance and chemistry. It was all so beautiful. Felt like a once in a lifetime experience, like I knew these men.

The further I read the more it felt like I knew them beyond just characters in a book. And I am so glad and honored to have been able to experience their life with them.

The individuality of Dak and Sparrow as characters was so well done. You have Dak who has three dads and has never really had a reason to question his sexuality until his attention got snagged by a guy on campus. A guy Dak doesn’t know but slowly became obsessed with, and would stare at him every chance he got. That obsession nicked his curiosity and Dak needed to figure out if he was attracted to men. That was what landed him at Rumor, and fortunately for him his partner turns out to be the guy he’s been obsessed with. I love how the Author gave us this really beautiful slow progression of Dak figuring himself out. His confusions, learning his own body and desires. And working that into his relationship with Sparrow.

Sparrow on the other hand has always know he is gay. He is not in the closet but people assume he is straight based on the stereotypes of what a gay person looks or act like. This assumption was the reason Sparrow got an invite to Rumor because they thought he was straight and wouldn’t mind a game of gay chicken. Sparrow never bothered correcting them, because honestly that’s on them. Sparrow has his own views on life, where he thinks he should be, reasons why he’s never dated and his ideology on age difference and how it plays into relationships. Reading this, it was easy to understand Sparrow’s perspective on this topic, it felt real and he had a point about some of those things. Ultimately I loved watching him grow despite his emotional maturity and intelligence. We still get to see him learn, grow and throw out some biases.

Lastly, I just want to say I loved how the Author touched on the particular subject of toxicity and erasure within our community. The way it was introduced in this book, the topic not being glossed over but actively discussed and pointing out how people in our community can be so narrow minded and hateful simply because certain individuals do not fit into narrow minded boxes of sexuality and identity. And the complete erasure of the many other identities within the LGBTQIA+ community by individuals who are also part of the community. It was nice to see the topic discussed in this book and I hope it brings more awareness to said particular topic.

Overall this was a well executed piece. This isn’t just another MM Romance book. This was an experience. And I am so happy I got to meet these characters, got to know the side characters and now I’m excited for their books.

This was absolutely brilliant.

If you want to read smut, this might be a good choice.
I’ll admit that at this point of my life I want to read something more than just s*x and some lecturing on perception of sexuality. So no, this one’s not for me.

I mean it’s light and almost fun. But there is so much s*x.
And the MCs think of almost nothing else. “He’s hot, he has a perfect ass, I want to fuck him”. Nope.

But I believe that for a reader who wants a light “let’s f*ck” book, this could be a decent read.

This feels like one long wet dream.
Yeah, a lot goes on and we're on a journey but it's all so intimate.
In Crea Reitan true fashion, we are told another beautiful story about self exploration and love. I love how this author dreams up these people, places and situations and brings us up close and warmly personal.
I loved it, and I adored the extension of love given to Edin and all the found family (and family). It reminds me of the way I used to dream of the world when I was younger.
Dak and Sparrow's story feels like a huge hug.

Genre: M/M Romance
Format: E-Book
Series: Longwood U # 1

Prior reading is not required. However, to get the best feels from the side cast I would recommend checking them out.
• Dak's Parent's book - Starting Line (For Puck's Sake #2 - Standalone)
• Sparrow's parents do not have a book but are side cast in - For Your Heart (For Your Love Book #2 - Meant to be read in order, start with For Your Time)
• Ezlo's Parent's book - The Crease (For Puck's Sake Book #4 - Standalone)

Character Development: 4/5 • Sparrow and Dak were very well thought out characters. Sparrow stuck in his head of where he should and shouldn't be in life, and his hangs up on age felt very real. Dak being 5 years younger definitely put Sparrow in his place a few times with his emotional intelligence. Ezlo and Edin as side characters were just as impactful as Sparrow and Dak. I really enjoyed seeing Ezlo exuding on the greatness of his dad Max. Edin, his struggles were very real, and I could feel his pain throughout the pages.

Plot: 4/5 • The plot was engaging and well written. There was a little hockey sprinkled throughout which makes sense, seeing as Dak and Ezlo come from hockey royalty. Overall, it was about Sparrow and Dak growing individually and together.

Writing Style: 4.5/5 • The book was well written, with no grammatical or spelling errors. Things were explained in a way that didn't feel like overkill. As always her writing made me feel like I was in the heads of the MCs.

Spice Level: 3/5 • Queen of Consent does it again. My favorite thing about Crea's spice is that it's so well written but 100% consensual even with something like "free-use". I never related to a character more than Dak.

Overall Rating: 5/5 • No matter what mindset I am in, I always know Crea's books will be like a warm hug when you need it most. She has a way of writing and making you feel safe, loved and like you matter. I was so excited to read the next-gen of the Creaverse and was not disappointed. Sparrow and Dak were great characters on their own. However, together the way they grew and realized that what they wanted they found in each other was so dang sweet. I honestly didn't want this one to end. She kept the cast small on this one, which I was a bit sad about because that's one of my favorite things about her writing is all of the cast. However, it didn't take away from what I know and love from Crea. By scaling back the cast, we got a better glimpse into Ezlo and Edin's lives. I have already fallen in love with them, and can't wait for their individual books. ♥

Dak has an intense obsession with this guy he keeps seeing around campus. He doesn’t understand it, he is not attracted to men but for some reason he can’t tear his eyes away from this guy when he sees him. When he gets an invite to Rumor, a secret invite-only game of gay chicken, he figures he’ll go and see if maybe he likes guys more than he thought. But when his mystery guy is the one he gets paired with, things take a different turn.

I love the concept of Rumor, combine a game with a sort of onlyfans! Dak and Sparrow just spark off the page from the start. Both have a uniqueness to themselves and the bond they form with each other. Tie in all their bonds to previous books and you get so invested right from the start.

Dak and Sparrow have an amazing story of growth, exploration, communication and truth, that alone had me so deeply invested in their story. But for me Dak’s best friend Edin and his little girl Morgan made this story even more heartbreakingly beautiful. Edin’s story packed such a punch for a side character, if only I could hug a fictional character.

A new generation to get their own beautiful happily ever after’s. I just love this world that Crea has created, to see old friends again and add new ones to it. The characters, the angst, the turmoil and all that beautiful love within those pages just makes my heart happy.

My thoughts while reading (jumbled):

Repetitive- we covered this same stuff in the other pov which is background info for the reader and not needed

Sparrow is a bit holier than thou. And he wants communication and emotional maturity but he is a hypocrite

Also he makes plans and doesn’t tell Dak half the time

A few times Dak calls him out and says he is talking down to him or he could have expressed his feelings and thoughts too

It feels like at times this is trying to be a manual/how-to or some kind of info dump instead of an actual story

Preachy at times- like just be inclusive. No need to go off about everything wrong with society outside of this place. Just let it be.

I feel like we found major info out about Sparrow in the last 20% of the book. Plus the last 20% reads like an extended epilogue

I've only read one book by this author, and I wasn't a fan. I was skeptical about reading this, but I was as curious as a cat. Once the author emphasized that readers should not read this book if they find the premise or any of the what to expect listed in the author's note triggering, I was like, I need to know why.

I'm glad I did. There were some here and there grinning; the spice was hot, the premise was new to me, and there were detailed discussions on the toxicity within the LGBTQIA+ community, which I found educational.

Sexuality was discussed, especially that of Dak's. The author didn't just slap a label on his sexuality. It was developed.

dak & sparrow - 3.25 stars 💜 i was a bit conflicted on how to rate this. there was lots i did enjoy but some of it just didn’t quite click with me. this is my first book by crea so i think im not used to her writing style? it’s very different from other MM authors and im not quite sure yet if it’s my thing. i might give another of her books a go to see. i looooved the plot of gay chicken which is why i picked this one up in the first place but parts of it fell flat to me, unfortunately!! i was really hoping this was gonna be a five star read. i think i agree with some other reviews that at times this book felt a bit overly preachy and the setting quite unrealistic (look i can 100% suspend my disbeliefs for books but something wasn’t quite fully there) and its a shame bc i did love our mc’s, for a bit i was shaky with both dak and sparrow but they both grew on me, also shoutout to those two mfs getting married because hell yeah bring back impulsive marriage in young love, i don’t see it enough in young MM characters so i genuinely did love that. i might give the rest of this series a chance as i think edin deserves his hea and im curious about ezlo too (im unsure if he’s actually ending up with lennox or if that’s a misdirect lmao) , so overall i did enjoy but didnt love !

Writing style not for me. DNF @18%

My biggest pet peeve is an author listing a book as the first in a series... only to drop a new-to-the-author reader into what feels like the middle of a book in the tail end of an established series.

In the beginning, it was page after page of an info-dump from those other books. Idk the character, but if I did want to find out by reading their novel, it's spoiled now.

Between the Writing style, the lie about this being a first book, the preachy writing, the frat boy chicken was not fun of sexy... not for me on any front.

I felt like the author was preaching from a pulpit vs immersing me into a story. If we're reading this genre, we already know & agree with most of it. Show the story. The preacher was a huge hypocrite to add insult to injury too. Ugh. No thanks.

A fascination and a little black card sparked it all. When Dak saw Sparrow on campus, he felt an undeniable pull, intuitively knowing that this encounter would challenge everything he believed about himself.

Sparrow's remarkable growth is inspiring, beginning one way and blossoming into something extraordinary, and by the end, you'll understand why I adored his character so much.

I have no doubt the next book will be a bit of a heart clencher, but im so ready to see Edin get his HEA.

We have the next chapter in the hockey world that of my favourite authors has created.

The kids have grown up and are ready for their stories. If you’ve followed/read books written by the author, then you’ll know that these have come from different series, the author has stated many times that her worlds just keep getting larger, and the cast of characters are large. (Which I love)

There is no need to read the parents books to enjoy this one, I have, so I was thrilled when I discovered that this book would be a continuation (not a spin off) of that world. We even get to catch up with families that are related to this story.

I must admit I didn’t know what a “gay chicken” was, looked it up… basically two straight men play at being gay until one of them “chickens” out. And Sparrow is excellent at the game, there is also money to win.

But what most people don’t know, or look past is that in fact Sparrow is gay! He’s never hidden it, but he’s not your “typical” gay (whatever that means!!)

So both are invited to the club Rumor, (but Dak doesn’t realise that Sparrow is a regular), Dak immediately recognises his opponent. It’s only the guy he’s seen round campus, it’s only the guy he’s been secretly obsessing over!

So, the “game” starts, and both are into each other, and the game. Until Dak remembers they are being filmed…. He bolts… leaving Sparrow a little sad!

Another encounter ends up with a different result. Dak says he’s wondering if he’s bisexual, as he’s only been dating girls. But he’s been thinking about Sparrow constantly. Sparrow doesn’t want a relationship, so friends with benefits suits him fine.

But we all know that won’t last for long.

I liked how this book developed, there isn’t a lot of hockey in here (considering Dak comes from hockey royalty) but I really wasn’t bothered, I was fascinated with the dynamics. I wanted to catch up with family. I loved how they were with their friends, I wanted to live in this world.

I also love the authors note at the end of her books. It challenges us (in a good way) to see better, not to make snap/harsh judgements before getting to know one another.

There is a warning about a few triggers in here. There are a few moments that had me red eyed and snotty, but mainly this book left me all warm and fuzzy.

I can’t wait to read the next book.

From the books that I have read so far from this author, this one was definitely the hottest🥵 Don’t get me wrong I also loved the sweet and love filled moments but the spice😮‍💨 I absolutely loved the whole idea of Rumour, I’ve never read anything similar, yes obviously there’s books about anonymous ‘clubs’ but this was very different and I would absolutely love to know more about it, especially about the ones who set it up because it’s just interesting to me, like how does one think of that idea🤣.

Very Thankful to have received an ARC for this one, it took me a while to get through as work got in the way🙄 but when I finally had a minute I flew through it, it was a very easy read with low to no angst, absolutely no cheating, and obviously a HEA, and a ton of spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️ AND you don’t even understand how excited I got when I found out these will be the kids of previous characters like omg!!! Definitely worth the read and deserves 4⭐️!

Anyway, I loved the characters, not just the MMCs but also all the side characters (especially Edin, I need his story like yesterday!), they were all great, apart from Stephen. BUT, saying that, I really would want to read his story, I’d love to know why he is the way he is because there has to be a reason, and I need someone to show him and make him understand things he reuses to.

Back to the main characters, I absolutely adored Dak, I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him everything will be ok🥹 I absolutely loved reading about how he cared for others, all of his friends really, how for example he noticed when Ezlo was acting differently and knew instantly there was something slightly wrong, or the fact that he cared for Edin so much! He was just an amazing man. I enjoyed seeing his confidence grow, how he went from freezing up seeing Sparrow to asking for what he wants and needs💕 I loved how he wasn’t about to give up on Sparrow and just forget his slight obsession, he literally went to Rumour every time for a glimpse of the man😌

Now Sparrow ‘River’ was definitely what Dak needed, he definitely took care of him in more ways than one🙃 The best thing was when he didn’t even question taking Edin under his wing just for Dak, there was no question whether he would take care of them all, including Dak. Every time Dak even tried to question whether it’s okay, Sparrow was having none of it🤣 And finding out how smart Sparrow ACTUALLY is?! Okay that was a nice surprise, like we love a rich and smart man🤩 I also liked how he wanted Dak to speak about how he was feeling, he didn’t want none of that “I’m ok” stuff, nope, he wanted Dak to express his feelings so they could discuss everything. As much as I loved him, he did slightly annoy me at times, because as much as he told Dak to communicate and express his feelings, he didn’t really listen to his own advice, not ALL of the times. Especially when he came up with all these excuses of why he can’t be in a relationship, or when he KNEW there was something on Dak’s mind and didn’t say anything, and I’m glad Dak called him out on it. But other than that I loved him and would love to him and Dak in other books💗

Check CWs before starting

The Creaverse has expanded to now include the next generation, and I absolutely loved this story of Dak (son to Jakub, Creedence and Ethan from Starting Line) finding not only love, but himself, with Sparrow.

This contained a very unique trope that I haven't read before - gay chicken - and I was a little bit wary of its inclusion. But Reitan wrote it in a way that not only works but helps our MMCs focus on their character growth through it. This story certainly wouldn't have worked without it being there, and I'm so glad my reservations were unfounded, because I would have missed an honestly amazing book.

I loved Dak's journey of discovery, and the fact he took his time to look into what he felt. Yes, it may have been an unconventional journey, but I loved reading as he uncovered little parts of himself. I loved the growth of Dak through the book, and how he took the chances he needed to.

Sparrow - there was so much more to him that met the eye. I had one opinion of him in the beginning, but as Dak broke down his walls, I loved finding out all these little things. And once more, Reitan is the queen of consent in this book and channels it through Sparrow.

Whilst this is related to the For Puck's Sake series, hockey is only a minor feature in this book. Yes, Dak is the son of greats, and his best friend, Ezlo (who's story I desperately want to read) is too, but this is not a sports romance. I love how everything links back in the Creaverse, and it was great seeing the dads in another way, down the track. I enjoyed that whilst this is in the Creaverse, we had a smaller overall cast - it really cemented those beautiful friendships Reitan is famous for.

RHI is a book about discovery, of love, of healing and of helping. Yes, it's primarily about the relationship between Dak and Sparrow, but the concept of found family is so strong, the love between best friends even stronger. There's a strong focus on mental health - both in our MC's and our side characters - that honestly brought tears to my eyes because whilst I may not have had the exact circumstances of that character, I've been there. And it hurts. It's hard. And you are not alone, no matter what your head and your heart tell you.

I'm hoping the hints at the next book are about who I think, because I'm so excited for it, and really hope for the HEA that the MC deserves.

Once more, thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.

This book is the first in a new series featuring the next generation as college students, i.e., the kids from characters/families in CR's previous series. While this is only my third book by this authors, I did have a sense of some of the (parent) characters mentioned from the other two books I've read, though I have not read their specific stories. I do think this book works just fine as a standalone, though I definitely want to go back and read the other series from the beginning. At this point, I am used to the author's writing style, the universe, and the tendency of having a larger cast and I appreciate it all.

I loved this book from beginning to end. I very much enjoyed getting to know Dak and Sparrow. Given that this is a longer book, we do get to spend a lot of time with the two of them, both individually and together and there is really good character development. I feel like I really get a good sense of who Dak and Sparrow were at the beginning and how they both grew as the story went on. Not only did I like the time with the two of them, I also really liked getting to see both boys with their good friends (as well as Dak with his roommates) as I feel it just added to the overall emotional depth and character development. Plus, Ezlo and Edin both are just fantastic (poor Edin - he must be protected and he definitely should get all the hugs) and I cannot wait for their own stories!

The premise of this book - a gay chicken/gay for pay game played at a local frat - was intriguing and I hope we maybe get to see more it in future books - at least one or two of the characters there were also interesting, albeit minor characters. I love camboys and I especially loved this particular spin on it. The spice was well done, there was a lot of it, and I felt that the emotions of the characters definitely grew/developed throughout the sexy times. And while the sexy times were naturally curtailed in the last section of the book, I loved the addition of Morgan and Edin to the mix. I truly loved Dax and Sparrow and want to see more of them! I heard a rumor of a bonus story, so yay! I'm guessing we will see them as well in Edin's book, at a minimum.

One last thing - since I'm not as familiar with all of Crea's books....I hope that there's a book for Enfield and Xavi out there or if not, that it is coming at some point because their story sounds like one I definitely want to read.

I received a complimentary copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.

The next generation has arrived! If you are a fan of Crea’s work then you know how big her universe is with all her books. Well, it just got bigger when we jump some years and get the kids of our favorite characters. And I guess you’ll have to read to find out exactly who makes an appearance! Our story follows Dak and Sparrow. For months now, Dak has noticed this one guy on campus and cannot seem to look away. What is it about this man that draws him in? Dak grew up with three dads, he figured if he swung toward men he would know by now. Or could he just like this one man in particular? He isn’t sure. But when he gets a card from Rumor, well he is about to find out. Rumor is known on campus to be run by a fraternity that has found a way to make money by filming essentially a game of gay chicken. Dak figures it may not hurt to check out and maybe this will give him some answers. But what happens when the guy he has been crushing on is the guy he is paired with? Well things are about to get interesting. Sparrow is an unbeatable champ at Rumor. At this point he sees it as easy money and a way to hook up at least in some sense. What really gets him is the fact that he is in fact gay and no one has picked up on it. That and the fact that he has become a bit of a favorite on the site. Sparrow rolls with it. But then he sees Dak and he is drawn to him. Even with Dak proves to be a flight risk who never gets far in their game but always return just for Sparrow. But something has got to give eventually. Then what will become of these two? I loved seeing this next generation! I loved learning more about Dak and Sparrow and watching them fall in love. Their journey is so interesting and unique and I just couldn’t put it down. I loved getting to meet new characters where I want books for them all! This story was long in the best way. We got to see a pretty long journey with Sparrow and Dak with their relationship. We got to see who they are, their best friends who are family to them, and we got to see them really grow. Great story all around and I can’t wait to see them more in future books and also get the next person’s story! I think this is just gonna be another great addition to this universe!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I've done it pretty backwards and I can't say I am sorry. I am sorry this wasn't as enjoyable (to me) as... other books. But you can't win them all, this is still a nice book, I just find the next instalment worthy of five stars while this was more of... an average experience?

I don't want to go into details this time, let me just put it all together in one big mess:
Gay chicken sounded interesting for a frat-level fun, it absolutely did NOT reflect the vibes of the book.
Sparrow feels very one-dimensional, more about him being strongly way one than him being flat or anything.
Too many characters, I actually read Confessions without my current knowledge and it was actually freeing because I wasn't constantly trying to remember where I know a certain character from and if I should know them. I hope this book-verse has some chart to make sense of this - this series is a culmination of three other series, Puck's Sake with 10 books.
Sparrow has two cuddling, close friends, Dak has his... or is it the other way around? I used to have problems distinguishing between POV's and that happened here too! That's not good. That means the two characters didn't feel distinct enough, I actually oriented myself frequently by their sex things, when preferences where more distinct. Not a tragedy but it's not a compliment.
I kept waiting for Edin to crash the scene. I think because I already had a stronger connection to him, I actually wanted that to happen.
While this book has some elements I liked in the second one, I didn't click as well. Is it the book's fault? My preferences? A little bit of column A, a little of B. Some things I may "blame" on the author, but mostly it's because my tastes matched quite a few things/tropes and suddenly they don't match and I am floundering.

Mostly, I am settling in this middle ground - I now know I am not blown away by Reitan's books always... it can happen but sometimes I am not that happy (especially since I know how much I enjoyed other works). I still have quite a few books to go so setting my expectations accordingly is important.

Crossing my fingers here the third book will be just as delightful as the second one.

⭐ Overall — 4⭐
This was my first book by this author. While there are references to previous books, I never felt like I was missing essential information. The beginning was a bit confusing, and it took me a few chapters to really get into it, but once I did, I was hooked

📖 Plot / Consistency — 3/5
The whole premise about a frat running a is absolutely unhinged—but in the best way possible. Is it realistic? Absolutely not. Did I care? Not one bit. It's fiction, and it unapologetically leans into the absurd, which actually makes it fresh, original, and yes... incredibly hot.

🔥 Character Dynamics — 5/5
The dynamics between the characters were fantastic. Dak’s internal struggles and sexual awakening were compelling, and I loved how both characters held each other accountable and actively worked on communication and expressing their needs.

Sparrow initially sees himself as the more mature one in the relationship, but Dak—and Sparrow's friend—subtly help him realise that he’s actually stuck in his head and not processing things as maturely as he thinks. He grows a lot thanks to them, even though he's the older one in the relationship.

I also loved that both MCs had strong friendships and found families. Books that invest in relationships outside the main couple always make me feel warm and squishy inside.

🌶️ Spice / Steam — 4/5
I'm a sucker for the trope, and this book definitely delivered. Dak’s sexual awakening is hot as hell, and there were some surprisingly original kinks. I also appreciated how much emphasis was placed on consent—Sparrow checks in with Dak constantly, which I really valued.

DNF @ 18%

The start had way too much set up for other books. Idgaf about Xavi's bully love story and Ezlo + Lennox, Stephen's whatever.

How much gay chicken can you win before people just assume you're gay (or at least into men)? Apparently the answer in this book is infinity because everyone just assumes Sparrow is straight despite being unbeatable at gay chicken. That absolutely didn't make sense given how Porter literally told Dak that it would be unfair for a gay man to compete. (They have a guy who's undefeated. Anyone with a brain would know he's at least ok with sex with a fan) Also, is everyone on campus just into seeing gay-for-pay irl? How are these dude consistently making enough of a pot to entice "straight" men into performing for an audience? This wasn't a "safe space" to try exploring their sexual identity, gay chicken was actively hostile in that their sexuality was actively being pushed beyond their limits and comfort levels.

Also, what is the deal with making Dak GFY when the book provides a literal reason to show him having a gay/bisexual awakening? Why only have him be attracted to Sparrow rather than having Sparrow be the one who makes him realize he's capable of attraction to men?

I gave up when Sparrow literally said that he had no reason to like Dak since he knew nothing about him and his friend Xavi basically justifies instalove by telling him that sometimes "you meet someone and just know." No, I don't know and I'd like for my romance books to actually be able to show me why MCs fall in love and not just shortcut it via "you just know".

TL;DR: This book needed too much suspension of disbelief for me to enjoy it. Coupled with too many obvious set ups for other books + unjustified instalove meant that it hit too many of my personal pet peeves to finish.

WOW! That’s one of the many words I could use to tell you how much I loved this book. The way Ms. Reitan developed our main characters, Dak and Sparrow, made me feel like I’d known them for years. Not only their personalities but their likes, dislikes, moods, wants, needs, their friends, and so much more. As for the storyline, Chef’s Kiss. The story is based around a secret club, Rumor, that is hosted by one of the university's frat houses. You can only get in if you are given a personalized card from one of the frat house members. (The synopsis above will give you the premise of the club).

Dak has been seeing a man around campus that he can’t seem to keep his eyes off of. He doesn’t understand the pull to him since he is straight. He’s never felt anything like this so when he is given an invite to Rumor he decides to go to hopefully better understand his feelings. To his delight as well as mortification, he is put in the room with the very man that is his secret obsession. Things didn’t exactly go according to plan for Dak. As for Sparrow, he is totally intrigued by the gorgeous man that the club has paired him up with. After their somewhat disastrous night at Rumor, both men are left wanting more from one another but neither are sure exactly what.

This is a book about self awareness, one's own uniqueness, learning truths, wants, needs, romance and so much more. It’s full of laughs, steam, love and simply all around happiness.

I highly recommend Rumor Has It and I personally can’t wait for more from this series.

Dak and Sparrow are just amazing. They had their differences but after they had the first miscommunication they talked and continued to express themselves without fear, while also hearing the other person out fully before diving into more. 👏🏽 I really just love great communication. And let's not mention the insane chemistry they had 😮‍💨

Watching these two grow as individuals as well as a couple was incredible. They touched on a lot of topics and it was all handled gracefully. They both welcomed each others best friends and they created their own little family unit. Also the way Sparrow immediately took to taking care of Edin and Mo, no questions asked, was absolutely beautiful.

I absolutely loved the majority of the side characters, they were such loving kind people that added more depth to the story. Sometimes side characters feel like they're just added there to be there but these characters really added to the story! The only one I couldn't stand was Stephen, IYKYK, people like Stephen, do better, that's all I'm saying.

This was a great start to the new series and I seriously can not wait for Edin's book next. After everything he has been through, I can't wait to see him in his healing journey and finally getting his HEA.

🎧Totally different vibe than I thought it would be! I have never read this author before but when I saw Gay Frat Chicken I was so on board!!! This book made me anxious and uncomfortable! Very serious vibe; not fun!

Sparrow had me questioning whether I was emotionally immature or if he was just a dick. You know what, I don't even feel like ranting about this book tbh, it made me too uncomfortable and I'm listening to one of Alessandra Hazards Straight Boy books to decompress.

Just know that when Dak shows distress over Sparrow going back to "Rumor" (where the gay chicken takes place) Sparrow refuses to acknowledge Dak's feelings since he doesn't outright say the words. Poor Dak doesn't want to come off as clingy and Sparrow is aggressively opinionated on his relationship views. He hurts Dak in other ways too - he's like unbending and I think he's an asshole.

You also have the types of overly clingy ZERO boundaries friends that I hate. Sparrow has guy friends that snuggle and hang all over him but...wait for this one... Sparrow & Dak are screwing in a hammock or something and Dak's BFF Edin (a dude) walks onto the scene. Instead of asking for a minute the couple, while still firmly cock-warming attached, invited Edin into their cuddle fest and they all spoon. You know, I'm not a fan of shit like that and I was like done with the book at that point.

I guess I did rant😆 I will not be reading any more from this author btw. Yeah, there were a couple cute moments but otherwise I had anxiety through most of the book.

I loved these two characters. Dak intrigued me right away, having loved his parents and being interested in his obsession with a guy he’s seen but never met. The concept of his character engaging in ‘gay chicken’ at Rumor to try to figure out more about himself because of his obsession… Only to run into the subject of his obsession? I was hooked. Sparrow is part of the Crea-verse by relation to other characters, and equally interesting. To say the waters on this one run deep would be an understatement. The more that was revealed about his character as I read, the more I wanted to know. The way their interactions play out and the way they reveal themselves to each other won my heart over. Even among Crea books, this was a standout, and not just for steam or the romance. They just both came across as two beautiful, pure spirits, even when frustrated they each took steps to meet the other person from a place of acceptance. Watching them go from a Rumor hookup to a beautiful love story is something I will never forget.

Two other things stood out in this one. One that surprised me that I saw come up around Pride this year, but haven’t really seen touched on, and that’s the issue of erasure within the community. It was done beautifully here with a toxic character who spreads hate because he only recognizes part of the alphabet. The other was Dak’s best friend Edin. It’s clear his story will come, but he plays a significant role in the latter part of this one. His mental health is tenuous, and the way it was so gently handled by Sparrow and Dak (and the author), despite the lack of support he was getting from the people who should have been offering resources was very moving. I can’t wait for Edin and his sweet daughter to get a HEA.

Dak and Sparrow

Rumor has it... Where to start?! This is a new one for me. I've never read a book with this trope. The idea of Rumor was very intriguing. I was so excited to learn it was the next generation and we were getting their story. I loved Dak and Sparrows story. It was funny at times, spicy, so spicy...yes please!! I think it also touched basis on what some may feel when they start questioning their own sexuality. I so agree with the author that Stephen (ewe) doesn't get a book. I was angry on Ezlo's behalf every time that dude spoke. They're one of my favorites and the pining for Lennox. It really made me cry for them. I kept going please please please just fall for their personality and not their gender. Wishful thinking I guess. So I'm pining with Enzlo on the sides too as they look at the goalie hoping they get their hea. I loved meeting new characters and also more of the for pucks sake kids. I can't wait for more of them. I'm very excited for more books and I can't wait to see who gets books. Also another character I would love more on maybe a short story or novella was Xavi and Enfield. Xavi was so easy to like and get attached to. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for more. I've enjoyed every book in this world and I look forward to more.

"I love this version of masculinity where you’re allowed to grow up acknowledging that you love your friends and men also have emotions they’re not afraid of." - Dak

"There’s still so much more to learn. It’s Dak who’s teaching me." - Sparrow (Rivier)

“It’s a window into exploring your sexuality while giving you whatever excuse you need to justify it. Easy cash. Competition to be the best. To prove you’re not gay. Say what you want as the reason you went, but the fact is, if you weren’t interested or curious, you wouldn’t show up.” - This is exactly what Rumor is, a safe space to explore with a camera and money attached to it. Dak went there because he was invited, he explored with Sparrow (River) and had his bi-awakening moment on camera. Growing up Dak saw a lot of different kinds of people and relationships. I really hoped that Dak could've talked about his feelings sooner. Even talking about his friends took some time. I think that I liked the side characters more then the main characters in this book.

This book talks about problems within the LGBTQIA+ community and so much more. I really love that part of the book because it opens up important conversations and it makes you think about the other side of everything. That really make you think about it. Sparrow was also part of the problem (In my opinion) eventhough Stephen was the biggest problem in the book. I'm glad that his Sparrow's friends could talk to him about that, he really needed to see things in a different way. Ezlo is my favorite (side) character in this Serie at the moment. This book opened up a lot of conversation and I really loved that part of the book. I just didn't love the way things were going between Sparrow and Dak. I wished they could've talked more so they would understand each other better, sooner instead of thinking and worrying about it. Because it really wasn't about the fact that Dak was 5 years younger (Dak 20, River 25), it was so much more than that and it took Sparrow a long time to realize that. It made the book a bit slow.
