Hunted

Rate this book
Trapped in the wilderness of Norway, he became both my protector and predator. When I set off to the remote wilderness of Norway for my atmospheric research, I envisioned rain drenched landscapes and fierce weather patterns, not the brooding and dangerously attractive hunter, Aksel.

Initially, I admired his rugged intensity, but I soon uncovered the darkness lurking beneath his captivating blue-gray eyes. Trapped in his isolated cabin in a foreign land, I'm forced to navigate not only the unforgiving elements but also Aksel's possessive and primal desires.

As days blur into nights marked by raw passion and startling revelations, I find myself caught in a tumultuous struggle between fear and an undeniable yearning for the man who has claimed me.

With my professional dreams clashing against Aksel’s animalistic need to protect and possess, I must decide whether to embrace the wild freedom he offers or to find a way back to the life I once knew.

In a place where love and danger intertwine, can I survive Aksel’s savage past and emerge unscathed, or will I become his willing prey?

Hunted is a 47k word dark romance with heavy subjects that some readers may find triggering. A full list of the warnings will be found in the book. This story has no cliffhanger, no cheating and ends with a HEA.

Boring, Weird, Cliche, InstaLove

This book is beyond weird. I kept waiting for a twist, for this man to jump out and actually be a werewolf of sorts. But no, he’s just a weird man that thinks and acts like a wolf and his whole family did too. There’s family trauma and it’s just bizarre. I also found this book really boring. The climax was not a climax. lol. And the odd going from murder to instalove also messed with me. Overall, not great. I personally wouldn’t recommend.

Darkishly Delicious

This was so spicy and dark that I couldn't put it down. Anything Selena writes is absolutely dark, delicious, and amazing.

Zara and Aksel were on fire. Their chemistry was so spicy, and I loved how they grew with each other. Definitely recommend this book if you want something dark and spicy.

This was such a good book, but what do you expect? Selena is amazing. It was hot hot hot🔥 🔥

The MMC quickly turned from morally black to a soft shade of grey for the FMC

It had loads of primal play and some knife 🔪 play

Wasn’t quite as dark as I had expected but was definitely a fantastic book && the MMC deserves a PHD in dirty talk 🌶️🌶️🥵

Overall tropes where very touch her and 💀, primal play, knife 🔪 play, morally grey MMC

A solid start to the colder winter months ❄️

This could have been a novella because it’s pretty repetitive and could have been edited down. The tension is spicy but the sex is pretty much the same position throughout most of the book.

Selena Winters really knows how to trap you in a story and not let go. Hunted is a wild, dangerous ride that had me on edge the whole time — part survival, part obsession, and all dark romance goodness.

The heroine? Fierce, determined, and totally unwilling to go down without a fight. The hero? Dangerous, morally gray, and the kind of man who makes you question your sanity for falling for him. Their chemistry is instant but it simmers under this constant tension of can I trust him… or is he going to ruin me?

What I loved most was the pacing — fast, intense, and filled with twists that keep your heart racing. Winters blends fear and desire in a way that feels addictive, and the result is a book that leaves you breathless and just a little bit ruined. 👀

Something must be wrong with me because now I want to be left in the wilderness with a deranged man with an accent. This was the perfect short spicy book I was looking for. The narrators were perfect. I could listen to Corvin King say baby girl all day

Selena Winters does it again! Every single time I read one of her books, it's a guaranteed darkly depraved good time.

In Hunted, Zara sets off on an environmental research expedition, but doesn't expect to fall for the dark, secretive, overprotective, slightly psychotic, hunter and wilderness guide- Aksel. But she does, and OMG! is it a wild ride! 😱 The primal hunts! The plot twists within Aksel's past! The obvious (but never actually stated) breeding kink! The blood 🩸 and knife 🔪 play!

It's depravity.
It's total darkness.
It's very ... Selena Winters. 🖤

And I would re-read it in a heartbeat. 😘

Yoooo. Ok so this book is currently as of 9/14/24 sitting at the top of the Erotic Horror charts in Amazon and… I’m sorry but I’m not impressed.

This was a bizarre tale of a fmc falling in love and a psychopath. The literal “I can change him” in book format.

The mmc is hosting the fmc so that she can get some scientific research and testing done in the middle of FuckOff, Norway. His plan up front is to make her run in the woods so he can hunt and kill her. Meat is on the menu, boys! Even before she arrives!

He acts like Tom Hardy in Fury Road (unhinged) from the very beginning.

He’s not interesting, his personality is just being a creeper with a big dick. Then, he gets in her pants, is rough (big surprise), and starts with the knife play. Later on he actually cuts her during foreplay.

Ok. I read monster smut like it’s my job. Some of it involves claws that sometimes scratch, and that’s one thing. But knives?!

There’s monster smut, and then there’s Jack the Ripper porn. And that’s where I nope out. Nope. Not my jam.

And I’m trying not to yuk anyone’s yum here. But given the rest of the plot, it really is just so out there, it’s not even in the ballpark of reasonable tomfoolery.

And that’s not even mentioning the inbred brother-cousin!

Y’all, how did this book get to #1? Is it that too many of us are out there watching Cold Case Files and going, ohhh yeahhhh terrify me, daddy! Run after me in the woods with a knife and mask!

Hmmm. Well ok. I can sort of see the appeal of the hunter and prey dynamic. But this just made me cringe and to be honest, having a psychopathic boyfriend is hard work to maintain. He wanted to kill her before he even met her. But through the power of The Pink Hole, love prevailed!

I don’t recommend this book. I may try to read another book by this author, but it will be after careful research first.

This man, this powerful, dangerous hunter, has claimed me as his mate. He’s my protector, my lover, my everything. And I’m his, forever marked by his passion, strength, and unwavering determination to possess me.

Faced with the project of a lifetime, researcher Zara Driscoll is sent from the small town lifestyle of Minnesota to the expensive wilderness of Norway. Tasked with studying the weather patterns there, she's first introduced to Tor, a native on the plane before landing and coming face to face with Askel. A handsome and rugged man with a brooding attitude, she feels sparks from their first eye contact and together in an isolate cabin the tension between the two would only grow. Drawn to one another, her studies would take a backseat as the two quickly fell into a lustful itinerary together. Unable to keep hands and mouths apart, he truly believed he found his one true mate. Unbeknownst to Zara, his initial plot involved gunting her like prey before slaughtering her in the woods, her body never to be found. Faced with the truth, she's terrified of him but her attraction to him would prove stronger than any fear as the two would grow closer over the coming days. When Tor decided to challenge Askel for Zara, the two would end in a bloody draw that'll leave Tor dead and an entire horrible childhood spilled open.

I am the hunter, and she is my prey. Whether I choose to cherish or destroy her remains to be seen.

Askel Nilsen lived a life many would never come to understand, as he watched his father become an Alpha male who ruled with violence and submission. Raising his only son and half son in knowledge will reign, he never expected Askel to be the one to successfully kill him. From an early age of watching his father breed both his mother, aunts and even his father's own sister, he knew deep down he could never really belong in that family dynamic. Following his father's death, he quickly fled and never looked back, instead settling into a cabin he constructed deep in the Norwegian woods. Harboring dark and blood thirty fantasies and desires, he's hunted and killed so many people leading up to Zara where for the first time he didn't want to kill. Deeply infatuated with one another, he's determined to keep her from returning to the states and within only a few weeks she left everything behind and chose to stay. As the days morphed into a year, the two are exploring their fantasies together, each one a perfect compliment to the other person.

Is bringing her here to my isolated lair a terrible, unforgivable mistake that will end in tragedy?

Not my cup of tea. It was a lot of trying to romanticize some pretty fucked up shit that a psychopath has done with a dash of Stockholm Syndrome. Not that Zara is technically a captive, but it definitely gives off Stockholm vibes. I suppose it fits the bill of smut though. There's knife play, primal play, breeding, submissive/dominant roles, and anal sex. I think that Zara is so wrapped up in her lust, she's blinded to how truly fucked up her situation is. It was just doing too much and even though the spicy scenes were legit, it wasn't enough in this case.

To summarize in the broadest sense - a woman (Zara) comes to Norway to study the weather and is instantly objectified by the man who's been hired to be her guide of sorts while she does her research. He literally starts talking about wanting to defile her and his cock by page 19. But thank God that he's sexually attracted to her I guess. Because he lured her to the wilderness of Norway to hunt her like an animal and kill her and now has different plans that involve fucking her. So its an instalust situation for him, which I guess is good and bad for her. She's still his prey in a sense so that's not great, but he also won't be straight up murdering her and that's the silver lining?
There's a lot of waffling back and forth about whether he's actually going to "claim" her and mixed signals on his part. But Zara is definitely down to fuck him, even AFTER he tells her that he was going to initially hunt her ass down and murder her in the woods. And she's all for his primal shit, what with his need to mate her and all that. Gives off the ick to me, but to each their own. Ya know, EXCEPT WHEN YOU'RE EXPLAINING AWAY ALL THE MURDER HE'S COMMITTED to get some decent dick.
Asksel (MMC) eventually claims Zara as "his" (whatever the fuck that means) and demands she leave her life in America to come and be a freelance weather researcher and live with him in the wilderness. Where he can keep fucking her in the woods and cutting her with knives and calling it liberating her. But Zara is so infatuated with him and his mega dick that she does in fact give up her current life and quits her job and gets a contract from Norway to study the weather there. So it's a win-win for everyone. Zara is doing what she loves, and Aksel continues to do Zara.

Like I said, wasn't an overly large fan of this one, but I did finish the entire thing, so I didn't hate it enough to stop reading it.

Spice/Steam: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Relationship: MF
Tropes/Triggers: Primal play, virgin FMC, blood play, knife play, murder, past mentions of SA and incest (not MC’s)
Series: Hunted - Standalone

Synopsis
FMC Zara is an atmospheric scientist who is sent to Norway to study weather patterns in a remote area. Her boss has arranged for her to stay in a cabin with a local man who will be her guide while she performs her experiments.

MMC Aksel is a Norwegian native and a skilled hunter with a dark past. He has plans to hunt Zara but they disappear when he sets eyes on her, because now he wants to make her his forever.

Review
A short standalone with an interesting plot. FMC is timid but well educated and had a non traumatic childhood, which is different from all the other books. MMC is the one with the dark past and is deliciously book possessive, masculine, tattooed, and primal.

Although this story is short, there’s still a slow burn like tension and a twist at the end.

Atmospheric scientist Zara (h) travels to the rugged wilderness of Norway, expecting a research trip that will challenge her professionally. But when she meets Aksel (H), her imposing and mysterious guide, she finds herself in a world where the rules of civilization no longer apply. Aksel has been shaped by violence and darkness, with a primal instinct to hunt, and Zara is to be his prey. What begins as a dangerous game quickly evolves into something far more intense as Aksel’s plans shift from hunting to claiming. Drawn by an intense attraction to a man she also fears, Zara has to navigate the line between danger and desire. But when Aksel’s past catches up with them he'll do whatever he must to protect his woman, leaving Zara having to choose between her old life or a new, intense one with Aksel. Ultra-hot and steamy dark romance, exploring primal instincts, intense passion, obsession, survival, and love.

Aksel is the definition of an alpha male. His intention was to lure poor unexpected Zara into his trap, hunt her and kill her, but laying eyes on her and getting to know her, woke up something in him that he never thought he could feel. He came from what I describe as the most f-up childhood one could even imagine, and our favorite author not only did but wrote another thrilling book.

Aksel develops feelings and a protective attitude towards Zara, and when danger comes across their path, Askel alpha mindset takes over. Zara is a nerdy virgin who is conducting atmospheric research and finds herself willing to submit to Aksel sexual desires and the target of not Aksel obsession but another's desire to out alpha Aksel. Selena, you truly know how to write the villain in a way that your readers just want him to win.

I gave Hunted ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+++ and 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶+++ Selena knows her spice 🥵.

Similar story/plot as ‘Stranded’ by the same author, this was again messy but I still enjoyed it

The mmc is a psycho with a horrible backstory that’s made him into a dangerous and terrifying man. His intentions with the fmc at the start was beyond crazy but you can tell when his mind started to change (for the better).
Unlike ‘Stranded’ the fmc was actually aware of how much danger she was in and took her longer to come around to the mmc. I liked her character as she had a back bone and talked back to him.

I liked this couple, he’s the dark and she’s the light sort of vibe. He’s protective, possessive and unhinged but would give the world to her. And she helped ground him and loved him despite his history, which showed some softer sides to him.

Overall could have been written better but it was fun to read!

SO INTENSE!!!! There is no other way to describe Anksel.... love love love this MMC....love how this author describes and gives us a glimpse into the MMC...It's perfection 🤌🤌🤌🤌.. I am so keeping this book!!! Getting my hard copy on Monday!!!

"I understand there's no going back. I've surrendered myself to this man, body and soul. Whatever happens next, whatever darkness lies in store, I know I'm his forever."

"What I feel for you is like a raging fire," he finally says, his words laced with an intensity that sends shivers down my spine. “A fire that burns away the shadows of my past, consuming everything in its path until only the purest of embers remain."

Not at all what the blurb suggested. He kept thinking dark thoughts and doing nothing. He never actually hurts her or does anything nc or dc just thinks it. When it finally happens she is all in. I hate when authors allude to there being nc or dc and then its just boring she falls for him he never actually acts on his dark thoughts.

This was an absolute mess. I can ignore the numerous typos and grammar issues, that being said there was so much wrong with this book.

Was is dark? I guess...I kept laughing at the absurdity of everything honestly. Was it a romance? Not really. They had sex a few times (in scenes that were so poorly written I almost fell asleep at one point - not joking).

MMC is unhinged and not in a good way. I'm pretty sure he was raised in a cult because his "trauma" was giving deep woods Appalachian lore bullsh*t.

FMC is just weak. She's meek and annoying and clearly has no sense of self preservation or self respect. At one point, this guy admits that he planned to chase/hunt and murder her and she's like "I just need some time to think" and then goes to him within a few hours. But she gets seriously upset when he kills his cousin/brother (yup, you read that right) after the guy was going to steal and r**e her. Make it make sense.

Also, my biggest issue was the redundancies. At least 6/7 times, MMC thinks about his plan to hunt and kill her, always with the same wording, also in the same context. His inner workings were just a broken cycle of the same 4 thoughts.

With how much this book used the word "alpha" I half expected this guy to be a werewolf or something. But no, apparently his cult family just adopted the alpha dynamics theory (which has been proven wrong btw) and twisted the f*ck out of it.

I hated this book. I don't usually feel that strongly about books but in this case, I absolutely do. I would DNFd it except it's my first read of 2025 and I felt like that would be a failure so I persevered. Honestly, I probably should have DNFd. I feel like I lost braincells reading this.

Just don't do it. There was potential (maybe, honestly I'm not sure anymore) but it flopped painfully. As I saw in someone's review recently "God gave me eyes and I abused them." And I don't even believe in God.

Can we talk about the cover? Selena Winters knows how to draw you in with those “wow” male covers. Seriously, it’s a whole vibe, and I’m not mad about it.

If excessive lip biting, licking, and hair tucking are your jam, you’re in for a treat. If not, prepare yourself—it gets old fast. But if you're after a quick mountain man/primal trope erotic romance, this book definitely delivers, with just enough backstory to justify the MMC's mindset.

What really got me was the constant sense of tension and dread that built up from the very beginning. You just know something’s coming, and when that climax hits, it doesn’t disappoint.

Aksel is the perfect storm of possessive, unhinged, and obsessive—a walking trigger warning, but I loved every second. I expected him to be darker, but his protective, chivalrous side? Totally worked for me. His growth with Zara felt natural, grounding him and revealing his softer side. By the end, he’s the perfect mix of alpha protector and supportive partner.

Watching Zara and Aksel’s dynamic evolve was so satisfying. She draws out his light, while he helps her embrace her shadows. Aksel’s intensity is exactly what Zara needs, and his vulnerability, reserved only for her, makes him the ultimate possessive alpha who fiercely protects while cheering her on.

It’s a nope for me

Alright, let’s get into it. Hunted by Selena Winters was… a ride. And not the fun kind—more like the kind where you realize halfway through that the seatbelt is broken, the driver is asleep at the wheel, and you’re just hoping to survive until the end.

What Went Wrong?

This book had potential, but it drowned in its own weirdness. The plot? Messy. The characters? Inconsistent. The pacing? Like watching a horror movie in slow motion while someone randomly fast-forwards through the good parts.

Our heroine (if you can call her that) makes decisions that make you want to reach through the pages and shake her. And the hero? Yeah, no. I love a dark, morally gray character, but he was just… there. Brooding? Check. Possessive? Check. Interesting? Not so much. Their chemistry felt forced, like the author was trying way too hard to make us believe they had some deep, fated connection.

Tropes & Triggers

✔️ Possessive Alpha (but not in the fun way—more in the “do you even have a personality?” way)
✔️ Forced Proximity (because of course)
✔️ Fated Mates (but the connection was about as deep as a puddle)
✔️ Dub-con/Non-con vibes (proceed with caution)
✔️ Gore & Violence (not the fun dark romance kind, just the unnecessary kind)

Final Thoughts

Look, I don’t mind a weird book. I love weird books. But this one just didn’t hit right. The world-building was vague, the plot felt like it was making itself up as it went, and the romance? Let’s just say I’ve had more chemistry with my morning coffee.

Would I recommend it? Only if you enjoy the kind of chaos that makes you question your life choices. Otherwise, hard pass.

I'm a huge sucker for serial killer romances. It's a genre I never thought I'd enjoy, but I do. Selena Winters is a new-to-me author, so when I read the blurb, I was really excited.

This was a great premise and had an fairly decent start. Weather/climate scientist Zara hops on a plane to Norway to do some research and has booked in to stay with Aksel, a delicious, devilish Norwegian with a penchant for hunting the ultimate prey... which is why it was so disappointing to give this 1 star.

Within a few chapters, the story structure falls apart. Zara just accepts that Aksel was going to hunt and kill her. He moves straight to from "I wanna unalive her" to "I wanna tap that". Besides being very jarring, I felt zero connection between these two. The climax happened about 75% of the way through the book, which left me curious if something ELSE was going to happen. I was hoping Tor wasn't really dead and was going to crawl out of his grave to try again. But no, the last quarter of the book was her researching, deciding to stay in Norway, Aksel meeting her parents in Minnesota, and Zara living her best life in the Norwegian wilderness with Aksel where all her dreams came true.

I persevered though. I finished it, but was very disappointed that the story was written out of order. I think if the scenes/chapters were rearranged and edited, this book would've been so much stronger.

I really enjoyed this book however, I felt that it wasn't as dark as the other books I have read by the author. I have loved all of Selena's' books and I did really enjoy this book, I think I was just expecting it to be more twisted and depraved. This book is about a Woman called Zara, a scientist that researches weather patterns, she is sent to Norway by her boss to report on the extreme weather conditions. It has been arranged that she will be housed with a local man, who knows the terrain and be her guide around the mountains and wilderness. Aksel the Norwegian mountain man, lives deep out in the woods, with no neighbours for miles, he is intense and gruff and has his sights set on Zara. But when secrets are exposed and past traumas are revealed, will she be safe with the mysterious and gruff stranger? Great book with an exceptional storyline that I would highly recommend reading.

She is a scientist out in the wilderness to test climate change. He is her host, providing her transportation, guiding and accommodations in the wilderness. This starts out as a grumpy mountain man type of story but then it goes to totally different places. He has a very dark upbringing that has affected his life, and given him a challenging code of ethics. It pushes the boundaries of morally gray. It is more like morally dark gray. Though they get their HEA and she accepts certain aspects of his life, there are things that are challenging to get past. I honestly wasn't sure how to rate it. Parts of the story and resolution were disturbing... and some parts were never really resolved. However the story was really well written and the character development was good for the mains.

Aksel and Zara. She researches weather patterns. Hes her guide and also a serial killer that has thought of nothing else for weeks but how to kill her that is until he sees her. Yes even serial killers can do love at first sight. It may be a little twisted love but its love none the less. As you can imagine its a cat and mouse struggle. She knows hes dangerous and he has feelings that anger him because he doesn't understand them. If you have read any of Selena Winters other books then you know what you're in for and it doesn't disappoint.
Well written. Great world and character building. Suspense and intrigue. Entertaing from page 1 to last page.

I had to DNF this half way through. The dialogue was cringey. The plot was so thin you could see through it. If I had to read him calling her “baby girl” once more I was gonna poke my eyes out. The man is living in the wilds of Norway. He could have called her any number of Norwegian endearments and that would have been sexy but “baby girl” was as unsexy as they come.

I realize that these books are escapism and fantasy and not meant to be realistic. But the man wanted to originally hunt her like prey and kill her and changed his mind when he gets a big boner and then admits it to her and she’s okay with that because now she’s had the big boner and their mated.

I nearly gave myself a seizure from the constant eye rolling.

I saw a review before I started this book that said, "I kept waiting for it to be revealed that he was a werewolf." I completely agree with this having now finished the story. Usually with books I can ignore the unlikeliness of them but with this one it was next to impossible. Zara decides to go to Norway to conduct research as an atmospheric scientist. The kicker is, she's staying with someone her boss found through an online ad.......So, a 24 year old woman is going to Norway, in the middle of nowhere, to stay with a man who her boss exchanged a "few emails" with. RED FLAG ALERT! Why would you put yourself in a situation like that? Without going into spoilers, she meets Aksel Nilsen. This man refers to himself as the apex predator several times throughout this book.
