Canto #5

Canto Volume 5: A Place Like Home

Rate this book
The Shrouded Man Saga concludes in a climactic battle for the fate of the Unnamed World! The brave clockwork soldier, CANTO, must face the powerful tyrant and return his real heart.

Before Canto’s journey began, his people had been enslaved, forbidden to have names or to love one another, their hearts taken and replaced with clocks. When Canto secretly fell in love with a clockwork girl, the slavers damaged her clock as punishment. Canto embarked on a fantastical quest to save her. He faced the evil sorcerer known as the Shrouded Man, only to learn there were no hearts left to repair his love. The vile wizard had destroyed them. Not all was lost, though. Returning home, Canto learned his people had taken courage from his quest and had overthrown their captors. Canto may not have saved his beloved, but his people were now free.

Such precarious freedom did not last. The Shrouded Man struck again, pushing Canto on a new quest to protect his people. Canto traded his own clock to carry the ultimate weapon against the Shrouded Man—the wizard’s own heart! Now, the final battle against tyranny looms. With new allies and a weapon to save all of the Unnamed World, Canto will stand tall with all the allies he’s gathered and face his evil foe one last time.

I love this story of the little clockwork man with the huge heart. He never gives up, even against the powerful Shroudless Man who has enslaved the countryside. It all comes down to this as Canto's rebels have a final confrontation with the Shroudless Man and his minions who are too scared to fight back.

A fitting ending to the Canto/Shrouded Man story, even if the whole thing does feel a few issues too long across all 4 main volumes and spin offs.

This whole series was beautiful and wholesome. The last bit seemed to wrap up quickly but I understand the need in comic book world. Happy they got to tell the entire story.

What a fantastic ending to the Shrouded Man Saga. There's adventure; there's the large, culminating fight that we've been building towards for the past several volumes; there's TONS of heart. Those of us who have been on this five year journey with Canto -- this was well worth the wait. Those of you who are reading this all together, I hope this is the satisfying conclusion that it was for all of us. This adventure story blends so many great fantasy stories together and is a beautiful multi-generational story that can be enjoyed by many. I know first hand -- I shared this with my niece and she couldn't wait to get her hands on volume 5! This definitely deserves a place amongst elementary comics collections!
