Whether you are a vampire or a ghost, a werewolf or a yeti, a bedtime routine is absolutely essential for a good night's sleep. ? Adults and children will fall in love with Blob and the whole cast of monsters as they brush their teeth, put on their pyjamas, and get tucked up in bed.
Warm, loving and slimy, this hilarious rhyming picture book is the perfect addition to bedtime reading, ending with a kiss and sweet dreams for all.
"All creatures grim and evil,
under the tired sun, are settling
down - and so must you, my
horrible little one."
“This rhyming bedtime picture book is a witty, tender mix of the adorable and the appalling.” - The Guardian
“Huw Aaron takes the traditional bedtime story and flips it on its head with this lovely rhyming tale that understands you're never too young for a bit of gentle irony. A perfect bedtime story for the disgusting blob in your life.” - The Times
What a strange, but really loveable book, with a similar vibe to ‘Fungus, the Bogeyman’. A mother Blob is trying to get her Disgusting little Blob child to get ready for bed, pointing out that:
“all creatures grim and evil, under the tired sun, are settling down – and so must you, my horrible little one”
The illustrations are wonderful – almost every grim and evil creature you could think of – getting ready for bed, but drawn with smiley faces so you know they are not scary (just sleepy). My favourites were the Beastman counting sheep (as they jump into his mouth!), and the mummy child having its blankets (and bandages) tucked in tight. And to show that the mother Blob is calling her child horrible, disgusting, …. out of genuine affection, the book ends with:
“precious little one. I love you, Disgusting Blob”
When children grow up they will, of course, have to learn that vampires don’t sleep when the sun goes down – but for now, let them slumber in ignorant bliss I came across this book by serendipitous chance – and just had to buy it. I highly recommend it.
I think kids would absolutely love this book. Especially little boys.
Myself? I couldn't really stop thinking about the incongruity of having all of these creatures associated with evil in cozy domestic situations.
I mean, they are literally described as evil and disgusting in the book. So why would they be portrayed as cute, adorable, and domestically inclined? Half of them are nocturnal, why are they sleeping at night? Why, if they are so grim, are they all lovey dovey and familial?
Is the author making the point that even that which we perceive to be evil might have some humanity to it after all? Or did the author not think about it at all, but just wanted to write a book about a ball of slime? Probably the latter.
Anyway, it rhymed. It was cute. Boys would like it. I did not.

It's bedtime and as mother Blob goes through the bedtime rituals with her little Blob, she explains that all the other monsters are also going to bed. The rhyming text goes through a vast array of creatures (vampires, yetis, Medusa, and others I've never heard of) before little Blob is tucked in for the night.
I'm not sure young children will be familiar with all the characters shown here. But at the same time, parents can reassure their children that they shouldn't be afraid of "monsters under the bed" because the monsters also go to sleep.
Idling in a Waterloo bookshop after missing a train by an infuriatingly narrow margin, I picked this up to see how well or otherwise Fungus the Bogeyman was being approximated for the younger generation. Turns out it isn't really that at all (and I suppose they have dozens of books about bums which are probably filling that niche), so much as a genuinely sweet catalogue of tired beasties, the art really bringing home quite how fondly one can mean it when calling a loved one a terrible monster.
Disgustingly gorgeous. Racking my brains to see if a monster was left out... Not many. Not many.
So many tiny details. Beautiful illustrations. Humongous smile on my face. Wish this one had been around when my bubba's were little, it would have been my go to bedtime story.
Buying immediately for my bubby granddaughter. This one's mine! She ain't getting this copy! I love you Disgusting Blob!
We've read this book maybe a hundred times and Nur loves. She likes the wolf, she likes the brushing of teeth and the spider showering and she likes asking "Eto shto" for the hundred other things that I simply don't know how to translate in Albanian for her. Very delightful book to read and I'm a sucker for rhymes.
Kids need monstrous books. Actually, kids need monstrous books where the monsters are cuddly, accessible, and sympatico. That being said, you need this one for your little ones. Not just at Halloween, but all the time. A lovely, joyous, only slightly disgusting going to bed book. Everyone needs this brilliant cuddle night time ritual read.
Very clever bedtime book that covers a whole host of monsters and ghastly creatures at bedtime. This book didn't go where I expected it to in terms of it's being a rhyming bedtime book, but it was a fun read. Can beat the humor of the title or the art. Lots of fun!
My favorite picture book of 2025. The rhymes and artwork are wonderful. This will come in handy during flu season with the disgusting blob's remarkable likeness to the Mucinex blob.
I actually LOL'ed a few times with this one. It's so clever and silly. My storytime families are going to love all the spooky characters getting ready for bed, just like the disgusting blob!
An adorable bedtime book full of monsters for little kids who like their stories a little more silly and slimy. It is a peaceful book that can establish a routine and teach fun new adjectives.
So many more monsters than I could have thought of! I wish there was a bit more steadiness to the rhythm as some lines felt a little longer than others.
