An exciting return to childhood suspense and mystery.

*

Sam (Samantha) tells the six cousins she first met in "Dirty Sixth Street, Austin" how and why she and her brother sometimes answer the phone with each other by saying, "Hello, Darling."

They were young children, living with their uncle.

It was winter, a Vermont winter.

School was out for the holidays, almost no one else in the big Victorian house they lived in. The two children, looking for excitement, find a bit more than they desired.

"Hello, Darling," is a mystery short with a lot of firsts for me.

It is my first story set in Vermont, though the narrator is in Texas telling the story.

It is my first first-person present tense narration of a story set in the past.

Though the story set in Vermont is the main focus, the "telling" of the story in Austin Texas is also important, and an active first person interaction set in the present. The story begins and ends there, with the past carrying the arc.

It is the first of three or more planned mysteries, as Sam (Samantha), over a period of time, narrates to the six children her growing up with her brother Matt in Vermont.

"Hello, Darling" is a follow-up mystery related to my first mystery, a short story set in Texas with the same characters, "Dirty Sixth Street, Austin."

It's in that first mystery story where Sam and Matt and the six cousins first met, and the question came up, about why Sam and her brother sometimes answer the phone with each other with, "Hello, Darling."

Not a part of the story, but an interesting side-note, "Hello, Darling" is based on partial actual experiences my wife and I, uh, enjoyed :-) while living for awhile in her home state of Vermont. We are currently back in my home state, Texas.

With all the best wishes,

Adan

My second mystery short story, this one set in Vermont. My wife Sheila says it's her favorite of my work so far. I don't suppose Vermont being her home state is the real reason. :-) Based on a real incident she and I experienced, living in her wonderful beautiful home town of Burlington, in one tiny aspect. What is that! - "Hello, Darling" - and where is it coming from!
