Brain Waves

Rate this book
CoDee is a brain damaged young man living on a dusty, dirty desert world. He is barely functional but owns an old junk yard. He hates it when dead animals are dumped in the yard. He says it "hurts his heart" to deal with them. The world he lives on caters to the older poorer freighters and trading ships. A ship rescued a member of a feline species with massive injuries. The cat is dumped in his yard barely alive. The female cat asks for CoDee's help. He does the best he can. Cat can help heal him, but first she must mend. Cat's efforts to help CoDee reveals memories of the individual who nearly killed him, his father.

Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here for 37 years, I have survived -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and live in a cabin. I used a fish wheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and only roadie. I cut firewood on shares, worked as a cocktail waitress, then as a paralegal for over 26 years. I hold the #80 press card as a reporter for the Copper Valley Views newspaper which ceased publication in the 1980s. I've been writing stories since junior high. Retired now, I can devote my time to what I love.
I came to Alaska by way of Arizona and California. I experienced the building of the pipeline up close. Then my second husband and I moved to Wasilla to get warm. It hardly ever drops past -25 in South Central Alaska. I never thought I would love it so much I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years . I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with.

Brain Waves is a unique and beautiful love story between two different species, that's set on a desert-like planet. It's certainly not your typical setting for love, but the harshness of the planet and the obstacles they both have to overcome brings out the delicate nature of their growing and possibly forbidden love.

The beginning of the story has the feel of "Flowers for Algernon." CoDee was brain-damaged as a child, but Cat, the feline he saves from death, untangles the knots in his brain, and in the process unravels lost memories. They both heal each other and teach each other to love.

I highly recommend this story if you are looking for something a little different.

Part of a fantasy box set I am reading, this story was a surprise and different from anything I have read before.

An original concept about an unusual relationship, this story deals with many issues such as betrayal, loss, anger, love and forgiveness. CoDee is alone and suffers from brain damage, and then... I don't give spoilers.

This is a well written tale in an easy to read style that pulls the reader through an interesting plot set in a future harsh 'otherworld'. Great characters make this fantasy believable and enjoyable.

Highly recommended.

Even though this book had the potential of being a promising Flowers of Algernon remake, MacFarlane trashes that chance with cheesy love, and law of attraction aspects. Story happens to be advancing too fast. With one of the protagonists being a deus ex machina, any problem is solved like a piece of cake. And that love part is not a fantasy, but borderline bestiality.

This was brought to my attention via a what's this book thread on Reddit. Although I don't really like cats, the idea piqued my curiosity. I enjoyed the beginning very much, but as it went on it became a little predictable. And it's centered on a very weird relationship, nothing nasty, but not my cup of tea.

In a far off planet in the future, lives CoDee who was abused as a child and as a result suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He looks after himself, living on the junkyard where he was born. People keep out of his way and he makes sure to keep out of theirs. Along comes Cat, abandoned on the junkyard and left to die, CoDee takes it upon himself to try and nurse the kitty to health, or at least, keep her warm and fed until the end comes. There begins a friendship unlike no other I have read about. Cat is able to enter CoDee's mind, talk with him telepathically and help to undo some of the damage done by his injury.

This isn't my usual genre, and so I was gladly surprised to find it a delightful read. I was enamoured with the story and Cat and CoDee's connection, which seemed to grow stronger as time went on. I was hopeful for a happy ending, and one where they could enjoy each other's company for the rest of their natural lives. Cherime MacFarlane has done a wonderful job choosing an unique plot and set of characters and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

A Metamorphis of the Heart and Mind:
This is a unique story of a young man, CoDee, who suffered a severe accident at the hands of evil when he was little. This left him a little boy in a man's body for the rest of his life...or so he thought. Circumstances played a strong roll, when someone drops a cat, who was near death, in his yard. The more he nursed her back to health, the stronger CoDee's mind got.
Unfortunately, as his mind cleared, CoDee uncovered the truth of events of his past that he hoped to forget. Will another dark figure from his past push CoDee beyond his own heart limits, crossing into the realm of vengeance? Can this mysterious feline help him discover the path of forgiveness to reach the life of true joy?
Dive into the future planet world of Estevan to see how all of these developments play out!

Uplifting

This is an unusual story of a friendship between a young man who has suffered brain damage, and a cat. Not a small domestic cat, a large one.

CoDee rescues the injured cat from the junkyard. They form a bond and communicate telepathically. Together they help each other heal both physically and emotionally. This is a touching story that takes place on a mysterious dystopian planet. Well done!

Thought it was a interesting story and prepared to give it 4 stars until the last chapter felt like it was just dropped.
