I really wish I could give half stars across platforms, because I’d be giving this book 3.5 stars. I also think it’s only fair to the author to mention that I read this book during a traumatic event in my life, when nothing has been able to spark real joy. I want to reread it (yes, it’s definitely good enough for that) at a time when my emotions are in a better place.

With that being said, let’s discuss The Fire Chief’s Surprise a little more.

Josh Rogers is the fire chief for a small town called Sweetwater. The position is challenging on its own, but he’s also the single father to Finn, who was left in his care after his foster brother and sister-in-law passed away in an accident. Josh loves being Finn’s dad, but his brother left a stipulation in the will—Josh has three months to marry in order to keep custody. Local baker Annie Greene cares deeply about Finn and wants to make sure he stays with Josh, so she offers to help him find a wife.

This is an endearing story of loss, forgiveness, Christ’s love, and a close-knit small town.

I appreciated that Schmidt wasn’t afraid to address sensitive subjects and wove them into the story in a way that gets to the heart of the matter. I really liked Annie and felt I could understand her internal dialogue. Josh and Finn’s connection is sweet and heartwarming. I love the way Josh confidently carries a diaper bag like it’s no big deal.

I did struggle with the number of characters, the background information about them, and keeping everyone straight. Eventually, I stopped trying to focus on the secondary characters and turned my attention to Josh and Annie—which helped a lot.

If you’re a small-town romance fan, you’ll enjoy this book. Readers who seek out books with Christian themes will appreciate the message of our Father’s love throughout. Pick this up—you won’t regret it.

Such a sweet story! What was the fire chief's surprise? Becoming the temporary guardian of his late foster brother's son, baby Finn. And then learning that Finn’s official adoption is contingent on him marrying within 3 months! I’d say that’s quite the surprise. *And no, that's not a spoiler. It's in the synopsis.

When Annie, the local baker, runs into hard times and needs the fire chief’s help, they strike a deal: he’ll fix the faulty wiring at her bakery, and she’ll help him find a wife. But forced proximity is in the works for these two... confusing them both as they wrestle between their own plans and God's best plans for them.

Before either can step into the future, they need to come clean about their pasts, accept that they are still worthy of love and a future, and maybe even allow themselves to dream of something special together.

This was SO sweet! I love it when there’s matchmaking involved and it doesn’t quite go as planned. Honestly, these two were at odds to start with, so it was such a sweet story to experience.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

Fire chief Josh was made legal guardian over his foster brothers 9 month old son Finn due to a a tragic accident and in order to keep Finn from going into the foster system like he did, he agrees to the guardianship. Little did he know it came with a huge stipulation. He has to get married within 3 months or he will lose custody of Finn. Josh and Annie have been friends for a long time, but when Josh has to do a surprise inspection on her bakery, it resulted in a huge fine and tension between the two of them. However, when she learns of Josh’s dilemma and with baby Finn tugging on her heartstrings, she sets aside her differences in order to help Josh find a wife in exchange for him helping her get the bakery up and running again. Even though Annie always vowed never to fall for a man in uniform, will she be able to continue to see Josh as a friend or will their relationship grow deeper? Will Josh be able to find a wife within 3 months to avoid losing Finn? You will have to get the book and find out for yourself. The author did an amazing job with this storyline and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this book and fall in love with the characters. I highly recommend this book.

This is the first book I have read by this author. While this is a love inspired romance, there was some mystery involved in the story. I thought that it was quite original of the author to make it so that the main male character has to get married in order to keep the son of his foster brother who was killed in an accident with his wife. I liked the town legend that is mentioned throughout the novel. I enjoyed reading about all the characters in this book and would love to read future books with these same characters. I could see myself living in Sweetwater. This book was such a great read. I would definitely recommend it.

Small towns, firefighters, bakeries, and a baby...what could be sweeter than all of those? Add in a touch of romance, and a dose of faith, and you have a story that's pretty much perfect.
I enjoyed watching the relationship grow between Josh and Annie, even though they tried to fight it. But when you're working toward what is best for a child, and putting your faith in God, well, His way is going to win out in the end.
If you enjoy sweet, small town, contemporary Christian romance, this is a must-add to your TBR list.

Fire chief, a beautiful baker and the cutest little boy. I love that there is a little mystery involved in this book as well as forced proximity. The baker (Annie) agrees to help the fire chief (Josh) in finding a wife so he can keep custody of Finn( the baby). If you can keep those 3 characters straight and focus on the story it will flow allot better. I was getting a little lost with all the characters. Simplify and it’s a heart warming story that you will be glad you read! Wish I could give it a 4.5 instead. Can’t do half stars. Worth the read!

The Fire Chief’s Surprise by Chris Maday Schmidt is a charming friends-to-more Love Inspired book with two characters who must learn that their pasts don’t define them.

After receiving the heartbreaking news that his foster brother along with his wife have been killed in an accident, Fire Chief Josh Rogers finds that he’s been named as their baby Finn’s guardian. When he returns to his home in the small town of Sweetwater, his friend and attorney/constable Jake surprises him with a codicil to the guardianship; in order to retain custody of Finn, Josh must marry within three months, so Finn can have a family.

The last time Annie Greene saw Josh, they’d had an argument over a fine that Josh, as fire chief, had to issue to Annie’s bakery. He’s understandably nervous about seeing her again, but Finn provides a bridge that heals their rift and restores their friendship. As Annie loses her heart to little Finn, she can’t stand the thought of Josh losing custody, so she volunteers to help Josh find a wife. I’m sure you can guess how that goes!

This story was so sweet and heartwarming, yet it had a real depth to it that spoke to my heart. Like Annie and Josh, we may feel as if our pasts define who we are. However, if you are a Christian – which, in the story, Josh and Annie both are – God doesn’t see our past sins. He sees us through the blood of His Son Jesus. Jesus, who literally became the sin of the entire world. We are not our past. Annie and Josh eventually come to accept this truth. I loved how they each thought that the other wouldn’t see them in the same light when they knew the truths of their pasts. It’s so us!

The Fire Chief’s Surprise is the first book I’ve read by Chris Maday Schmidt, but it won’t be the last! I’ll need to check out her other books set in Sweetwater because I really enjoyed the side characters and the small town vibe.

I highly recommend The Fire Chief’s Surprise for its heartwarming romance, charming small town setting, multi-layered characters, and its spiritual themes. 5 stars!

It’s kinda hard not to fall in love with a man willing to become an instant father so Annie was already fighting a losing battle when it came to Josh. This was such a sweet romance and I loved the depth of feeling that developed between them, not just for each other but for Finn. Apparently Annie and Josh met in the previous book in the series. Now I have to go back to read it because it sounded like a fun meet-cute. While I was surprised and didn’t care for what transpired between Josh’s friends, I had to applaud the way he handled the situation. Ultimately, I really loved the inspirational message woven into this romance.

What do you get when you combine a handsome fireman chief, the resident baker and an adorable baby in a small town setting? You get a really sweet story that is sure to make you smile! I enjoyed this book, it has a touch of mystery to go with a fun friends to more romance which is one of my favorite tropes. I also really liked how the author used both Annie and Josh’s backstories in the elements keeping them apart. That added a great layer to the book. I was also happy to learn that this is the author’s second story featuring these characters and I have already added the first book to my TBR pile. Looking forward to reading Jack & Emerson’s story as well.

A touching story of how traumas from the past can be a challenge to individuals trying to move forward into a future filled with love and happiness . . .

Baker Annie Greene harbors a secret from her past that causes her to experience grief and sadness each time it creeps into her mind—which is often.

Fire Chief Josh Rogers likewise bears the shame of something that happened in his younger years. He keeps it to himself because he is ashamed to admit what transpired back then.

When his foster brother and wife die tragically and unexpectedly, Josh is named the legal guardian of their baby--Finn Ryan. Finn is an adorable baby a few months short of one year, who is naturally struggling with the loss of his parents.

Josh is committed to making a good home for Finn, and he receives strong support from his community and church. I enjoyed the author's depiction of this part of the plot.

My favorite part of the story is the strong faith thread which runs throughout the entire book. Many scriptures are sprinkled within the pages and thoughts of the two main characters, which I felt added meaning to the feeling tone of the tale.

This book is completely clean in language and content. I received a copy of the book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

THE FIRE CHIEF’S SURPRISE by Chris Maday Schmidt is the exceptional, pull at your heartstring story of Fire Chief Josh Rogers and Annie Greene, owner of Annie’s Confections & Catering.

Josh was raised in the foster system moved from one foster home to another. The only highlight of his growing up years was meeting his best friend and foster brother, Spencer. It broke his heart to learn that Spencer and his wife had both been killed in an automobile accident. Then he was totally shocked to find out he was listed as the sole guardian of their infant son, Finn. After returning home with Finn, he found out that in order to complete the guardianship, Josh much be married within a 3-month time frame. His upbringing had left him feeling unworthy of being loved and he had sworn never to put himself in the position of being disposed of again. He’s never considered marriage as part of his life. How was this ever going to work?

Annie’s young life wasn’t an easy one. Her mother died and then her father died in the line of duty as a fireman. Having lived the hazardous life of a fireman’s family, Annie has sworn off men in uniform. If it hadn’t been for Nana Anabelle taking Annie in and sharing her faith, Annie hates to think what her life might have been like. She still made some mistakes, including a big one, and some decisions were extremely hard to make. Due to Nana’s declining health, it was the only decision possible. Yet it left her with a secret she’s still too ashamed to tell anyone. It’s her continually growing faith that’s gotten her to where she is today. After getting the building and making her dream of having a bakery come true, maybe her life is headed in the right direction. Now that the bakery is up and successfully running, she has big dreams for an expansion she’s planned for a café. However, it seems like that for every step forward that there’s two steps back. She’s even begun to wonder if there’s some trickery behind some of the bad events. She knows though that if it’s meant to be, it will be.

Josh and Annie have been friends for some time. Lately though, it’s taken on a cool spell when Josh gave Annie a ticket after an inspection that Annie didn’t think was call for. Their first meeting after that episode was when Josh returned to town with Finn in tow. He’d gone to the bakery for some sweet pastries. At first Annie was standoffish caused from flashbacks from her past, but she quickly recovered. She instantly fell in love with the cute little boy. When she hears of Josh’s quandary, she offers to help by getting an ad put in the paper and then screening the applicants for him for a possible wife. In exchange, maybe he can help her with some things needed done in order to meet her grand opening date. With no other choices, he agrees to it because he not only can’t disappoint his foster brother, but he’s already fallen for this little one as if he were his own son.

Will they be able to find a wife for Josh in time? Through caring for Finn, will it have Josh and Annie repairing their friendship? Will Annie be able to raise enough money to keep Hope House, a place dear to her heart, afloat? When word gets out that Annie’s needing help, will their small town rally around one of their own? Will the legend of Sweetwater fulfill itself with another successful match? Will secrets on both their parts keep Josh and Annie from getting what they dare to dream of?

THE FIRE CHIEF’S SURPRISE is an amazing, heart-tugging story of Josh and Annie. Read as they try to come to terms with their individual past, work their way through a few roadblocks they start to wonder if they’re just misfortune or sabotage, and as each begin to wonder if they could possibly be more than friends. You are bound to fall in love with one little baby boy, whose whole future hinges on the past and hangs in the balance. Chris Maday Schmidt gives us a story of daring to seeing oneself through the eyes of another, taking a leap of faith that things will work out, learning that sometimes you have to make yourself vulnerable for the sake of a happy ending, that secrets only hurt the one keeping them, an inspirational romance, that there’s nothing like the love for a child to bring out a best in a person making them forget all they said they’d never do and do all they can, and wraps it all in a wonderful thread of faith. You are going to love Nana Anabelle’s quotes and favorite scriptures that are expertly woven though out the story. THE FIRE CHIEF’S SURPRISE is positively FIVE STAR reading! I highly recommend this feel-good story to everyone.

I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

This was a very sweet, heartwarming story of found family and found love no matter the past.

Fire Chief Josh Rogers is a brand-new dad as he has been given custody of his foster brother's son after their tragic deaths. Josh has no idea how to raise the little boy, but he knows he would sacrifice anything for the little guy and keep him out of the foster care system. Struggling with work and baby, things seem to go from bad to worse when he finds out there is an addendum to the will. He must marry within three months to keep custody of Finn. What's a guy to do?

What follows is a sort of modern mail order bride situation. Josh enlists the help of Annie, the baker to help him find a wife. I found their situation a bit comical as being the fire chief, Josh had to fine Annie and her business. So, they already have a bit of grief with one another. Top that off with the attraction they have been keeping a secret from one another too.

Annie was a character that had some scars from her past, ones she felt that she could only carry alone. Even though she cared a lot about Josh and Finn, she really did think her past would be a deal breaker with Josh. I found their pasts situations unique and combined together would make a stronger more reliable future for young Finn and any other children that came along. They just needed to see that for themselves.

This was a faith filled novel about letting go of the past and forgiving oneself of that past and stepping into a much brighter future.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

The Fire Chief's Surprise by Chris Maday Schmidt
An Uplifting Inspirational Romance

Christian Romance is a genre that really picques my interest. I absolutely am interested in the LOVE Inspired series of books. The Fire Chief's Surprise by Chris Maday Schmidt is the most recent book in the LOVE Inspired Collection that I have read.

The storyline in this book is OHHHH, so sweet. The 2 main characters are Fire chief Josh Rogers and Annie Greene. Josh and Annie have been friends for a long time. Josh is the Fire Chief of the town and Annie owns a bakery in town. Josh is assigned to do an inspection on Annie's Bakery. The inspection doesn't go well for Annie and she asks Josh to help do the work needed to pass. Josh is in a situation that he only has 3 months to resolve. He needs to find a wife or lose custody of his nephew, Finn, that he hopes to adopt in the future. Josh lost his brother recently and wants to adopt the son his brother left behind. Annie and Josh make a "barter", Josh fixes the Inspection issues and Annie helps Josh find a wife. I really LOVE how the story takes a beautiful change. Josh and Annie are beginning to have feelings for one another. Josh also observes how caring and tender Annie is with Finn. Annie is holding onto frustation toward Josh over the failed inspection, but soon realizes that the "hunt for a wife for Josh" might just need to be inside her heart. I really LOVE how Annie realizes she wasn't opening her heart fully and they both could have an instant family for Finn. The story is one of Friends, Faith, Family and trusting God's plan over our own. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Romance. GREAT BOOK!

Fire Chief Josh Rogers has admired bakery owner Annie Greene for a while. She's made it clear that a man in uniform is not the man for her. Now Josh is unexpectedly the legal guardian for his late foster brother's baby boy, and he needs help. To top it off, he is under a time crunch to get married and provide Finn a mother or risk losing custody. Annie's determined to help him find a prospect and keep Finn, but could the answer to his prayers be right in front of his face?
It was so nice to be back in Sweetwater, not only to read Josh and Annie's love story, but to catch up with past characters/friends. This is a town I would love to live in. The people genuinely care for one another and want to support each other. Both Josh and Annie have their own secrets and emotional burdens, but author Chris Maday Schmidt beautifully shows how the Lord gently works in each of them to overcome them. I could easily picture sweet little Finn's smiley face and little hands. The Fire Chief's Surprise is a wonderful story, and while it is stand-alone, if you haven't read A Father's Vow yet, I'd encourage you to read that, too! Plus we know how I love an epilogue, and this book has one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

Josh, the town’s fire chief, was raised in foster care. The only true family connection he has known is his foster brother Spencer. So when Spencer and his wife tragically die in a car accident Josh finds himself named as the guardian for their baby son. As he navigates the new challenges of juggling his job along with the responsibilities that come with a baby he is stunned to learn that he has only 3 months to marry or he will lose custody of the child that has stolen his heart.

There’s only one woman Josh has feelings for, but Annie lost her father in the line of duty and has sworn off men in uniform. As Annie and Josh both fight their feelings for each other their friends rally around them. As Annie vows to find Josh a wife, and Josh helps her with her bakery and cafe their bond becomes even stronger. Can they overcome the secrets of their past with the shame they still carry from their youth, and allow their love for each other to overcome their fears?

This book is the second in this series, but can be read as a stand alone book. A Father’s Vow is the first book to read if you want to read them in order. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but the opinions in this review are my own.

I am a sucker for a handsome fireman, but when you add a baby into the mix, I am a complete goner. So, in my opinion, Annie had no chance. This is one of those books that you pick up when you need a mental boost. It takes you to a charming small town where everyone knows everyone and where the happily ever after is just as delicious as a sugar-coated treat from the bakery.

The 4th of July festivities lined up perfectly with the excitement of my favorite holiday, which is coming up in a few days. Seeing both Josh and Annie get out of their heads for a moment was great. They are a couple that your heart can’t help but love, and when you pair them with the precious little Finn, then that makes the story all the more heartwarming. The main conflicts aren’t that deep, and there was even a twist that I wasn’t expecting, which is always a plus. I finished this adorable story with a smile on my face and a craving for something sweet, which makes the additional recipe the cherry on top of a wonderful story.

*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.

She has done a wonderful job with making Annie and Josh realistic. I loved in getting to know them so much! They were fun, loveable and charismatic.

I really felt at home with the small town feel because I grew up in a small town. Love them.
Surprises comes in lots of ways and this was definitely a big surprise for Josh!! He's such an awesome character.
I laughed at some places in this book because it was just such a fun story to read!

When Josh's brother and his wife are killed in an accident, Josh becomes dad to their son. The only problem is that the will states he must marry within 3 months of taking custody of Finn. Being that he has never found "the one", he is overwhelmed by this demand.

Annie is trying so hard to keep her bakery up and running despite things continually going missing or getting broken. After pledging funds to an organization that helped her many years ago, she feels helpless to complete her pledge due to a broken oven and a fire marshall that nitpicks everything.

Can Josh and Annie figure out a way to help each other, or are they both doomed to fail?

I love Annie and Josh's story and you will too! I highly recommend this story to those who love Christian fiction with a side of sweet rolls!

Another heartwarming, romantic tension filled, and poetically written novel from Chris Maday Schmidt! I loved the themes of forgiveness, adoption, and redemption woven throughout this perfect summer read. This book was also a feast for the senses, with the descriptions of mouthwatering treats and cozy small town of Sweetwater. I loved reading about the adorable cast of characters from Josh to Finn, to Annie and Lacey, and another look at Josie, Emerson, and Jack from the previous book. The mild suspense element kept me turning the pages as I wondered how Josh would be able to keep custody of Finn and how Annie would solve her bakery woes. All in all, a perfect summer read for the fourth of July (or for Canadians like me, Canada Day)!

Chris Maday Schmidt writes a story full of heart. The fire chief, Josh Rogers, is given custody of his late foster brother’s baby, Finn. After Josh thinks he has adopted Finn, he is told there is a stipulation. He must marry in 12 Weeks or give up the child. Annie Greene runs the local bakery and catering business. She is in the process of expanding to add a cafe and needs to be finished by Labor Day. Annie pitches the idea of Josh finishing her cafe and she in turn will find him a wife. What happens when two people must come to terms with there own insecurities?

I’m coming to enjoy books by author Chris Maday Schmidt. She writes about true to life characters who are living life, with all its ups and downs.

I really liked Chief Josh Rogers. He apparently changed so much by agreeing to care for his little nephew, Finn. Who, by the way, is adorable. But the kicker is he has to find a wife. In 3 months. And Annie has offered to help. They had me laughing and yet wanting to shake sense into them.

If you enjoy contemporary fiction you must read The Fire Chief’s Surprise. It even comes with a town legend and a surprise twist that I definitely didn’t see coming. I highly recommend it!
