Elite Hockey #3

The Alternate Captain

Rate this book
No feelings. Nothing. It’s as if I’m dead inside.

Johnny Koenig can’t recall the last time he experienced any emotion other than the intense pride he has for his team. The team admires, respects, and relies on him as their captain. But outside of hockey, Johnny is desperate to feel something more. And he thinks he’s found it when he meets Kelly online.
She’s smart and funny. She makes him come alive. And he thinks he’s starting to like this girl … until she ghosts him.
There one minute and gone the next; it’s like their three-month conversation never happened.

… this is an alternate version of Johnny I don’t know.

Kelly Betts hates hockey. All she wants to do is focus on music, a talent she’s put all her effort into since she was a child. When she’s invited to an audition for a prestigious music college, she jumps at the chance, even if it means staying with her brother on his side of the city--the same brother who’s been injured too many times for Kelly’s liking thanks to his career in hockey.
But he begs her to attend the playoff quarterfinals, she reluctantly drags herself through the doors of the rink, but the excitement of the game doesn’t last when he takes a hit that has her bolting for the exit, but not before she comes face to face with an eight-foot poster of the guy she’s been talking to online. Except, it can’t actually be him, can it?

Can Kelly help Johnny find himself when everything seems against them?

WOW, I didn't expect that.
No, not the fact that I loved the book, that's no surprise 🤣 But I didn't expect Johnny this way. I can't say how I thought he would be, but not that.
He is so very sensitive. He is broken. He is so vulnerable. And has low self-confidence and a lot of self-doubt 😔
It's no secret that his (and Vicky's) dad is an 🍑🕳️. A HUUUUUGE one! That's already said in book 2 (Vick and Liam's story). Their mother, I'm not completely sure, but she isn't what you would love to have as a mother either... But the dad 😱 How he treats Johnny. And how he treated him as a child/teen... I'm still not over it yet. And after his dad treated/treats him like he is a loser because he never made it into the NHL, Sarah (Johnny's ex) came next. God, I hate her, sooooo much. It's a tough bet who gets the first place, she or his dad...

In Kelly's life, there is just one person to get this "prize". And yes, it's HER ex 😎 Why do they always have such crazy exes? 🤣
I loved Kelly. She is a wonderful person. Yes, she is young but she knows what she wants.
And she really is perfect for Johnny. She supports him in everything. She doesn't shrug when Johnny tells her about his problem. I'm not sure everyone would have reacted like her 🩷

But there is this huge problem. Mike 'Bettsy' Betts. Her brother. His best friend and teammate. He will break the legs of everyone who gets near Kelly 🙈

Even though this isn't a series with a cliffhanger, waiting for the next book is k!ll!ng me... I need Bettsy's book 😎 And I hope his book won't be the last one, there are so many other players on the team 😉

If you like hockey, his series is a must-read. It contains a lot of playtime! I don't know anything about hockey, but I know Alys is a huge fan, so what she writes has to be correct 😁

I was lucky enough to beta read this book for Alys and let me tell you, you’re about to see a completely different side to Johnny than you’ve seen before. The spice in this book is amazing and the way he opens up and is vulnerable with Kelly is so heartwarming and like I said we really get to see a completely different side to Johnny than the bossy captain. Such a great read and I think it could be my fave from the series.

I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.

Omg I didn’t want to finish reading Johnny’s and Kelly’s story it had me engrossed.

I love that this gave a true perspective of the effects of mental abuse and from a males point of view.
Sarah sounded like a complete head case. It was great when the previous book (The Tape Job) intertwined in places and you got to see from a different point of view.

I’m extremely grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to follow this series from the start and I hope that many more people will follow along too.

“Sometimes life does that. When you think it’s the worst news in the world, it’s actually setting you on the path that’s meant for you.”

Kelly has only one thing in her mind, her music. She’s looking forward to finally entering the prestigious college she’s got a chance to audition for, but that means staying with her brother, who’s a part of a hockey team, which is something she hates. And when she notices Johnny there, she cannot believe it is the same guy she’s been talking to online.

Johnny is a cold hearted guy. He doesn’t take anything lightly, the hockey team he’s captain of, his friends and family. But honestly, he’s just ready to feel something, and he thinks he’s finally got it with Kelly, the girl she met online, until she ghosts him. What will need to happen for both of them to end together if they have everything against their relationship?

I’m always so excited to read a book that is technically a standalone, but part of a series, because you get to meet new people, a new story, but also re-enter a world you already love!

I’ve read the two previous books of this series, and being able to finally read Johnny’s story was a relief 😂. I've been so curious about him and Kelly’s secrets for a while now. Half of this story I was so nervous for Bettsy to know the truth lol, but mostly I was so invested in knowing how our main characters felt, how they discovered themselves and how their relationship evolved, they were real and that’s what I like the most about this book.

Honestly guys, if you have read previous books by Alys, you cannot miss this one. I've always enjoyed her writing and I feel like it just gets better each time. If you haven’t read previous books, this is definitely a good one to start! I love how Alys provides us with so many little details, and the hockey scenes are so cool to read too!

Thank you so much Alys for giving me the opportunity to read this with an ARC, I loved it and cannot wait to see what’s coming next. 💖

The Alternate Captain is out today! 🩵 Available in KU and paperback. 😏

If you read The Import Slot & The Tape Job a lot of Johnnys interactions may not of made sense….I know I found myself asking “why did he do this or that” a lot even though he was a secondary character in both books…well all of my questions have been answered now….it all makes perfect sense

Johnny & Kelly both have a messy past
Johnnys father was a piece of work…in his eyes Johnny was never & never would be good enough….the mental & emotional damage he did to his son says more about him as a parent than Johnny as a person….then you have Johnnys ex, Sarah….just another toxic person in his life…she lied, manipulated & tore him down…between the two it has taken Johnny years to get semi back on track…
Kelly had an ex, Darren, that found all the right times to be a thorn in her side….that guy was a piece of work but Kelly didn’t let it slow her down much
Kelly & Johnny meeting may be considered fate…I loved it…they got a chance to get to know each other before they both found out who they truly were…oh did I forget to mention Johnny plays hockey with Kelly’s brother Mike Bettsy??? That’s the center focus of the story….will they or won’t they & if they do will they tell the brother & risk broken legs???

Overall I love this book….Ive always been a hockey girlie though….throw in a love story & a little drama & you have the trifecta
I am ready for the next one…there are a ton of players left but only a few that we’ve already met…I need to see how all of their stories play out

I'm very happy I read Johnny's story because, although his attitude in The Tape Job wasn't particularly endearing, this book provides a clear explanation of it. Despite his personal struggles, he still is very loving and caring. Johnny's mental health and other private things were expertly written by Alys, in my opinion. More males need to understand that it's acceptable to not feel okay. Frankly, Kelly was the most kind and responsible 19-year-old I've ever met. She was passionate about music, which I adored. She was so caring, kind, and patient with Johnny.

Thank you to Alys J. Clarke for sending me a copy of this arc in exchange for an honest review

Wow, you know a book is good when you read it in a few hours. I couldn’t put this down! Loved the first two in this series but the third is definitely my favourite so far 😃. It was great to learn more about Johnny and although there are some hard hitting topics covered in this book they are dealt with really well. I really like how this book interlinked with The Tape Job. Tropes include teammates sister, age gap, secret romance and fake dating. The spice is definitely spicing in this book 🥵. A definite 5 🌟 read for me. Bring on book four 🙌🏻 #justiceforbetsy!

Absolutely loved! I was so excited to get my hands on book 3 and it did not disappoint! I loved seeing this other side of Captain Johnny Koenig. Through the other books we’ve seen tough, hardworking Johnny and not soft, sweet, open Johnny. I loved Kelly. She brought out the best of him and was a character herself. She’s young, but tough and can stick up for herself and friends. She’s feisty and playful and made her a wonderful character to get to know through the pages.

Even though this is book 3, it can be read as a standalone (but why would you). The plot was fast paced, but slower when needed for the romance and other parts and it worked. It was a great mix of drama, romance, and hockey. I couldn’t stop reading (but I had to……stupid work).

If you love hockey, age-gap, brother’s best friend/little sister, and secret romance tropes, this book is for you.

Thank you the author for providing me with an ARC! This is my honest and voluntary review

Slow burn
Brothers best friend
Age gap
Hockey romance
Couldn't get into for the first 60% properly then boom I was into it. Johnny and Kelly are perfect for each other despite the age gap she helps him heal, though I feel the storyline with the ex was a bit unfinished

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book!

I should’ve expected it from the other two books but Alys has done it again.

I fell even more in love with the characters (and now I’m even for excited for the 4th and final book in this series)

I particularly enjoyed learning about Johnny in a way that we haven’t necessarily learnt about before and it adds so much more to his character and everything is handled and written about so well.

All the books are so perfectly connected - this is a must read series as said before for all the hockey girlies but also those who love a good, spicy romance.

Johnny’s story is finally here!

it left me emotional, it left me wanting to give him so much love and left me wanting to have a sexual encounter with the team’s captain!

I got to see a true perspective of the effects of psychological/emotional abuse from a male’s point of view. I love how this book links in with the Tape Job (book two).

Kelly is so supportive of Johnny and doesn’t flinch when he tells her about his problems.

JOHNNY HAS A PIERCED 🐓

spice rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Tropes:
⛸️ Ice Hockey
🩷 secret romance/fake dating
🏒 team mate’s sister

With my hand on my heart, I have been following this series from the very beginning. I’ve read all three books, I didn’t want the Johnny and Kelly story to end. I have fallen in love with every character. I can’t wait to see what is in line for Mike “Bettsy” Betts, aka Kelly’s brother!

Oh my heart! Give me Johnny all day every day!

I knew Johnny's story was going to be the one in this series that would bring me to tears and I was 100% correct. My heart literally broke in two every time he had an interaction with his ex because it always meant pain for Kelly. Despite all of this, the chemistry between Johnny and Kelly was fantastic. While not so heavy on some of the spicier elements of their relationship, I really enjoyed the moments where Kelly was willing to help Johnny overcome his demons and work through them day by day. You know that they both burned for each other but it gave their moments an added layer that wasn't in the previous books- because it didn't necessarily need to be. I think that with all they had working against them- Kelly being so young, Kelly being Bettsy's sister, Johnny's ex and all of the damage that she did to him, it was really nice to see them battle these problems out together. Certainly made the moments they were able to be that much more thrilling and delicious. Throw in the hilarious situations these two find themselves in trying to hide this budding relationship from the world, and you have one laugh out loud, gut punching story.

There was something just so special about both of these characters- both coming from a place of hurt, I think it was really fun to see them both struggle with the damage that their previous relationships have caused them but yet still be so open to wanting and trying for more. Johnny certainly had the most to overcome in this situation, having been told for so long he wasn't worth anything all while wrestling for his feelings for his teammate's sister. I also enjoyed how Kelly was no nonsense- she knew Johnny had some things he needed to work out, but she wasn't going to wait around for him if he really and truly didn't want a relationship. She still had herself to protect and I really liked that she stood her ground with Johnny in terms of her own feelings.

What I really loved about this story was the parallels between The Import Slot and The Tape Job, especially The Tape Job, where it is hinted at that Johnny is spiraling but no one really knows and understands why. I love that we get to see his side of the situation instead of the small bits that we saw in The Tape Job and get to experience everything as it is happening simultaneously to the other two stories. I for one personally can't wait to go back and tandem read these three stories together. Throw in Bettsy's story in the end and I'm not sure what I am going to do with myself after all of this is done. I for one can't wait to see more of these two in the next book.

ARC Review

When Johnny Koenig spends three months speaking online to Kelly Betts, without knowing who she is, and then she ghosts him, he doesn’t know what went wrong. Johnny thought they had a good thing but when it turns out Kelly is his teammate and best friend Mike’s little sister, it suddenly makes sense but when tension between the two becomes unbearable, will they give in to their feelings?

Johnny and Kelly are so well suited, even with the age gap and Kelly being only 18, she knows what she wants and they make a great couple. Johnny is sensitive and so broken by his past relationship that he is terrified that the conversations he has laid himself bare in with Kelly previously will be shared with the world but Kelly shows time and time again she will be his cheerleader and secret keeper and will be there whenever and however he needs her.

The way Johnny shows his love and care for Kelly throughout the book is really lovely and the support they give each other, especially with both their ex’s again demonstrates how good they are for each other. It would have been easy for both to walk away with Johnny’s status and Kelly’s brother being one of Johnny’s best friends but I’m glad they found their way to be together.

I enjoyed this book being set across the same timeline as The Tape Job and it was good to see various parts from Johnny’s POV as The Tape Job did leave a few questions unanswered. I was a little disappointed with the ending of this book, I would have liked the epilogue to be more focused on Johnny and Kelly but it was a good book overall. I did prefer the first two books but I think that is a down to me connecting more with those characters and their storylines.

The found family is strong in this series and I like that they are all supportive of each other, especially when we see Johnny’s parents and Kelly’s ex-boyfriend and understand more about why they are the way they are. The author is clearly a huge hockey fan, this comes through in the book and it is nice to see British Ice Hockey represented as it is in this series.

Elite Hockey Series Book 3

I have honestly been staring at the screen for far too long trying to put into words how this book made me feel, and the answer is everything! To the point I was dreaming about Johnny and Kelly!

This captivating story follows team captain Johnny, his icy persona is in full swing with the pressures of the hockey season he finds solace in an app and meets Kelly, someone he is slowly opening up to that is until she ghosts him. Without giving too much away they face many obstacles along the way to their Happily Ever After!

Johnny faces many of his own struggles which some of we have seen glimpses in both The Import Slot and The Tape Job, it is refreshing to see a MMC that isn’t a cocky hockey player and that he is full of emotions and is trying, but his demons try to get the better of him, and that its okay to not be okay all the time, I myself have similar struggles and find it difficult to express my emotions just like Johnny, and Kelly is just the absolute sweetest most perfect girl for Johnny, she helps him through all his struggles.

This book also bought the return of all your favourite characters as well as some amazing newcomers, and I think it is safe to say that we all have a Tom in our lives, mines called Harry!

I can seriously talk about this book and the entire series if I’m being honest all day and not get bored, Alys is a genius! And forever fuels my British Hockey needs! Thank you so much Alys for sending me this ARC! I cannot wait for what is comes next in this series #justiceforbettsy

I would HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who wants to feel a rollercoaster of emotions at the same time, for fans of British Hockey Romance, Age Gap, Best Friends Sister, Found Family, and a dash of Spicy Scenes.

Alys J Clarke has done it again! Oh my goodness, even though it took me a while to get through this book due to being on holiday, I still had a hard time putting it down

I am a huge fan of Alys & her work, I loved both The Import Slot & The Tape Job , I have absolutely loved reading The Alternate Captain & I am beyond excited for Book 4 of this series! I seriously hope that Book 4 won’t be the end of this series because I am enjoying it way too much!

I would love to say that Johnny is my new book boyfriend, but my heart is still with the twins (Liam & Ryan) however, this book did give me a whole new perspective of Johnny. It was so lovely to meet Kelly & see this new side to Bettsy, he truly is a great big brother & deserves the world!

This book has a decent amount of spice, I’d rate it a level 4 on the spice chart. It’s definitely some kinky spice!
There is also ALOT of game play in the book, which personally as a wannabe Ice hockey fan .. I find incredibly interesting & fun to read.

I highly recommend reading this book, personally I rate it a 5 star read! However, it may be helpful to read The Import slot & The Tape job before doing so. Even though these books can be read as stand-alone’s, reading the series in order will give you a better understanding of the storyline.

There are some triggers warnings that should be read before diving into the book. There are no graphic details of these triggers, but do remember that your mental health matters!

Be sure to preorder your copy of The Alternate Captain on Amazon & to mark your calendars for the release date which is Tomorrow! (September 30th)

This is book 3 of the Elite Hockey series which follows Johnny and Kelly. I loved this version of the brother’s teammate trope, because they met on their own first. These two meeting online made their relationship start out so pure. They show a genuine connection, but I understand when Kelly gets upset about the alternate personalities coming from Johnny. She just wants to understand who the real man is.
I adored how even though Johnny is the captain and finishing his masters degree, he is devoted to encouraging and seeing Kelly perform. Kelly is a very mature and open minded woman to help Johnny with his issues. She deserves all the love and happiness after the events of her life before Johnny.
My problem with the book is that is was not clear to me in the beginning and a few times through, where this book took place in the overall timeframe. The first book had a easy continuation with the second, yet the third book appeared to start around the same timeframe as the ending of the first book and run parallel to the second from what I could tell. There were chapter that you could recognize from the other books, just from a different perspective.
Additionally there was a huge build up to Betts reaction about their relationship and I felt as though it was just swept under the rug. He made multiple comments about no one saying his sister throughout the book but then at the very end all he did was shrug when he found out…

I cannot believe I got the opportunityti ARC for this book, and I have to say, it surpassed my expectations. I found this book to be even more captivating than the first two in the series.

What really stood out to me was the portrayal of Jonny's inner struggles. The author did an incredible job of depicting his deep-seated self-consciousness and low self-esteem in a very raw and relatable way. The exploration of men's mental health was handled with a beautiful sensitivity that resonated with me deeply.

Kelly, the female lead, was an absolute standout character in my eyes. Her unwavering love and support for Jonny, as well as her proactive efforts to help him overcome his personal challenges, truly touched my heart. It's rare to see such a well-developed and caring partner in literature.

While I would have enjoyed a bit more intensity in certain aspects of the story, the compelling storyline itself was enough to keep me thoroughly engrossed. Overall, this book left a lasting impression on me, and I'm eager to recommend it to others.

Hopefully we get to have a book about Mike (Bettsy)😍

I received an ARC copy of The Alternate Captain and Wow!! Just wow, Alys has done it again ❤️

This is by far one of the easiest 5⭐️ I’ve given

The Alternate Captain follows Johnny and Kelly
I definitely saw Johnny in a completely different way in this book and my heart broke for him, he’s traumatised from his past relationship, his self confidence is broken, constantly second guessing himself and never feeling ‘good enough’ or worthy of love…. (I hate his ex Sarah with a passion 😡)

Kelly is just everything that Johnny needed, she’s understanding, and patient, even though their relationship started off a little rocky they are just perfect for each other ❤️

I can’t not mention Tom, Kelly’s best friend, I absolutely loved him in this and I hope we might get to see more of him in the future 🤞🏻🙏🏻
And Bettsy, Kelly’s big brother also Johnny’s best friend/team mate, we saw so much more of him in this, the banter he has with everyone has me kicking my feet (he’s my fave 🥰)
I can’t wait for his book ❤️❤️❤️
I will be rereading this very soon as a tandem read with The Tape Job (book 2) as they are both happening at the same time

Although I have previously connected with the author, this review is 100% my own opinion!

Book content warnings of explicit sexual content, drug misuse, manipulation, injury detail, pregnancy, age gap. Please check the trigger warnings in case I have missed any.

It has been a couple of weeks since I finished The Alternate Captain so my review won’t be as detailed (life has been busy), but I really enjoyed this book and it’s definitely my favourite so far in the series! ☺️

The Alternate Captain is excellently written and I couldn’t put it down - I just kept turning the pages to see what would happen next. I liked the shorter chapters as it meant I could read a chapter or two at night, even after a busy day!

I really liked Kelly as a character and felt she was mature for her age. I could relate a lot to her as I played the piano and flute growing up, so I really enjoyed following her along with her music career and studies. She was really passionate about playing the cello and I found this really refreshing to read about. Kelly really cared about her friends and I could feel the connection between her and Johnny - I don’t usually like age gap romances but I did feel both Kelly and Johnny were mature and considerate of each other.

I did like Johnny as a character and appreciated seeing his backstory, especially where this fitted in with the timeline of the previous books. Johnny really cared about Kelly, Vicky and his teammates and I felt he was a good Captain to the team. I loved the little acts of kindness he did for Kelly, such as sending her roses made from sheet music 🥲

I felt that there was good communication between the characters, which was refreshing and showed maturity.

I did find the plot a little slower at times but I felt that I built up a good connection with Johnny and Kelly and really got to know them as characters, including the things they struggled with personally. This book was spicy but it wasn’t so spicy that I couldn’t continue with it. I also felt that the ending was quite abrupt, but I understand that it is to fit in line with The Tape Job. I did find sometimes that things happened a little conveniently for the plot but this didn’t take away too much from the book. I do think I would benefit from doing a tandem read of the books as I definitely missed some things!

I loved the book box for The Alternate Captain, especially the rose made from sheet music ☺️

Overall, I really enjoyed The Alternate Captain and it was my favourite book so far in the series. Although I don’t usually like age gap romances, I felt Johnny and Kelly were mature for their ages and considerate of each other. I’m looking forward to Bettsy’s book and other books by Alys in the future! ☺️

This book put my heart through the wringer and it was everything I wanted it to be.

I have been waiting for this book ever since I fell in love with Johnny while reading The Import Slot. (Alys’s first book, which I read in January).

My heart just broke for Johnny 💔

It is so nice to see a MMC that is not a cocky ice hockey player. Johnny has so many struggles. All of which are dealt with in a sensitive manner.

Alys has written Kelly to be the perfect girl for Johnny. I just love her.

And while this was not Bettsy’s story (his is next) I loved seeing how he developed and the friendship between him and Johnny. #justiceforBettsy

I highly recommend this book. If you love brother’s best friend with a bit of fake dating thrown in this is the book for you.

While this book can be read as a stand alone I think the overall experience will be improved if you read The Import Slot and The Tape Job.

Some of my favourite lines from the book

🏒 I can’t describe how much I hate hockey.

🏒 “Bettsy is hilarious,”

🏒 karma is a queen, not a bitch.”

🏒 ‘You’re beautiful,’ not ‘you look beautiful,’ or ‘your dress is beautiful.’

🏒 Because you’re special, Johnny. And I think you should remember that.”

Loved this just as much as the others in the series. We get to see a completely different side to Johnny and boy did I love it! Loves how Kelly's character really drew out his vulnerabilities and insecurities and they worked together to help him. It has me hooked by chapter 2 i had this read in less than a day i couldnt put it down. I also really enjoyed the overlap of the two books that was in the same time line as The Import Slot till chapter 10 I really liked that. It took me a while to get used to Betsy being called Mike though! Really enjoyed the hockey chat in this book too I feel it was more heavy on the hockey content than the spicy stuff till about half way in which suits the captancy role Johnny has to a T. Overall a solid 5/5 for me. Can't wait for betsys book now! A must read for any hockey fan especially EIHL fans. Oh and the ending eughhhhh it was so perfect

Johnny Koenig... my newest addiction, and I don't want a cure!

This book is an absolute work of art and was one of the easiest 5 stars I've given. I laughed, screamed, and cried, but most of all, I loved every second of reading this book.

As book 3 in the Elite Hockey Series, we've seen Johnny and heard him numerous times, but this book lets us see that he has more layers than an onion.... he may even make you cry like one,
We get to see who Johnny really is under the captain role, when he doesn't have to be a brother or anyone other than himself.

I urge any hockey romance lovers to dive into this series, and most definitely, this book, you won't be disappointed.

Now I'm booking a first class ticket to their world. Where the men have real feelings, the women support one another, and their friendships will wrap you in the cosiest blanket.

“I always thought I was immune to hockey players in fancy suits, but Johnny is, apparently, an exception to the rule.”

Thank you so much Alys J Clarke for sending me the ARC of this!

This one was without a doubt my favourite of the series. Also 100% the spiciest.

Even with the age gap, both Johnny and Kelly were on the same level pretty much the whole time. I love how Johnny leveled out when Kelly was around, no longer angry and able to eventually talk through his emotions.

Kelly was a sweetie, I loved her from the get go. I loved how she kept Johnny grounded in the moment. And their spice was just chefs kiss.

Bettsy appears so much in this book and it’s great, I loved every second he was on page. And his reaction to finding out his best friend and Kelly are together was perfect. Honestly big up Bettsy.

This is the third book in the series. And Oh my how I have waited for Johnny’s book and it does not disappoint.

Throughout the two first books i have been kinda annoyed with Johnny’s character, but in this book everything now makes sense. I love the way he is so so sweet with Kelly. Their flirting and texting is just amazing and you can really feel them through the writing.
I love how this series has a lot of hockey in the actual story and does skip it to go on. Their adulttime is tender, spicy, exploratory and very hot. I am here for it all and I can’t wait for the next one.

Tropes in this book:
Fake Dating
Best friends sister
Slow burn
Secret relationship
Agegap (19-27)
British icehockey
HEA

This is the story I’ve been waiting for and it’s perfect. When Johnny was first introduced in the beginning of the series, there was something about him that just pulled on my heartstrings. Intensely deep and mysterious, he’s also caring, sensitive, protective, and has a heart of gold. I had to know more. His story with Kelly, his team, and the pain he feels regarding his father, makes him come alive. This author is a brilliant storyteller. It’s not your typical age-gap, sister of a teammate, hockey romance. It’s very hot, and I love that, but it’s the story of two people struggling to be seen, overcoming so much, and bravely opening their hearts up to a myriad of wonderful possibilities. It’s life, and it’s beautiful.

This story was everything and then some. I did not want Johnny's story to end. I've been waiting for Johnny's story since the beginning and I am so glad to have finally been a part of it. However, this one is a tear-jerker. My heart broke into a million pieces for Johnny and I wanted to be able to fix everything for him.
I love that he and Kelly found each other in the midst of chaos. Both having dealing with heartache and past trauma they knew a good thing when they saw it, and they weren't about to let it go.

This book has all the best tropes sports romance (Hockey), brothers best friend/younger sister, secret romance, age-gap and more. And of course they get their HEA!

Thanks for the early read!

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2.5 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to beta read this book and when I tell you this series just goes from strength to strength!
We see a real raw and emotional connection between Johnny and the FMC who helps him overcome some very difficult obstacles and trauma. I feel this was handled so beautifully within the book and really felt like what true anxiety attacks can feel like (for one example).
The spice scenes in this book are hot hot hot! And I always love that Alys’ books feel so ‘real’ ie conversations you would have with a partner. Or in the case of the hockey - true hockey insights.

I have read the 2 previous books which have been enjoyable reads but i have to say so far this has been my favourite one. Alys J.Clarkes writing just gets better and better including the spice. There were moments where i had to make sure no one was reading over my shoulder LOL.

I do not want to put any spoilers as this is not fair to readers who do wish to read this book, but you will not be disappointed. I could not put this book down so this is highly recommended, so get out there and order. if you have not read any of the series and want to treat yourselves then please order all three.

This is book 3 of the Elite Hockey series books. This book is about Johnny Koeing, The captain of the hockey team. Alys has not named the hockey team so that the reader can imagine it is the team they support. I love this idea, it's so original. I gave this book a 5 star rating and a 3 star spice rating. This is now my new favourite out of the 3 books that have been released and I can not wait for Bettsy book next year.
Johnny is captain of the hockey team. He starts talking to a girl (Kelly) online and after 3 months she ghosts him and deletes the app. Then at one of the hockey matches she goes to support her brother Mike. she ends up seeing posters of the guy she was messaging for the 3 months, Kelly thinks she has been catfished. This story is all about Johnny and Kelly. I love how you can feel the emotion and raw anger. Kelly becomes Johnny Anchor, helps him keep calm and brings him back to the moment. Helps him through some mental abuse he has in the past and helps him to get control of his emotions.
Over all i read this book in 3 days. I could not put it down. I went through all the emotions with Johnny and Kelly. I would re-read this book along with the tape job and do a tandem read as they are both set at the same time. This would be a more emotional read. I can not wait for Bettsys story #justiceforBettsy
