The Other Couple

It was supposed to be the perfect weekend. Just you, me… and my chance at revenge. Until they arrived…

The fire crackles gently in the grate as my partner Finn fills my glass with red wine. Looking into his sparkling blue eyes, I feel a tug on my heart. Finn is my boss, and no one can know how hard we’ve fallen for each other. We thought this lighthouse keeper’s cottage on the wild Irish coast would be the perfect secret getaway. Then there’s a knock at the door…

A rain-soaked couple tell us that they’ve booked the house for the weekend too. I look to Finn, but he steps aside to let them in. I stiffen. This trip isn’t just a chance for Finn and me to fall deeper in love. Nobody can know the real reason we’re here. My life is hanging by a thread. I have no choice but to welcome the couple with open arms, offer them a drink, and tell them we’ll have this all sorted out by the morning.

Finn doesn’t know the real me, but it seems I don’t know him either.

This other couple is here for a reason, and one of us won’t be leaving this place alive…

An absolutely gripping rollercoaster of a psychological thriller, packed with twist after twist.

After having read THE SNOW STORM by Triona Walsh last year, I was so excited to learn I had been approved for the ARC of her newest novel, THE OTHER COUPLE! The premise had me hooked immediately, with its promise of sinister secrets, twisty twists, and the chance for revenge. The story is centered around a couple, Finn and Alice, who are looking forward to a much-needed getaway in a remote lighthouse, only to find their weekend disrupted by the unexpected appearance of another mysterious pair, Mac and Viv. As tensions slowly build among our four MCs, it becomes crystal clear that each of them is harboring long-held secrets, adding layers of suspense and intrigue as the plot moves forward.

I love Triona Walsh’s writing style and her natural ability to slowly build the tension through her expertly paced narrative. The chapters alternate between differing perspectives, namely those of Alice and Vivienne, helping the reader get glimpses into their mindsets and memories. Doing this not only helps us better relate to our characters, but enhances the suspense because we are left wondering what is the truth and what is merely deception.

I loved the setting being in Ireland at an isolated lighthouse, the harsh weather and tumultuous sea becoming characters of their own, perfectly mirroring the inner turmoil and unpredictable behaviors of our two couples. As I read and grew closer to the final half of the book, I had a hard time hypothesizing how it all might end. There is more than one twist, which I love, and the final twist is mind-blowing. I honestly did not see it coming. By the conclusion, secrets are revealed, our many questions are answered, and the puzzle pieces perfectly fall into place. I can’t wait to read what Fiona Walsh has in store for us in her next book!!

I want to thank NetGalley, Triona Walsh, and Bookouture for gifting me the ARC of THE OTHER COUPLE! It was such a privilege to read this before publication. And I appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!

At a lighthouse B&B, Alice and Finn are about to begin their first getaway as a couple. Finn is the CEO of TobinTech; a man with a lot of money and influence. Alice is an analyst in his company, and quite a bit younger than him. The optics of their relationship wouldn’t look good in the era of men in power being with younger employees, so in Dublin, they have to keep their relationship secret. Finally, now they can be alone in a tiny town where nobody will know who they are.

Relaxing in front of the fire on their first evening of the trip, they hear banging at the door. “The Other Couple”, Mac and Vivienne, apparently booked the same spot for the night, and they have the receipts to prove it. It’s late, it’s storming, and they insist on sharing the place until the problem can be sorted the next morning. Vivienne is especially snobby and rude, but Alice and Finn let them stay in the guest room. This may have been a bad idea…

The other couple has reasons for being there that are revealed as the book goes along, and it’s a wild ride. The only thing none of them know is that Alice also has a motive for being there, which isn’t revealed until the very end. The big twist close to the end floored me. There were several big twists, but I’m talking the BIG twist. I predict it will shock most readers; it was never even close to my radar. There were more twists until the ending, and all were totally unseen by me - kudos to the author, who is new to me! This is a very fun page turner - 4.5 stars.

(Thank you to Bookouture for including me on this book’s tour! “The Other Couple” is slated to be released on October 28, 2024.)

It was supposed to be the perfect weekend. Just you, me… and my chance at revenge. Until they arrived…

This was one of those stories that was hard to get into and I had trouble connecting with any of the characters. Alice, 25, and Finn, 42, are a couple. They book a lighthouse keeper’s cottage on the wild Irish coast hoping to have the secret getaway but it won't be long before another couple appears who claim they have also booking for the cottage...

Alice and Finn were supposed to be in love but I didn't get why their romance was forbidden and they had to secretly sneak around. One of them was married? Him being the boss..so what? Their age difference..middle aged men with 10+ year younger woman seem to be a norm these days.
Vivienne and Mac, "The Other Couple", were also strange characters who seemed to plan something but what exactly?

It got annoying the way author constantly hinted that there were secrets and someone was planning something but reader was kept in the dark. There's that book description "my change at revenge". Hm, revenge? Everything was so vague. TBH at some point it got irritating and frustrating. You'd expect something to happen but the story just dragged on. Naturally everything will be revealed at some point but it will happen too late and to get there was too slow. I expected more gripping and thrilling story!

This was an engaging read with great twists, but it definitely caused me to suspend my disbelief. The story centers on Alice and Finn, who rent an Airbnb type lighthouse in a secluded area, only to be joined by another couple who said there had been confusion with the booking and they were confirmed as well. It becomes quickly clear that all 4 of these characters have pretty big secrets that they are hiding.

None of these characters were all that likable but that doesn’t really bother me. It was the silly decisions they made that got to me, at times. I thought there were surprising twists throughout, but much of them felt unbelievable. Even the reasons for characters making life-changing decisions sometimes seems like a bit of a stretch. This all being said, the twists were interesting and I enjoyed being surprised. The end of the book ties up loose ends but is a little too clean to be realistic.

Overall, it’s a tense story that is fun to read as long as you are able to suspend disbelief. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I definitely tried to love this but after 11 days decided ultimately to DNF the book.

I couldn’t get into it and had trouble connecting with the story, characters and felt like this was the slowest burn ever.

I honestly struggled to finish The Other Couple. After a month and a half os trying to get through it, I almost DNF'd. The premise sounded so promising, and I was ready for a page-turning thriller—but personally, it just didn’t deliver. The first half kept hinting that each character had secrets, yet they were too vague and the reveals were too sparse to keep me hooked. It felt like I was waiting and waiting for something big to happen, but it kind of just dragged on.

The plot twists were predictable, with some even feeling downright unbelievable. By the time the story picked up near the end, I’d already lost the sense of urgency I usually love in thrillers. Even the ending felt rushed, like everything was crammed in at the last minute.

Not my cup of tea, but for readers who enjoy a slower-burn mystery with subtle hints of suspense rather than high-stakes action, it might be a better fit.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing a copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

DNF @ 54%

Life’s too short to force myself to finish this book. It’s so boring. I requested it cause the premise sounded really good but I felt as though it dragged on so much and it was not thrilling at all. The characters had so much potential!!!! But i feel like they weren’t explored as much as they could have been. I got halfway and I didn’t feel any urgency to pick it up and continue. And halfway through for thrillers is kinda where it starts picking up.

Thanks NetGalley for the eARC!

The Other Couple is a hooking, sleek and a creative read.
Alice and Finn go away together in secret to a guest lighthouse.
As Finn is her boss, according to company policy there’s to be no relationships internally.
As they settle in, there’s a knock at the door.
Vivienne and Mac, say they have also booked the accommodation.
As both couples won’t budge, they decide to contact the owner.
But as the hours tick by, all is not as it seems….
Secrets and deception are high on the agenda.
Who is lying…..
Who is here for revenge….
Then the truth comes out……
No one is safe.
Triona has cleverly penned a twisty tale.
I must say I was quite impressed with all the deceit and misinformation.
A great read for thriller fans.

A perfect isolated setting for this gripping read that is full of unexpected twists and turns! I love it when a book surprises me and this one certainly did!
It was well paced enough to keep me intrigued and flipping the pages. It is tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat but you do need to be able to suspend belief at times. I am always happy to do that but it's not always the same for everyone.
I've not read this author previously but I'll certainly be on the look out for more of her books to add to my tbr!

Triona Walsh is a new to me author so before going into this book I had no idea whether this would be my cup of tea. However I was seeing a few of my friends on Goodreads reading and enjoying it, so I though I would give it a go. And I am so glad I did!
The story jumps right in from the start and the tension doesn't let up until the very end.
I was immediately intrigued and invested in the plot and the short snappy chapters had me flying through the book.
I liked the characters and the setting really did add to the atmosphere for me.
The only slight problem I had was I didn't enjoy the ending. It felt like all the build from the book hit a brick wall and it was resolved very neatly at the end. This did unfortunately leave me feeling ever so slightly disappointed. There were also no surprises to me in the plot, which did feel predictable to me.
However that didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book as a whole. It was such a fun, fast paced enjoyable thriller that you could easily read in one sitting and I had a great time reading it.
If you like Frieda McFadden books then you might like this one.

I loved this book so much. I read thrillers after so long and this one didn't disappoint. Loved the isolated setting of this book. Perfect chilly vibes for a thriller. I liked the writing style, of the author. How she maintained the tone of the story while flipping the perspectives is commendable. And the twist? I failed to predict it as usual. It was a page turner surely, the story, the secrets unfolded so amazingly I was not able to put it down and flipped through pages.

I'm so sorry. I was debating whether I should write a review or just sit this one out because I don't have many good things to say! First of all, the writing was slightly cringe, at least for me. The amount of times someone "cried out" simple words in this book is insane. Also, MAYBE. Why did they say "maybe" in every other sentence? I'm so sorry because I really wanted to like it because of how intriguing the storyline sounded but the writing alone was enough for me to just skim the pages, with the hope a great Plottwist would happen. Surprise; it did not. Anyways; not for me but maybe its for you! Keep in mind; tastes are different and whatever I dislike, may be your next favorite read!
I still want to thank NetGalley, the Publisher and the Author for making it possible for me to read "The other couple" by Triona Walsh as an early copy!

This book sounded right up my street and I’m so glad I got to read it. Really gives your mind a workout trying to figure out what might be going on and the connections between all of the characters. It keeps you guessing and the character depth is just as good as the pacing and suspense. Plus, I really enjoyed the Irish setting and the imagery was written so well that I could vividly picture the surroundings.

I do however have issues with the ending and the abruptness of the resolution with essentially all being worked out and forgiven within one page? The only way to describe it is that it just felt rushed and this was disappointing for me and not in keeping with the rest of the story. I felt like the story took me on such a ride throughout and was setting me up for a standoff between Finn and Alice when her secrets/plan were to be revealed but instead it was almost brushed to the side in favour of a swift resolution and happily ever after. This isn’t an overwhelming criticism, it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment I had reading the book, but it definitely could have added some and left me more satisfied

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book and give my honest review!

It wasn't a bad book at all. Maybe I wasn't in the mood, but even though the setting gave eerie vibes, I found the overall quite boring.
Don't misunderstand me, some plot twists weren't predictable, but it dragged on too much for me...

Even if the characters' psychology was good, I found myself impossible to warm up to Finn and Alice, and it's a problem because they're the principal relationship in the book.

I really wanted to like this book; the writing was great. So maybe this one wasn't for me, but Triona Walsh's other books will be!

I’ve never read a book by this author but will absolutely pick up another one! I adored this one from start to finish & only predicted one twist. The rest kept me guessing and I thoroughly enjoyed my time. As soon as I hit 30% I couldn’t put the book down!

There is a balance of different characters that work well with each other & I like the epilogue at the end as a little bonus.

Definitely would recommend & will be reading some more of this authors work soon

Alice and Finn plan a weekend away at a lighthouse, a chance to spend quality some time together away from prying eyes. Finn is a highly level executive, a CEO of TobinTech, wealthy but handsome but he has fallen for a younger woman that is his employee, this would not be well thought of by those in his company.

But the first evening they are there, a knock on the door shocks them, who can this be when no one knows where they are? This sets the scene for the story with the arriving couple stating n that they also have a booking for these same days and they are able to prove to Alice and Finn that this is true.

So now they have a dilemma, the telephone service is minimal, and Alice is desperate to contact the booking company to have this resolved, she wants her weekend back with her lover. But Alice also feels that there is something quite off about this couple Mark and Vivienne, and she may be right. As the hours progress, she starts to get a terrible feeling that there may be more to this, and that Finn may be involved in some way.
Everyone here has secrets and that makes this is a good mystery and I became quite involved in the story, quite predictable but still enjoyable. That is until the end, I have never read a more rushed ending that unfortunately did not cut it for me at all and I was quite disappointed. There was a lot of potential for this to finish on a high note but unfortunately the author seemed to miss this opportunity.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions expressed are my own.

I went into this book with an open mind, since it’s the first book I’ve read by this author. Initially , The Other Couple pulled me right in with Alice and Finn wanting to have a romantic getaway when they realized they were “double booked” with another couple, Vivienne and Mac.
I found myself spacing out towards the 30% mark once the initial shock wore off when the couples realized they were staying at the venue. None of the characters were particularly likable and it’s hard to care what is going to happen to them once you realize everyone has a secret.
The Other Couple overall was very fast paced and had various twists and turns where you thought you had the plot figured out and then another reveal would happen. I just didn’t get into this suspense read as much as I wanted and I was determined to finish the book. It’s unfortunate that you need to complete a novel for unanswered questions as opposed to finishing a book from sheer enjoyment.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing this book, with my honest review below.

The Other Couple is very much about couples, the main one, Alice and Finn, who take their May December romance to a thematic foggy lighthoused town and that of the mystery couple who interrupts their getaway, Mac and Vivienne.

Alice and Finn are our initial focus because their romance is one taking place illicitly as Finn is the CEO of the company Alice works for, in addition to being older than her. This couple individually has a ton of secrets, and figuring out Alice’s was especially the driver of the plot for me as Finn was just ick. Meanwhile Mac and Vivienne also have secrets, and naturally they’re connected to this couple. There were quite a few plot developments I didn’t see coming and a big twist upon twist at the end that is unexpected. My struggle here is that I love twists but the suspension of disbelief throughout the book just went too far for me not to see this as the type of book where a monkey could show up and start hula dancing randomly and it would check out. Entertaining for sure, but depending on your taste in thrillers, this will either be a wild ride or just a bit too much.

So, our characters are stupid. I mean seriously mind-numbingly stupid.

The age gap is weird because both members of our ‘romantic’ couple act like middle schoolers. But that’s okay because so does every other character in the book.

However, the book is a fast and entertaining beach read that won’t tax your brain. Just don’t expect too much.

3.5 ⭐️. The other couple was an entertaining and fast-paced mystery book. I loved the setting and thought the author did a fantastic job describing the lighthouse, the weather, and the surroundings. The characters piqued my curiosity, and with each chapter, I wanted to learn more about them. I particularly liked Alice as the main character; her intelligence is essential in mystery novels. The short chapters kept the pace brisk, and once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. The only downside for me was that part of the plot felt somewhat predictable. I found myself hoping for a different direction, but it unfolded as I expected.

This was my first book by Triona Walsh, and I would love to read more of her work.

What a ride! Finn and Alice find that they have been double booked on their weekend getaway. When Vivienne and Macdara turn up it sure puts a damper on their secret getaway. But everyone has their own agenda including Alice.
I breezed through the book in 5 hours. The writing style is so gripping. You get just enough clues to keep you hooked till the end. I would definitely recommend this to my friends.

This book was really good! The thriller was definitely there and it had me hooked! I would definitely recommend this book. The setting, the characters and the plot were really enjoyable. I kind of knew where the plot twist was going but I found it exciting either way because I just had an idea but then there was the twist! I came a little late with my review but life kind of got in the way because I couldn’t stop reading which is a very good sign in a thriller!
I'm rating this book a 4/5 stars, perfect for this fall vibes and it was a really good way to end this spooky season!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC for this book!

I never read anything before by the author.
At the beginning, I thought this book was based on a movie I already saw. But I was completely wrong and I had no idea where the story was going.

I was totally won over; we learn to know the characters on the first half of the book but the second half had me questioning everything and guessing where it was going and I couldn’t put it down.

I finished this is in a weekend and I would totally recommand this to a friend !

I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced and kept me interested throughout the whole plot. I thought it was a unique storyline and different from other psychological thrillers out there. The book was well written and I thought I had the twist figured out early on but I was wrong. I didn’t enjoy a lot of the characters except Mac, but mostly because they all seemed bitter and out for revenge, which was essentially important to the storyline. Overall, I liked the book and would read more by this author. Thank to you NetGalley and Bookoutore for this ARC!

This book was significantly longer than it had to be... it could have been a decent(ish) book but the plotlines just went off the rails at some point. Major twist was not great or well executed. Everything wrapped up a little too neatly in the end which is just not realistic given the storylines.

Alice Armstrong and her boyfriend Finn Tobin have booked a lighthouse-turned-Airbnb in Donegal for a romantic getaway. Hours from their home in Dublin, they can be a normal couple in love for the weekend. They can visit pubs, hold hands in public, and do everything they can’t do any other time. The CEO of TobinTech, Finn is Alice’s boss. Hiding their relationship is necessary to keeping it. The scandal it would create if it was revealed would tank the shares of the company Finn started and ruin him to boot. It’s no wonder the couple seems happy to finally be away and alone. But as Alice readies their bedroom on the first night, there’s a knock at the door. When Finn opens it, a couple steps inside and introduces themselves as Vivienne and Mac. They’ve booked the lighthouse too — for the same days — and they don’t intend to leave.

Alice is leery of them right from the start. Her suspicions grow when her phone goes missing, followed by Finn’s keys, and a hose on his scuba gear is slashed. But he doesn’t seem as alarmed by them as she is. In fact, she spies him chatting with their unexpected roommates in the kitchen the next morning. Something about his body language feels off. Does he know them? Either way, she has to get rid of the unwanted couple. Quickly. Alice has a plan for the weekend, one she’s had since she was a little girl. She needs to be alone with Finn to make it happen. But little does she know, the other couple has a plan, too. As a weekend of romance turns into one filled with lies, fake identities, and long-held secrets, Alice realizes the truth. However, is it too late? Did someone’s plan for the weekend include murder?

Full of twists, turns, and jaw-dropping shocks, “The Other Couple” by Tríona Walsh bubbles with suspense in the very first chapter and quickly builds to a boil before the novel is even halfway through. It’s a maddening roller coaster ride in the dark. It’s the kind of book that creates a lot of questions for the reader early on, then dangles the truth over the chapters like a carrot. Every time you think you’re getting within reach of it, a sudden twist jerks you in another direction — and away from that dang carrot. It’s a little aggravating and extremely riveting.

Through Alice’s interior monologue, it’s revealed she’s anything but a reliable narrator. Likable? Yes. Just not reliable. She has a plan for Finn and, although she doesn’t reveal any details (and neither will this review), it’s clear she has an ulterior motive. The same is true for Vivienne. She comes across as stern and rude when she deals with Alice and Finn, but her interior monologue reveals what she’s keeping hidden — or enough of it to keep you reading, that is. You won’t be able to read it fast enough.

The characters in “The Other Couple” are as much of a mystery as the story itself. They’re well-developed and seemingly rise off the pages to act out their parts in front of your eyes. Yet, they’re shrouded in fog like the truth is throughout most of the book. Although they are believable as characters, you question who they truly are, as well as their motives for the weekend. It’s very much a character-driven story with a plot so twisty that it feels more like loopy-de-loops.

I didn’t love “The Other Couple” in the first few chapters. It seemed slow-moving, and I couldn’t quite get hooked. But, as it turns out, the problem was me. Not the book. Once I got a bite of chocolate to lighten my mood and settled into the story, I couldn’t put it down. “The Other Couple” is a fast-moving, gripping story that keeps you in suspense until nearly the end. You’ll be left slack-jawed by the explosive conclusion, wondering why you didn’t see it coming, and wishing it didn’t have to end because it was such a thrilling ride.

Thank you to Tríona Walsh and Bookouture for the complimentary eARC in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
