Two-time Reader's Favorite Five Star Read (Bronze Medal Finalist)
There are some general spoilers here. I was conflicted with this book. The storyline intrigued me enough to finish it. That being said, I still gave it 1 star. The authors borrowed too heavily from the Harry Potter series (the four antagonistic houses), the Mocking Jay (the tournament with students dying) series and the Lord of the Rings (one totem to rule them all) series. I look for originality in books. I will say the setting they created was pretty cool. Sometimes the distance and directions were a little confusing. Definite lack of adult supervision for first year college students.
I also found it too long and drawn out. I listened to the audiobook format and often found myself thinking "get on with it." But, you can't fast forward without missing things. Then there was the cliff hanger at the end. Full stop. It can be a good technique but it didn't work here. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
3 books about 3 separate universes each got its own series ... and all 3 books are basicly the same story ... a girl who is not aware of the magical realm... a boy who fir soem reason they are connected to each other but can't/ shouldn't be together .... one fo them has a terminal illness... it's very repetitive and predictable ....
the characters talk in the first person who has gives you a feeling of self awareness but they are 17 year old with no self awareness..
it was OK
I like the magic, liked the little referencing the other magical worlds in each of those books maybe later in the series that collide ... but I didn't like that they all have the same story....

I tried the first book and couldn't get passed the fifth chapter. The main characters act like they're 12, not 18 and 21. Their inner thoughts were so childish. I then skipped to the last book hoping that a book about prison would be a little more mature, but I hated the MC. The writing style is just not for me. It's very juvenile.
With four interesting books in one, there is something for everyone who like fantasy in a school like setting. Every story is well written, though some do have 'creative' liberties in characters, settings or plot, borrowed from other well known books. Still they are entertaining enough, even though each story can be slow reading.
THE FIRE PROPHECY Interesting - I like the mix of mythology, and heavy influence of Native American mythology/beliefs. I don't agree with Sophie's decision to keep secrets, after she so vehemently disagrees with her sister, parents, etc about being kept in the dark.
I gave this book three stars because it is well-written and written interestingly. However, this book just is not my cup of tea. It seems to me that the author is attempting to cash in on the Harry Potter craze, to imitate that just to make sales. For that reason, I did not enjoy this book.
