USA Today bestselling author Serena Bell writes contemporary romance with heat, heart, and humor. A former journalist, Serena has always believed that everyone has an amazing story to tell if you listen carefully, and you can often find her scribbling in her tiny garret office, mainlining chocolate and bringing to life the tales in her head.
Serena’s books have earned many honors, including an RT Reviewers’ Choice Award, Apple Books Best Book of the Month, and Amazon Best Book of the Year for Romance.
When not writing, Serena loves to spend time with her college-sweetheart husband and two hilarious kiddos—all of whom are incredibly tolerant not just of Serena’s imaginary friends but also of how often she changes her hobbies and how passionately she embraces the new ones. These days, it’s stand-up paddle boarding, board-gaming, meditation, and long walks with good friends.
Who loooooves reading themed little stories? *raises hands*
Serena Bell decided to gift her readers, and by readers I feel like she intended this one for me, and she did it with a Valentine’s Day novella. So she took hold of her favorite pen and a notepad and wrote me 6,000 perfect words. It’s itty bitty shorty, no need to power up the laptop, right?
I can’t really say much about the story. But I can say it is wonderfully swoony and even funny at times. It’s well written and cute, and it’s a perfect little story for a 30 minute train ride. Especially if you feel comfortable giggling and blushing in a public transportation setting.
Rescue Me has the power, yes, with only 6,000 words, to restore your faith in love, or the idea of love at the very least.
Rescue Me is a short story that is currently available for free on Smashwords HERE. I'm not sure if this is a permanent freebie but I suspect it is discounted for a limited time considering you have to pay for it via the Kindle store. At around 35 pages this was a very quick read but it was one I enjoyed and I actually would have liked to spend more time with these characters.
Molly is having the Valentine's Day from hell, not only has she been dumped by her boyfriend but she now finds herself in a very embarrassing situation and having to rely on her hunky neighbour to rescue her. I don't want to say too much more because it would be far too easy to tell you the whole story so I'll just say that it was very amusing and left me with a smile on my face. It's a sweet story that can easily be fitted in when you only have a few minutes to spare and the only disappointment I had is that it wasn't longer.
Here you have two neighbors who saw each other daily but never really spoke. Molly Mack and Dave Jenkins. Molly outgoing and always smiling yet every time she met or saw Dave he never said "Hi!" or wouldn't even acknowledge her. So, she could never introduce herself to him. Yet, on Valentine's Day one of the most important days for a dating couple but especially Molly since she had taken a lot of time primping. It was for her at least until about 45 minutes before Peyton was to pick her up. Peyton calls and says that he has met someone new and that he just doesn't feel right taking anyone out but her and that he is very sorry for the late call that he felt bad for that. But hoped she would understand and hangs up. Molly was so mad that she threw her Jimmy Choo at the wall or so she thought. But no just her luck it went out the window and got caught up on the tree. So, she went out on the ledge and was reaching for it in fact over reaching for it and well could not get it. It was too far out. When she finally looked at where she was as to her window, the ledge, and the street she froze in place. Then, got the idea to sit and plan on scooting on her bottom to her window but the ledge was lined with tar paper and she was wearing a dress with no panties. Can you say "road burn?" When all of a sudden she hears, "You know you shouldn't sit there?" Was he joking? Is that what that was? She couldn't see his face so she didn't know. She said, "Thanks!" Then their banter began and he starts to come up with solutions. Dave her beautifully quiet man upstairs had a dry witty sense of humor. Most of all he was being helpful. I really, really enjoyed this sweet Valentine's Day short. I know you will enjoy it too. That it was free when I got it made it even better. Thanks, Amazon!!!
I seriously thought this woman was suicidal, but we learn quickly the reason why Molly is on the ledge, is because after her boyfriend cancelled a date on Valentine's Day to take another woman, she whipped her expensive shoe thinking it would hit the wall and it actually flew out the window, landing on the ledge. And now here was where she was stuck on the ledge.
Nice quick read with a cute hero, a quirky heroine, no sex scene (but far from being "clean") and a (sort of) HFN ending. The setup wasn't exactly the best, but everything turned out okay.
This started out so well. I even laughed a few times and I totally appreciated that the heroine had gotten herself out on a ledge (literally) over something stupid, but her motivations were believable and she owned her stupidity, confessing to the hero that she needed rescuing. I even loved it when he ended up right there beside her with the ladder lying on the ground. But then they started kissing with no lead up and it all went to hell.
Plot: Molly is stuck on the window ledge of her apartment building, trying to recover a show she threw out there in a fit of anger after being dumped by her boyfriend. Lucky for her, her hot - but grumpy - neighbor is there to help her out. Happy Valentine's indeed!
Commentary: Cute story, very short, great read for a lunch break.
Oooooh Molly. You poor girl. But it all works out for you I guess! Sexy neighbor coming to save you from your silly ex, yourself, and you getting stuck on that ledge. Yayy Dave.
Okay...so yes. Short story. Girl needs saving from the hot neighbor guy. They kiss, they talk, and they find love on a cold Valentine's Day night. It hit all the points you would expect of it, but what I didn't expect was comedy.
This had me laughing! In a good way mind you! With it...not at it. Molly is hilarious and I enjoyed following her. Dave was funny too. Poor guy is hot but he gets nervous around pretty girls so he has issues landing them...they always think he is a big silent grump who thinks he is better than me.
This was short so things happen quickly. There is an open-ended ending and it didn't bug me...which is not my norm. I do want more of course. I like solid conclusions...but I was okay with how it ended. I hope they have an HEA!!!!! I'm sure they did.
Not an amazing short story, but it was cute and funny. A good Valentine's Day short story indeed. I'll give it 4 stars.
This is a very short novella (round 30 pages) released for free for Valentine's Day!
It was such a sweet little story. Really enjoyed it. In a sentence, Molly got stuck on the balcony when she tries to "save" a shoe she accidentally threw out the window after her boyfriend, well, ex-boyfriend as it seems, dumped her on Valentine's Day. Her sexy neighbor Dave comes to the rescue and by the way shows her how much more she deserves even more she doesn't ask for much.
I think I kinda needed this novella. Just finished a book I was SO waiting for and was totally disappointed with. Needed something to get my mind of it and leave me with a smile on my face :)
I read two short novellas by Serena - "Ticket Home", "After Midnight" - and have on my reading list two full novels by her - "Still so Hot!" and "Yours to Keep".
I was laughing out loud while reading this short novellette! I loved it! The writing itself is superb and the sheer comedy of the story kept me reading on, while giggling like mad.
Molly Mack didn't expect her Valentine's Day would be such a disaster. She was dumped by her boyfriend on this most romantic day of the year, and got stuck on the unstable ledge out her window while saving her precious and new Jimmy Choo stiletto. Now she needs to be saved herself. It is freezing out there and her mummy-tight red Valentine's Day dress offers no protection against the low temperatures.
A disaster, and all because of her ex-boyfriend.
Molly needs a hero. And soon.
Though, she never expected it to be her her grumpy, yet hot neighbor, Dave Jenkins. And that he would end up stuck up there with her aswell... and noone around to help them.
Aww, I wish this was longer! It was just too short and had so much wicked potential for a longer novella or at least a short story if not a full-length novel. Still, such a pleasant pick-me-up sure to bring a smile to your face. :)
We've all been there - acted very impulsive & then try to be "cool" when caught being stupid. One of my favorite parts was her explanation of how the window jumped in front of her thrown shoe. Really enjoyed this short story.
This is a cute valentines short story. It makes a quick read so it's perfect for bedtime. I think it would be great if the author did another story so you could see what happens to the characters.
I loved this short, funny story . The characters were so interesting and cute. The author was able to add steam to a quirky, fun story. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Molly has had the worst Valentine’s Day yet. As she’s getting ready for her date with her boyfriend, he calls to cancel. He’s found someone else and has decided that he needs to spend Valentine’s Day with her instead. Throwing her shoe at her wall in frustration, she ends up throwing the expensive shoe out the open window. Then she climbed out the window to grab it and ends up getting stuck on the ledge when fear kicks in. Dave, her sexy but quiet neighbor happens to come home and finds her stuck on her roof. As he attempts to rescue her, the sparks fly. Will the two come together? Check out this quick read today and find out.
I did have a couple of issues with the story, a couple of items seemed off to me, but overall it's a good story. That's the reason for the 3 stars.
Molly was dumped on Valentine's Day by her boyfriend, Peyton. Frustrated and upset she flings her expensive shoe and it goes out the window onto the ledge. She goes out after it and freezes once she realizes she's out there. Her sexy neighbor from downstairs, Dave comes to her rescue. I loved this sweet n sexy storyline. I just wanted more. I would've loved an epilogue show Dave proposing the following Valentine's Day.
Want a fun, short read, with just a little bit of foreplay? Look no further! This story gives us just enough of a taste of what's to come without going overboard, and probably deserves a higher average rating than what it has. But *shrugs* what can you do? Welp, I highly suggest this one. Love the male character and how they end up in their predicament.
This was a really short Valentine’s Day read. I liked the character Dave but Molly annoyed me a bit. I was proud of her when it came to a certain part in the story however. Way to be a boss lady and tell that one boy off.
If you’re looking for a super short, kind of steamy but not enough to be labeled erotic, read, this would be a decent choice.
Molly manages to get herself stuck on a ledge outside her apartment, wearing very little. Dave, her downstairs neighbor, whom she'd only said hello to in passing, notices and offers to help her get inside. Enter ex-boyfriend who was the cause of her predicament and who wants to get back with her. I'll let you figure out the ending.
When she got stood up and dumped by her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day her jimmy choo put her in a bad situation but when a handsome stranger happens to find her stuck on the roof he might be her savior.
A cute short story to read this Valentine’s Day! Molly is stuck on a ledge at her apartment building after being jilted by her boyfriend. Lucky for her, the cute guy downstairs is willing to lend a hand. 3.5 stars.
