Red Shift: The Odds

Rate this book
In a future where world economies are withering, a few remaining power-houses are extending their reach beyond anything thought possible. Little more than 100 years from now, Sydney will be the technology center of the world, and with it, a hub for some of the most ambitious and powerful people. For entertainment, some choose to bet on street "Runners" to deliver contraband, or political statements, with any caveats the see fit to offer. One bid went to the wrong Runner, at the wrong time. Jack is now drawn into a battle between those that hold power, and those that want to release it.A new technology is emerging, and it’s power may change the world as we know it. Dubbed “Biotronics”, the technology allows genetically coded samples to be woven into fabrics and imprinted on materials. It can react passively to the environment, create an interface between biological and electronic systems, and that is just what we know so far. The only other thing we know, is that anybody who has power, has a desire to own the tech. The gangs that run the streets are led along by the powerful Alphas, but some know more than they let on. People are aware of this technology, and its value, and know it’s worth fighting for. But no-one owns the streets, it’s a balance of power, and that usually means a balance of income. One gang has found an unusual player they hope will shift that balance in their favour. If they can secure his service, they will have an edge that will give them what they need. It will be a bargaining chip to elevate their leaders to the true realms of power. In a struggle to escape his own personal demons, is Jack able to fight for what is good, and how is he going to do anything at all without help? Jack may indeed be the pawn that crosses the checker board, but his ego and self-doubt may be his undoing. Even when he gets the help he needs, will it be enough to navigate the streets, and how many times will he be crossed before he loses all faith and trust in humanity?

Wonderful book, love the plot and theme of it. The real life references are pretty niche. 👍
