I've done several cookbook reviews of Rockridge Press offerings and often I find the amount of photos to be quite lacking. This book by Christina Wu has photos not only of every cake but of several of the directions so you get visual as well as textual instructions. As many Rockridge cookbooks do, this begins with basics. Since most of the thematic instructions include cake recipes, I'm not we needed chapter two to give us several recipes, but at least those included adding to basic cake mixes, scratch cakes, gluten-free cakes, and vegan options as well as several frosting recipes. Four chapters focus on thematic decoration instruction in the categories of sheet cakes, layer cakes, 3D or more complex cakes, and cupcakes/cakepops. My only suggestion for improvement in this book would be to put the seventh chapter first so that the smaller surfaces give you practice for the bigger and more complicated cakes.
I just got my beautiful book in the mail today and I was so giddy!!!! Christina is amazing! I can’t wait to try her published recipes. I don’t want to spoil the surprises in book, but there is recipes with the words marshmallow, ganache, even gluten free in it. Besides all that Christina is an artist! She put step by step instructions for the very beginner baker I am. Her cakes are unique, fun and modern. The recipes anyone could use! I’m laying this book out on my kitchen counter. Please, please Christina make more books. I just found her on Instagram and I’m her new fan. Parties here we come! So fun!!! 💜
I received a copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.
This is a nice book!
The book includes the "building blocks" of cake making with cake recipes, including modifications for gluten free or vegan recipes. There are also tips on decorating cakes for different occasions based on themes or ideas. Wu walks us through making cakes and decorating them and using materials like fondant and icing. I was hoping for more pictures, but overall this is a helpful guide for beginner bakers.
I have several cake books and I really like this one. The authoress combines three main elements to create a unique and helpful cookbook. The elements are techniques - how to do everything cake related, design - making cakes beautiful and what you need to accomplish that (usually not elucidated in other cake books), and flavor, which is probably the weakest of the three, covering mainly basic cakes. Worthwhile reading for bakers.
This is a great book for decorating cakes for people just starting out in the craft. The cake and frosting and fondant recipes are simple and easy to follow. With the beautiful illustrations of the different confections, a reader will be very confident to make those different cakes. I’m glad I made this purchase, and I look forward to trying several out.
The recipes were fine. I wasn't wowed. The decorating tips were ok. The book had some pictures but not very many. I'm always disappointed when a book doesn't have many pictures of the finished product. At the price we pay for the books it should have.
