Although I am not quite a beginner reading this, I found it really well put together. The chapters on the history and philosophies behind palm reading were especially clear and meaningful, and it has a lot of great foundational information all around. I also appreciated Lagerstrom's emphasis on teaching the logic behind the lines, rather than just the generic definitions of them.
I am also just really fascinated by all the different kinds of passion that different palm readers bring to their work, and how that comes through in their writing!
I received a complimentary ARC print copy of this book from Callisto Publishers. My voluntary review is my unbiased opinion.
I have no prior education or knowledge about palmistry so I was interested in this beginners guide. The author separates the book into three sections: understanding palmistry, how to read palms and the art of palm reading.
The history of palm reading dates back before evidence of the written language. It seems to have roots across many countries, cultures and religions. The study of palmistry includes more than just a basic interpretation of lines on the hand. The branches of palmistry provide an introduction to understanding palm reading. The author does well to document the intuitive interpretation versus those of charlatans.
The journey to self discovery begins with basic examination. Focus is given to identifying hand types and finger prints including fingernails. The gestures and movements of the hand as well as the dermatological appearance are also taken into account. The information provided is clearly explained by the author who seems to be a reliable source on this topic.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the foundations or history regarding palmistry.
I came to this book as a skeptic, but really enjoyed the prose. It was interesting, and uncanny, to see how some aspects of my life are clearly indicated by my hand and finger shape, lines on my palm, etc. Kenneth Lagerstrom writes an interesting introduction to palmistry, starting with a history and later going step-by-step to clarify how different shapes, lines, scars, finger length, fingernails, etc. etc. can "decode" issues in a person's life or personality. The book itself is beautiful, with lovely full-color illustrations and graphics throughout. Part 3 is a step-by-step guide to reading for others, though the author clarifies that reading for others as a profession takes far more than an intro book to master. The end of the book includes resources and references for those who may wish to delve further.
4 stars instead of 5: The large illustrations at the beginning of each chapter are very clear, but the smaller illustrations should include labeling as well.
I consider myself fairly open-minded, and I want to believe in many different types of spirituality, healing, and thought processes. I went into this book with the plan of understanding palm reading a little more and possibly being able to use it in my own life. However, I just had a hard time buying into the idea. Even though the book is for complete beginners (like myself) with plenty of illustrations and examples, I didn't find it very convincing.
On the positive side, the illustrations are all done in cool colors, and the entire book is whimsical and attractive. The book is split up into three different parts: Understanding Palmistry, How to Read Palms, and the Art of Palm Reading. Each part is simple and easy to follow.
This book is for people who are already believe in palm reading and are ready to get their start.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not influence my review.
A great beginner's guide to learning the art of palm reading. Neatly laid out, with clear (and gorgeous) illustrations, the book takes you through lesser-known bits of palmistry ( did you know the shape of your fingernails is taken into account?) to the major and minor lines of the hand, Palm Reading for Beginners is an excellent primer for anyone interested in learning palm reading.
