If the Storm Clears adopts the wondrous parameters of speculative fiction and poetry to illuminate the sublime, or the grandeur, beauty, and awe-inspiring power of the natural world. Just as the sublime contains us in its infinite, beautiful ecosystems, we each contain an element of the sublime within ourselves.
In these wide-ranging works, edited by Katharine Threat, the authors interpret the sublime through supernatural storms, familiar bodies of water, memories, and grief. Our physical, perceived, and internal environments are explored, and the lines between them blurred.
This is an amazing collection of powerful stories. I enjoyed each one but I have to mention The Torture Orchard by Brittney Corrigan. It spoke to me so deeply. All the stories made me look at this world a bit differently and some took me on a short but vivid journey into the unknown. Thanks to everyone involved in this book’s creation!
This book is very ‘mystical’. I found myself rereading passages not for lack of clarity, but instead to make sure I felt the words through the page as best I could. Honestly, I related to so much in this collection. Mostly the callbacks to a simpler childhood now engulfed in the chaos and depressing lucidity of adulthood. Really miss being a kid, even if it was full of trauma and confusion.
