Le Fantôme de l'Opéra: D'après le roman de Gaston Leroux

Rate this book

Review of advance copy received from Netgalley
October 24, 2026
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

The Phantom of the Opera: A Graphic Novel is a stunningly dark illustrated edition of a timeless classic. Written and illustrated by the Brizzi brothers, they have managed to cleverly weave together elements from A Hunchback of Notre Dame into this timeless classic with a beautifully dark result.
I found this edition very unique and satisfying to read and visually absorb and it was a refreshing change on the classic story.
I've always been a huge lover of Phantom of the Opera and this hasn't changed but this was a unique spin to the book/musical which was enjoyable to explore.

--

EN After "Dante's Inferno" and "Don Quixote", the Brizzi brothers are back with another adaptation of a great classic, this time "The Phantom of the Opera".

And what a fantastic adaptation this is! I had already loved their previous two works, but I think this might be their best one yet.

It's truly remarkable how certain stories can remain timeless, and "The Phantom of the Opera" is definitely one of them. The story of a man who was deformed from birth and rejected by his parents and by society. Imagine what it must be like to experience that rejection from an early age, knowing that you will never be accepted in the same way as everyone else. It is the story of an incredibly intelligent man who, despite being considered grotesque by those around him, is simply searching for what we all desire: love and acceptance.

I really enjoyed reading this adaptation. I highly recommend it, both to those who are already familiar with the great classics and to those who have never had the pleasure of discovering this story.

Stunning artwork. Sincerely in love with every page of this.

Full review to come.

~~~~~~~~
I don't remember all the points of the original novel and I'm only marginally familiar with the musical. I have read several adaptations of this book, The Phantom of the Opera, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not a fan of the love story at all. I'm a fan of the Phantom and Christine but not necessarily the two of them together (awkward, I know), so why did I pick this up?
That cover art is exceptional.
So I thought, yes, give this a read, if the book is half as beautiful as the cover, it'll be worth it. And it is worth that and more because I was awed by every page of this graphic novel.
I don't profess to be any kind of expert in art. I can't tell you what tools were used in the creation of this work, only the impressions that I got from the style. It seems to have been done in graphite, giving the impression of someone sketching this out in practice for themselves only they are a genius, so nothing more it needed to convey the scenes of the book. There are shadows and blurring, adding to the mystery of the Phantom at the center of the story. There is more grays and blacks than white used in the artwork, the idea being the shadows where the Phantom feels safest being everywhere in the art for this adaptation. Details can be seen on every page in the clothes and the surroundings. The design for Erik is particularly impressive, the choice to use a full mask paired with the hat and long hair giving Erik more of an aristocratic appearance as opposed to the usual impression given as the tragic outcast hiding in the depths under the theater. The impression also seems to be that of a plague mask, emphasizing the distance that Erik feels because of his appearance and his treatment by others. The half mask seemed to be for the sake of showing the two warring sides of the character, the angel of music and the phantom, so to switch to a full mask makes it intentional. Erik is no longer the tragically misunderstood figure of the past and he has cut himself off from everyone, including himself.
A lot of the emotion comes through in the eyes of the characters. Christine could run the gamut of emotions within a couple of pages, her pain and anguish coming through with a shift in her eyes and her brows. At the same time, the lack of eyes for the Phantom helped with showing how far his obsession with Christine went because when the art actually showed his eyes within the mask, one could tell that emotions were running higher for the Phantom.
I found it interesting that several of the men in this story handle the women with violence. There's the page where Madame Giry is thrown out of office by the new owners and the way it's drawn made me recoil a bit. There are a few instances where Erik throws Christine aside when she goes against him and I thought yes, this makes sense, she won't love him because he's violent, there's no middle ground with the way he treats her in person compared to when he tutored her for her singing. There's also the way Raoul comes across with his eyes, almost the other side of the same coin that Erik is, because as quickly as he looked concerned, he could switch to being judgemental and controlling and it was all seen in the eyes. Both men want to control Christine, they want more from her than they should, that's what I've always thought, and in this art, I can really see that coming through, at least for me.
I guess I need to finally pull my book off the shelf and give it a read again. This adaptation has inspired me to rediscover that classic and if anything, it will help me appreciate this work of art all the more for the way it brought this story to life.
My thanks to NetGalley, Abrams ComicArts, Paul Brizzi and Gaetan Brizzi for the eARC of this graphic novel in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
The Phantom of the Opera is a graphic novel adaptation illustrated by Paul Brixxi and Gaëtan Brizzi. The novel was written by Gaston Leroux.
𝚆𝚑𝚘 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔?:
- For fans of the Emily Rossum and Gerard Butler movie but haven't read the book by Gaston Leroux.
- For fans of intense love triangles and a story set in France around or after the time of the Napoleonic rule.
- For those who believe that true love is letting the other go if they don't love you back.
- Strong female characters who believe 'i cannot fix him and therefore he isn't worth my time'
- characters that can be like the doubting Thomas.
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍:
- the illustrations were lovely. I hadn't watched the movie nor read the book so I was glad I could at least read the manga illustrated by these two illustrators. I loved that it was designed in a monotone shade and I love the capture of emotions.
- very quick and easy to understand. I love how small the manga was.
- the suspense and mystery was very intriguing and I couldn't stop myself from flipping through the pages.
- Christine was one of my favourite characters who stood her ground and knew how to say no.
- I liked the atmospheric feel of it. The feel of the show must go on even though so much is happening in the backgrounds is something I have always marveled at. This manga / story was a perfect example of how an entire theatre and or production gets affected by controversy.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for allowing me to read this reimagined classic!
Ngl it’s really strange to not hear the music of “Phantom of the opera” whilst reading this (love the musical as u can obviously tell, I’ve seen it twice on film and as a play lol) and there’s been a lot of changes from what I usually know of the story which was quite interesting. I could list a good couple but I’ll be heading into spoiler territory. All I can say it’s even more grittier and we see a new character that comes along with Raoul to help save Christine. Actually not a bad character and I even liked how the whole thing was darker but more sad too. I definitely prefer the original but I also definitely feel fans would enjoy this reimagined story.
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux has been one of my absolute favorite classics of love and tragedy for many years now. I was very pleasantly surprised by this new and immersive rendition that stays true to the original narrative while also paving room for the reader to connect with each character differently. The romance was very sweet and, if I'm being honest, a bit sad. Should Erik have grown up with a childhood of love and care, he would have been an amazing male lead.
However, this story shows how much pain and misery can come from being treated like a monster to the point where you start believing it to be true. That it is the only thing you can ever be. I cannot recommend this read enough for anyone who loves a haunting romantic tragedy and has always been interested in starting Phantom of the Opera, but didn't know where to begin. Here you are! 🎭🎼
Eerst, ik heb de Nederlandse editie gelezen die net uit is (en dus niet in goodreads staat), dus niet de Franse editie (want ik kan geen Frans)
Deze graphic novel is prachtig geïllustreerd, en is daarmee echt een pareltje in mijn 'Phantom of the opera' collectie (heb maar 1 editie, 2 met deze erbij maar goed). De tekeningen zijn super gedetailleerd en ze brengen de vibe van 'Phantom of the opera' echt super goed weer! 5/5 sterren voor het uiterlijk.
Inhoudelijk laat deze graphic novel wat te wensen over, logisch als je van een boek van over de 300 pagina's een stripverhaal wil maken, maar toch is het erg jammer. De relatie tussen Raoul en Christine wordt niet echt goed uitgediept, en de opera stukjes zijn best kort. Jammer, want hierdoor mis je essentieele diepgang om het verhaal te begrijpen. Nu voelt het verhaal een beetje random aan. Ook wordt het verhaal iets veranderd om het makkelijker in een stripverhaal te kunnen vertellen, iets wat ik altijd jammer vind, ondanks dat het denk ik een noodzakelijk kwaad is.
Ik zal deze graphic novel vooral aanbevelen aan mensen die een enorme fan zijn van 'Phantom of the opera' (zoals ik!!!) die gewoon een super mooie editie van het klassieke verhaal in hun boekenkast willen hebben staan. Mensen die hopen om in het kort via deze graphic novel het hele verhaal te weten te komen, raad ik toch aan om gewoon het boek van Gaston Lerloux te lezen, wat overigens echt heel toegankelijk is ondanks de leeftijd van het werk.
*** Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC ***
I grew up loving The Phantom of the Opera. I saw the musical on stage as a kid, and the merch t-shirt was my favourite item of clothing. The movie adaptation with Emmy Rossum is one of my all-time favourite movies. I haven't read the book yet, but I bought a copy earlier this year and plan to read it soon. When I saw this graphic novel adaptation, I knew I had to give it a read.
The art is beautiful. I love the pencil drawing style. The characters are distinct and detailed. I don't know if I've ever appreciated wrinkles so much. While the backgrounds are generally minimal, the panels that do feature architecture and environments are gorgeous.
The writing, on the other hand, is choppy. Despite being familiar with the story, I had a little trouble understanding it with the way it jumps between scenes. Incorporating chapter breaks would help, at the very least to mark time passing.
Overall, I'd recommend this graphic novel for the art, but not the writing. The illustrations are so beautiful, but the writing brings it down, which unfortunately puts the work as a whole in the "okay" category. If you're an art lover or a hardcore Phantom of the Opera fan, this might still be worth your while. For those who aren't, I'd steer you elsewhere unless you can borrow it from a library or get it on sale.
The Phantom of the Opera is a story with which I am very familiar, having read the book, seen film adaptations and having plenty of experience with both the Lloyd-Webber and Yeston musical versions. I was therefore keen to see what a graphic interpretation would have to offer. To begin with, you can recognise immediately from the drawing style that this is the work of the people behind Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I didn't mind the look of the artwork, but at the same time, I wasn't captivated or blown away by it. The telling of the story was very basic, and interesting Raoul stood out as one of the most prominent characters in the narrative, rather than Erik or Christine. One thing I wished for was more emotional connection with the story. It just wasn't there. I read through, already knowing, of course, what was coming next, but I felt no interest. Perhaps some of that comes from being too familiar, but then I can still watch the musical versions again and again and feel connected to the characters. For fans this might just be another adaptation to check out, but I actually think it will work better for those knew to the story, as not having other versions in mind while reading this may perhaps make the story and characters here more interesting. In the end, I am giving it three stars. It's a pleasing enough rendering; it just didn't take my breath away.
I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I first discovered The Phantom of the Opera through the title song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, sung by Susan Brightman and Michael Crawford. Years later, a friend rekindled my interest in it (she is a diehard fan). Although I have not read Gaston Leroux’s version, I have read Susan Kay’s PHANTOM and Frederich Forsyth’s THE PHANTOM OF MANHATTAN. I have even watched the movie with Gerard Butler. So, I am familiar with the storyline.
The art style disappointed me. I had expected something closer to comic book or Disney style. Now the illustrators did a great job with the background. I just wished the characters had a little more depth and personality to them. The style used for the people reminds me of newspaper political cartoons or book illustrations, especially the latter with the black and white pencil art.
What really threw me off was the dialogue bubbles. I did not like how they were done. It made it hard to follow the story or dialogue.
Adorei esta novela gráfica.
A arte é absolutamente magnífica. O facto de ser a preto e branco não lhe retira impacto. Pelo contrário, acho que contribui para a atmosfera da história e torna muitas das imagens ainda mais marcantes.
Já tinha visto o musical na Broadway, por isso conhecia a história, mas foi um prazer voltar a ela através destas ilustrações. A combinação entre a narrativa e a qualidade da arte tornou a experiência de leitura verdadeiramente envolvente.
Gostei especialmente da forma como a Ópera foi retratada. As ilustrações são extremamente fiéis à Ópera Garnier, em Paris, e já ter tido a oportunidade de a visitar tornou esta leitura ainda mais especial.
Gostei tanto desta adaptação que decidi, finalmente, ir ler o romance original de Gaston Leroux.
I love classics as graphic novels! I think they help make the classics a bit more accessible for people, and that’s always a good thing. Really enjoyed seeing the phantom of the opera in a cool sketch-like art style. Not usually my favorite but it was very appropriate for this particular story. As always, phantom of the opera creeps me out, and this was no exception. I actually jumped a bit when we first got a face reveal. Very well done!
Thanks to NetGalley and Abrams ComicArts for the chance to check this out early!
A gorgeous adaptation that I appreciated more than I felt moved by.
My familiarity with The Phantom of the Opera comes entirely from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and its film adaptation, so it was interesting to experience the story this way. I especially enjoyed how prominent Raoul was, and I found the Phantom genuinely quite frightening.
The artwork is beautiful, but the text felt a little too simple, and I never quite connected emotionally. There’s so much potential for longing, fear, and heartbreak in this story, but those feelings didn’t really reach me. Maybe graphic novels just aren’t quite my thing.
Mostly, I kept thinking about how much I would have loved having this book as a kid, when I first watched the musical and the movie. I can easily imagine younger me being absorbed by it.
As it is, I enjoyed it, but I suspect I’m not quite its audience.
Thank you to Abrams ComicArts for providing me with an arc.
This was a beautiful graphic novel of what I am assuming is based on the original book of Phantom of the Opera. As soon as I saw that the artist on this book helped create Hunchback of Notre Dame I had to grab it and the art was everything I wanted and more. This story is one that I have had a complicated relationship with for the musical but Sierra Boggess changed my mind about it completely. This story has so much depth with Christine and the Phantom as they are both such complex characters. I really enjoy this adaption of this story and I highly recommend picking this one up if you are a fan of Phantom of the Opera or even if you just wanna see gorgeous art.
Paul and Gatan Brizzi bring the classic story of “The Phantom of the Opera” alive with this beautiful graphic novel. Literally, everything about this graphic novel is perfect. The re-telling, the artwork, the characterization, the general look and atmosphere…sheer perfection.
This is another way for long-time fans to enjoy this story once again. And for newcomers, it is a great way to introduce them to the material that will surely drive them to do a deep dive from there.
This is a must have for fans and newcomers alike.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It was captivating and a beautiful homage to the classic novel about the masked Erik and his obsessive love for Christine Daaé . The illustrations are beautiful as well! They're haunting, intricate, and lean toward the gothic romance motive rather than the horrific undertones of the narrative.
Fans of the Andrew Lloyd Webber who have seen the musical but not read the novel will be able to easily follow along the plotline and will still receive new bits and pieces the opera doesn't cover (like Erik's background). I definitely recommend to readers young and mature!
Thank you NetGalley and Abrams ComicArts for the ARC.
Should you read this
Do you like the Phantom of the Opera … then you should read this.
Do you enjoy graphic novels of the classics … then you should read this.
Do you like both of the above … obviously you should read this.
This was a great adaptation of the novel, the reason it is 4 stars instead of 5 stars for me is that the art style left the image seeming a bit fuzzy. Now this could have just been the style I rarely read graphic novels or manga with this pencil drawing style - or it could have just been because this was a digital ARC and as such perhaps the resolution was just off.
Dieses Review bezieht sich auf die deutsche Edition, erschienen unter dem Titel "Das Phantom der Oper" und der ISBN 3689500966 im Splitter Verlag.
Jeder dürfte das Musical „Das Phantom der Oper“ kennen. Und ich wette, dass gar nicht mal so wenige davon ausgehen, dass das Musical von Andrew Lloyd Webber zuerst verfasst wurde. Dem ist aber nicht so, denn es gibt eine Romanvorlage. „Das Phantom der Oper“ ist ein Roman von Gaston Leroux, der diesen anfänglich als Fortsetzungsroman im Jahre 1909 in der Zeitung „Le Gaulois“ veröffentlicht hat. Die Buchversion wurde 1910 veröffentlicht und seither in unzähligen Medien adaptiert.
Das Kuriose an dem Roman sind die wahren Begebenheiten, auf denen er basiert. So gibt es bis heute einen Wassereinbruch im labyrinthartigen Gewölbekeller, das bis heute regelmäßig abgepumpt werden muss. Und auch der Tod einer Zuschauerin in Folge eines Absturzes des Kronleuchters passierte tatsächlich im Jahre 1896, weshalb Gaetan Brizzi in seinem Vorwort seine Überzeugung preisgibt, dass das Phantom real war.
Das ist auch der Grund, weshalb die Graphic Novel leicht vom Musical abweicht, da diese sich am Roman orientiert. Das Bezeichnende ist aber nicht die Handlung, sondern vielmehr der Zeichenstil. Die mit kräftigem Strich geführten Illustrationen sind einfach großartig und überaus sehenswert. Dadurch wird das gesamte Szenario in Schwarz-Weiß gehalten, was sehr gut zur zeitlichen Einordnung der Handlung passt. Dabei werden besondere Szenen in sehr großflächigen Illustrationen gezeigt, was nochmals imposanter auf den Leser wirkt.
Fazit
Die Adaption des Romans ist überaus gelungen. Wie treu sich diese Adaption an der Vorlage orientiert, vermag ich nicht zu sagen, aber die Abweichungen zum Musical sind bestimmt nicht zufällig. Ich finde hier können alle an diesem Medium interessierten Leser zugreifen, unabhängig davon, ob sie die Geschichte schon kennen oder nicht.
Note : 3.5 étoiles
Je n'ai pas lu l’œuvre originale de Gaston Leroux, je ne peux donc en aucun offrir de comparaison à ce niveau là.
Mais, j'ai beaucoup apprécié ma lecture. Ce qui m'a le plus marqué sont les dessins. En plus d'être de prime abord magnifiquement détaillés, ils sont faits au crayon à papier et, j'ai trouvé qu'ils donnaient une dimension supplémentaire à la lecture de cette œuvre. La manière de donner vie aux traits des visages m'a donné l'impression d'être plongée dans un film en noir et blanc. C'est une expérience toute particulière que je ne suis pas prête d'oublier.
