THE WALKING DEAD

Winter descends upon the Central Plains, and blood stains the snow. Princess Qinghe is slain by the Great Chanyu, igniting the Murong clan’s thirst for vengeance. Amidst the chaos, Xiang Shu and Chen Xing make a desperate escape with the help of Tuoba Yan, while Fu Jian demands justice—accusing Feng Qianjun of the princess’s murder.

But just as the blade is about to fall, Feng Qianyi appears—with the stolen Yin Yang Mirror in hand—and unleashes a nightmare upon the capital. The dead rise by the thousands, the living turn against each other, drowning the city in horror.

Now, Chen Xing, Xiang Shu, Feng Qianjun, and Tuoba Yan must unite against an army of the undead and the dark sorcery that controls them. Bound by fate and battling for humanity’s last light, they awaken a mysterious power within Xiang Shu—one that could tip the balance between salvation and oblivion.

Finally, 16 months after the release of the 2nd volume of the manhua we get volume three. Story starts at chapter 22 in vol 1 of the novel and covers through the beginning of chapter 30 in vol. 2. If we are getting about 10 chapters of the novel per volume and DFR is 142 chapters, does that mean this series is going to be 14 volumes?! 💸
Vol. 4 will be released January 19, 2027 unless it’s pushed back multiple times like this one was.

Chen Xing and Xiang Shu still haven’t figured out their relationship so XS is still acting a little grumpy but you can see he has feelings and doesn’t know what to do with them. Ended right before the real jealousy starts on CX’s side (with XS’s anda Che Luofeng)

Spoilers for Farseer trilogy, Remnants of Filth, and this book below:
🐉Starts with the death of Princess Qinghe and the puppy Xiang Shu which made me absolutely bawl in the book. If you’ve read Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy, there is similar hope for the puppy but I never really forgive Princess Qinghe for this.
🐉 More explanation about the yin yang mirror but so much is left out about what actually happens in there so definitely read the novel
🐉 Murong Chong is so gorgeous and I have a soft spot for him (almost like Murong Lina in Remnants of Filth- but not until much much later)
🐉 Feng Qingyan is captured, brother Feng Qianyi is on the run, mirror is missing and is where the army of undead is stored.
🐉 XS and CX take off for Chi Le Chuan, XS’s home and this is where the story starts to take off for me
🐉 So much pining from Tuoba Yan and I do feel sorry for him because he’s crushing so hard but do not interfere with our boys sir
🐉 We get a mention of a very important lake that was first written about in Post Training Notice: National First-Class Registered Exorcist, the first book written by FTYX in the Exorcism universe, but is modern and takes place well after DFR and Tianbao Fuyao Lu
🐉XS always getting hard at the strangest times 🤭

“When I was a child, my father told me that every part of a person’s life--when they’re born… when they say their first words, when they first develop feelings for someone, when they marry, have children, and bit farewell to their parents… and even when they leave this world—is predestined. But since we can’t see it in advance, we don’t believe people who talk about fate.”

description

I was not ready for this volume to hurt my feelings so early. The manhua has barely started, and I’m already sad. The dog. The poor cute puppy. I knew this story could get dark, but that part genuinely got to me. It made the danger feel more personal, and it reminded me that even the smaller moments can hit hard when the story is already full of fear, confusion, and people trying to survive.

I liked seeing the characters pushed into messier situations here. Chen Xing still feels like the heart of the story. He is scared, but he keeps going because he believes in what he is supposed to do as an exorcist. I also found Xiang Shu much more interesting in this volume. He is still guarded and difficult, but there are hints that something bigger is going on with him, especially with his mysterious power awakening. I really enjoy the tension between him and Chen Xing. Chen Xing brings stubborn hope, while Xiang Shu brings strength, instinct, and this quiet loyalty that makes me want to know more about him. Feng Qianjun’s situation also made me feel bad for him because grief and suspicion turn on him so quickly. Feng Qianyi brings a lot of chaos with the Yin Yang Mirror, and Tuoba Yan surprised me by feeling more important than I expected. I liked that he actually mattered during Chen Xing and Xiang Shu’s escape.

The main problem for me is the pacing. Like a lot of manhua adaptations, the scenes move too fast. Big moments happen one after another, and I sometimes wanted the story to slow down so I could sit with it a bit longer. This volume has undead horror, political blame, hidden power, survival, and a growing sense that everything is getting much bigger, which is exciting, but also a little overwhelming. I did miss having more quiet character moments, especially since I like the bond forming between Chen Xing and Xiang Shu. Still, the cover is good, and the art is good for a manhua. The expressions, action, and darker fantasy scenes all worked for me. Even with the rushed pacing, I’m still invested.

Up to chapter 107
The world is expanding more and more, and I love it!!!
Also, the MoShang vibes get stronger, hehe 🤭
That being said, the dongua pretty much covered the 2 light novels translated up until now, and I don't have material to continue the story! 🥹😭😭🫠

3.5⭐ rounded up just because. The next arc is my favorite of what I've read so far. The manhua obviously takes longer to get places than the volumes so the next book volume I read is past where I had previously read I think

The art is gorgeous and the story is unique, though I constantly feel like I'm missing something in the series. Despite Xiang Shu's refusal to be Cheng Xing's protector, he doesn't seem to object to being called by that title and does continue to save him, even help him in several instances as they try to deal with this Resentment and the undead soldiers. After several battles and tense moments, we see Xiang Shu relax somewhat as they return to a land he considered home, though that relaxation doesn't last for long when his "brother" (not actually his brother, but calls him such) arrives knocking on death's door. Cheng Xing may be the more useful one on the homefront as his healing skills come in handy and seem to ease the original confusion on his arrival. Part of me thinks I should go ahead and read the novel to see if it helps fill in some of those gaps, but I truly enjoy the art and don't want to detract from this version of publication either.

Love how Xiang Shu seems like even more of a tsundere in comic form
