His mission is to earn the freedom money he needs to retire, to avenge an appalling rape, and to satisfy the honor of a misjudged an. Along the way he meets an array of bizarre characters.

About the author

Goldman grew up in a Jewish family in Highland Park, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, and obtained a BA degree at Oberlin College in 1952 and an MA degree at Columbia University in 1956.His brother was the late James Goldman, author and playwright.

William Goldman had published five novels and had three plays produced on Broadway before he began to write screenplays. Several of his novels he later used as the foundation for his screenplays.

In the 1980s he wrote a series of memoirs looking at his professional life on Broadway and in Hollywood (in one of these he famously remarked that "Nobody knows anything"). He then returned to writing novels. He then adapted his novel The Princess Bride to the screen, which marked his re-entry into screenwriting.

Goldman won two Academy Awards: an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay for All the President's Men. He also won two Edgar Awards, from the Mystery Writers of America, for Best Motion Picture Screenplay: for Harper in 1967, and for Magic (adapted from his own 1976 novel) in 1979.

Goldman died in New York City on November 16, 2018, due to complications from colon cancer and pneumonia. He was eighty-seven years old.

Okay, I waffled between 3 and 4 stars, because here's the thing. I don't think this book would ever get published today. The language was too problematic and the characterizations of women were pretty terrible. But at the end of the day, the writing was good, and I had to keep reminding myself that this book was not published in 2024 (far from it). I obtained this book on an interlibrary loan to help me answer a research question, and when I realized it hadn't been read since 1997 I totally anthropomorphized the book and began to feel sorry for it. Because books want to be read. So I read it. And like I said, the writing was really good, even if the book's language and themes are not at all to my 2024 tastes.

Finally, I cannot believe that this was written by the same person who wrote The Princess Bride. Now, whenever anyone asks me "what's the most obscure book you've ever read by a really famous author" I will be able to say, without question, Edged Weapons by William Goldman.

Има книги, които плъзгат нежни страници по струните на душата ми и успяват да изтръгнат от тях онзи предоргазмен писък на папагал, който ознаменува срещата с наистина добро четиво. Редовете трептят, нахлуват в мен, рикошират в дъното на душата ми, после - в стените, срещат се, пресичат се, наслагват се, а накрая се натрупват и издигат до онова кресчендо, което през еоните история на еволюцията е предупреждавало милиони папагалки за близката почивка.
Самата книга е галерия от образи. Едни до други са наредени Златното момиче, Мекс, ДД, Пинки, Принца жаба, Преподобния, Дюк, Планера и още много други. Маргинали, отрепки, неудачници, доста често и престъпници, те всички са деца, живеещи в по детски жесток град и наслаждаващи се на това. Всеки един от тях е особен, различен, откачен може би и много, дяволски даже жив. Голдман се е справил наистина добре и успя да обогати колекцията ми от картички с любими герои, която кътам за особено скучните моменти, в които измъквам някоя от тях и мълчаливо я съзерцавам с вътрешния си взор, изследвайки и припомняйки си характерни черти, забавни моменти и любопитни подробности, които да разсекат мрежите на досадата.
За сюжета няма да разказвам много. Едно, че е разпокъсан и разнопосочен, второ, че наистина е трудно. Книгата започва с едно момиче, което лежи изнасилено, пребито и обезобразено на задните стълби на хотел. Главният герой обаче е един мазен примитив, чието описание по стил и още нещо ми напомни за Артър Дент. По-късно приликата се засили, когато открих, че използва много хитър метод да обиколи, ако не цялата галактика, то поне цялата Земя за по-малко от 30 алтериански долара на ден. Обаче по нищо друго не си приличат. Артър Дент най-малкото не е най-добрият убиец с голи ръце и не получава молби да убие кучето на нечий съсед.
Усещам, че изпускам много да кажа, но няма да сложа цитати, защото те ще са три-четири пъти ревюто, а това вече ще е спам. Който обича шантавите истории, с шантави герои и още по-шантави неща, които им се случват, може да си намери книгата. За останалите - приятно четене на нещо друго. ;)
ПП: Ел, това нещо го пиша след полунощ с непонятно откъде появило се папагалско перо, така че не се учудвай, ако звучи леко смахнато. :)

The story of hitman and knife specialist, Nick Escalante. Slick, stylish prose and lots of twists to the story but considering it's by William "Structure is everything" Goldman the plot feels rather shambolic.
