Zach is back at Mount Weather and has resumed his role as Director of Operations. In addition to working to make America functional again, and the upcoming birth of a child, Zach is faced with a new dilemma.
The zeds are active again and attacking survivor communities.
Zach knows the only course of action is to eradicate them, but how do they do it with their limited resources?
After being honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the United States Army, David Achord found his true calling in law enforcement. His twenty-five year career included stints with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. A lifelong Tennessee native, he is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Cumberland University.
This was one of the first series that got me into the whole zombie apocalypse genre. Few other series rise to the level of this one, though. There are subplots full romance, heartbreak, political intrigue, and more. I was afraid that I'd be lost after the long hiatus as so often happens, but it didn't happen. Somehow Achord makes you feel as if you've just closed the page from the last book before opening the next, even if it's been a year or so in between. Maybe that's because his characters are fleshed out so well. Shrug. I'm just glad that I got my Rules fix, and I'm hoping that it won't be so long for Book 10 to come out after that cliffhanger ending.
I love this series and just finished this last installment. Not one of my favorite in the story. Maybe because it was mentioned to put some questions to rest or wrap up loose ends. I felt rushed with some characters I don’t remember or cared about in the last few chapters. Could this be a set up for another installment? If so, then yes. But if it’s not. I will be satisfied that will be it. Maybe this series has run its course. I always want to know what is going on at mountain weather. But not if it will be a cheap imitation of its self. The ending did give me something to hope for though. Maybe it can redeem this book. I enjoyed it and felt somethings were rushed. Just that.
I was so happy to see one of my favourite authors had written another book in one of my top 3 book series . I cried tears of joy . Reading this one had me laughing , crying and heart broken . Oh the ending wow . I have been unable to put this down I will wait a week and start at book one again ! I hope we will see more book coming soon ! I feel like this could go places . Definitely had some up to date views and included some real life situations ( COVID ) Please give us more !
Straightforward writing style with a solid amount of character building. Each book builds well on the prior. Only very minor inconsistencies that do not affect the storyline. I am eagerly waiting number 10, and recommended this series to other friends and teachers!
Argh! Coït interrompu! When I started this series, I thought there were 9 books till the final. I'm pretty sure I was wrong. There's still at least a possibility for another one. And probably more. I hope so!
Mr. Acord's done it again! This zombie book kept me up way past bedtime. The characters totally suck you in - you'll be laughing one minute and tearing up the next. Seriously, the whole series is a must-read.
Great read. However I felt as though a lot more happened plot-wise in the other 8 books then in this one. I'm hoping this is building up to a more plot-heavy and action packed book 10!
Book 9 spreads itself across multiple storylines, but it still feels connected and steady.
Zach is back at Mount Weather, and for once, the politics are not a disaster. The new president actually listens to people. He works alongside everyone else instead of hiding behind a title. It is refreshing to see leadership that is not driven by ego.
Marvin is out recruiting when he gets ambushed. He kills the attacker but spares the attacker’s daughter, Mel. She is malnourished, filthy, and completely unsocialized. Instead of discarding her, they bring her back. Kelly and Savannah help clean her up and try to figure out where she came from. It turns out the gun and ammunition she had traced back to Mount Weather, which means someone inside supplied it.
That trail leads to a man known as King Rat. At the same time, in another settlement, a young girl is raped and strangled. The O’Malley brothers investigate and quickly identify the killer. It eventually connects back to King Rat. He is killed before everything can be confirmed, but enough is uncovered to show he was operating largely alone.
Nikki and Sam grow closer. Serena finally admits her baby was never Sam’s, and she is pregnant again. That closes that chapter. Nikki and Sam decide they want to leave and travel. They head out on their own, wanting to see what is left of the country. It feels like the start of a new arc, possibly even a spin-off.
Fred and Rachel have their daughter and are settled. He is steady and present but not central to the conflict this time.
The zombies continue evolving. Some have regained muscle mass. They are faster and more coordinated. Eve and her child remain mostly unseen, but at the end, Zach reviews footage from a rescue mission and notices Eve standing still, looking directly at the camera. It feels deliberate. It feels intelligent. It feels like something much bigger is forming.
Something significant happens in Zach’s personal life that shifts his world again. It is heavy. It changes his trajectory. Even if you saw it coming, it still lands hard.
The book closes with momentum, not closure. There are too many threads left open for this to be the end. It absolutely feels like there should be a Book 10.
Overall, this series remains the best zombie series I have ever read. Consistent pacing. Character growth that actually feels earned. Evolution that keeps escalating without feeling ridiculous. I loved every part of it, and I would read more from this author without hesitation.
