A handsome stranger appears on Susan's doorstep, bringing some devastating news.
War is coming. It is inevitable.
But first, Susan is going to have to fight some battles far closer to home. Bonds will be tested, some will be broken.
Will the Chosen One finally accept her magic, and reach her full potential in time to vanquish the Devourer for good?
You Can't Fight A Prophecy, Susan is book four in the fun, fast-paced and thrilling new paranormal women's fiction series Welcome To Midlife Magic, by bestselling urban fantasy author Lauretta Hignett.
Content Some coarse language. As well as a diverse cast of unicorns, mermaids, sentient houses, dragons, vampires and fae etc, this book does includes discussion around involuntary infertility, menopause, gender bias in healthcare, and mental health issues.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
The point at which the heroine demonstrated she has no sense of priorities at all. The stone in question is one of crucial Fae power; her earthly job is running a California call center.
“He seeks to eliminate his enemies completely by cutting us off at the knees. If he devoured our stone, no high fae would be able to challenge him.” He held it out. “Lady Susan, will you work your magic for us and close the stone?” I eyeballed it warily.
“Now? But… uh… I’m late for work,” I said, swinging my laptop bag over my shoulder. “I’ll do it later on, if that’s okay, Fionn.”
In other words, she tells him that she can’t be bothered saving his entire world right now, because being on time to her call center job is more important? Then she’s neither smart nor caring enough for me to read about her. Sorry, Ms. Hignett.
I don’t know how this book could have had a more perfect ending if it had tried; I just finished this, and I loved every single second. We learn so many things in this book, and I was shocked at all of them. Susan fights her way though so much, and she comes out stronger on the other side. Wait until you read this line: “Now it’s a peacoat.” LOL! This book is a non-stop, action-filled, well-written, engaging, funny, wonderful book, and this author just gets better and better. I can NOT wait for another book by this author. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Discovers she is the Chosen One Learns to use her magic, all by herself and better than anyone Fixes multiple realms and centuries old issues in fae that no one else has ever been able to fix Gets promoted at her mundane job Fixes all the issues in her mundane job too, including getting HR fixed Faces her worst fears and overcomes them Is arrested and incarcerated, and then raises multiple investigations that are all wrapped up within this time frame Falls in love and is listed over by multiple people Exacts her revenge by living well on her ex, his mistress and her in-laws Rescues someone else from an insane asylum and fixes her, so well that she writes multiple songs that go viral in one day and she becomes famous Fixes one of her arch nemeses’ from being an arsehole and made her want to “do good” rather than live the vapid life she loved.
Exhausting, yes. Believable, not even slightly.
Omg I forgot she also managed to organise a battle and co ordinate a sneaky plan to take down the big bad!
The thing is I quite enjoyed parts of the story. I’m a sucker for people getting their comeuppance. But the rest was just so very bullshit that it was almost unfinishable. Had the author at least given some time for these things to happen it may have been good, but seriously - the Queen gets murdered, and Susan _still_ goes in to the office before going on to win the war in two days…
I suspect the author is Australian, as well - nowhere else in the world has long service leave…

Everything must come to an end, even the fun. And the fun ended probably two books ago. This series and I had many divergencies and I struggled with many of its concepts, but in the end it wasn’t a complete waste of my time. Luckily, the story got a nice ending (even if a little hasty like I supposed) and if I think about the plot as a whole, from beginning to end, I see a simple but engaging narration. Something I enjoyed.
The same cannot be said for character arcs, nor for my eternal hate of crude language used as a means of entertainment. At least there wasn’t too much smut. But I get ahead of myself, one thing at a time.
Character arcs: Donovan was the only one who got any, and only thanks to Bronwyn. If I were to compare the Susan from the first book to the Susan of this one I would find the same exact person, just with the added knowledge that she wasn’t crazy, just gaslighted. She is still a workaholic, she doubts herself constantly and makes rash decisions based on emotions. It seems superficially as if she made a whole internal journey to accept her powers, her fears and get some self-worth back but in reality she didn’t move more than a couple of meters from her starting point. Cress is, if possible, even more two-dimensional than before, and Nate and Eryk almost became one-dimensional. Bronwyn makes more of an appearance and she seems engaged in her job of psychoanalysing people 24/7 just for kicks, but I enjoyed the couple that she and Cress made even if it still felt icky knowing how it started. Other characters are even less significant.
Crude language/smut: there are, as always, explicit phrases and scenes but I won’t ruminate on the same topics unnecessarily. Just expect the same level of crass language as the other books.
Worldbuilding: we are finally able to read a bit more about one race of magical creatures in particular but not in too much depth. There are many more that we never explore, but even if the book was trying to morph into one, it was not a high fantasy setting so we cannot expect too much on element.
The ending was pretty conclusive as I said, nothing too spectacular but at least there are no questions unanswered, considering there weren’t many questions to begin with.
I was very surprised at how much I loved this series. At first your like come on she thinks she's crazy. But let me tell you this turned out to be a wonderful series. I'm sad its over. I could keep reading it for quite a few more books.
To say I loved it would be a major understatement! To say I squirreled myself away to read it without interruptions gives you an idea...With the events of the final chapter in the last book still churning around in my head, I eagerly clasped onto this book to get answers! And did I ever get answers! I also got lots of laughs, I also got lots of VERY scary tense moments, hell, I got the full package! With a plot like this, with characters like these, with storytelling at it's supreme, it's no wonder this series captured me heart and soul! So magnificently paced, in a world, or worlds, so recognisable yet unique, this book and series turned me into an avid Susan fan. And a Cecil fan...and a Donovan fan... flip, I'M JUST A FAN! This author has taken a dire topic and situation, infused it with tonnes of laughs, action and missteps along the way to a glorious outcome.
Susan is someone who could easily be forgiven for all her assumptions, she was deceived, lied to, made to think she was coocoo, reality and hallucinations intertwined, heck anyone would have a problem differentiating truth from lies! But as she comes into her own, her inner strength comes out in full force. What a thrill to see her evolution, from a confused outcast, terrified of her own thoughts, to a force to be reckoned with, embracing her smartness and herself. The beautiful romance that evolved, is just that, beautiful. Donovan, although out of his depths in this new world, he's firm, steadfast and it doesn't hurt that he's utterly otherworldly gorgeous! His love for Susan is unwaivering, his support for her unquestionable, his protective stance unparalleled. Thanks in part to his dedication, Susan climbs out of all the poo shoveled on her, a cleaner, more determined and resolute Susan emerges, awesome transformation from scared, delusional, to magical badass!
The comic relief from Cecil was snort worthy hilarious. Hell, he's so obnoxious and snarky, gad, that mouth of his! Although, who wouldn't want a gourmet cook, a stylist, someone who can give you stiletto heels and a designer outfit at a click of his finger, someone able to conjure up just about anything all rolled up into one and that fact that he's fiercely loyal is just heavenly. But boy, I wasn't expecting HIS transformation! Nor was I expecting Fionn, that was a real surprise! All the characters are heavenly, from Cress to Bronwyn to Audrina to Violet. Ms Hignett took each one, waved her magic wand and gave us something new. At one point in the story I was literally holding my breath, not knowing if this time Susan would prevail, or even could prevail, that's how well the author tucked it out of sight. Ms Hignett has moulded all the characters to perfection, like lumps of clay, she gently shaped them into strong firm, glorious stand outs. So too does she manipulate the plot, until I'm putty in her hands! Awesome action, a really cool magic system and a strong thread of; no matter what life throws at one, one is never down and out, there's inner strength, there's truth, there's facing ones fears and overcoming them. A classic good versus evil tale but the caviar kind, rich, delicious and extremely tasty! A tale I consumed like a glutton, delighting in every nuance, every twist to a supremely satisfying conclusion! A series I highly highly recommend.
So I dived straight into book 4 as I needed to see how it all ends and after the intensity of book 3 I knew I was gonna be in for a wild ride. I wasn't wrong....
War is coming. Conner The Devourer has upped the stakes, killing the Queen and taking control of the fae army and getting ready to take his place as ruler of all the worlds. Once he has the Fae spark stone.
There is just one thing in his way, The Chosen and she isn't going to let that happen without a fight. Sure she needs more allies but Susan has a knack for making friends in strange places and facing the odds. However, this could be her toughest battle yet.
OH MY GOD this was just perfection. I loved this book so much and what a way to end the series. I laughed, I cried and laughed some more until my sides were literally hurting.
Susan has gone through so much over the course of the story, not all of it good. She's a strong, independent woman with extreme power and bad ass to boot. But what I adore about her is after all the crap she went through, she's still a loving compassionate person who truly cares for others and that makes her a true heroine in my eyes.
Donovan is still the fierce protector but being around Susan has his soft moments too, I mean who else is going to get a strong fae prince to wear a mud mask 😂 And of course there's Cress, who's found the love of a good woman but keeping her temper is still a struggle. It was also wonderful to meet Fionn, Donovan and Cress's father who is as swoony as his son.
Lastly there's my little duocorn of dreams Cecil, still hilariously funny with his crude smart mouth, sassy wit and a few surprises up his hooves. I'm literally dying with laughter over Cecil's antics towards the end of the book.
As they say all great things must come to an end, great it was but I'm sad it's the end. Loved this entire series can't recommend it high enough 😁
I know I asked for Cecil in my previous review for book 3, but I really hope there aren’t any bad feelings over it. I mean, I offered to let you keep Donovan. Oh, speaking of tall, dark, and sexy, his dad, Fionn, is on the market now, isn’t he? I don’t suppose you could hook a girl up…?
I mean, if we’re gonna be BFFs, it might be kind of fun to hang out together with the guys, amiright? And Cresswyn, too, if we can tear them away from furniture shopping long enough. Maybe we can listen to Audrina singing with her guitar.
I know you have this whole vague prophecy thing following you around, and D’s twin brother is being a complete jerk about it, and I’ve heard that running a kingdom, or realm, or the entire universe or whatever, can be time consuming. But Susan — you know what they say about all work and no play. That, and I kinda need you to hang with Fio and me because, TBH, I can already tell Cecil is gonna be an issue. His daddy kink for Fio is out of control! You’re the only one who can reason with him, and that’s on a good day. C’mon, bestie, please say you’ll come along and run interference for us. Pretty please?
Alright, if you’re still reading, here’s my two cents. Stop reading this review and start reading this awesome final installment of a fantastic and hilariously irreverent series. If you’ve read books 1-3 already, you’ll love this last part of the story. It has the same great characters, plus a few new ones to love or hate. The same sense of gallows humor that’ll have you chuckling even as the world is burning around your heroes. And all the action and didn’t-see-that-coming plot twists that you’ve come to expect from Ms. Hignett. Now shoo, get reading!
Omg, I have loved every minute of this series and I can’t believe it’s over! This was the perfect ending to this series!! Susan is still trying to balance her work life with her Chosen life. After making it back in the nick of time to stop Donovan’s mother from making Connor the heir to the Upper Realm, they learn Connor has taken things to a whole other messed up level! Connor considers nothing sacred and reaches new levels of depravity. It now he has an army behind him to try to capture Susan. But Susan has a few new tricks up her sleeve and her new family behind her as well as some unexpected allies. There is more of all the things I love about this series as well! Susan is a confident, smart woman who doesn’t take crap from anyone. Donovan is a sexy, swoon-worthy protector. Cress is still Cress, but tempered by Bronwyn. We also get to meet Donovan’s father - who gives Cecil some “daddy issues”. And of course there is Cecil!! I didn’t think it could get any better that Cecil saving the day in a previous book with a horn to Connor’s backside, BUT I WAS WRONG! No spoilers but I laughed my backside at Cecil at the end of this book. And that was just one of many Cecil related laughing fits. Everything about this finale was amazing!! It was a perfect ending and I’m sad the series is over!!
You can count on Lauretta Hignett to weave well constructed, deeply satisfying tales of adventure, magic and romance centered on brave, compassionate, determined women. The fears, trauma and failures inevitable in any hero's journey are incorporated so deftly, you feel for the hero but you never doubt her. The "Welcome To Midlife Magic" series will draw you in right away. Even when your life looks nothing like hers, you recognize aspects of yourself in her right away and her bone deep human decency is reassuring, not rigid. There is humor, friendship, courage, passion and unredeemable bad guys. I hate it when the main character forgives horrible people who have done unforgivable things only because she is a tender hearted lady. On to another tangent, I ain't ashamed of liking my spicy books (smut) but I also love a good story where the spice happens to be implied, instead of detailed. This series is the latter. You can feel the passion without knowing which tab, which slot. I loved this series but full disclosure, I have loved every single series Lauretta Hignett has written so far.
Susan's prophecy is approaching its culmination, as the Devourer enlists creatures from all the realms in his quest to rule over... everywhere. But Susan's skills have been honed to perfection as manager if a call center, and there's nothing she can't do, especially with the help of her new magical powers.
Susan is just such a great protagonist. She's strong, sensible and fights with empathy and common sense rather than brute force. The delicious Donovan in his battle leathers, sensitive bear shifter Bart, fierce Cress and her counselor girlfriend Bronwyn, and of course, the most fabulous duocorn of all time, are characters that deviate from the usual in the best way. Especially Cecil, he deviates in many, many ways.
This book made me smile, laugh and cry, and the end of the boss battle was one of the funniest things I've ever read. Susan is a triumph among heroines, and the book is a triumph too. Loved it.
This book starts out with a list of characters and a recap of the previous books. I read a lot and forget a lot, so I really appreciate these sections! Once my memory was refreshed, I dove in and was swept away by the fight to keep Connor from devouring more spark stones.
He's upped his game, though, so our Company needs to up theirs. And quickly! Not only that, but Susan has issues to conquer at work and personally.
Can she juggle it all and come out on top? I'm not telling (shh... spoilers), but I will say that you will not be disappointed. There were so many surprises, so much action, lots of humor, some poignancy, and even more surprises. Oh, and magic. LOTS of magic! And a few more surprises.
I love this world and these characters, and as soon as was finished with the book I was ready to start the whole series over again!
This series was great! I love seeing older heroines. I loved the whole premise of this story. How Susan used magic and what she learned in her life to become the Chosen One. I hope this isn't the end and that we can come back. I mean, Cecil has main character energy, and could you imagine the shenanigans he would get up to.
This was really well written, and I'm so happy with the ending. I had a notion from the hints given, but it was way better than what I was envisioning. I loved the banter between everyone. I was laughing so much. I'm trying to point out good points without giving the story away, but it's so hard. I really do hope we get some books from this universe. Maybe Bart or even Fion ( I know I wrote that wrong) will need a journey of thier own with help of others. Just a thought.
That was the perfect ending to Susan’s story! I absolutely loved this series and am so sad it is finished, we need more Susan and Cecil! The storyline was fast paced and full of surprises, all the characters we met in the previous books pop in with some unexpected twists that kept me guessing and occasionally cursing the author. The writing is brilliant and the characters are real people that have set up camp in my head and won’t leave, I laughed out loud often and may have got a little misty eyed in places. I can honestly say this has been one of my favourite new series and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Wow! There’s so much going on in this book! Prophecy can always be interpreted in multiple ways and Susan is involved in them all in this series. At the end of the previous book, a cliffhanger was left and it is explained quickly. Conner is truly evil and must be stopped because his interpretation of the prophecy means devastation for his world, his people and Susan. I really hated her ex-husband and his family, as the plot thickened. Honestly, I hated them before too. This book wraps up so much and involves adventure, romance and yes, the humor continues. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series!
Confident, assertive, focused, and goal-directed on the outside, Susan consistently re-evauates her actions, outcomes, and motivations, and often has to change direction due to unexpected outcomes and factors outside her control. Second-guessing in designer stilettos rocks. Susan is you and me. You Can't Fight a Prophesy, Susan is our story and left me feeling understood and validated. Don't give up,lean on your friends, and keep your focus on your unique priorities. You got this. Set aside some time for this book. It's a fun read that you won't want to put down.
This final book wraps up everything brilliantly. I love how Susan tackles issues, she’s kickass but uses her people management skills as first resort. It’s amazing how she can “manage” a situation.
All the characters are so good and funny, yet there’s real warmth and relationships too. So highly recommended.
Favourite quote
“The bond with my sister is at my throat energy center, because I am always having to express myself to her in a firm way, and, of course, sometimes I have to punch her in the windpipe.”
You Can’t Fight A a Prophecy Susan (Welcome to Midlife Magic book 4) by Lauretta Hignett is a 4 ⭐️ read. Aww we’re at the last book and I’m not sure if I’m happy to get the ending or if I’m sad it’s over (probably both). Susan and her friends are shocked to what Conner has been up now and know that they need to end it once and for all but there’s a few hiccups along the way. I love love love this authors books, they always show up just when I need them. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
What an ending to this fun and witty series. I couldn’t put the book down, and am sad the series has come to an end. I love each and every character in the series, they are all unique and well written; they grow through-out and bring out the best in each other, making this a most enjoyable read. Lauretta Hignett is a magical storyteller and you don’t want to miss this fast paced, witty, last book in the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’m honestly not sure if I should sigh or cry right now. Sigh, because damn, I loved that book and series sooo much. Cry, because this series is done, but I want waaaayyyy more books in that world! I honestly have no words. I laughed, I chuckled, I wanted to cry a bit, I had so many feelings for this amazing story and series. I love Lauretta and her writing. I love each series more than the last. She is absolutely hysterical and such a good writer. Loved the nod to Dwayne from The Waif in the Wilds series! I cannot recommend this book, this series, this author enough!!!
This wraps up the story as far as I can tell, for now anyway. It's definitely the best of the four books and it's a really good story. Susan takes charge, learns to command and although Connor is after her, she manages to deal with all the problems with the help of her allies and Donovan. She is no longer a frightened wimp, it works really well, she can and does put an end to the problems and saves her friends, even when it goes wrong and she does the job she should. She even manages to do her actual day job as call centre manager as well. Definitely the most enjoyable of the four books.
Susan finally comes into her own, and her friends are awesome to support her! I loved this series from beginning to end, and only wished it would continue!
No spoilers, but everyone gets what's coming to them. I love that about a concluding book! You want to read this series today. You'll find you love a snarky, boozing, smoking, duocorn that has true friendship in his heart, and of course a sexy love interest. There's a magical house that's eager to please, and very dark and scary antagonists.
Susan was just a normal woman, living a normal life, with no love life to speak of. Then she meets a couple of gorgeous far who tell her she is the one in their prophesy who will save the worlds from a tyrant's rule. Did I mention gorgeous fae? Anyways, for me the beauty in this series is how clever Susan is when she is backed into a corner. This ordinary woman, who is slowly gaining some remarkable powers, comes up with solutions to problems that long lived fae cannot think of. Remarkable.
This was a silly conclusion (for now, apparently) to Susan's adventures with being "The Chosen". It felt rather slow going until halfway through, when the action went wild, though it felt like we were an observer, even through Susan's eyes, like she wasn't really there, either (this might be the worst sentence I've ever written)? Not sure that makes sense. The series is pretty funny, however, and rather lighthearted despite all the murdering and violence. Would this be considered a romantasy comedy? I'd still recommend it if you're looking for something easy and entertaining to read.
Nice wrap-up with several misdirections. I have no problem with Susan staying on earth but it irritates me beyond belief that she insists upon keeping her stupid job at the call center. There’s no doubt that she could keep herself busy overseeing the magical world.
It’s not addressed but I assume that there would be no further need for her to close the spark stones since Connor is now imprisoned.
Curious about her lusty bond with Donovan’s father. Has Juliette really reformed?

Susan's final book in this series sees her going head to head with Connor. With so many people still out to get her making things difficult to complete the task at hand, Striker is still a thorn in her side along with Jessica and Vincent's parent's. Donovan's dad appears on the scene and Cecil isn't the only one with a daddy kink! This book is full of humour and a healthy dose of Justice. Susan knows who she is and doesn't falter in her quest. This book is the perfect finale!
I loved this series. Modern woman meets supernatural world with laugh out loud (literally, ask MT husband) results. Awesome to have a heroine who's not a 20 something supposedly ugly duckling but is actually supermodel gorgeous. Susan is relatable and I didn't want the series to end. Great action, twists and turns and fast paced dialogue. Do yourself a favor and settle inn for a rollicking good time!
