Brandt Brothers #3

Capitally Unexpected

Rate this book
Can a lifetime of love be born from just one night?

Michelle Lewis doesn’t normally do things like anonymously hook up with guys from dating apps. So, when the one night stand she can’t stop thinking about results in a positive pregnancy test, the almost-forty-year-old wonders what’s next. But it turns out her tattooed, out-of-town stranger is more connected to her Washington DC social circle than either of them knew. Now, she’s got someone ready to be there for her, however she’ll have him.

Hunter Brandt always felt like he never really fit. Getting his Culinary Arts degree at thirty-one seems like a big step on the path to responsibility. When he finds out his one-night stand is pregnant, packing up his life and moving to DC feels like the obvious choice. He’ll move in with Michelle, cooking for her and doing whatever she needs, all while working with his brothers to scale his side-hustle.

Hunter wants the chance to prove he’s grown up and can provide for someone. Michelle can’t turn down the chance to do things differently than her mom did. They know what they have in the bedroom is explosive. Now it’s time to see if they can cohabitate without blowing up their chance at a future together.

Capitally Unexpected is an open-door, accidental pregnancy Romance. Book three in the Brandt Brothers series, it can be read as a standalone.

OK this might have been my favorite of the series so far. I do love me some unexpected pregnancy tropes, especially when the guy is probably the farthest thing from a dad you would expect. And while we really didn't know a lot about Hunter before this book, we kind of got the vibe that he didn't have his shit together.

But the Hunter we meet in this installment is trying. He's graduated with a culinary degree and wants to make something of himself without handouts from his very successful brothers. He has a plan - and he's excited about his plan. Then his world is turned upside when he finds out that a one night stand is suddenly more.

Meanwhile Michelle also wasn't looking for long term commitment or a child. She just wanted to blow off some steam while furthering her career in a new area. But honestly, she couldn't have landed in a better family if she tried. The Brandt clan takes care of their own and soon she finds herself not only surrounded by support from Hunter, but from the entire Brandt family + significant others. It's more than she expected and she's slightly overwhelmed to be honest.

The overarching themes throughout these books has always been family. And I think with Michelle it runs deep because she doesn't have that support system on her side. So while she's initially overwhelmed by everything Brandt, you can tell that it's something she craves but doesn't know how to accept. I loved watching hunter slowly break down her walls and let her allow him in. The two of them together were just fire and I think they will be amazing parents.

This series is so much fun and while I don't see another book listed, we still have two more Brandt brothers and I need their stories!

Thank you @rachelwritesromance for the #gifted copy and letting me read your new book early!! [Pub Day: April 10, 2025]

Never did I think a romance about a surprise pregnancy gave a new permanent spot in my heart.

I really loved how normal this story felt. No shenanigans. No magical undertones. Just two adults navigating through life when it throws a big surprise their way.

I've never dove into books with a surprise pregnancy trope, and I am so glad Rachel's was my first because in unexpected fashion, this was a hit!

I loved that Michelle found a family through all of this. Hunter helped her believe in love and strong relationships again, which made my heart burst with happiness. Like I said before... I adored how normal the pairs romance was. Yes, they have an age gap, but they worked so well together navigating life. Work stress? Family drama? Living harmoniously under one roof together? Having a baby? They conquered it together & so beautifully.

I highly recommend Rachel's new love story! Don't be a me and hesitate on a book because of its tropes. You might find your new favorite book if you break out of your shell. I'm glad I did.

(And yes, in true Dani fashion, I will be reading these out of order because what fun is reading a series the correct way?)

I highlighted a bunch of quotes, but one of my favorites from Hunter: “If life’s taught me anything consistently, it’s that we don’t get what we want. But moving here, being here for this baby, for you. If you’ll let me, it might be what I need.”

Characters like Hunter have a soft spot in my heart - perpetually underestimated, rising to the challenge, going all-in when the occasion calls for it, and getting back up after any stumbles along the way. Michelle felt like a friend I wanted in my circle IRL – funny, independent, motivated, and realistic. Watching them go from a former one night stand to roommates to friends to lovers, it’s hard not to root for them as a couple since they compliment each other so well. I loved how the story balanced humor with vulnerability, coziness with romantic tension, elements of biological and found family, culinary adventures and behind-the-scenes of TV meteorology. Even though accidental pregnancy is a trope that can be controversial, Rachel writes this story in a way that feels authentic and focuses on the characters’ relationship with each other.

This is the third book in the Brandt Brothers series, and honestly, I fear there’s no way to top Hunter!

I knew this book was going to be good when not only was there an accidental pregnancy, but it was also a reverse age gap romance—and I still devoured it in less than a day. While the story had me laughing and giggling most of the time, I was also impressed by how realistic the pregnancy aspects felt. Whether the author wrote from personal experience or did excellent research, the attention to detail really stood out, and I appreciated it.

Hunter and Michelle—aka Bonnie and Clyde—were absolute perfection. I knew by page two that I was going to be obsessed with them. Their journey from a one-night stand to becoming parents had so many heartfelt and authentic moments. Michelle is a girl after my own heart: smart, strong, and unapologetically herself( most of the time)And Hunter….His backstory pulled at all my heartstrings. I mean, he has tattoos, he cooks, and he can make a girl laugh—what more could you want?

Lastly, I was so excited to see the entire Brandt gang back together again. The group text banter was top-notch as always. I can’t wait for Austin’s story next in Holly Ridge—and then we get Spencer!

The quintessential surprise pregnancy romance. It was so well paced and bless for it covering the actual extent of the FMC’s pregnancy while also keeping angst and tension with the romance- which isn’t always easily done with the trope since a more classic 3rd act breakup can hit TOO angsty all things considered. But there was a lot to explore especially the MMC Hunter being a bit of a black sheep of his family, almost made worse by the fact that his family is amazing and loves him 😂 like he can’t even resent them for how they show up for him and I loved that the FMC could get in on the found family. Hunter had some growing up to do in his life but he never felt immature because by the time they met and then reconnected he was already almost all the way there so the age gap (she’s older) never felt incompatible. Also the spice is fire. Thank you to the author for the eARC!

Thank you to the author for the advance reader copy. These opinions are my own.

Capitally Unexpected is the third Brandt brother book. We got some sneaks peeks of what to expect in Capitally Engaged. You can read this as an interconnected standalone, but I love seeing all the brothers and their partners together.

Michelle and Hunter match on a hook up app, and they don't exchange names. But both of them think back to their night. And then she learns she is pregnant.

The author did a great job with pacing the romance from a one night stand to surprise pregnancy. I was impressed at how the intimacy of Michelle and Hunter's relationship changed over time. And I felt the accidental pregnancy was incredibly well done in this book.

I also loved the scenes of Michelle at work and the behind the scenes of being a weather reporter. She was written really well, especially in how she negotiated her family background, her career, and her hope to be a good mom. I wanted to see a bit more from Hunter's perspective on his character growth. The pacing at the end felt a bit rushed for his progression.

But I love the Brandt brothers and their family group chats. They're so fun, and the way they show up for each other is lovely to read. I can't wait to follow this family further in more books.

Received this book as an e-ARC & in return, leaving an honest review.

This book was super cute & easy to read, the storyline kept me entertained and it was just a fun read. There wasn’t anything super extraordinary about it but I could see it being a good pallet cleanser of a book for anyone needing a quick paced book to get you to your next read. This was my first unexpected pregnancy trope read and the relationship between Michelle & Hunter made my heart very happy throughout it all. Plus to support system of their friends made it even sweeter.

I DEVOURED this book in less than 24 hours. I can’t wait for the next book in the Brandt Brothers series. ❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I have been ARC or Beta reading Rachel’s books since the start of this series and it’s truly been such a privilege to watch this series unfold and witness the growth and progression of her work. That being said, she just keeps getting better and better.

This book was so so enjoyable. Age gap and accidental pregnancy are two tropes I don’t love. Under any other circumstances I likely would have passed on this book for those reasons alone, but I am so glad Rachel was the author and my love for her books made me take the chance. She handled both of these topics with such class and respect. Major kudos to you once again Rachel Holm!

💛 One Night Stand
💛 Age Gap
💛 Accidental Pregnancy
💛 Brother Text Thread Banter
💛 Tattooed MMC
💛 Forced Proximity
💛 Roommates
💛 Found Family
💛 GOOD communication
💛 HEA Guaranteed 🥰

The Brandt brothers and the family and friends that surround them are such a delight. The way Rachel writes such genuine characters and stories is truly top notch. I love the mix of biological family and found family dynamics. There is coziness but also romance and spice. Hunter is such a vulnerable and underestimated MMC. Michelle is strong, confident, and independent. Their banter and chemistry was so good, as was the balance of humor with vulnerability. I could go on and on.

If Rachel Holm writes it, I will read it. I can’t wait for her next Holly Ridge installment. Sign me up for every ARC team for the rest of time.

Hunter and Michelle spend one hot AF night together, no names, and then part ways but…a little pink line all of a sudden makes three 🫣thankfully they end up back in each others lives and oh man does Hunter step 👏🏼 up 👏🏼 like without question. he moves in with Michelle so he can be there for every moment and OKAY CARETAKING KINK UNLOCKED 🫡

even as Hunter worked through his issues with being labeled his family’s black sleep screwup, he had such adorable golden retriever puppy with a filthy mouth energy the whole time 😉😍 and Michelle, talk about a hyper independent woman used to taking care of herself!! watching her open up to Hunter and his attention and love made me more emotional than i expected 🥹

i’d also like to praise the medical accuracy
surrounding pregnancy in this book (she even has an early glucose tolerance test! hyperspecific and accurate!), though i will say first babies can take hours of pushing, but i am so glad Michelle had a quick delivery 🤣 and man oh mannnn did i want to pummel the fat shaming doctor. i know this happens all too often and it both breaks my heart and reinforces how intensely i want to change that experience for my patients 🙏🏼

💚unexpected pregnancy
💚age gap (she’s older!)
💚forced proximity
💚found family
💚he cooks for her
💚family group chats

it was the best time back in DC with the Brandt brothers, I can’t wait to see the next brother fall in love!

Capitally Unexpected is the third book in the Brandt Brothers series and I really loved reading about Michelle and Hunter.

I quickly binged this book last weekend and I love a book set locally in Washington DC! I love we had a tease of Michelle and Hunter in book two, so was looking forward to this - even if an unexpected pregnancy isn't my favorite trope.

I liked seeing Hunter and Michelle figure out their relationship (and them both finding out they were way more connected to through each other through their friends) as they navigated the pregnancy and becoming friends first. The weather aspect was fun. This had the right amount of pregnancy/vulnerability there with great banter and chemistry.

I like Rachel's books because the characters are realistic and you feel like you're meeting your friends for brunch reading her books!

I can't wait for the next book as these brothers and so fun! I recommend reading the first two in the books in the series if you haven't, but it can be read as a standalone. They will make you want to book a trip to DC!

Thanks to Rachel for my advanced copy.

This is, hands down, Rachel Holm’s BEST book yet. I adored every single page of Capitally Unexpected from the swoony slow burn to the deep emotional growth, this story completely stole my heart.

Hunter and Michelle’s journey from a one night stand to a truly beautiful friendship (and more!) was so endearing and full of real, grounded tension. The way they built trust with each other felt so natural and emotionally honest and it gave the story a depth that made it impossible to put down.

Watching them grow individually and together was incredibly satisfying. Michelle’s strength and vulnerability, paired with Hunter’s quiet patience and steadfast presence, made their dynamic so compelling. And okay, I need to say it, Hunter is my man now. Everyone else back off!!! He was so understanding, so THERE for Michelle in every moment she needed him. I fell in love with him right alongside her.

If you’re looking for a romance that balances heart, heat, and emotional maturity, Capitally Unexpected delivers in every way. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves character driven romance with all the feels.

I always love reading a book set in the DMV and the third Brandt Brothers book did not disappoint.

Capitally Unexpected was a breath of fresh air in the unexpected pregnancy due to a one-night stand realm of books I have read. I loved that she was older. I loved that she was plus-sized and that she dealt with the real medical bias doctors have toward plus-sized women in general, but especially during pregnancy. I loved that she didn't need rescuing but that he was instantly there to support her and their child no matter her choices.

What to expect: one night stand, unexpected pregnancy, age gap she's older, meteorologist fmc x chef mc, he cooks for her, found family, interfering brothers, strangers to roommates to lovers, group texts.

Rep: plus sized FMC

TW/CW: estranged/ neglectful parent (in the past but also on page), death of a parent (discussed), medical bias toward a plus-sized women, suggestion/mention of women in STEM being unlikebale because they are too smart....

Thank you Rachel Holm for the ARC to review.

3 things happen when I read a Rachel Holm book:
1. I devour it way to fast
2. I’m in her DMs yelling at her about something
3. I find my new favorite Brandt brother.
They just keep getting better somehow.

There’s just something special about these Brandt brothers. Michelle was the perfect fit for Hunter. She was the Clyde to his Bonnie.

I appreciate the care Rachel put for Michelle. Pregnancy trope of any kind is hard for me to read (hello past trauma 👋) but I really enjoyed this. As someone who has been pregnant 4 times, I can tell when an author has no experience with it. This was the exact opposite. Well researched! Down to the Property Brothers in the waiting room and the constant discussion of your weight. 👏

Pregnancy is never the punchline.

This is officially my new fav in the series and will be hard to beat!

Rachel Holm's Capitally Unexpected, the third book in the Brandt Brothers series, delivers a delightful blend of humor, heart, and romance. Set in Washington, D.C., this novel explores the complexities of love, self-discovery, and the unexpected turns life can take.
The story centers on underdog Hunter, often underestimated but full of depth and determination. His journey is both relatable and inspiring, as he navigates personal growth and the challenges of unexpected romance.
The novel is full of witty dialogue and well-paced storytelling that keeps readers invested from start to finish. The chemistry between characters is palpable, and the romantic developments feel both natural and satisfying. Fans of the series will appreciate the continuity and character development. I have not read the other books in the series and had no trouble immersing myself in the story.
This is a charming and uplifting book that balances humor and emotion effectively.

Wow!!!! 🤩 I’ll admit, I’ve had a rough couple of days and this book has now made my week! (I feel compelled to mention that my sister just looked at me as I finished reading and asked why I have such a big smile on my face 😂, suffice it to say that I loved this story so much!!💕) At times, I caught myself laughing out loud and at others, I had to wipe away a stray tear or two. Bonnie and Clyde, (oops! I mean Hunter and Michelle 🤣🤣), make such an amazing couple and I can’t wait to hear more snippets of their story in future books in the Brandt Brothers Series!

Thank you Rachel Holm for the ARC! 💖

5⭐️2🌶️

- age gap
- forced proximity
- one night stand turned perfect match
- accidental pregnancy
- tattooed hero

Michelle and Hunter are both looking for a quick hookup and turn to swiping on some apps until they happen to find each other, but decide to keep up the anonymity (Bonnie and Clyde 🤭) and don’t stay in touch. Which seems fine at the time, until Michelle realizes she’s that pregnant, and now she has no way to contact the father. At least that is until she runs into him at a friend’s Memorial Day picnic. Hunter has to decide if he’s going to move to DC to help Michelle through her pregnancy, and if he does, does he want a relationship with her? Or is he okay with just being co-parents?

RACHEL thank you a MILLION for this arc as always, I am so obsessed with these brothers

Disclaimer: Was given to me via author this month as an “ARC”. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

First, I have to say that I have never really liked reading pregnancy tropes but when I saw the summary for this ARC, I was like “why not?” and I LOVED it! I read the whole book in a day. I loved that the FMC was relatable, especially with her body image issues, and I loved that the MMC was ready to go to war for her at any given point. The book goes a little fast with the timeline but I’m glad the author didn’t do a day by day description of the FMC’s entire pregnancy. Also, the chemistry and tension between the main characters are just 🥵🌶️😳 I am SO excited for this book to come out in a couple of weeks!

I loved this book from the very beginning. I love Hunter and his whole family. The way his whole family stood on business for each other. Reminded me of my family. Also, I see a lot of my husband in him. His back history, his love, his worries. I loved Hunter as a character so much! The book was funny and had serious moments that intertwined so nicely. I can’t wait to go back and read the other Brandt brothers books! I’m hoping since Hunter was this amazing the rest are just as good! I also loved Michelle with all her quirky ways and saw a lot of myself in her. Highly highly recommend reading this book! My middle name is Catherine too so I loved that for me and one of the characters 😘

This book went beyond my expectations. I have read all of Rachel's books, and each gets better. I love learning more about the Brandt brothers. This one is about Hunter, who is getting a later start in what he wants to do. He meets Michelle through a dating app for a one-night stand, and 10 weeks later, Michelle discovers she is pregnant. Hunter wants to be involved and moves in with Michelle.

I loved both Hunter and Michelle. Michelle is a bad ass and Hunter is just a sweetheart. I also really enjoyed their support system of friends and family.

This is a great read and made my heart flutter many times. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read an advance copy.

Enjoyed reading a book written by a local author (DC area).

The writing is strong, there are some great quotes and I loved the curvy-girl representation. Michelle and Hunter are adorable and accidental lovers goals. I want to know more about them.

This book felt rushed. It could have easily been twice as long and I would have loved it more. I sometimes found myself looking for more context, character & scene development. When there wasn’t an obvious scene change I thought I missed something but it was just the story glossing over a plot depth opportunity.

Glad I picked this up. It’s a quick read and I hope to see more!

This book was so cute. I loved how Hunter, the “screw up” brother, stepped up when he had to and that Michelle owned her curves. The deep seated doubts both of these people had about life, are they doing the right thing, navigating a relationship, navigating life changes were so great. Very realistic and you can feel the angst. I love that they both accepted themselves and each other. The spice is spicy, but naturally flows with the situations. Really well done and look forward to the other brothers because after this one, I am in love with Duncan and can’t wait for his book!

Best case scenario to come fr a anonymous hookup.

I was hooked from the first page! I wasn’t so sure how I would handle reading an unexpected pregnancy trope; but, this story just had all of the warm feels. The characters were so real and enjoyable.
