TRU LUUP: Vintage Fashion Girl, Mystery Slayer

Rate this book
Breaking rules usually means trouble -- can it ever be worth it? If it means that no one will see you the same way again, then maybe that’s ok. Sixteen year old Tru Luup, a shy, smart, vintage clothes geek, found a pin in an antique chest. Upon inspection, she could see it was old. Yeah, but she knew nothing about vintage jewelry. Tru works at a consignment shop called Second Hand Rose after school and she asked the owner for her advice — although Tru didn’t quite fill her in on all the details. Mrs. Rose was a fountain of information.

The mystery loomed, however. Was this a family heirloom. It was old, possibly late eighteenth to early nineteenth century and made in France — tiny gold hallmarks were stamped into the metal. A letter she found in Gram's desk possibly explained the origins of the pin, and the royal hair it might be containing. But was the letter authentic? Could she believe the facts as she found them? All of this was hard to accept as true, yet impossible to ignore.

What if the pin was too valuable to keep secret? There was braided hair in a locket compartment at the back of the pin and it was the same color as Tru’s. Coincidence? What did Gram know about the pin, and did she intend for Tru to find it? Mom said she needed money, and since the divorce, Dad had remarried and started a new family. Above all, she loved Gram’s house. Brushing off Tru’s objections, Mom sent Gram’s beautiful things to an auction house to be sold off, piece by piece.

Tru couldn’t keep the pin a secret and Mom sent it immediately to the auction house. Her mom refused to believe any of the facts that Tru revealed and said the pin should be sold to the highest bidder. Tru believed in heart that her mom was wrong. She was going to get the pin back before it was too late. But how? Her best friend Casey, a sk8er girl with a flip phone who knows all the lyrics to Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, was fearless — something Tru had never been before. Until now. Breaking all kinds of rules, the girls set off to the city to try to get the pin back, although it may be too late, and who is going to believe Tru anyway?

Tru discovers a determination she never knew she had. Home is where the heart is, and Tru was following hers. In the process she learns that vintage clothes are one just one way of expressing who you are. Being yourself, and letting the world know? Well, that’s just about the best thing anyone can wear.

Sixteen year old Tru Luup's grandmother just died. Her divorced Mother is struggling financially and wants to sell all of Tru's Grandmother's things. Tru finds a pin and wants to keep it. But keeping the secret from her Mother is no easy task.

Tru does some investigating, she wonders if this is a precious family heirloom. She begins to uncover some family secrets and is now more than ever determined to keep this one item.

A fast paced fun mystery. I really like Tru, she is unique and has a lot of self confidence. I find that Y/A as well as Adult mystery readers will enjoy this fun original story, filled with secrets and mystery.

I got this book for review and I really did enjoy it the author did tell me to be 100% honest and truthful so that's what I plan to be. I liked the main character she was a really sweet teen and loved her grandmother however it doesn't run in the family with her mother who wants to sell everything her grandmother owns. I wish it was the other way around thought that Tru didn't wanted to remember her grandmother until she finds that special item....

I was given the book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a quick and easy read. This is geared toward fashion minded people, mainly girls, who love vintage clothes and jewelry. The author does a great job pulling the reader in and holding their attention. The characters are well developed and the storyline flowed wonderfully. Can't wait to share this book with my daughter!
