For high school graduates and anyone heading off to college, this book is packed with 100 lessons to help shape your college experience and prepare for what comes afterward. Once you’ve been admitted to college, the next step is to develop a strategy of how to find your best life there.
Nothing too deep or philosophical here, which makes it digestible and not overwhelming for someone heading off to college. I find, as a private school teacher, that some of these lessons may seem obvious to "older" folks, but so many that I see heading off NEED to hear these. They tend to reinforce each other, with a lot of it's-okay-give-yourself-grace (and put down your phone and interact with humans).
I hope I find myself recommending and gifting this to high school graduates. If they really find and hear just a couple of gems, it will be worthwhile.
As someone that has been really nervous about wrapping up the rest of high school, and heading to college, this book definitely helped my nerves. You Got In? Now What? By James T. Hamilton, who is a professor at Stanford shares about the importance of balance and tips to maintain a good college experience. He shares about the dangers of neglecting relationships and health in college to only focus studying can cause long term damage. This tip was really useful to me, due to my drive to only focus on one particular thing, it made me realize it's all about management. I don’t need to starve myself of fun in order to score well on tests. Overall each page was filled to the brim about advice and tips that are helpful in every category or for anyone that needs a little bit of assistance. It really was eye opening and helped me navigate the next direction of my life to be a little bit more smoothly. I would rate this book a five out five for the quality of information and little bit more game knowledge about the college experiences. I would recommend this book for all seniors and those that are leaving for college shortly.
Stanford Professor and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Jay Hamilton has written an outstanding new book, "YOU GOT IN! NOW WHAT?: 100 Insights into Finding your Best Life in College." Jay read 300 books by Stanford professors, alumni and affiliates, scoured scores of commencement speeches and student reflections in the Stanford Daily to distill these 100 lessons. Everyone from Cory Booker to Sterling K. Brown to Robert Sapolsky is in here. It is amazing. I wish every graduating high schooler or current college student had a copy. Loved it. Strongly recommend.
James T. Hamilton’s You Got In! Now What? cuts through college hype to give incoming students a clear, practical playbook for making the most of their time in school—and life. Rooted in experience and research, this book skips the fluff and gets real about choices, challenges, and growth. It’s the kind of no-nonsense guide I wish I’d had, blending smart advice with a focus on mindset and purpose. Whether you’re a student or parent, this book offers valuable insights to help turn college from overwhelming to empowering.
A fast read that would make a good gift for high school seniors. He puts together a list of a 100 things that many of us have already heard or said ourselves in a series of one page essays. He quotes many people in the Stanford community and other well known people.
