Hope Harbour #2

After the Flames

Rate this book
Sometimes all you need to rise from the ashes is a little bit of hope.

Gage

While my entire life has been an endless string of mistakes and misfortune, burning down my bar—my livelihood—is definitely the worst and dumbest to date.

Okay, so I didn’t literally burn it down, but sticking my head in the sand and refusing to ask for help certainly didn’t keep this latest disaster away.

A stranger arrives in Hope just as I finally start rebuilding my life. His sweet innocence catches my eye from day one, stirring feelings I haven’t felt in, well, ever.

And even though he’s just a kid and I’m a hot mess bartender with nothing to offer, I won’t let that stand in my way. I flash him some of my trademark charm because, honestly, who wouldn’t want all this?

Ash

I’ve spent most of my life being mistreated by my mom and her partner. The final straw came when she refused my help yet again. I knew that if I didn’t leave right then, I'd end up just like her. The only solution I had was to leave my hometown to make a life for myself where nobody knew who I was. Sure, it meant leaving behind people I cared about, but I no longer had a choice.

One wrong turn later, I found myself in a quaint town called Hope Harbour, which housed a lighthouse, small-town gossips… and the biggest, most beautiful Greek god known to man.

All it took was one look at him for me to start questioning everything I’d ever thought about myself.

I know I’m just a broken kid from a small town, but maybe it’s time to start over with the charming bartender and see if we can’t set Hope on fire.

After the Flames is the second book in the Hope Harbour series. While it’s best enjoyed after His Guiding Light, it can be read as a standalone.

❤️‍🔥 After the Flames by E.L. Ough ❤️‍🔥

Reading a book written by E.L. Ough is like a giant hug to the soul. At the time, you perhaps weren’t aware that you needed it, but afterwards your heart is full and you believe in the things that matter.

Found family. Compassion. Healing. Human strength. Love. So much love. Not just romantic love but also love in shape of friendship and community.

I loved Gage already in His Guiding Light. I knew that there was more to him than just his OTT flirty exterior and cheeky persona. He was hiding something. From others, sure, but most of all, he was hiding from himself. The hurt and the disappointment in himself that he carried with him in life was palpable.

I couldn’t have written a better guy for Gage than the way Emma wrote Ash. He’s the shy and unpretentious hero of this story. Not just in his own life when he reclaims it from neglect and abuse, but also in Gage’s. Because through their chance encounter, Gage transforms and it is a beautiful thing to behold.

Gage changes because Ash needs him. And that gives Gage a sense of importance and worthiness. Their journey is wonderful to watch. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I cheered them on. Their fundation is a strong friendship and a community that rallies around them—led by Max and Jax from book one.

But the magic is their own. Ash and Gage er pure magic together. If the bar hadn’t already caught fire, it would when these two hit the sheets. Emma writes steam and kink that makes you blush, laugh and swoon and Gage is sex on legs!

Emma, I am so incredibly proud of you. I’ve watched you grow and evolve as an author. I know how much you fought to tell the story of these two gorgeous men. But you did it! The story is beautiful. You have once again shown us that you are a wonderful storyteller and an author that writes with heart, humor and soul.

❤️‍🔥 After the Flames releases September 26th. Go grab it now! It’s a must-read for age-gap and hurt/comfort lovers ❤️‍🩹❤️

What an amazing age gap story. Welcome back to Hope Harbour!!
Gage was such a sunshine of a character who owns Liquid Hope, having burn down at the end of the last book, where we pick back up in this one. He finally lets his friends in on the truth behind his smile, the debt he was left with when he inherited the bar and how he is not sure how he is going to rebuild. But in Hope Harbour, there is alot of hope.
Ash, oh my Ash. This one I wanted to wrap up in a blanket and just mamma bear him. He had a rough time of it growing up, and when he finally had enough and took off, that "correct turn" took him to Hope Harbour. He discovered what found family truly is, with the people of the grocery store, Maxwell and Jaxon, and of course Gabe. Ash also discovered himself and let people love him.

One word! WOW!!! 💛 This is such a beautiful age gap, hurt/comfort story. I was hooked in from the start and really struggled to put it down 💛

This is a slow burnish story, we get to know the characters and their background before they meet up. Sometimes I can find that a bit boring, but not in this story. E.L Ough did an amazing job writing this one. What a growth as an author. Sometimes the characters own story needs to come alive, before they meet each other. If that makes sense… The growth these two men go through is beautifully written. I’m so happy we get to be a part of this 💛

I’ve been teary eyed from heart ache, swoony moments and laughter. Some of these scenes are unique and seriously had my rolling with laughter 💛 Love snark and humour in books.

Gage doesn’t know what hits him when he faces the young, new in town Ash. Ash is just a wonderful character, broken with past trauma, but so true to himself and he’s got more confidence than I would have thought. Just a precious and caring guy who deserves all the love in the world.

I’m in love with Gage. That man 🔥🔥 and I loved seeing his soft side. And his easygoing personality is perfect for Ash.

Now I’m definitely looking forward to the next one. I have my fingers crossed that we get a glimpse of who it might be. And I look forward to getting some answers 💛

🎸 Small town
💙 Age gap
🎸 Hurt / comfort
💙 Bar owner / musician
🎸 Slow burn

After The Flames is book 2 in the Hope Harbour series.
This is Gage’s story that we already met in book 1 as Max’s best friend.

Gage (39) is Liquid Hope’s owner, Hope’s town bar that he inherited from his aunt. We leave him at the end of book 1 after a fire engulfed his bar. Now he has to pick up the pieces and start again from scratch.

Ash (20) lives in a small town with his mother who checked out on him a long time ago and is only interested in getting high. Meanwhile, her boyfriend is frequently violent with his mother and him.
One day, after the umpteenth fight at home, Ash decides to pack his van and leave it all behind.
After a wrong turn, he finds himself in Hope where he discovers people are actually nice and kind with no expectations from him, including Gage.... who becomes his landlord and roommate.

This story was so wholesome and made me believe in humanity again.
Ash broke my heart and Gage mended it 🖤

I also loved seeing a lot of Max and Jax in the story.

I wonder who the next book will be about ? I’m thinking : Jace and the new psychiatrist in town ? (There is zero clue about this in the book, I'm just making it up and trying to guess).

Arc Review

Wow just wow.

Gage Miller owns the bar Liquid Hope in Hope Harbour. The bar is not doing so well, and is desperate need of renovation. He keeps meaning to do it, until a fire breaks out and is damaged.

Ash Sanders has had an awful upbringing after his father left. His mom got involved with a vile human called Rich. Rich fleeced them for everything for drug money, for him and Ash's mom. Please see the content warnings of domestic abuse. Ash needs to get out, and leaves town. He leaves his boss Jim (who became a surrogate dad to him) and Jace (Jim’s son) his best friend. Ash keeps driving until he takes a wrong turn and ends up in a town called Hope. Could this be the good fortune he needs.

Ash gets a job in the local grocery store, which is paid via food, he lives in his van, he is a way better position than he was back at home. While working in the store an encounter with Gage, ends up with him being offered a place to stay.

Gage’s bar is being rebuilt and Ash helps where he can. Ash slowly realises he is attracted to Gage, but Ash always thought himself straight. Gage is also besotted with Ash, they need to get their act together.

This is the second book in E. L. Ough’s Hope Harbour series, and like the first one, this is utter perfection. I adored every aspect of it. The way Ash grows as a character and finds love is beautiful to read, as is the love Gage has for him. I also loved how Maxwell and Jaxon (His Guiding Light), were involved too, it was lovely to re-visit them.
Emma has a wonderful way of completely drawing you into her stories. Hope feels like a real place and I can picture it in my mind.
I am hoping we find out about Jace, and someone new in town.
All in all, I loved, adored and devoured this book. Read it please. Easily in my Top Ten of the year, but then so is His Guiding Light.

As his words flow over me, my breath catches in my throat. This beautiful man’s heartfelt song moves me so deeply that tears well in my eyes.

Gage and Ash both have my entire heart.
Ash, a broken man running from a past he did not deserved.
Gage, fighting his own battles to escape.
Fate brings them together and gives them everything they deserve in life. It was so good to see past characters too.
E L Ough has the most beautiful writing style, if you haven’t read her work, do so now!

After the Flames is the second book in the Hope Harbour series by E.L. Ough. This is the story of Ash and Gage. I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written. Ash was such a cutie and Gage such a fun goof, I love it.

Gage, at thirty-nine, is the one who covers every situation with c0cky jokes, or sarcasm.
He has no joke left after his bar Liquid Hope burned down. No one got hurt except himself.
Miserable and feeling a failure he tries to build up his life and bar.

After another black eye and other bad bruises, twenty-year-old Ash finally picks up his beloved guitar and a few other things he owns and runs.
In his old van, with no money and taking a wrong turn, he ends up in Hope Harbour. How could you not stop in a town with that name?

‘Shop for Hope’ offers meals for work. It’s meant to be!!

With intervention from Max, Ash got a spare room, at Gage’s place, above the bar!

So far so good, you think.
Except, Gage is afraid of Doc’s diagnosis of his strange tingling sensations! LOL

When the future looks way better for Gage he’s also getting back to flirtatious and affectionate.

Ash is straight so all the tingles he feels when Gage is near are… uh are, yeah what exactly?

Max and Jaxon from His Guiding Light are prominent present in this story, what a great couple!!

While reading prepare yourself for meeting Brian the Beast, oh, and his cousins, awesomeness!

Even more, prepare yourself for this whole story, it’s just amazing! It has everything you need from a good engaging story with super duper adorable characters: seriousness, sweetness, feelings (duh), great sense of humor, mesmerizing music, hurt comfort, found family, bi-awakening, so many sweet endearments, and thank you very much last but not least, holy hotness!

It’s an enjoyable, clearly designed story, all very captivating, the feelings are all over the place and palpable. The growth (read: development) the characters went through was absolutely well done, Ash and Gage are glorious!!

I enjoyed it immensely!

I think everyone who read the first Hope book knew Gages story would steal our hearts. Then we met Ash, and our hearts were theirs. Ash is coming from a small town with an addict mother. Gage was in a long-term relationship but is made to keep a secret. When these two meet the sparks, fly from the first moment. This story is heartwarming, spicy goodness wrapped up in a much needed hug.

It's a fantastic, slightly slow build that is just beautiful.

***ARC Thank you very much! This is my honest opinion.

Pardon me while I gush about all the ways I loved After the Flames.
It’s back to Hope Harbor! Gage is dealing with the aftermath of the fire in his bar, Liquid Hope (a bit of overlapping timeline with book one - which you don’t need to, but absolutely should read!) And we meet Ash, a young man who is going through a very rough patch.
🔥Be prepared to fall for both MCs. Brash, confident Gage who is secretly plagued with self doubt. I loved how caring and careful he was with Ash; how he sensed, without being told, what Ash had been through, taking things slowly, making sure he was ready. This gentle giant is so very swoony.
🎸And Ash. Sweet baby Ash! This brave, beautiful, green-eyed boy goes through so much. I’m so happy he found his home with Gage. It wasn’t easy, and the momma in me was crying at what he he had to endure, but it was so worth it.
🔥And the humor. I love Emma’s cheekiness, and the banter between Max and Gage is perfect for these two old friends. Jaxson is a riot, becoming Ash’s friend and confidant. Watching Ash bloom in a town called Hope is just so satisfying.
🎸The joy and music Ash brings to Gage’s life - playing his guitar at the bar, using songs as a love language, bliss!
🔥Ash and Gage are a slow burn, but once that fire sparks - whew!
🎸There’s an age gap, but Ash is an old soul, and Gage’s playful outlook make them perfect for each other. In their own way, they’re both starting over, Gage rebuilding a bar that is a secret burden, Ash breaking free of a traumatic home life. I loved them!
🔥And the dirty talk. Goodness, I was blushing when Gage got going - and loved it!
Want to see a tall, confident man-bun wearing drink of water fall in love with a smaller, younger dynamo who rocks his world in the best possible way? Read this book!
It’s hard to believe this is only Emma’s third book(and second as a solo writer). The way she crafts a story, creating this wonderful world of characters you want to meet and places you want to go is just amazing. You’ll laugh, cry, swoon, and want to seek vengeance against the people who hurt these lovely men. I loved it!

4.5 stars, rounded up

Ohhh, what a beautiful story this was. Gage and Ash completely stole my heart in this one, without a doubt. Emma seems to have a knack for writing about lost souls finding each other and I, for one, am so here for it.

Gage and Ash are both lost in their own way. When I met Gage in the previous book - His Guiding Light - I knew there was more to him than meets the eye, and I was right. He has such a beautiful heart, and when he meets Ash, his world turns upside down in the best way. And Ash? Ohh my heart. He's suffered so much pain in his young life. He's broken, maybe, but so very strong and resilient. His story resonated with me on a very personal, deep level. When these two meet and start to open up to each other? Absolutely beautiful.

After the Flames is a story about finding your person, your place in the world. About knowing when to let go and open your heart and start living for yourself. Highly recommended!

After a devastating fire nearly takes down everything he loves, Gage finally realizes that it’s ok to need people and accept help from his friends and community. Ash finds Hope Harbor after taking a wrong turn and decides to stay awhile to sort out his life. A neglectful and abusive home has finally driven him away in despair and the idea of ever finding love and acceptance seems impossible. Although he has always identified as straight, there is something about Gage that pulls him in. Both have built high walls around their hearts but with a little help from this loving community, they slowly learn to overcome their fears. This sweet hurt/comfort story engaged me from the first page and had me rooting for the broken boy and the sassy bartender to get their well deserved HEA. Here’s hoping that Ash’s friend Jace gets a book too! I need to know his story!!

What a wonderful book! 😍

I loved how the usual cocky Gage was so awkward and shy around Ash.

Oh and poor Ash, I just wanted to hug him 😭

I loved that the bar became a task for both of them and with the help from Jax and Max it became a place the town loved.

I really appreciated that as Ash’s attraction to Gage started he turned to Jax and confided in him, their friendship was so lovely to experience.

The way Gage wanted to take it easy on Ash since he’d never been with a guy before was just lovely. I really liked the protectiveness and possessiveness that they had for one another, they both needed to experience what love truly was, and theirs was beautiful.

I’m also really intrigued about Jace, can’t wait to see what’s up with him!

This book was a slow burn but exactly what these characters called for! Emma has created a beautiful hallmark town in Hope and I love how Ash got there and was then enveloped wholly by the town....taken in, loved, and just cared for.

Gage is still Gage...always but we got to see more of him and his vulnerability in accepting help from those around him. Getting to see Max and Jackson from book 1 was fabulous too!

Once these two got together they were never not touching, kissing, and wanting the other! It was adorable.

Learning how to love themselves and each other.

After the Flames by EL Ough is the second book in the awesome Hope Harbour series! Omg I love Gage and Ash so much!! And there's a lot of Max and Jaxon from book 1 content! That made me happy 'cause I love those guys, too!
Gage is in deep financial trouble with the bar Aunt Petunia left him. He's foregone some important repairs for lack of funding and there's a fire. He has to shut down and do some major cleaning and renovations in order to reopen.
Ash lives in a different town with his mom and her abusive boyfriend. He finally gets beaten up and rejected by them to the point that he leaves his home town looking for a better life. He finds Hope Harbour and Gage. The rest is a beautiful story of the guys learning to love themselves and each other.

We know Gage from book 1 in the series but we don't see his hidden worries. Always the loud one, seemingly chilled but underneath he is scared and worried about consequences he had no control of. Then we meet Ash, who will challenge even the most broken boys. His pain and suffering isn't just visible, it runs deep inside. How he manages to stay so kind and sweet, he is just amazingly strong. He has his dignity and determination and with the help of his best friend and best friend's dad he gets freedom. Freedom is different to many people and despite still only just getting by, he is free. A wrong turn leads him to the right place and the kindness he finds is a stark reminder that not everyone wants you to fail. He quickly meets the locals, but there is one who causes him to feel different. Ash is just about to turn 21, never questioned his sexuality; so how can he suddenly be looking at a man the way he would look at a woman. Ash isn't the only one who is affected, Gage became tongue-tied at first sight and his friends can see right through him. However, despite the instant attraction, this is a slow simmering love story. Lots to talk about and both deciding that to take it slow. The songs act as love declarations, before the three words are voiced aloud. This series creates a feel good factor, with well established characters.  I hope we hear more from Jace, he was such a pivotal friend to Ash, but his pain is as bright as the lighthouse beacon. I hope he can move on with someone new and realises it can't be with who he thought was his.

Ash is looking for a new life when he finds himself in Hope Harbour. He is living in his van and working part time when he meets Gage.
Gage is depressed after a fire destroyed his bar. Max anf him visit the store where Ash is working.
Gage is immediately speechless and in aww of Ash. He knows there is something different about him.
Ash has always believed himself to be straight and into girls, but there is something about Gage that makes him question everything.
Gage wants Ash for keeps. Can Gage make Ash see that they were meany for each other??
Favorite quotes:
“My life has been a series of unraveling events. From my ex walking out, uprooting my life and moving to Hope, drowning in debt, and enduring a destructive fire. Yet, if it meant I could experience meeting you all over again, I would willingly embrace it all. I want you to understand that your importance to me extends far beyond any sexual encounters we have had or will have.”
(Gage)
“Even without a single date, I would have no regrets about you. We could stay locked in the bar forever and I’d never regret being with you. This date is an unexpected bonus, and I appreciate it, but I would be equally content snuggling up and watching TV. Whatever your intentions were for this date, please know that you don’t have to feel pressured to do anything specific to make me stay or maintain my interest in you. Just being with you makes me happy.”- (Ash)

If I was amazed by this author’s first book then I’m blown away by the follow up. Her growth as a writer is phenomenal and she writes in a style that I love, down to earth, tell it like it is, that makes you feel a part of the story.

We met the charismatic Gage who owns Liquid Hope in book one where his pride would not let him admit to his friends just how bad his life and finances had become. This proved to be a big mistake and he underestimated his friends. I love Jason. This book has a bit of an overlap with book one when Gage’s bar goes up in flames and he is hurt.

When you reach rock bottom the only way is up and then Ash walks into his life. OMG I wanted to wrap him up in a hug. The life that boy has had with his vile stepfather and his useless mother made me cry, thank god for his best friend and his dad.

When Ash finds himself in Hope Harbour, living out of his old van, the lovely couple who own the grocery store give him hours in return for food and the residents were all so kind to him he was overwhelmed.

There is an age gap and it’s a slow burn, which is so right and fitting for these two as Ash always thought of himself as straight, but the feelings and love that developed were beautiful and watching Ash find himself, become stronger and stop looking over his shoulder was so satisfying.

I received an ARC and in my honest opinion I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait for book three.

This one was much awaited and definitely worth the wait! Gage watching his bar go up in flames was a hard hit and starting over when he’s in over his head is more than he’s ready for but good friends make all the difference. Ash is staying in a terrible situation, trying to do good by a mother who won’t help herself. When he finally leaves, he finds himself in Hope with confusing feelings for the hot, older bartender, and a past that he can’t escape from.

Reasons I Recommend:

1) Love Gage’s cocky and funny attitude

2) The entire scene with Brian had me crying in laughter and

3) Such an amazing love story of trust and hope.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quote: “I’m sorry to break it to you, Gage, but you have a mild form of... feelings.”
My head jerks upward in surprise so quickly
I’m sure I slipped a disk. “What?”
“I understand that it’s a lot to process, and as time goes on, your symptoms may worsen, potentially impacting your entire body, possibly taking over your life. There’s no need to be alarmed, though. You’re not on the brink of death. It happens to people all the time.”
I frown. “You’re pulling my leg again, ain’t ya?”
Doc erupts into uncontrollable laughter, a deep and hearty belly laugh. “Gage,” he says with a warm smile. “You are truly one of my most favorite patients.”

Gage + Ash
oohhh I was so looking forward to Gage's story and I can most definitely confirm it did not disappoint!
I absolutely adored Gage and Ash and their age gap mm story!

Things are not going well for Gage. His bar Liquid Hope burned down and he is drowning in debt.
With a little hope and some incredibly supportive friends will Gage be able to rebuild his bar?

Gage is such a loveable character. While things aren't currently going his way he still gives off such golden retriever vibes and I loved him for it.
He is such a man child at times it had me giggling at some of his humorous antics.

Enter Ash....
Oh my heart! You know those characters you just want dive in to the book and give them tightest bear hug? Yep..... Ash is one of those characters.
My heart ached for him! His childhood was heartbreaking! If anyone deserves a found family and a HEA it was him.

My heart was so invested in these two from start to finish. What an emotional journey they both took me on. In particular Ash who went through so much personal growth.

I devoured this sweet, slow burning story that ended with the perfect amount of spice.

Also..... squeee loved getting some more of Maxwell and Jaxon from Book 1.

Love this little world and can't wait for more!

Wow! This beautifully written age-gap, hurt/comfort romance had me hooked from the start. It’s a slow-burn, but the pacing works perfectly as we really get to know the characters and their backgrounds before they meet. Sometimes that can drag, but not here. E.L. Ough has done a fantastic job in letting the characters' stories breathe and grow before bringing them together, and it adds so much depth to the relationship.

Both men experience incredible personal growth, and it’s written so well. Gage is caught off guard when he meets Ash, the new guy in town who, despite his past trauma, is confident, caring, and true to himself. Ash deserves all the love, and Gage—who has his own mix of charm and a softer side—complements him perfectly.

There were moments of heartache, swoon-worthy scenes, and lots of humour, too. Some of the snarky exchanges had me laughing. Overall, this was such a heartfelt, emotional story, and I can't wait for the next book! Fingers crossed for a sneak peek into what’s coming next!

It was so good to jump back into the world of Hope ❤️

I’ve been waiting to read Gages’ story since we first met him in His Guiding Light and I knew his book was going to be a good one.
When we first get to meet Gage, he comes off as cocky and arrogant, and while I don’t mind that, I just love the character development for him. I do have to admit, I loved his crude humour and I did find myself laughing out loud a few times 😄

And Ash, poor sweet Ash deserves better (don’t worry because he does get his happy ending!!) his home life was awful with his parents and while I sympathetic with his mum, his “step dad” is a real piece of work.

Reading about abuse is always hard, but I think the way the author handled the sensitive topic was done really well.

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by this author, so while I knew there was going to be some hurt/comfort vibes, I also knew the author would write about the good loving feelings and they were written very well 🔥

I really enjoyed reading Gage and Ash's story. I was captivated from the beginning..their heartbreaking struggles, their friendship bond was so endearing, and the sweet way they fall in love brought tears to my eyes. The banter between them funny to innocence awkwardness that was so adorable. OMG the shower scene with " Brian the Beast" I laughed so hard...my sides were aching just imagining that scene playing out!!! Loved how found family and friends helped rounded this book out even more with the couple struggles. Highly recommended this read.

I’ve waited for Gages story, ever since I fell in love with him in Maxs book! 😍 and it did not disappoint! It was so good! 💙

This was a stunningly beautiful story about love, hope, second chances and finding a place to call home.
I love Emmas writing and how it instantly gets you hooked and the way it makes you feel. 🥺

Absolutely adore Ash and Gage! 😍 their connection was instant, but I loved how they took their time. My sweet Ash 🥺 my heart broke for him so many times. He deserves the world and he truly found his in Gage.
It was so beautiful to witness their love and care for each other. And how they healed together🥺 just loved them so much! 💙

My babies Max and Jaxon! Loved having them there so much. The found family these guys have is just exquisite😍💙

Please do yourself a favor and go fall in love with these amazing men! 💙 and if you haven’t read His Guiding Light yet either, then go that now!! 💙💙

love Gage

Gage finds his love. This was sweet book. I’m so glad Gage found his love and now the group is a happy family. I am left disappointed with how surface this was and how conversations that needed to be had didn’t happen. But it was a good story.
The epilogue total disappointment.

For future me:
Dual POV
Relationship before smexy
No cheating/sharing
No strict roles
Lacking diversity

Another fantastic read by this author

I can't say this enough this author does not get the exposure she deserves. This book was written so well. Gage and Ash are a match made in heaven. I loved this couple I think more than I did max and Jaxon. I really appreciate the hard work this author puts into her writing and the depth of her characters. I think I am going to have a book hangover

Wonderful

Ash and Gage's initial meeting was funny.
These two wounded souls are on the tail end of some horrible events.
What I really enjoyed was the way these two helped each other heal.
They both have character growth, and it really shows in how they respond to one another and eventually move on from their pain together.
