I have really enjoyed Mia Watts in the past and find her work fun and sexy. Her latest, Jacked, is a character driven, friends to lovers story that happens over a short time frame. Ty comes out to his friend and Donovan finds he starts to question his own sexuality. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be as entertaining as expected.

Other than the story having a small problem with continuity (reference was made to a scene that never happened), I found myself not really liking either character. Donovan plays hot and cold, and is admittedly “douchey” towards Ty. Ty is overly forward and pushes Donovan too much. So much so that, if this was a het romance, he would be seen as an over aggressive jerk who couldn’t respect boundaries and I would expect the heroine to slap him. The dialog of the book says it’s “ok” because Donovan is “hard” and therefore wants it.

“I’m straight,” Donovan repeated. His gaze slid to Ty’s lips.

Ty smiled. His stomach flipped as he realized he hadn’t been the only one affected by that kiss. Ty moved his hand from Donovan’s chest to his groin. Hard cock pressed his palm. Ty lifted his brows with interest.

Donovan shoved at him. “Hey!”

Ty rubbed. “Hey, ” he acknowledged, though his voice dropped suggestively.

It left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s not like I don’t appreciate pushing the borders of consent in the right context and setting, but the initial tone of the book is light-hearted and it doesn’t fit. Some may see it differently. After all, Donovan does cave and acknowledge that he has repressed feelings for Ty. If Ty never pushed, it wouldn’t have happened.

In the end, you see that Donovan less than straight tendencies have roots that extend to before Ty’s confession, which makes his struggles a little more believable and allowed me to forgive his behavior and vindicate Ty’s actions. However, I am still left feeling little for this couple.

I didn't find this to be too bad. In actuality there was one area that didn't fit with the rest of the book for me. At the office when Donovan suggests them rubbing one off. The tone of it just didn't fit seeing as he's struggling with feelings and possibly being gay.

Then when it came to penetration. For a guy that has preferred anal with women, his technique was lacking. No warmup just shove away. This would be the second sore spot of the book.

Overall not a bad friend to lover story.. could have been polished up a little more.

I love the MM trope of friends to lovers and this short novella was a great example why. Donovan finds himself curiously aroused by Ty’s announcement that he’s gay. Though best friends for years, Ty never acted on his feelings for Donovan but when Donovan starts asking curious questions about being gay, Ty wants to show Donovan how great gay can be.

I liked this story a lot because it captures the emotional growth between the characters, including how messy it was to add sexual intimacy to a friendship. I really appreciated how the novella didn’t gloss over Donovan’s callous treatment of Ty after they’d been sexual intimate but instead forced some honest communication between the men. The epilogue wrapped up this strong relationship perfectly and topped off this enjoyable quick read for me.

My one tiny eye roll was how many times and context the word “jacked” was used. I’m sure this was supposed to be cutesy but I just rolled my eyes at his simplistic convention. Still, it’s not that distracting so if you like the friends to lovers trope as I do then you should enjoy this short novella.

Donovan works with his best friend and business partner Ty. Donovan is heterosexual man and Ty is a gay man. Ty is attracted to Donavan and Donavan is curious. Ty pushes boundaries by using hands on demonstrations to answer Donavan’s questions. Donavan is upset by the idea of Ty finding a boyfriend.

The chemistry between Donavan and Ty is blistering. I find it amazing that it took this long before it became an issue. I would have thought that this would have come up long before now. It seems that Donavan never even though about being attracted to guys or even just his best friend. I liked that Ty was able to see beyond the surface and able to push Donavan.

I found this book well written with interesting and engaging characters. At 55 pages, this was a quick hot book. I loved that this story pushed the boundaries of what we can be attracted to without needing to label it. Does it matter if Donovan is bisexual or just attracted to Ty? Overall, this was a great book.

It all starts when Donovan asks his best friend and business partner Ty “What is it like?” The possibilities to that question and how it can be answered are endless when considering Ty’s thoughts and feelings towards Donovan. Of all the reactions Ty was expecting when he came out to Donovan, that one didn’t even make the list. In an effort to see this through to the endgame Ty will do his best to answer all of Donovan’s questions to the best of his abilities.
Mia Watts has treated readers to a fun and exploratory read with Jacked. Straight Donovan’s thoughts on gay Ty are always interesting. I stress here gay Ty, because Donovan has been used to a straight Ty and straight friends in general. One question leads to more on both parts. This is a fun, flirty, and very sexy read.

Very cute and funny little read. It was great to see Donovan respond to Ty and look back over his sexual history and realize that, huh...maybe something has been wrong for a long time. I love that we got both their points-of-view, how they challenged each other, and how no matter that they fought and were confused and closed off from each other, you could still see the threads of their close friendship in everything they did.

A very quick read that I put away in one sitting. Well worth the read (even though the price on Amazon seems a bit high for the length) but it was so much fun, and I do recommend it.

"Ty had fucked Donovan's brain over and he no longer knew which way was up. Something his cock made a regular attempt to clarify. Stupid appendage."

Love it!

Re-read (9/16/15):
I really wish I didn't re-read this one cos the suck fairy visited and she was harsh! I had such fond memories of it and, well, the re-read erased them all. Obliterated them even. Yeesh, maybe it's because I've read so many more gfy/ofy friends to lovers stories since I read this but man, it really didn't work for me as anywhere near believable the second time around. It was still steamy but even those parts felt kind of empty because the emotional journey from friends to lovers felt forced. Oh well.

Original Review (4/29/14):
What a great little story! I thought the friends to lovers journey was well done and it was really steamy. It's definitely a book I'll re-read -- especially certain parts. ;-)
