Raine Tucker has finally found a home in Castle Rock, Oregon. She has a small cottage on the outskirts of town, not far from her brother and his new bride. Her days are split between working at the town’s medical clinic and caring for a private patient with dementia.
Thomas Billings is finally settling into his position as bank manager, a job he earned through hard work and dedication. He’s even building his dream home on land he inherited from his late grandfather. Now, all he needs to make his life complete is a young woman to court and eventually marry.
With the annual winter fair and quilting competition coming up just before the holidays, will the single ladies of Castle Rock work overtime to impress Thomas with their homemaking skills? Or will the only young woman not in the competition be the one to catch his eye.
Nancy Fraser has been writing since she was a child, most often on walls and with crayons or (heaven forbid) permanent marker.
Since first becoming published in 1996, Nancy has received numerous five star reviews for her futuristic, time travel romance.
She’s also published in short contemporary, historical romance and is contracted for a series of ten vintage historical romances set during the Golden Decade of Rock & Roll (1955-1964).
When not writing fiction, Nancy likes to spend time with her five wonderful grandchildren.
The Christmas Quilt Bride books are clean, sweet historical romances with inspirational elements. Each book in the series is a stand-alone book by various authors.
Raine Tucker, now twenty-three, has been raised by her older brother, Tate since she was about fourteen years old. They have moved around because of his work and now they will be leaving Bozeman, Montana because of a new assignment with the Marshal Service. They had already moved three times in four years. Raine did go to school for six months to train as a nurse, so she can usually find a position as a nurse. They will be moving to Castle Rock, Oregon and then Tate will be able to pick a location to settle down.
“Something to talk about? Where had she heard those words before?”
The story will have the Tuckers moving to Castle Rock in 1886 and Raine working for Doctor Noah Davies at his clinic but also helping the Billings family with their matriarch, Elvira Billings, a dementia patient. Tate has married Sarah Billings, and they have made Castle Rock their permanent home.
Thomas Billings, son of Philip and Elvia Billings, has moved back to Castle Rock after graduating from Harvard and then spending time training further in the banking business. Now, he is the bank manager in Castle Rock and hoping to find a young lady to marry and begin a family with.
As with the previous stories in this series, they do revolve around the holidays and Christmas time, and quilts. Thomas will be asked—or rather shamed into being a judge at the annual winter festival. Arlene: I’m hoping you’ve finally run out of excuses, and will agree to judge this year’s quilting competition.
Thomas: You’re right, Missus McMillan. I should be ashamed of myself. Arlene: So, I can put you down to judge? Thomas: Yes, ma’am. I’d be honored. Tate: You know what you’ve done now, don’t you? Thomas: Yes, I’ve volunteered to judge a bunch of quilts, a job for which I’m totally inept. Noah: That’s only part of it. You’ve also put a bullseye on your back for every young woman in town and surrounding county. You might as well put a sign on your back that says, ‘Single man in search of a wife.’ Thomas: It can’t possibly be that bad. Tate: Trust us. We’ve both been through it. It’s definitely that bad.
I liked the characters and their interactions. This was an emotional story that I could relate to with having a family member with dementia. My mother had it for around twelve years and watched how it affected her—and our family—especially our father. My heart ached for Philip, and how Elvira didn’t recognize him and was at times even hateful. To see the love of your life slipping away, and there is basically nothing you can do to change it.
The story is sweet and the characters are likable. It was fun being back in Castle Rock. I had read the stories of Noah and Audrey, and Tate and Sarah. Seeing Raine Tucker and Thomas Billings find their happily ever after was fun. While Thomas does judge the quilting at the winter festival, it has a surprising result.
Raine loves living in Castle Rock and helping others, especially a patient dealing with dementia. Feelings bloom for Thomas Billings but does he feel the same? Only one way to find out…
Raine is a heartwarming historical western romance I thoroughly enjoyed. I’ve read the previous two books in this series written by Nancy Fraser and this one is just as good. The story is historically accurate with a wholesome narration I simply adore. Nancy Fraser harkens back to a different era and brings readers along for the ride.
The characters are what make Raine such a wonderful read. Raine is a nurse who touches many lives in Castle Rock. Her medical expertise is impressive but it’s her mannerisms with patients are what stole my heart.
Seeing the effects of dementia on the patient, her family, and friends of the family is poignantly described. I have to admit I cried a little. It was fascinating to read how they handled it back in the day.
The romance is slow-burn and wholesome. Nancy injects all the emotion without any of the steam. I fell in love right along with the characters. Another romantic gem by Nancy Fraser and one I recommend.
This book is so well written, I love Raine and Thomas's journey, theirs is not a big, loud instalove, but a quieter, deeper forever love that forms slowly over time before catching you out with its intensity. But for as beautiful as their story is, Elvira's dementia is devastating. It is portrayed so well, the frustration for the sufferer, followed by confusion and oblivion, the hurt and pain suffered by the family when she doesn't recognise them and becomes distressed, and the selflessness and determination of her carers who work tirelessly with and for her to keep her quality of life. This all combines into a fantastic read. It may have put me through an emotional wringer but I loved this book. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
I have enjoyed reading about Raine and Thomas’ romance with her friends and family. Finally Raine has the loving family she’s always wanted and needed. Spectacular series. Well written and beautifully touching story.
