Indigo Layne doesn’t need anyone’s help to get what she wants. Less than a year away from getting out from under her parents’ control and finally living life on her own terms.
Indie is the caretaker in her trio of friends. She likes to be the one saving the day and never the other way around.
When her father orchestrates a surprise demand that puts her in a new city and job of his choice, Indie agrees for the sake of her inheritance. Even if it means leaving everything she cares about back in California. Nothing is going to get in the way of reaching her goal to start her own nonprofit in Amado.
Nothing, of course, except Theo Yao-Miller, the renowned NHL goalie and newest member of the Toronto Tempests, who happens to be her teenage crush and the same person who brought her heart six years prior.
Oh, and did she mention that Theo is her best friend’s oldest brother?
Theo
With more than a decade of keeping his lifelong dream of playing in the NHL alive, Theo Yao-Miller’s comfortable world is rocked when he is traded after spending thirteen years playing in Vancouver.
Being a veteran player on a roster of younger players gives him something to prove. His dedication to his own excellence and the game of hockey has also meant ignoring the increasingly painful reality of his chronic knee injuries.
At the threshold of the next stage of his life, Theo is determined to push through this new season without any more complications.
Except complicated moves in across the hall in the form of the incredibly brilliant and stunning Indigo Layne. It was one thing to turn down her advances six years ago, but is he supposed to keep himself away from his little sister’s best friend after he sees sides of her she hides from the everyone else?
Not a chance.

This is my 3rd 6 star of 2025. This didn't make me ugly BUT it put me in my feels in a positive way. I felt so seen with Indie. Through her, I was validated in what I felt/feel, and personal choices I made to make me function in a somewhat healthy way. I felt seen. This was a cathartic story for me and that's a good thing. That's what a story can do for you.
People perceive Indie as someone who doesn't let nothing and no one disturbed her. She doesn't like to expose her true feelings about anything/anyone because she knows that in the end, she will only get hurt by it. She worked hard to build this facade so that her heart doesn't start bleeding again. A pivotal moment was when she was 16 or so, she made a move on her best friend's brother (Theo) and he rejected her because of their age gap. Coupling that with the fact that her parents are like robots and you have a person who will die from the inside out slowly if she didn't put up some type of barrier between her and the world. In my opinion, Indie isn't like your typical ice cold character that you think is a B---- but you see glimpses of something warmer so you what to know more to make a decision. WIth her you knew all alone she was a bleeding heart, people just had to try to break through her walls. Maybe it's because of book 1, I loved her then but I loved even more in the first chapters of this books. She is my first favorite FMC of 2025 because it is rare that i read a character that i can relate to so much as i did with her. She is under so much pressure from her parents which let me tell you, I would wring a neck or 2 if i saw them. Her parents are rich and so greedy that they just step on everyone including their daughter just because legacy must go on and money must be made 😠. Why did she put up with her parents for so long you ask? She wants to open a charity for kids... Like you see what I mean? She was amazing. It was the right balance of being a Boss woman but also grounded and compassionate. I loved the way she went to war for the ones she loved who are her 2 girlfriends, Abbie (book 1) & Emery (book 3), and Theo and his family and she will do it no matter what.
Theo has been a Goalie -sorry if i'm getting terms wrong but I don't really like this sport. No offense to anyone who does- for a good amount of years so now with injuries not healing properly, he is getting close to retirement even though he doesn't want to but if he must, then he wants to do it with a bang. He moves to Canada and that's when he saw Indie after all those years since that fateful, not reciprocated kiss. That encounter does something to him but most of all, he wants to repair what he broke. Indie was and is his sister's best friend but they were also friends once. He is at the point of his life where he realized what he unintentionally did to those around him and that included her. Oh and by the end she works with his team so everything is aligning. You could tell Theo was a good man from the beginning and the fact that he was aware of his and other emotions and feelings was great to read about. He was very conscious of the people around them/ the ones he loved and he wanted to repair those relationships because he doesn't want to feel alone anymore when he knows his family loves him and they are ready for him to show up.
I loved the persistence in him. Once he understood Indie was really single, he went for it. He was determined to make this work. You know when you're reading a best friend's brother or sister and the moment comes when they fight or break up because of said sibling? Yeah, here that's not what happens which i LOVED. This is why i don't read many stories with this trope because it frustrates me to no end but not this one. Indie objected to a relationship because of his sister and he immediately hit her up and asked her point blank if she had a problem with it. He SEES Indie for what she is on the inside. He doesn't let her distract him with her words because he knows there is more to her than what she says. Her actions doesn't reflect her facade that she shows everyone and he knows it.
I loved these 2 so much! No break up at all because they know each other and they have faith in their feelings. I loved a lot more about this but this is a LONG review already. If you happen to actually read the whole thing, I'm amazed by you and I hope you give this author a chance. You won't regret it.
This second chance hockey romance was as cute as it was spicy. The history between Indie and the whole Yao-Miller clan is so heartwarming, and following Theo and Indie's journey as they reconnect. Theo admits that his priorities used to be elsewhere and that he was on a high at the beginning of his career. Seeing Theo's perspectives change as he realises what he's been missing is so mature and I can only imagine how important a decision like that is. Theo isn't the only one facing big decisions. Indie has always been under her fathers thumb and she's starting to wonder if now is the right time to break away from his controlling behaviour. I love seeing an FMC take control of her life, and Indie had a life altering decision to make. They happen to find each other at pivotal points in their lives, and I loved reading their story as they healed and helped each other. Their relationship was so freaking sweet, and the Yao-Miller family won me over the minute I met Emery. Violet's writing is so relaxing and easy to follow. I'll definitely be reading more of this series.
I would recommend this book if you love - second chance - age gap - hockey romance - best friends brother - found family
This is a best friends brother which is a favorite. Theo and Indies story was so good I couldn’t put it down. Even with Indies family drama I still loved Theo. The chemistry was great and it was well written.
cute read but i cringed at the overused 'baby' esp when it was mentioned so many times in a single chapter and the dog's name is gizmo, they call it giz and i kept reading it as jizz and that was not fun lmao 🫣😭

I was really looking forward to Indie and Theo's story and the romance was all I could ask for as I love how this author writes it. Our main character has a lot of issues with her parents and that is something I already knew about from the first book but I didn't think it would come out as much as it did here and I think that made me not enjoy the read very much, while I liked the couple of Theo and Indie a lot and that there was almost not as much drama with them together (talking about the people they both love) I did feel like there was a lot of drama towards the end. I love Violet's writing and the first book in this series Not As Advertised: a workplace, age-gap, spicy romance is one of the best books of the year.I liked this book but not as much as I wanted to.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
Not a Chance is my first novel by Violet K. Avery, and she has found a new reader in me.
Indie and Theo have known each other for years, considering she is his sister's best friend. But she has been secretly crushing on him forever, and one Christmas night, at 19, she takes her chance. Unfortunately, she is rejected, and it is that rejection that has stuck with her all this time.
Indie comes from a very well-off family who has attempted to control every aspect of her life. In his latest move, Indie's father forces her to take a job on a PR team for a Canadian hockey team. (Seriously, I HATE her father.) What he doesn't know is that in doing this, he sets Indie on a course that will forever change her life.
Theo, a veteran goalie who was just surprised that his Vancuvor Hockey team that he has been with since he was drafted has up and traded him to Toronto. On top of this, he is starting to realize that he may not have much more time between the pipes. On his first day in his new city, he runs into the last person he would have ever expected, Indie. Not only that, but she is his new neighbor.
I loved this relationship. Best Friend's Sibling is fast becoming my new favorite trope (top 5 at least). I love that we get the flashbacks to when they were growing up and how connected their younger selves were. The tension and banter between these two was great, and I loved, LOVED the found family for Indie. The Spice, well, let's just say she is in control, so if you love a strong woman in the bedroom, you have found her in Indie. And can we please talk about the inner thoughts we are given? I love when authors do this.
I canot wait to see what comes next in their series!
Thank You Violet K. Avery and Grey's PR for the ARC in return for an honest review.

4.5/5⭐️ Indie and Emery are best friends who are so close that Emery’s family, the Yao-Millers, treat her as one of their own. During Christmas six years ago, Indie (age 19) decides to be courageous and reveal her feelings for Theo (age 25) , Emery’s older brother, but gets rejected. After that embarrassing moment, Indie and Theo do not meet for the next six years.
Now both of them are forced to move to Toronto for different reasons (Indie due to her parents, Theo as part of a transfer), and it ends up bringing both of them into close proximity as neighbours. Indie avoids him as much as possible though due to the incident six years ago.
This time, Theo finally sees her as the lovely and strong woman she is, instead of just his younger sister’s best friend. Is this finally the right moment for them to become something more?
Theo is charming from the first time we meet him but for me, I fell in love with him when he took great care of Indie when she was unwell. He knows how to go at her pace and never ever pushes her too far. Their scenes with Gizmo were also so cute and funny!
I also loved how Indie bonds with her besties Emery and Abbie, and also her newest friend, Connor. The found family vibes here were so heartwarming and I enjoyed seeing them supporting her when she needed it!
Not a Chance is the second book I read by Violet K. Avery and I loved it just as much as the first tone! The author does an amazing job of incorporating emotions, and the heavy, into her writing, while also tying in so many moments of lightness and humor.
This book follows Indie, one of Abbie’s besties from the first book in this series, after she is forced to relocate due to her family. Meanwhile, at the same time, Indie and Abbie’s other bestie’s older brother, Theo, is relocated to the same city after a trade from his NHL team. Theo and Indie were friendly as kids, but haven’t seen each other in 6 years. A lucky series of events forces this pair back together again, and from there we see so much unfold!
I loved this book. The balance between the emotional aspects, and being broken up by characters like there’s siblings and Gizmo(the most adorable chihuahua ever), was an amazing balance. In addition, it was a great minimal detail hockey romance, with not too many hockey parts, but focusing on the friendship and team aspects.
Overall, I loved this book and cannot wait for Emery’s story! Thank you so much to Grey’s Promo and the Author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you to Violet K. Avery and Grey's Promotions for a copy of Not a Chance!
Not a chance follows Indigo "Indie" Layne and Theo Yao-Miller as the two reconnect after losing touch six years before. Indie's father forces her to pack up and move from California to Toronto where she will be working for the Toronto Temptests where Theo - Indie's best friends brother - has just been transferred as their new goalie.
This is the authors second book and I really enjoyed it! I felt the story was sweet with the two getting their second chance along with Gizmo the rescue chihuahua getting her second chance too!
I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the infantalising of the dog e.g. calling her a niece but I don' have a dog (yet) so I can't say I won't be the same when I have one 😂 Also this is just a personal preference but I'm not a fan of the nickname "baby" being used a lot in romance books but again that's a preference thing for me and I know that takes nothing away from the story.
I enjoyed Indie's character development but I just wish we got a little more from Theo - he mentions starting going to start therapy and then it's just never mentioned again.
Overall it was a quick, sweet read and I'm excited to read about Emery in book 3!
TW if childhood emotional abuse is an issue for you. I was uncomfortable reading the opening scenes plus her abusive bully of a father. Somebody said this was a 'cute' story'. It's far from 'cute' to me. It started off OK, predictable, superficial; then I grew to dislike it. I understood Indie but not Theo's behavior. I didn't get why he had such a sudden change of heart about Indie. He sees her for the 1st time in 6 years and decides she's a goddess and doesn't deserve anybody else but him. Then he's pushy even when she says 'no', and leave me alone. He never listens to her; just overwhelms her. Course, she allows it. Hated that he essentially forces her to kiss him. The kissing scene writing is cringey ("I sucked her bottom lip and made love to it before giving it a sharp nip." A whole page of this. He starts calling her 'baby'. Then she says yes to him coming to her room, to 'talk', despite about 2 pages of all the reasons why she shouldn't, because of her dad. Just say NO then! Lost me right there. I skimmed the next 30% of nothing but sex scenes including the graphic phone sex. Skimmed to the end.

Theo and Indie’s story was cute with a story about second chances and living up to family expectations. Her family believes that only the family name should be upheld and her wants and dreams don’t matter. When her father dictates that she needs to move to another town for her job she is surprised to see from her past. Her best friends’ older brother, Theo, is a professional hockey player and has been traded to the team Indie is now working for. Theo has his work cut out for him because he hurt her years before and she hasn’t really gotten over it. Indie is dealing with her family, and he is making up for the past while they are figuring out their relationship. This book has its very entertaining moments. I love how Indie is independent and her strength. There are a few laugh out loud moments and I love the twins they are hilarious. This is my first book by this author, and I cannot wait to read more books by this author.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from Violet K. Avery and Grey’s Promotions.
If you love romances told from the heart look no further than Not a Chance (Heartstrings #2). This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last. This is Indie and Theo’s emotional journey. Indie has known Theo all of her life because she is best friends with his younger sister. When he walked away he broke her heart but now they find themselves both living in Toronto and now they are neighbors. Indie has always looked after herself, she doesn’t need anyone in her life because her family has made her believe you can’t trust anyone but yourself. But when Theo is traded to the NHL team that she works for and they start to spend time together she realises his care and protection shouldn’t be turned away…… This was a heartbreaking yet heartwarming story, I loved everything about this read from the characters to the witty banter. I’m looking forward to reading more from this talented author.
This is the second book in this impressive series, and this is Theo and Indie’s journey. Indie craves to live her life on her own terms away from her controlling parent, and is counting down the days, until her father orchestrates a surprise demand, and for the sake if her inheritance she accepts a new job in a new town. Theo is Indie’s best friend and older brother and she has had a crush in him for years. Theo is a goalie who has played for the same NHL team for the past 13 years, and now as a veteran, he is being traded, for which happens to be for the same team Indie is working for. This is a well written story which has family, friendships, emotions, heartbreak, second chances, surprises, humor, witty banter, challenges, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and heartwarming, sports romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Not A Chance is a beautifully written second-chance sports romance that kept me hooked from start to finish. I absolutely loved the dynamic between Theo and Indie—especially the way Theo quickly realizes that Indie is the one for him after six years apart. His protective nature and unwavering support for her made him such a swoon-worthy hero.
One of the things I appreciated most was how Theo not only shows Indie that she’s his one and only, but also empowers her to stand up for herself. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their journey felt heartfelt and genuine.
That being said, I wasn’t ready for this story to end. After Indie finally stands up for herself, I felt like there was still more to explore, and I would have loved to see a bit more resolution. Despite that, this was a fantastic read, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to more from Violet K. Avery!
This was a fantastic read and I’m thrilled I took a chance to request an ARC from Grey’s PR when I read the blurb!
The storyline as a great backstory with Indie being best friends with Theo’s younger sister since they were small children and him unintentionally breaking her heart when she was 19. Now both Indie and Theo have moved to Toronto and are neighbors, and the age gap between them isn’t a factor anymore.
Indie works for the NHL team Theo was traded to and she tried her best to resist his sexy charm. She’s used to taking care of or protecting those around her, so she’s unprepared for Theo’s tender care and protectiveness. I loved the sexy banter between them and her ability to stand toe to toe with his teammates.
Her family is unbelievably toxic and it’s no wonder she treasures her friendship with Theo’s sister and adores his family. Indie fostering Gizmo was a sweet addition to the story. Gizmo, a nearly hairless chihuahua immigrating to Canada definitely needs a warm wardrobe to keep her from freezing!
I’m eager for more books from this author!
I received a free ARC from the author and Grey’s PR; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.
What a great introduction to Violet K Avery’s writing. I loved the character development in this best friends brother/second chance romance and the emotions evoked from every choice Indie made based on her experience with family.
The push and pull between Theo and Indie had me hooked from the beginning. Indie’s plan of avoidance only worked for so long under Theo’s determination to show Indie that she could trust in someone else and rely on him.
Having an overbearing father and indifferent mother really messed up Indie’s view on relationships and it took Theo’s patient and understanding approach to allow Indie to open up.
Great story and writing from an author i would definitely read more from.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved everything about this book. The author was so right when they said the heart of this book was the relationships. The second chance, found family in this book was beautiful to read and see grow throughout the pages. I loved how Theo was all in pretty much from the start despite the sass and pushback coming from Indie. And let’s not forget the quiet, yet freaking adorable rescue pup Gizmo. If any character rescues an animal or has full on conversations with said animal I will instantly fall in love with them. I’m so impressed that this is only the authors second book. I can’t wait for the next book! Well done.
Enjoyed Theo and Indie’s story. It had some great tropes- forced proximity, age gap, hockey player mmc, second chance romance, best friend’s older brother… Theo and Indie both overcome major emotional speed bumps regarding each of their family situations that eventually have them opening their eyes and realizing they can’t stay away from each other and they don’t want to either. Once that happens, their story is sweet and spicy and they find the life altering love that they both didn’t know they wanted and needed. Both are ready and willing to give up their dreams for the other and finally realizing that being together, wherever that may be, is what matters most. ❤️
This is Book 2 in the Heartstrings Series by this author, and can be read as a standalone. It is an off limits, second chance romance between Indie and her best friend's older brother, Theo, who haven't seen each other in six years. These two flawed but likeable souls and the unique plot make for an enjoyable read. Once they reconnect, it is a bumpy ride with drama and steam, sexual tension and chemistry, humor and charm, family dynamic, and twists and turns, plus appealing secondary characters to keep the reader interested. Entertaining.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Grey's Promotions and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
What a wonderful book! I knew I would love Indie Layne from the very first line about her in Not as Advertised, she is the best friend we all need and she goes above and beyond for the people she loves. I was hooked on this as soon as I started reading it- is a best friends brother, second chance, sports romance (some of my favourite tropes) so of course I ate it all up! I have love everything that Violet has written so far and I can’t wait to continue reading everything that she writes! 10/10 would recommend this book and this amazing author ❤️
Honestly I don’t have a lot to say, I read Not as Advertised and it was already obvious how good Violet K.Avery’s writing and chemistry between the characters are !!
The whole sibling dynamic in this book just warmed my heart and Theo and Indie relationship felt meant to be. They gave each other what they lacked and fit in the other’s life so well !!
I also feel like we got to see Indie ‘grow up’ and affirm who she really wants to be and what she wants to fight for !!
Abbie, Indie and Emery friendship is to die for, they’re so cute together and I can’t wait for Emery story 🫶🏼
4.25 ✨ A great read - best friend’s brother, years of pinning, finding themselves and each other, helping each other grow. All the great things. I loved the chemistry between Indie and Theo. I loved the friendship and found family, for Indie especially given her family background. This book didn’t take me to an emotional place, but it was a light and easy read — despite the heavy topics it does include.
I loved Theo and Indie's story. Loved their history, the theme of found/chosen family, friendship, and so much more. Great banter and many funny moments. Loved the steam and connection between Theo and Indie. So many emotional moments as well. This was a great book!
Not A Chance is an amazing best friend's brother, second chance sports romance. Idie and Theo's chemistry is super hot and it's a pretty spicy read. Really Loved this one and cannot wait to read more in this series.
A cute read with a great story being told. Indie has big dreams for herself…if only her father believed in them as much as she did. Moving to a new town, taking on a new job she is surprised to see someone from her past. Professional hockey player Theo has been traded…new team, new town. But one familiar face…Indie. Between the drama Indie’s family brings and these two figuring out where they belong together…this book is very entertaining. There are a few laugh out loud moments…I love those text feeds. Then the emotions these two go through is very touching. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I loved this book so much! Indie is so determined to make her dreams come true. Theo has his whole world knocked off its axis. Watching the two of them find a new dream together was beautiful!
I am new to this series but I am definitely going to go back and read the first one!
This is an amazing read! Indigo and Theo were both amazing characters. They have an amazing connection together. It was easy to root for them the entire time.
Thank you Grey Promotions for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
