How can we be at book 8 in this fabulous series already? I welcomed DCI Bone with open arms, not so sure about Mullens (especially in body hugging Lycra!) &, of course, the rest of the Rural Crime Unit.

The story begins at the Glendurie distillery where a guided tour is underway. The bar manager has not turned up for his shift but it all seems to be going smoothly. The calm, enjoyable atmosphere rapidly changes & DC Will Harper is injured chasing a suspect. Add in money laundering, drug smuggling, an accountant called Dribble (yes, really) & a new female boss for Bone & everything is set for a complex tale.

I loved this book; Bone is under pressure professionally & personally & they are on a similar clashing trajectory. Well paced with plenty of humour, I can’t wait to see where book 9 takes us; a tantalising thread is dangling. Oh, I’d just like to add, my reading in a Scottish accent is coming on a treat!

Book 8 in the DCI Bone crime series set in Campsie Fells, Scotland and this time the team have a murder in Glendurie, a family run whisky distillery. Hamish Durie is showing a group of visitors around the family distillery and during a tasting he collapses and within minutes is dead, clearly poisoned. First on the scene is part time Lycra lover DS Mark Mullens, just read it! At this point in my review, I was wondering whether or not to add a few little puns i.e. taster, still, strength, aging; I decided not, Mullens in Lycra is enough distraction.

Briefly, investigations lead the team to believe that the death, and the fact that the bar manager is missing, are connected to an organised crime boss, Frankie Feelan. Feelan has been a thorn in their side for years but it seems that their case is encroaching on a longstanding investigation into fraud and drug smuggling involving Feelan and if they carry on they could risk this much larger investigation.

I love this series and have read them all, this is definitely my favourite so far. Fast paced and with the usual humour amongst the team to counter the darker moments. I love the team dynamics and it will be interesting to see how new broom DS Vanessa Laverty will fit in. I think I like her! A gritty book with a good plot and an interesting development for Bone, I didn’t expect that. Very good read.

Pre-review review. Full review at the end.

At this point, I've only read through chapter 13 and this is bugging me…so much so that if I wasn’t invested in the series, and this was just one-off, stand alone book, I’d DNF.

Agnus’ teenage/young adult pregnancy and her family reaction/response…why are the coppers so into this line of inquiry for the non-victim? It’s historical (uk term) and how would that lead to her brother’s death now?

If it does in fact have something to do with the case, fine, great, and even interesting, (and if not, what an incredibly odd red herring) but at this stage of the investigation, a poisoned, murdered brother and a sister’s 20+ year ago pregnancy seems wholly unrelated and makes Bone, Walker, etc look downright insensitive and looking to make it fit a narrative before there is even one. Wouldn’t Hamish’s gambling and drink problem be a better starting line of inquiry?

Again, not saying the pregnancy isn’t or can’t be a motive, it’s just a really odd one at this stage of the investigation and a weird thread for them to be pulling at with what info is currently available.

Additionally, Bone and Walker are being rather clumsy with the interview with Dribble- switching gears from did you oversee the share changes to why £600K as a bonus, surely there’s some bridging questions? And they wonder why he got his gruff up so quickly. Do I think £600K is a huge bonus, oh yeah, without a doubt something to be suspicious about but it’s their lack of tack. Honestly, these characters are just acting differently than normal.

Alright, those were notes I stopped the book to jot down before I finished the book but now I am done and I can say that that line of inquiry was f**king stupid. It only served to show part of their father's cruelty but for how much the detectives asked everyone about it, it was really pointless.

If I get a chance to meet the author, this is one thing I'd like to talk to him about...what was the point? A very sensitive topic for anyone and handled so grossly and unnecessarily because the author never wrote anything giving the detectives cause to pursue it like they did. Why were they so bloody interested in this?

Apart from that, I loved the story. Mostly. It was brilliant in some parts like the new DSUP Lafferty, she really had me all over the place from hating her to thinking, maybe she's alright. Mullins and his dad still tug at my heart. Will, oh my. And then there's Walker.

That scene with her could have been far more epic but was over as fast as it begun. Reid could have gotten a bit more drama out of something so harrowing. Walker kept saying over and over again that she had a bad feeling or uneasy feeling with the couple who eventually saved her but didn't say why and nothing came of it....why say it so many times for it to be nothing. Just like the pregnancy...

The storyline itself was fantastic. Love the evilness of one sister, the uncertainty of the other, and slain hero of a brother. I truly have a love/hate feeling for this book.

Oh and John Logan...the name bugs me, but the storyline...clumsy. Way to much build up for what it was. John was really doing some illegal stuff and then after a convo realizes Duncan had no clue so all is well. Why not just have a f**king conversation. Duncan put his family in 'hiding' because of this. What was John's plan if Duncan knew all along? Again another big, big build up for no reason. Sure, learning Bone's father was a bigamist is a huge thing, but the appeared and actually villainy of John was OTT for the resolution.

Great ideas in this book but they weren't as executed as well as other storylines in previous books.

I seem to have developed quite a cavalier attitude towards reading the DCI Bone series in order, which why I find myself reading book 8, A Devil’s Share, after reading the third book. Yes, I have missed a lot of the developing backstories of our Rural Crime Unit, but I was still able to thoroughly enjoy the book, and the banter between the characters; so feel free to enjoy the book as a standalone.

Conveniently, DS Mark Mullens is close at hand, though off duty and Lycra clad, when the alarm is raised that there has been a death at the local family run distillery. Hamish Durie, proud fifth generation distiller, has collapsed at the end of a public tasting tour. As soon as DCI Bone, DI Walker and the team start looking behind the old money veneer of the Glendurie distillery, it becomes apparent that there is a much murkier undercurrent afoot.

As I have come to expect, TG Reid has woven a complex plot, which is well written and gripping. The characters are fully rounded and feel real in my mind. The gritty writing style is narrated superbly by Steve Worsley. I won’t ever be able to look at WD40 without hearing Steve’s voice in my head.

I don’t know whether to be alarmed or amused, that both Mullens and I replied Ghostbusters in perfect synchronicity when he was asked a question. It certainly tells me that we are a similar age, so maybe I should take up yoga too. The author proudly places one of my favourite Scottish words in to the dialogue. Cockwomble is a magnificent word, though I personally reserve it for a certain someone whose skin tone, places him as a near relative to the Oompa Loompas.

As you can see from my comments above, the book provides humour throughout, which helps to balance the darker moments. I was gripped by both the main storyline, and the situations that the team found themselves in. I’m pleased to see that the ninth book in the series is planned for publication next Summer. While I’m patiently waiting for Dirt Road Dead, I will play catch up with the books from the series that I have missed out. Scottish Noir is quickly becoming a favourite for me, and this is a fabulous series within that genre. However you choose to absorb your books, physical, e-books or audio, I highly recommend A Devil’s Share and the whole Bone series.

The guide at the Glendurie Distillery in Kincraig drops down dead at the end of a tour, his whiskey poisoned with cyanide, and DCI Duncan Bone and his team of DI Rhona Walker, DS Sheila Baxter, DS Mark Mullens and DC Will Harper from the Rural Crime Unit in Kilwinnoch have a new case of murder. Hamish Durie was the black sheep of the family, an alcoholic racking up gambling debts and living in a grotty flat over a newsagents, repeatedly bailed out by his two business partner sisters who live in a gothic mansion surrounded by security men. Had he taken out one loan too many and fallen foul of a loan shark company run by notorious gangster Frankie Feelan or is there something more sinister lurking within the business dealings of this dysfunctional family? The detectives soon discover the bar manager is missing, and everyone is keeping secrets, including the company accountant and also the governor at Northlands Prison where Organised Crime in Glasgow are investigating a major drug smuggling problem that seems to be linked to their case. With Harper undergoing lifesaving surgery after being attacked by the fleeing assassin and Bone personally threatened, the pressure is really on this time before anyone else gets hurt or worse.
The Peekaboo Killer’s red-haired shadow still looms over Bone in this fast paced and excellent police procedural which features a clever twisty plot with plenty of action and suspense yet still lots of warmth and humour within the team. There are hilarious moments once again as Mullens tries out new yoga gear and Junior becomes very Zen, whilst the team have a new boss to break in as DSU Gallagher nears retirement. I do hope there’s more to come in this amazing series which I have adored right from the start! Can’t recommend highly enough!

This is my first dip into this series and it works well as a standalone. I listened to the audio version, very well narrated throughout. Gripping from the start as the prologue introduces the crime; a distillery tour guide takes a dram and drops dead at the end of his tour. The deceased is a family member of the long established distillery, but with a chequered past. Enter Bone and his team, tasked with uncovering what went on. I found this title particularly engaging for a number of reasons. I loved the Scottish setting and learned a little about whisky distilling. The characters are plausible and it works as a police procedural. Perhaps the best but is the interplay between the police officers. A new Detective Super is clearly a thorn in the side. Mullins is the comic element; a buffoon but likeable nevertheless and adds dimension. And put that mix together with some skilful plotting around family feuds and Glasgow underworld and it’s a winner. I really enjoyed this outing and will definitely follow up other books in the series.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for a review copy.

Without doubt one of my favourite series and I love picking up with Bone and gang as I would my friends.
This is set in a distillery when a man is killed on a whiskey tour. Bone and team have quite a challenge ahead of them when they uncover a family feud, gang control and a huge drug operation.
There is a lot going on in this book especially with the team They certainly go through it. The humour is still there throughout, as much with Mullens and his dad as within the team.
There is also a new character in Lavertey. She's going to be great. She's going to keep Bone on his toes. There's already been fireworks. She's also shown she has a human side and is feisty. I like her already and look forward to more from her.
There was also a great twist at the end. Something I wasn't expecting with what led up to it.
Am exciting and brilliant read as always and a lot more to come. Im here for it. I cant wait.

A Devil’s Share is written by TG Reid.
The title is Book #8 in the DCI Bone Scottish Crime Thriller series.
I have become addicted to this series written by Scottish author TG Reid.
Book #9, Dirt Road Dead, is scheduled to be published in 2026. That’s a long wait!
A Devil’s Share is a very tense, well-written, fast-paced plot with lots of drama, danger
and unexpected personal revelations for DCI Duncan Bone.
The characters are superbly drawn and several face life-threatening situations.
Of course, the Scottish locations vie for major character status.
One of the best series I have read in a long time. Highly recommended. A must-read.

Book 5 DCI Bone

I have read and enjoyed a couple of the early books. I fancied trying an audiobook version read by Steve Worsley I wasn’t disappointed he does a good job.

Here the team are investigating a poisoning at a Scottish whiskey distillery. There’s plenty of secrets to be revealed by the team.

My favourite character is Mullins, who always makes me smile, especially the stories about his dad. The team dynamic works well with likeable characters. I feel that sometimes Mullins overshadows Bone.

I don’t tend to read many police procedurals these days, this has a good level of interest throughout which kept me entertained, I liked how things unfolded. The narrator added to the enjoyment, instilling tension and delivering the humour.
If you enjoy Scottish procedurals this is a series that I’d recommend.

I had this book for free

Well, here's the backside of binge-listening to a well established series: Suddenly you have caught up with the latest book and there are no more books to binge! Woe is me!! 😩

After some initial speed-bumps I wasn't particularly fond of in book 1 & 2, the series found its footing properly and has steamed ahead good and well since.

I'm very pleased I found it - plus Mullens. He might be one of my fave fictive coppers out there. I was so cranky during the book where he might have died. Like, nooo, you don't kill off the funniest character! You just don't! Please, don't do this to me! 😂💔

By now, all characters have been beat up in one way or another. The author sure likes to torment the team. (I rather approve.) 😆

Thankfully that all worked out!
And Bones didn't get blown up a second time in this book, either. 🤭

Will I show up for book #9? Hell, yes. 😁

This is another excellent addition to the DCI Bone series, one of the best in the crime fiction series. I loved the distillery setting in this one, I do enjoy a nice malt whisky! The touches of humour throughout, lighten up the plotting of family feuds, murder and the organised crime underworld. Some familiar characters and some new characters, skilfully introduced to keep the series as fresh as ever. I love Mullens and his father, the humour generated between them has me laughing out loud at times and the beautiful Scottish setting is described to perfection. Book 8 is a super, fast paced adventure of a ride which Bone fans will absolutely love. With a nice wee ending to keep us wanting to find out what is next for Bone, his team and his family.

What a series...... a small RCU team, that seems to attract the worse cases, with DC Will Harper put out of action in the initial search for clues to the killer, Mullens is on the warpath to find the aggressor, this wonderful story twists and turns involving, a distillery which is in the sights or HMRC for possible money laundering, a night club owner come loan shark come drug baron, who the Organised crime division are investigating, Bone has a red headed stalker who is leaving calling cards, and to add to that a new Dsup, who seems to undermine the team at every turn .... every page makes you want to find out the ending.. but we're made to wait!!! This is another fantastic 10/10 book .... roll on book 9

Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to listen to this ARC.

Another fantastic addition to this Scottish crime series by TH Reid featuring DCI Bone. Having recently listened to an earlier book in the series I was keen to jump back in. The plot line was believable and engaging with a hefty dose of humour which helped to lift even the more gruesome parts of the storyline.

The narration was very immersive and alongside the multi-layered storyline it was a recipe for a cracking book. I have really enjoyed the books I have read so far and will definitely continue to catch up on the previous books in the series. I chuckled when I heard my favourite ‘just a wee squirt if WD40’ made an appearance. A must read for fans of the DCI Logan series by JD Kirk.

Set in and around a distillery, many people will have heard of the Angel's share but not necessarily the Devil's share which is an apt title for the book. Bone and his team are faced with the task of finding out why family members of the distillery are dying ....or are they being killed off? In this book we don't find Bone suffering quite so much with his PTSD and Mullens' dad is being quiet for once with his dementia - until he is taken to the pub! I also liked the "Tommy" reference by Mullens to someone's partner - read the book to find out. Bone is also having to deal with a new boss which will be interesting ongoing.

Great artwork on the book cover again by Andrew Dobell

Thanks to the author for the ARC to review.

Wow, the DCI Bone series just gets better and better. This book has a complicated plot of crimes and events that swirl around each other until the exciting conclusion. As always, the police team get a little beat up but I enjoy the camaraderie and the ongoing story of their lives. A new boss joins the team and she threatens to be a monkey wrench in the smoothly running operation. DCI Bone bristles but I like his hard-hitting style and approach to the cases and the leadership of his team. The setting in Scotland is a nice bonus as are the insights into the culture and traditions, including the world of whisky in this story. I can't wait for the next exciting book.

If I could've given this 10 stars I would've done. It had gripped right from the first word, bit longer than what I normally read but then again it was a complex case but still enthralling. DS Mullens dad had me in stitches with his antics but his language doesn't improve but I don't mind the occasional swearing in a book, If it fits in with the story then so be it. Though I didn't expect the twist at the end.

Due to health reasons I'm at home most of the time so I can read or do other things but with this book I couldn't put down except for doing what I had to do if you get my meaning. If you enjoy a really good read then curl up & get comfy. Very highly recommended

Exceptional!

I was thrilled when I downloaded TG's latest book in such a powerful, enjoyable series. Very tense story with so many layers I was loathed to turn off my kindle at one in the morning. Great supportive characters and interesting situation with the new super in the department. Brilliantly written which was so funny as Mullens hilarious scene when he took his dad and friend from their care home for a quick pint, great. A surprise in store for Duncan I never expected. Five stars, FAB! Thank you, BP Sheffield.

A Devil's Share by TG Reid and narrated by Steve Worsley is the 8th book in the excellent DCI Bone Scottish Crime series and this audiobook was a cracker!!! This latest book is set among the dramatic hills and glens of Scotland's Campsie Fells and is a Scottish crime detective series that will keep you guessing right up to the nail-biting, heart-stopping climax.

A devil's Share was one of his best books and I was hooked from the very beginning till the very end.

Book 8 in the DCI Bone series, and what a belter!

A whiskey distillery tour ends in the sudden death of the tour guide from cyanide poisoning. But, he's not just the tour guide, he's one of the troubled owners. Bone and his team (including a lycra clad DS Mullens) investigate, and as they dig deeper, they uncover links to organised crime. I didn't see the twist coming, which is always great, in my opinion!

I love the characters in this book and look forward to watching the new character of DSup Laverty develop within the team. Could she spell trouble for Bone?

This book is possibly my favourite in the series so far, with the usual camaraderie and humour amongst the team. A fast-paced page turner that I couldn't put down!

I will never look at a dram of the best Malt again without thinking of this brilliant read, having been to a tasting in a distillery, Hamish sounded the best Host, I would have loved a dram with him.
This book will swirl your taste buds, not only for the Whisky, but also murder, devilish criminals, murdering gangsters ,and the excitement of the brilliant team of Police under DCI Bone.

I always enjoy DCI Bone books from this author and this one didn't let me down.
The characters are superbly drawn and I was invested in the plot from the beginning
The plot was a good one and had its twists and turns but what I enjoy more than anything are the individuals in DCI Bone's team each with defining traits. The police humour is great and made me laugh out loud. I also feel that this part of Scotland comes alive to me so thanks for the brief holiday.

Number 8 is great!

As always, DCI Bone and his team had a difficult case. A man was poisoned at his family’s distillery. There were twists and turns that kept me guessing. There was drama, danger and humor in the story. I always look forward to the new Bone book and then regret how fast it’s over! This series is excellent! Bring on number 9! Beth P.

This book fits perfectly within the Scottish crime thriller genre. From the whisky soaked Highlands to the gritty streets of Glasgow, everything about it screams classic tartan noir. If you're into authors like Ian Rankin or Stuart MacBride, this feels like it's in the same league, with its distinct edge.

Brilliant book I think this is the best one in the series so far. DCI Bone and his team work well together. I also think his new boss is going to fit in well, as for Mullens he maybe a wee bit uncouth but he’s funny and a bloody good detective. Cannot recommend this book enough.
