"I haven’t always been a writer. My parents are writers and my brother is a writer, and I resisted that as long as I could. When I was 17, I hopped in a band’s van and I went on tour for a summer, and that was it, that was what I wanted to do. I ran a record label for 10 years, a small indie punk label. I did everything in music that you can do that doesn’t involve having musical ability. Eventually the music business, probably in a similar way to comics, will just start to break your heart, and I realized one day that I kind of hated music. I was resigned to thinking, if I’m going to be involved in music forever, I’m going to hate it for the rest of my life. I just stopped. I stopped having any sort of business with music, any involvement.

I read comics my whole life, so I just naturally fell back into another medium that is marginalized and hard to make a living in."

It just keeps getting better! Arthur is the new head honcho of the biters. Zealot gets a couple of lines. The vamps want the humans to hand over Damian. WW shows up and comes up against.... Alfred, for real, the butler... Alfred! I can't say anymore, just read it!!
*bonus* a batmite short at the end!!!
Honestly, they are absolutely nailing this series.

I absolutely love how fast things are escalating and that backup story was such a nice surprise. From Barbara’s supposed assassination at Damian’s planning last issue (I still won’t believe it until I see a body), a power struggle has erupted in the vampire world. One of the leaders trying to take power is Aquaman, who has arranged for a meeting with Lois Lane (which includes her backup, steel and deadshot) to further discuss the stability of the peace treaty…one that Aquaman threatens can easily dissolve if Damian, a vampire sheltered by humans, is not brought to them in a show of solitary. A group of humans were just waiting behind the tree line if anything went south, and the three quickly meet up with them as Aquaman leaves. Even if they could catch up to Damian, there is no way Talia would let them turn him over. Is Dinah points out that there is no way Aquaman has things under control as well as he says, if Damian is out there causing problems they should let the vampires continue to rip each other apart. But Lois worries about what happens after the dust settles, who the new lord of the vampires may be and if it could get worse. Dinah is furious by this, she has been smoking the Ollie and war plan and their enemy is weak, I have to agree that the last that the should be doing is helping them.

This actually brings us to Ollie, as he is currently leading a team into Dakota City where a synthetic blood factory is setup. The team consisted of Wildcat, Zealot, Swamp thing, and killer croc. As they all enter the city Ted points out how strange it is that there is electricity, why would the vampires need that? I’m more concerned about what happened to all the metas in Dakota, but as the group begins to infiltrate the compound, setting up charges outside to blow the building up…swamp thing stops them as he senses the building is not fully of a synthetic blood, but life! The group fully infiltrate the building now, but instead of finding something like a human farm…they find rows and rows of food being grown. Why in the world would a bunch of undead need food they cannot eat? But all of these plants do remind me of one plot point left open from the last series…where’s Vampire Ivy?

There is a plot point still left very open from the last series regarding Constantine. Remember the entire group of mystics setup in the house of secrets, only for a group of mystic vampires, led by Jason Blood, to come in and…something happens. Constantine doesn’t remember, we only see the aftermath as he showed back up at the human sanctuary with his entire body burned and his memories erased. We no find John floating in the ethereal outside the house of secrets as he tries to call these memories back, even spectre calls out to him as he desperately tries to remember. But suddenly John is pulled back and into his room, as he is ripped away the voice of Doctor Fate calls out begging to be freed. And as John wakes up the image of spectre is replaced by Jason Blood who has come to give him a stern reminder about forgetting. John shouldn’t worry himself about things that should stay forgotten. John lashes out, demanding to know what they did to him. But Jason claims they saved him as they saved everyone, instead of a war that would wipe them all out they are now here and they did what must be done. Jason effortlessly slaps John across the room as a ghoulish image, someone who almost looks like Etrigan, appears in shadows before them to remind John once more to let it go. As they vanish and John is left in a destroyed room, Mary Marvel suddenly rushes in after hearing the commotion to make sure he was fine.

Last issue we met a vampire traveling the country with a baby in his arms, from New Jersey he made it all the way to Johnstown, Pennsylvania before passing out in the snow, where he was found by two humans. They figured him for dead but then heard the baby crying from inside his coat. They brought him back to their base where their doctor prepared to perform an examination on what they believed to be his corpse…but then the man woke up and stopped the doctor. He demanded to know where his daughter is, and as the doctor pointed to her crib in the corner…the doctor clicked a button to summon the others. They rushed in with their weapons drawn as the man picked up his daughter, they have to keep moving and cannot be found or they will be killed. But they know what the man is and they can’t let him take the child, she deserves to be with her own people. But the man has shown to us that he isn’t going to take her just to feast, he thanked them for the help and began to walk out the door…that’s when one human fired her crossbow to try and kill him. Thankfully, even that close, she missed and the man made a break for the window. The sunlight started to burn his skin so as he smashed the high he ripped out his mask and pulled it over, revealing this man to be none other than Mister Miracle!! No wonder he was escaping so well in the last issue. SCOTT and Baby Olivia Free!! Well I hope she is calls Olivia in this, she is at least on Ram V’s New Gods series. I wish him so well on his journey, but it makes me so worried as to what happened to Barda between series. She was fine last time we saw her.

As the story comes to an end we seek refuges in a league of shadows safe house where Alfred returns to find Talia dining. He has an update from the council after their meeting with Aquaman, he informs her of his seizure of power following Barbara’s death and his demands for Damian’s head. Talia only mentions that any demands like that will put Aquaman higher on her son’s hit list. But Alfred is worried, he killed their queen and they cannot expect them to sit by and do nothing. Talia grew angry by this sentiment and called for her guard…but instead of her guard (who almost seemed to have a court of owls mask on) walking in, his head rolled instead. From the shadows Diana stepped out, Talia stood strong to face her but even with Talia’s impressive speed Diana simply danced around her, twisted her arm, and slammed her into the table. Diana proceeded to wrap the lasso of truth around Talia who admits immediately that she has no idea where her son is…but that’s not why Diana is here. She did not come to speak but to deliver a message, the lasso suddenly tightens around Talia’s neck as Diana tosses the lasso over the wood plank in the ceiling to execute Talia as a message to her son. Alfred desperately tried to fight back to no avail, and Talia was choked out right there. Diana then turned her attention to Alfred, he made a run for the nearby vault to close himself in…but Diana busted the door open like nothing. As Alfred was thrust back he crawled for the one thing in that vault that may be able to help him, all while Diana taunted him about the ways she could kill him based on how humans killed vampires in the first series. As she finally lands on cutting him up like they did to Hal, Alfred finally goes for the thing calling to him this entire time…a green lantern ring. The moment he dons it he blasts Diana back, burning her body in the process, as he is now ready to wield the light of the lanterns. He legit might take Diana out right now. What a badass.

Which finally brings us to the pleasant surprise of the back up story, focused completely around BAT-MITE!!! Ahahaha! I read DECEASED before this series and that does feature a dreadful 5th dimensional Mxyz appearance, but I always wondered what bat-mire would be up to. We start this story by focusing on Gotham city, where one of the last humans, aptly adorned with a batman logo hat, is running from his vampire hunters. As he is cornered and seems to accept death, suddenly a giant anvil falls out of the sky to squish all the vampires, all while bat-more sits on top. He immediately apologizes to the squished vampires, he’s been away for a while and can recommend them a good chiropractor. But then bat-mite notices the blood soaked human wondering who he is. Bat-mite formerly introduces himself with a hero pose until he notices the bat logo on the man’s hat. He rushes over to introduce himself as he didn’t realize there was a new member of the bat family and he shouldn’t have assumed he would be known, lol. He asks for the man’s name, which he responds with “I’m Paul.” This catches bat-mite off guard a bit but sure thing “I’MPaul.” Now of you could just kindly direct bat-mite to the reason he is here…where’s batman, your boss? But Paul isn’t sure what this strange creature is talking about, as the vampires being to crawl out and reform…bat-mite flies off to find batman himself, leaving Paul to his doom.

Bat-more searches all of the city, we where he goes he finds things in utter disarray. But then bat-mite hears a call for help from a little girl in a construction site being cornered by two vampires. He flies down to get in the way of them, only confusing them about what a flying baby could be doing here. But the little girl simply calls for help and the ground suddenly opens up and drags the vampires onto a makeshift blender. The little girl then shifts back into her form as she is none other than clayface in disguise, as the reason behind the earth shifting suddenly flies down…none other than geo force!! He has no clue who bat-mite is, but he does have the answers bat-mite is looking for and is sorry to be the one to tell him that batman is dead. Bat-mite immediately starts to go through an identity crisis, everything he has known has been about batman and in service to him. If he’s gone what even is bat-mite anymore. Who could he be underneath all of this hero worship? Ehhh, who cares about finding that out. Who not just switch to a different idol instead, lol. Dropping the makeshift batsuit, bat-mite shifts it into a makeshift geo-force outfit to become geo-mite!! Geo-force before you turn against this little guy, think carefully…you could single handily take back the world for humanity with his power. But I just know this will end badly, lol.

Setting up the war that is coming. Some interesting things like vampires building up plants? I also really enjoyed the ending and felt scared for Alfred. Good stuff overall.

Very good

Alfred surprised me with something really cool. They need to bring him back already. He was so iconic. Don't know why they killed him off, as he is in most stuff besides the continuity. It just don't make sense. But the series is very good! Check it out!

Very good. Setting up interesting plot threads, and the final vigenette with Wonder Woman, Talia Al-Ghul and Alfred is excellent. Terrifying, tragic and trimphant at the same time. Kudos-

God this series is gorgeous looking. The art is so damn good. And it's building an interesting story without rushing. The back up feature is a great twist on established characters too.
