Mystery Matters

Rate this book
In the heart of New York's picturesque Adirondacks lies the quaint lakeside town of Lake Mohawk, a summer resort steeped in local legend. For generations, whispers have circulated about "Mokie"—a shadowy, serpentine creature said to lurk in the inky depths of the lake. It is here that Lenora Lucas and Roan Wittier were raised, their bond forged by the magic of their youth and the mysteries of the lake. Inseparable since childhood, Lenie and Roan's love burned with an intensity to match the Adirondack summers. Yet, a mysterious rift drove them apart after college.

Lenie departed for Australia, and Roan stayed in Lake Mohawk. They had always shared their respective passions—for one another and the mysteries of the world. But after a tragic breakup, neither would take the first step to reclaim the bonds of love.

10 Years later, the lazy, sunny equilibrium of the village shatters when a local student captures a startling photograph—indisputable evidence of Mokie's existence. Like a spark to kindling, the image ignites a firestorm of interest, as monster hunters, cryptozoologists, and debunkers flock to the once-sleepy town.

Amidst the chaos, a familiar face emerges—Lenora has returned from Australia carrying a haunting secret which threatens to upend Roan's world once more. Will her stunning revelation offer deliverance or devastation?

In the end, the cosmic dance of dark matter and the lake’s primordial ooze may hold the hat trick key to the truth about Mokie, Roan and Lenie. As summer fades, Lenie and Roan must confront their most profound secrets and make a heart-wrenching choice—one that will redefine their lives and their understanding of the universe itself.

Blending magical realism, romance, and literary fiction, this multi-layered love story spanning years explores the chemistry of love and the wonders of the natural world. In the mystical realm where science and legend intertwine, Mystery Matters offers an unforgettable journey into the great unknowns of our world, the stars, and the most mysterious region of all, the human heart.

Playwright/Director/Author Jocelyn Beard has been telling stories her entire life and has NEVER let the facts get in the way. Ever.

THE SEVEN TEARS marks her first offering to YA/NA fantasy and romantasy lovers. In this epic tale - the first of a series - Jocelyn was gifted the opportunity to explore several of her favorite interests: ancient folklore, the ocean depths, and PIRATES! This award-wining playwright has never had so much fun outside of a theatre as she had writing this book.

Jocelyn lives in the Harlem Valley of New York with her husband, Kevin, a pack of unmannerly Jack Russell Terriers, two slightly more mannered Border Collies, seven horses, and some highly-opinionated cats.

Mystery Matters took me on a journey I never expected - one where cryptozoology meets astrophysics, and love becomes the force that ties seemingly disparate stories together.
From the beginning, the landscape is integral to the story - a place where the lake is as mysterious as the cosmos and where local legends are revered instead of scoffed at. The choice to situate the story in the Adirondack mountains is inspired; the region's blend of rugged beauty and folklore-rich history makes it the perfect stage for a tale that dances between science and myth.
Mystery Matters stands apart from other romantic tales in its fresh thematic exploration. The main character’s journeys through rekindling lost romance interplay with their pursuits of knowledge and acknowledgment in their respective worlds, which further works to reflect the interplay between the natural world and the cosmos. The juxtaposition of astrophysics and cryptozoology creates a fascinating dynamic, highlighting how science, whether it looks to the stars or into the depths of a lake, is driven by the same insatiable curiosity about what is unseen.
This book is a love letter to the wonders of the natural world, the stars, and the human heart. For anyone looking for a romance that dares to be different, that celebrates both the mysteries of love and the cosmos, this book is an absolute must-read.
