Intimate, detailed, gory, existential horror show of one man caught up in the madness of war, in this case as a Private Soldier in the ill-fated Confederacy uprising of 1960-1965. Based on the actual war diary of Virginian John Henry Hess, Pvt. Co G, Corse's Brigade, Pickett's Division, Longstreet's Corps. The odd thing about this book is that Hess is less afraid of the enemy than he is of the smart, devious, packs of wild hogs allowing following them, watching, stalking -- waiting patiently for the nights after battles when they can strut across the battlefield eating face-first the dead and wounded left when they fell. It's a horrifying book, endorsed by no less than the late Norman Mailer.
