Riley Cruz #4

Cursed Vault

Rate this book
Stealing magical artifacts was supposed to be my golden ticket, not a death sentence.

Securing a dangerous book of spells should’ve earned me some time off and a fat bonus. I’d hoped to spend my days breaking in the new climbing wall at G.O.A.T. headquarters, hanging out with a hot alpha werewolf, and planning my next karaoke set.

Instead, the Enclave delivers a new job hunting a demon relic that got their last two thieves killed and, worse, a ten-day deadline to turn myself over to coven oversight. Before I can go artifact hunting, I’ll need to survive Martha Matthews’s quest to ruin my life. And when she teams up with Max Volkov’s old rival, more than my freedom is at stake. As if the escalating shifter attacks and coven threat weren’t bad enough, someone in Kansas City is dabbling in dangerous magic.

I have ten days to save my headquarters, find out who’s dealing in blood runes, navigate a city overrun with hostile shifters, and take down Martha Matthews.

Good thing I’m at my best with my back against the wall.

Cursed Vault is the fourth book in the Riley Cruz series about a goat shifter who steals magical artifacts. If you like fun, fast-paced urban fantasy with quirky characters and a slow-burn, opposites attract romance, this is the book for you.

HELL YESSSSS! My girl Riley is back getting into more trouble than ever, and brother am I here for it all the damn way. Once again Lisa effortlessly transports me back into Riley's world making it seem like I've never been away while keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. And let's talk about all the feels this author gave me in this lastest installment, from the utmost anger and contempt to joy, tears of happiness and laughter (lots and lots of laughter). Yes she expertly played my feelings like Nash plucking the strings of his guitar and it was glorious. I just can't get enough of this series or Riley who is guaranteed to put a smile on my face every time. And after binging it all in one sitting, I'm back to my vigil of waiting with baited breath for book 5... Freaking fantastic 😍

After her last job, Riley was hoping for some well earned time off and to be with her smoking hot Alpha boyfriend Max. Instead, she is given a new job by the Enclave to hunt down a demon relic which got their last two artifact hunters killed. If that's not bad enough she is told to hand herself over to the coven in ten days time to submit to training and supervision. Riley finds that avoiding Martha Matthews has become a quest in itself as the coven head has made it her mission to ruin her life, and when Martha teams up with Max's old rival things go from bad to worse. And along with Riley's discovery that someone is dabbling in the art of blood runes, the situation has become even more deadly.

Riley the goat shifter who marches to the beat of her own drum, captured my heart from her first appearance in Kali's series and from there my fangirling only grew stronger. After being under the thumb of a brutal alpha as a child her biggest fear is to be 'made' to conform to authority, where her life is no longer her own and to follow the will of others. So when the Enclave order her to turn herself over to the coven for supervision Riley sees it for what it is, control of her life which puts her into a state of panic. Making matters worse is the smug witch Martha, who has wanted control of Riley since the last book also wants to take her business away that she has worked tooth and nail for. (Yeah I had a few choice names I called her in my head I can tell you). But I knew my girl wouldn't take this laying down, in fact she comes back swinging harder than ever. And the best of it, she doesn't have to do it alone because her chosen family will do everything in their power to help keep her safe and keep her free. Watching Riley grow throughout these books has been such a joy to behold, and when she declares five magical words I swear my heart skipped a beat. I love this character to the moon and back and I don't care who knows it.

Oh my god how I've come to love Max. Bad ass alpha he is, but when it comes to Riley the man has a ooey gooey centre. He still has the patience of a toddler when dealing with other people just ask Dez, but this incredibly adorable alpha has definitely become less uptight and rigid (unless it involves gummy bears ) around the woman he loves. And when he uttered these word to Riley "I'll fight every damn day to change this world into one that is worthy of you". You can bet your sweet butt the floodgates opened, and I handed my heart to him then and there, forever more.

Dez my nerdy tech vampire really had me in fits of giggles, from his priceless housewarming gift for Riley (which had me howling with laughter) to his snarky banter with Max. And don't get me started on the paperwork war he declares on Martha, just remind me never to upset him 🤣

To say I loved this is an understatement and I'm looking forward to the next one with the highest of anticipation. So if you love a good Urban Fantasy, goat shifters with attitude, vampires with a paperwork vendetta and found family vibes go pick this up today. You'll thank me later. Highly recommend 😁

I’ve been thinking about authors a lot lately to see where they fit in my order of preference. This author is definitely in my top 20, and this latest is a reason why. We are back in Riley’s world, and I wish there were so many more books I could devour! But anyway, she is being targeted by Morgan, and her crew must find a way to protect her. Meanwhile, Volkov is hosting a shifter summit, and it’s going as well as you’d expect. I loved this book because it’s well-written, we get to see so much love between the characters, it’s fun, and I just adore all the characters. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that Riley didn’t shift into her goat! LOL! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This one is a barn burner!

The latest Riley Cruz book starts off slowly but by the second paragraph I dare you to put it down (hahaha, see what I did there?). Riley has a new HQ for the gang but Coven Head Martha has some tricks up her sleeve and has convinced the council that Riley needs her supervision. And to top it off Martha is also gumming to purchase her new HQ for herself. Over her dead body. Her boyfriend Max has his own problems as he is hosting all the shifter leaders this year and his hated foe will be there. The Enclave also has a job for Riley which opens old wounds which include her mother. Trials, tribulations and machinations abound as the gang thwarts the baddies at every turn but will Riley come out unscathed? This will be her toughest battle yet.

With every new book in this series I love Riley more and want her Stitch Witches as my back-up/support group!
Riley is always so optimistic and will do anything for her friends and the stitch witches are so incredibly supportive of her, they will always have her back and totally prove this when things get tough.
And what can I say about Max? I am loving watching their relationship develop and the revelation that he makes in this book is stunning, heart-warming and beautiful.
Can't wait to see what happens next for Riley and her gang.

that is the most frustrating cliff hanger of all time

Aaah! These books are all addictive. Sucked in, totally immersed and hit a brick wall so many tantalising story lines open.
More please. Today would be good.

This line from the musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, comes to mind when I think of Riley, "From the day (s)he was born, he was trouble" Ok, so not "the day she was born" but the day I first met her in the Kali James series, and not trouble as in a problem, BUT the trouble she caused my heart to go through! She annihilated, decimated, shredded my heart like few characters have. I was raw from the emotional turmoil I experienced together with Riley, every ill deed, every scar she carried, I took on. So perhaps I should say, "Ms McBride annihilated, decimated and shredded my heart" because twas she who brought this incredible character to life! Either way, I was hooked on Riley and Lisa from the onset....

Riley is so different, so unique, so magnificent a character, I honestly can't get enough of her. This is a girl who's been through the mill, both ways, and come out whole. This is a girl who lived in fear, this is a girl who couldn't put down roots, this is a girl who had little to no friends...Is your heart churning already? Well... THIS is a girl who has grown exponentially into a sassy, badassed, fiercely independent woman, with new friends, with a new beginning, a new love...ok, you can sigh with relief here. She has the most amazing witches as "family", all of whom I adore, all very quirky and extremely fun. The rest of her family is just as amazeballs, she has her awesome bff Kali, she has the beautiful souled Dez, she has the slightly whacky Nash she has the yummy yum yum Max as her boyfriend and she even has her own business! And then THE b*tch witch comes and wants to take it all away. Grrrrrr!!!! She's like a pimple that keeps popping up no matter how many times you squeeze it, just as yucky!

Max, oh glory is Max heavenly! He might be the toughest alpha on the planet but around Riley, for Riley, he's a squishy marshmallow! That man has the morals of a saint, the honourably of the Pope the reputation of an ogre! Yep, he'll fight tooth and nail for what he believes in and that, dear friends, is the right to independence. No risk is too high, no object too large, in his quest to protect not only the one he loves but all others in a similar situation. That love is Riley, that situation is outdated practices which forces shifters, witches, vamps or any supernaturals to conform, to join a pack or coven even if they don't want one. To be at the mercy of a "head" is justifiable vile for Riley. After what she'd been through before, the fear runs deep, the panic is all encompassing, hells, she can't even accept "belonging" to Max's pack as a safeguard against an abusive system. He doesn't push, he doesn't force, he's doesn't cojole, he supports, he protects, he loved with every fibre of his being. Flip, when he says these words to Riley, I swear I melted into a puddle! "I'll fight every damn day to change this world into one that is worthy of you". He's just dreamy....

How incredibly exciting Ms McBride makes every book, how immensely talented she is in her storytelling, bringing in surprise after surprise, all the while compelling, gripping me in the tension and mystique of why and what. Why does a scumbag have it in for Riley and Max? What does this scumbag hope to achieve? The same applies to the b*tch witch ....The way it unfolds, what was uncovered is convoluted corruption, and it's the exposing of it that is so thrilling and pulse racing. It's the characters that stand out though, not just the marvellous fast paced plot, Ms McBride polished characters, perfectly flawed, perfectly loveable, there's even the most magnificent rooster called Garth, who isn't an ordinary rooster, heck, when he let's loose the safest thing to do is run! He's super cool and super protective and he can even communicate! Yep, Ms McBride sure knows how to engage a reader! But the coolest? Oh boy, that was when Riley let her guard down, when she finally, finally got to admit IT, I could have cried with joy! The IT is something you'll have to experience yourself, I don't kiss and tell! What I will tell is that each time I read a Lisa McBride book I'm left wanting more, oh so much more of her brilliance!

**ARC READER - All opinions are my own!**

Riley has been working hard to get past her time under Carl’s thumb in the Santa Fe pack. Since then she’s moved to KC, MO, made friends, found family, and built up her circle of trust with amazing people who absolutely have her back. Her relationship with Max Volkov has grown to be one of fully-fledged love, and she and her crew are seeking out demon artifacts for the Enclave regularly, expenses paid, and rewards on delivery.

Life’s been pretty good for Riley, especially since settling things with Carl’s pack and putting some solid protection on her crewmate Nash, the only mortal in the bunch. Between overhauling the G.O.A.T. crew’s new headquarters into a thing of beauty as well as her personal living space, things are looking up for the little goat shifter. Never mind that it’s now been ordered both by the witches council and the Enclave that Riley join a coven, something she’s avoided like the plague. Never mind that the local coven overlord has an OBVIOUS ulterior motive…

“Cursed Vault” is the fourth novel in the Riley Cruz spin-off series from the award-winning Kali James series by L. A. McBride. It lives in the same world as Kali James and features a new perspective on characters fans already know and love. It also allows readers to see more of events that may have been only briefly mentioned in the OG series, which is an absolute treat! The hits keep on coming, and the humor is on point! The settings are rich, the characters dynamic, the action keeps coming, the burn is slow, hot, and steamy, and the book is unputdownable! I highly recommend this book and look forward to Riley’s continuing solo series! And if audiobooks are your jam, all four books in the series, including this one, are BEAUTIFULLY narrated by the ever-talented Maria McCann!!

I received a free copy of this e-book and audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

If there is anyone who knows about "going rogue", it would be Riley Cruz--a young goat shifter in a world of wolves. She doesn't let ANY alpha boss her around...except maybe one, when they are in private...
While most of Riley's adventures focus more directly on her jobs hunting demon artifacts for the Enclave, in this book, the job takes a bit of a backseat to events happening closer to home. She has finally gotten her G.O.A.T. headquarters (and her personal living space) renovated just the way she has always dreamed of having it, and is excited to relax for a little while with her closest friends (who double as her heist crew). Unfortunately a former Kansas City wannabe alpha and the High Priestess of the local witch coven both have other ideas for her. Thankfully, Riley's crew always has her back, and together they are able to put together the pieces of who is attacking local shifters, while trying to find a way to keep the High Priestess Martha from stealing Riley's home from under her and confining her to coven rules and restraints, as well as discovering clues about the bombing that took Riley's apartment from her in the first place.
There is also a relationship "drama bomb" between Max and Riley! 😱🤯
As usual, the side characters steal the show in this one: The Stitch Witches are up to their usual #chaosandshenanery (think the Golden Girls, but with magic) and Garth the rooster learns some sweet dance moves! Nash and his guitar get everyone tongue-tied. And Dez...well, he is just as nerdy and lovable as ever. 🧡🧛🤓
On one hand, I can't WAIT for the final book to come out on audio, but at the same time, I am going to be sooooo sad when Riley's arc is over.

Riley is currently my favorite character to read!

As the only goat shifter (that she knows of) in a world of were-predators she has to be on her toes (hooves whatever). As an Enclave hired thief, she has to be better than anyone at her job, and as a witch hybrid, she has to toe the line with the local coven.

However, being a goat, she often chooses chaos and anarchy and it works for her. Martha, the leader of the local coven knows something about Riley, what no one is sure, but it's enough she'll do everything in her power to get Riley under her control. This doesn't work for Riley, or the four elder witches that adopted her as a teen on the run.

Luckily, they also love a little chaos and anarchy, and they have years under their belts coming up with ways to make the local coven leader pay. It finally comes to a hilarious head in this book. On top of those issues, it's the shifter summit, and her tightly laced, ultimate "I must be in control" alpha wolf boyfriend is in charge for this one.

Now Riley also has to deal with pack politics to help him out, and she does not and will not do pack ever again. To add more on her plate, the enclave wants her to go after a new prize, and it's personal and could give her answers about her past.

If you love fast paced urban fantasy with hilarious antics, vampires, shifters, and witches this is the series for you. I can't ever put one down, and I am always sad when they end! Pick up this series today, you will not be disappointed!

After earning a substantial paycheck on her last job for the Enclave, Riley has spent the time renovating a warehouse to be her new headquarters. As she is having a reveal party, Martha, the head of the local witch’s coven, shows up with a notice that Riley has ten days before she must report to the coven for evaluation and training. Riley is not planning on doing that, there is no way she wants them to know that her power is to null magic.
To top off the coven problem, Martha also claims that she is buying the warehouse from the party Riley leases it from. Then they find out that the current owner is the alpha that Max defeated to claim his spot.
Something is going on that has to be figured out. All of this is happening while there is an alpha convention being held by Max. then she is contacted by the Enclave with another job, this one has a bit of a twist, the last person to try for the missing artifact was Riley’s mother who managed to hide the item in question. Clues are left in a letter to Riley that she must figure out.
There is a lot happening in this book, bombs, mystery burglars, questions on who is doing what and why.
This book has action, some mystery, suspense, surprises, and humour. Garth the demon possessed rooster is at his best.
I just love the Riley Cruz books but I hate having to wait for the next installment. Mind you, as soon as it’s out I will pretty much read it immediately.

This was another great read in this series with so many hilarious bits as well. I could hardly put it down!

Having just completed one job for the Enclave, Riley should be enjoying a bit of downtime, renovating her new headquarters/home, but Martha the high priestess of the local coven will stop at nothing to get her hands on Riley. Why we don't yet know, but Martha obviously has something up her sleeve and will do whatever it takes to bring Riley under her control, even joining with a purist werewolf beta who wants to stir up even more trouble for Max. Does she know more about Riley's powers than even Riley does? If so, how?

Luckily for Riley she has a great group of witch friends, family really, who will do anything they can to stop Martha and some of their antics for "little old women" were downright hilarious and just plain naughty! She also has an amazingly hot alpha, who would walk the ends of the Earth for her too. I love how Max and Riley have grown together and their shocking secret was not expected just yet!

Although the Enclave have another job lined up for Riley and her team to find and retrieve yet another demon artefact, this one came with a few more surprises for Riley. I am so hoping that more on these will be revealed in the next book!

I can't wait to read the next book and see what happened with that cliffhanger! I did squeal a bit when I read those last few words!

I had such a great time with this book! While it’s less action-packed than previous installments, the focus on character and relationship development made it an absolute joy to read—and I loved every moment of it.

Max and Riley’s relationship truly takes center stage here, with beautifully written moments that fully solidify their bond. But what makes this book even more special is how it highlights the entire gang. Every single character, from Helen to Garth, fights for Riley in their own way, reinforcing the powerful found-family dynamic that this series does so well.

There’s also something deeply satisfying about seeing the bad guys get exactly what they deserve. This book provides closure for some lingering storylines while also introducing new layers and fresh intrigue for what’s to come. I can’t wait for Riley & Co.’s next adventure—bring it on!

Riley is my favourite character in the author’s world. She’s smart, independent, sassy and doesn’t take any garbage from anyone. All of the Riley Cruz books are just fun to read to see what trouble she gets herself into (and out of). She has depth of character and you’ll cheer for her and empathize with her as she moves through the story.

This was a fun read and moved at a fast pace. There was so much to unpack in this book with multiple plot lines. It brought in characters you know, characters whose names you’ll recognize and characters that have been secondary in her other stories. I always look forward to the next Riley Cruz story and this one is no different. The next book in this series can’t arrive soon enough (especially since it left a couple of main plot lines to be discovered in the next book). If I could, I’d give this book a 7, but I have to settle for a 5/5.

"𝐵𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑦 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑚𝑒𝑛 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑚𝑒."

Do you ever read a book where you rush to the end, but once you get there, you wish it had never ended? Yeah, that was this book. It makes me want to pick up book one and start reading the whole series over again.

I loved everything about this novel, but the tender moments between Riley and Max were my favorite. Well, and of course, the scenes with the Stitch Witches. And when Garth goes ballistic. And Dex hacking into Martha's bank accounts. And Teagan looking at noses (IYKYK).

Okay, so I loved everything between the covers of this book, and I cannot wait to see what McBride has in store for these characters next! June can't come soon enough!

Fast paced but feels more filler than story

Riley's series, in my opinion, is much better than Kali's portion of the story but this particular book feels more like a filler or bridge than it's own standalone part of the series. I love Riley and Max as a thing. I adore Riley building a home and Bennie, Dez and Nash being big brother/bestie energy. I adore the humor and Riley's strength and love. The story was just a bit too simple. It is a very well paced, fast paced book with good info to spring us into the last of the series but the 3 month wait for the ending is feeling too long if it's another less interesting installment like this book

Oh, how I love hanging out in Riley's world! She has rapidly become one of my absolute favorite protagonists. A goat shifter who loves her friends and snacks, fights through panic while appearing to be a total badass; her sense of humor and depth of emotion, the found family she has collected, and the amazing stories circling around her make her irresistible. Also: GOAT SHIFTER. My favorite shifter ever. These characters are so well-written, even the unlikable ones. They feel so real and they grow and open up as the books go on. While this book could be read and enjoyed on its own, I don't want anyone to miss a single moment of Riley time.

I continue to be delighted with this author's series, and each Riley book offers us more surprising information about her and her origins. What we learned in this installment was unexpected, and we are getting closer and closer to the truth.

Riley grows with each book, and her heart and kindness remain unchanged, as does the strength with which she faces her adversaries. She is afraid, but she has learned to bury her fear so that others cannot take advantage of her.

What I liked most is that she has acknowledged her relationship with Max, and I can't wait to see how all the questions in this book are resolved and what new revelations the author has in store for us.

Riley and Max are back along with Kali, Dez, Helen and the girls and everyone else including the demonic chicken. Now Riley has a newly remodeled headquarters and is awaiting the Enclave's decision. While resisting Martha's control, Riley and company are assigned to find and steal a magical vessel that can bring doom. It's another shifter contest/ magical confrontation for your favorite pink haired goat shifter. Riley also finds out more about her ties to Max. I love this group! I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

I enjoy Riley and her team/family dynamics. A few previous storylines are completed in this book. You'll also get to see some character and relationship development as the gang makes some important decisions that will be in effect for a while. Riley also makes a big decision about Max and their relationship. Past family drama is brought to light in ways that will definitely shape the next few books in the series. This continues to be a very fun and innovative series. I mean, who else has a goat shifter?

Martha, Magic, and Mates, oh my! This book continues the Riley storyline and just keeps getting better and better! Trouble always seems to find Riley but her antics are her saving grace! Plus, having the demon infested Rooster along for the ride always makes for a good time. Her Stitch-Witch friends are the kind of woman *I* want to be when I get old!!!!

If you haven't read the rest, definitely go back and start from book 1! It's ok if you haven't read the first 3 in the Universe series but don't skip out on Riley! <3

Ooh that Martha is a nasty piece of work. It was so frustrating to see how much power lies with the individuals in charge (like alphas and coven high priestess) that is misused to control and dominate others within the current power structure and laws. So yay Max. And I was cheering for Riley and her witches as they take on the establishment. And double yay for declarations! IYKYK and if you don't - read it! As always I delighted in Riley's enthusiasm and was laughing out loud at her gleeful bathroom tour with Max.

I gave this book 4 stars because, for me, it ends on a cliff hanger. It just felt incomplete. The usual characters we love in the Riley Cruz books are around, and new characters we love to hate make an appearance. How the crew gets around the bad guys is very entertaining. I’m very happy I read this Advanced Readers Copy and am looking forward eagerly for the next installment. It can’t come soon enough for me.

Riley has friends, enemies beware

Riley has a team and more importantly they’re friends so when the coven comes calling forcing supervision friends rally.

Max has his own foe to diminish but the foe is prodding the wrong wolf with a goat who doesn’t know how to back down.

An enthralling read that once you start you can’t but continue straight on until the end. Thoroughly enjoyed all the characters on team Riley and can’t wait for more.

Poor Riley things just keep piling on top of her and now she awaits to discover if she is forced to join Martha’s coven. Her usual sass is ever present and the gang is there with her every step of the way. I was mildly disappointed that we didn’t get to the Cursed Vault within this book but will be hanging out for the next instalment! This is a fun urban supernatural series for anyone who enjoys strong FMC with a side of mystery and intrigue - highly recommend.

Riley is really on to something here! She senses that things are just not right with the Witch Coven, as well as some bad vibes about the Pack and the big gathering that was happening. Well she was right after all. Riley did what she does and eventually figured out what she needed to and gave Martha what she deserved. The whole gang came out fine, and I LOVED IT!!! I Highly Recommend!! No Spoilers!

This series just gets better and better! Riley is trying to escape being turned over to the coven for assessment and naturally this includes a little breaking and entering. Sato drops a bomb for Riley and the fallout is an emotional one. She has a fire in belly and takes it all in her stride with a feisty flare that I adore! The stitch witches are just hilarious, Bea making inappropriate comments had me absolutely howling! Top tier Urban Fantasy!

I love the Riley Cruz series and this was another great entry. This one didn’t have a heist which I did miss but it still had an interesting storyline. It focused more on getting Riley out of the coven and the nefarious plots of Martha. Fun as always and with all of the characters we have come to love in the series. Looking forward to more!

what?????

What????? Noooooooooo. That can’t be it. This is a series and you gotta read the other ones first … and the rest after this. Because, damn, this is goooooooood! Riley is the G.O.A.T. - I’m so funny. And Max, sigh. All the cast and characters are so well developed. The story is fast paced and I’m so invested. Can you tell? I think you can tell.

The new and improved (rebuilt) HQ for the gang is done and Riley and the gang have a new job from the Enclave, that has some major triggers for Riley. Riley's hot Alpha, Max, is hosting a conference of Alpha shifters and very few friends are counted among them. Pack businesses and non-wolf members are being targeted with hate crimes. All that, and Coven Head Martha is out for not just Riley but her new HQ too.

This was an action packed, and frequently edge of the seat, thrill ride, with such a satisfying conclusion. McBride delivered another fabulous addition to the series. I am already anxiously awaiting the next one, but I'll buy this again when it comes out in audio, just to revisit it again. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the Riley Cruz series.
