I am very conflicted with this one.

I was very excited for this collection after it was announced as part of the DC Finest line. I love Oracle in this era of The Birds of Prey, love Tim Drake in Young Justice around this time, and Stephanie Brown's Batgirl run that succeeded this one is incredible.

But this series was just... okay? And that's about it. The art is all well done, depicting combat much better than most comic artists, but the writing is severely lacking. Over 22 issues, there is barely any plot throughline, with most issues having nearly self-contained stories that feel really similar to each other. Cassandra works best with another character to bounce off of, but without that, her nearly dialogless character lacks a lot of depth. With Cassandra being such a powerful fighter, the writer seems unsure of how to give her a physical challenge, resulting in her being shot at least 3 separate times. The collection isn't helped by 6 of the 22 issues being team-ups or tie-ins to events, making reading them all in a row very disjointed and unsatisfying.

Batman also feels severely mischaracterized in this run, feeling closer to All-Star Batman. He talks about Cassandra as if she were a soldier, uninterested in whether she has any sort of social interaction outside of beating up criminals, or even if she has an identity at all.

I'm going to continue the run if they put out any more collections, because I still did enjoy reading it, I was just expecting so much more. If you are considering reading this one, I would recommend checking out Birds of Prey or the 2009 Batgirl run first.

This is one of the best collections of stories I've ever read! Cassandra had the most compelling and inspiring story in all of the Bat-Family

The start of the Cassandra Cain Batgirl run this is now my favorite version of the character. The story and art are fast paced from her partnering with Tim Drake, training under Batman, and her confrontation with Shiva. The action is top tier. Covers 2000/2002.

Who is Cassandra Cain? She's the best Batgirl, and it's not even close! To many Barbara is "the" Batgirl, and while that's true to an extent. Barbara to me is much more compelling as her oracle persona, and not so much Batgirl (aside from a couple stories). Puckett does a great job at bringing new readers up to speed on Cassandra, and getting the readers endeared to her. The way Puckett does this is in Cassandra's little character quirks such as, her inability to read, and her limited speech. This lends to some funny moments, but also really makes you care about what Cassandra says-as each word has that much more meaning.

All the action in this run is top notch, and it's great that Cassandra is already incredibly smart, and skilled. You don't have the trope of the hero making a ton of mistakes, and sucking at being a hero. While the overarching narrative wasn't anything crazy, I still enjoyed the stories in each issue. They were great at giving Cassandra something new to overcome as Batgirl, her learning to do things differently, and just giving her great character development.

Overall really liked this! Excited to read more Cassandra stories.

I'd enjoyed reading the Silent Knight thick trade so decided to pick this one up. We miss the first arc that sets up her special ability but I think it was a good idea to have the whole of the Shiva arc in one volume.

This series feels so much like a manga to me due to the style of the artwork and it not being as dialogue heavy as many comic books. It made for a very quick and fun read. I feel one does get a good feel for the character despite it being more action oriented.

I thought the event tie-in issues were accessible on their own, though I am curious about the events now and in particular the Batman run of this time; I think this also coincides with Gotham Central that I really loved.

Overall a great read and I'm looking forward to checking out the previous and subsequent volumes when they are published!

I always loved cass, I never read much stories with her. but this book made me fall in love with her. Each issue tell an engaging story using only 20-30 pages, a feat that many comics struggle with. I picked up a random issue at a con (issue 16), I was blown away at the story writing and dedicated my life to collecting more. If you are a batfam lover and don’t have this book, you are do yourself a disservice

Damn. This was so good. I didn’t have any issue with Cass in birds of prey- but now I can say I can fully appreciate why people were pissed off by her characterization (it’s just not her).

Puckett and co really deliver on not only a thematically deep and interesting new narrative for Gotham- but also display a great understanding for how to make the city stand out visually. This is leagues beyond the miller run on Steph, and I loved the focus on street level crime.

I had middling expectations for this, and it outperformed them. The DC Finest format delivers a thick chunk of stories in a single volume, which with overly formulaic and repetitive Silver Age material can be enervating, but with continuity-heavy comics is a satisfying long read. This is material that I don't regret missing the first time it came out, and I don't regret reading this time around.

This Batgirl doesn't speak much, so this is a fast read with lots of big panels and enthusiastic fighting. I've enjoyed Cassandra Cain in the background of modern Batman stories, but this is the first I've read of the bulk of her solo series, and I can see why she's such a beloved early-2000s character and remains popular today.

My goat Cassandra Cain, per usual, is going through hell and back just to prove herself. I enjoyed how they included different issues outside the main series, added more perspective of the character and made me understand her on a deeper level.

A handful of pretty good stories are contained in this volume but overall felt the tone and plot was uneven and underdeveloped. Quick read but nothing special
