Vug Ugly

Rate this book
Aided by temperamental witches, spooked by eminent ghosts, and tormented by his enemies, a determined young man searches for his missing dad.

In present-day Britain, eighteen-year-old Marcus Ennor hears whispers on the breeze. He learns that he is an Especial – a gift that is useful as well as disturbing.

To find his dad, Marcus turns to some touchy witches for help. They point him in the direction of the Accord – a company of ghostly warriors from centuries past. Marcus soon finds out that nothing comes free when dealing with the supernatural.

Marcus’s embittered rival, Tully Trenchard, receives an offer from the duke he cannot refuse: spy on Marcus and sabotage his plans. The rewards give Tully’s mundane life a boost. He even has his sight on the Ennor Estate.

Marcus and his trusted friends experience fun and disappointment, challenges and surprises as they travel through the beautiful and formidable landscape. From the warmth of a sun-filled beach to the frostiness of his local pub – the Vug Ugly, through bone-chilling misty seas and snow-covered moorland, the group face unnatural storms and unruly enemies as they search.

Seekers by Janette Berry is a decent read with beautiful written settings. The descriptions paint a vivid image of the beauty of rural England. The book however suffers greatly from a mixture of slow plot till around page 150, some flat dialogue, and confusing subplots. In the beginning you think the book to be a coming of age mystery then supernatural elements enter without much explanations. In this alternate England is magic just part of everyday life? It need to be explained. As for the subplot of Trevor and Wiggles they didn't add much to the story to my taste. Tully and Julian were much more interesting of characters than those two. If the magic was better intergeated like the witches being a secret covent or it stated as magic being opening excepted I'd have been happier and much less confused. After page 200 the story really begins to take hold, you just have to stick it out till then.
