About the author

Bluey is a 6 year old Blue Heeler pup who loves to play. Her parents and teacher give her lots of time to practice, which means she’s become very good at inventing games, helping everyone choose their roles and deciding on the rules. Her favourite games are ones that involve lots of other kids and grown-ups (especially her dad) and she mainly likes to pretend she’s a grown up doing grownup things herself.

Bluey is an Australian children's television program by the Emmy award-winning Ludo Studio for ABC KIDS and is co-commissioned by ABC Children's and BBC Studios.

I always make it a point to pre-read every book before I read it out loud to my son, and after sitting down with this one, I’ve decided it isn't quite the right fit for our storytime.

From my perspective as an adult, I have to admit that this story is hilarious. The chaos and the cheeky personas are genuinely funny when you view them through an older lens. However, as a parent, I’m careful about what I introduce to my son. Since I don’t have him watch the show, I find the book models a lot of naughty behavior that I’m not ready for him to mimic. The characters are quite sassy and disruptive, which can be a bit much for a young child who is still learning the basics of boundaries and respect.

I also had some reservations about the character dynamics. The story introduces themes of romance and marriage between the characters in a way that felt a bit unnecessary and abstract for his current age. I prefer choosing books that feel more grounded and gentle. While I can appreciate the humor myself, I’ll be sticking to stories that focus more on the simple, soulful moments of childhood for our shared reading time.

This was a great first chapter book. I think this book would be familiar enough so that a reader who is not confident could still make their way through it and enjoy it! This was a library summer program prize pick by my seven year old.

Absolutely hilarious. This early chapter book has great vocabulary, a delightful narrative voice, and fun illustrations. Also, this isn't just a novelization of the bus episode from Bluey. This tells the story they were acting out, and it includes the main character's thoughts. This is so hilarious and clever!
