The second novel in the Secrets of the Zodiac, a series that blends romantic suspense with the rich background of the Regency period.

A seductive agent, a disillusioned lord, and a web of deceit only they can untangle...

Sophie Bertrand is skilled in acting, espionage, and the subtle art of seduction. An independent spirit, she fought her way from rough streets to the top secret circle of spies known as the Zodiac. Her newest assignment is one of her most delicate yet: hunt down a traitor within Britain's own government. But there's a catch...this time she can't work alone.

Bruce Allander has a title, honor, wealth...but he'd trade it all to restore his family. The Zodiac gives him a chance for justice in a world that's already taken too much from him. Now he finds himself close to this captivating Frenchwoman--possibly too close. Sophie defies all his expectations, yet in her he senses a kindred soul.

Passion draws the two together, but a web of betrayals threatens to tear them apart. To survive, they have to trust each other. They have to be a little reckless...

Great Spy Story, Fantastic Narration by Marian Hussey! (audible review)

I really enjoyed this book. The hero and heroine, Bruce and Sophie, started out a bit combative but not for too long. They ended up making a great spy couple. Bruce was strong, smart, and well developed. Sophie was a spitfire and a very good spy. They had some great chemistry together and there is one mildly written sex scene. The relationship grew between the two and felt real and genuine.

The story line and plot was very good. I enjoyed the espionage and secret identities, the then you have a villain of course. Made for a great story and plot for sure. There is a lot of dialogue throughout the entire book, I love lots of dialogue.

As for the narration, it was fantastic! Marian Hussey is a super narrator. Especially for this genre. The men sound like men and the hero sounds sexy. All the characters get their own distinct voice so you know who is speaking. She gives all the servants that cockney accent which sounds so real. She reads with emotion and has a very nice reading voice. She truly one of my favorite narrators! Excellent performance Marian Hussey you made a good book even better! Thank you.

I read the first of the series and loved it! So I bought this book and really looked forward to reading it. I started out and it just did not click with me. I don't usually care for the independent I can do it on my own for the H/H. It just went down hill from there. I found the plot a little hard to believe but the foundation was there for a good read. I thought the details added to length but not to the story. I will read the next in the series.

I was given this book, by the author for an honest review.

I went into this book blind. I had no idea what it was about, since its not up for preorder, or on goodreads just yet, so I was a little wary. However, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Sophie is a spy, the only female member of an organisation called Zodiac. she works alone, has never worked with other team members and likes it that way. she is also a Frenchwoman living in England, post French Revolution.

Bruce is a Lord of the Manor, who likes to get his hands dirty, doing what needs to be done on the estate. He is also a member of Zodiac, a loner, and not used to working with other team members.

When Aries puts them together to complete a mission that could turn deadly, sparks fly, and they learn just how much they need each other. But when Bruce is captured, and tortured, he comes to believe all sorts of things about Sophie, and she sets off to correct those things, putting her life in danger.

Having read A voice At Midnight, I thought I knew Cole's style of writing but this is much different. the general plot line is deep and dark, it moves at speed in places and slower in others, keeping you on your toes. some French Revolution history involved, but not told in a "teaching" kind of way. it is also somewhat saucier than Midnight. Not explicit, at all, but much more detailed than the other book. I loved that. the way Sophie and Bruce come to rely on each other, in their given roles, and as them selves was beautifully written, and it draws you into their world, their feelings, emotions, and just how far they might have go to get out of the situation they find themselves in. I liked how it wasn't til the traitor was revealed, that I didn't click who it was. sometimes you just know, I didn't.

Set in 1804, it is an historical romance, and comes with all the rules and regulations of the time, some which are just laughable these days, but also the words of the time are used, keeping true to the genre. this is also the second in a series, and some of the tale of the first book is in this one, at some point I will go back and read that book, as I would like to know more.

This book is one of my favorites! I have read all of Elizabeth Cole’s books and not only this the best in the fantastic “Secrets of the Zodiac” series, but it is probably my favorite of all of her books.
Sophie is the most kick ass Lady Spy since Alias! Imagine Sydney Bristow in Regency England!

description

Cole’s writing techniques are at her best here. Just the detail she employs to describe their bedrooms gives you the perfect glimpse into Sophie and Bruce’s personalities and how opposite they are, such clever writing. I loved reading about Sophie and her tragic past surviving the French Revolution and so much more. She was such a well-developed character.

description

There were a couple of times where I was hoping the plot was going to go in a slightly different direction but I'm not an author and must be satisfied with Ms. Cole’s telling of her story. Bruce was a strong character, but it was hard to compete with Sophie’s awesomeness!
I recommend this book if you love regency, romance, suspense, and intrigue.

Having read Elizabeth’s Cole’s A Heartless Design, the first book in the series, which I LOVED, I had high expectations of this book, the second in the series. I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed and I ADORED this read!

To secure the evidence for a traitor in the British government, the Zodiac agents in this novel must impersonate another couple at a house party hosted by a Frenchman of questionable morals. Although both agents, Sophie and Bruce, prefer to work alone, with the safety of the country on the line the stakes are high and they must put their personal prejudices aside to fulfil their mission’s objectives. Their mission is fraught with danger and deceit and the author once again weaves an inventive plot containing strong male and female leads and credible adversaries. If you like suspense with your Regency romance, complete with lashings of danger, sexy scenes and characters who turn the rules of the establishment on its head, than this series is for you.

The hero and the heroine in this novel are fascinating characters. Sophie, as Libra, the only female agent, is far from your usual simpering Regency miss. She is an independent woman, skilled in the art of seduction and disguise. She prides herself on the success of her missions and uses her body and mind to reach her goals, taking advantage of opportunities as they arise. Her life is totally devoted to her work for the Zodiac, the organisation whose agents commit their very lives to protect the safety of the realm. Sophie has a low opinion of men in general and includes Bruce in this category after sparks fly at their initial meetings. Despite this, she is attracted to him and throughout their mission, where they are compelled to work very closely together, finds it increasingly difficult to maintain her usual emotional distance.

Bruce, agent Scorpio, is a Viscount. He is a lonely man, his parents are both deceased and his brother is estranged. As the eldest son he knows that he will have to continue the family line one day but not whilst he is working as an agent. In contrast to Sophie, he takes great care to plan his mission down to the last detail. He is not happy at all with Sophie’s approach of seizing the initiative, believing it is risky, although he does acknowledge her many skills, particularly in the art of seduction…… Bruce is both attracted to and confounded by Sophie, torn between protecting her and strangling her! He also begins to question whether or not he can trust her given the fact that she is French and could be working for the enemy as a double agent……

When this couple are not performing their assigned roles they are either involved in a heated exchange or trying to fight their feelings for each other. The sexual tension between them is high and there are a number of passionate and heartfelt lovemaking scenes, the emotional intensity of which rapidly increase as the tale progresses. This novel has a strong plot and is also one sexy read!

Although much of the plot concerns Sophie and Bruce at the house party, we also get to meet other agents, including their handler Aries and Sebastien Thorne and his wife Cordelia, the hero and heroine of A Heartless Design. The villains and their methods are truly evil and there is never a dull moment. I recommend A Reckless Soul to readers who enjoy a Regency romance, especially those who enjoy some adventure, mystery and suspense and a strong male and unconventional female lead.

UNCONVENTIONAL HEROINE

I was given a copy of this book to review by the publisher. I have read other works by this author before. She has the knack of drawing the reader in to the story right from the first page. Her stories although set in the regency period are always that bit different from the norm. This particular tale is no different. Sophie is a spy working for Zodiac, she works alone. That is till she finds herself paired with Bruce another operative.

This is a fast moving and interesting read with many twists and turns. I love the way this author manages to push the boundaries in her period romances but at the same time make it believable. Great characters I particularly liked Sophie, she's my kind of heroine, with a very descriptive and flowing style I loved it.

I loved the first book in this series and I was anxious to read this one. The narration was great but, for some reason, I found the book dragged a bit.

That being said, the characters were quite interesting. Sophie is strong, prefers to work alone, and willing to do what it takes to complete her missions. Bruce is pretty much the same. When they are assigned together, sparks fly - in a few ways.

Good overall but just a bit under 5 stars.

Another great read. Romance and adventure .

2nd book in the series and I read it in a day. Her stories are truly romantic with just enough sex without messing up the beat of the story. The characters are Lords and Ladies that do something other than attend the next ball. The storyline is exciting and the cast is believable in their roles.

Sophie is a spy in Zodiac as is Bruce although they did not know about each other until this mission. Posing as a married couple they are looking for a traitor. When they are found out, much murder and mayhem ensues.

There's a certain unreality to this series that bugs me a little. I liked Sophie, except for her inability to get out of her own way. Bruce was a little more difficult to like. The house party sounded kind of awful, but the villain died, so that was good, I guess.

This book had a lot more sex than the previous book in the series, which was surprising but did fit the characters and situation well.
I'm taking a break to read something a little different, but do plan on reading the rest of the Zodiac series soon!

Another entertaining book in the Secrets of the Zodiac series. The characters are interesting and the plot fast moving. I returned to up my rating. The books have me hooked. I am impressed how unique each on is. Though a few characters run through, each plot is wonderfully different.

If wanting to slip back into time for a perfect escape this is the one to read. I was wanting just that and was given the unexpected opportunity to do so with a author that I have not read before. being able to read someone I have not before is like going on a treasure hunt seeking a rare gem for to admire and savor. I have found this to be the case in the author especially since I immensely enjoy a trip back in time but want it to be filled with lots of adventure fired with romance. This is what I was wanting from this author which she promptly delivered as soon as I began to turn the pages. Espionage is a exhilarating read for sure but it must have the right characters to pull it off. They must have bolder than life personas that know how to dance well together which is delivered very well in this novel. This also happens to be part of a series but no worries it did not matter that I had not read previous one to enjoy this one. You are introduced to Sophie seeing how she works as a agent in the Zodiac. She is also the only woman in this group which in that time was uncommon of a way to live being women were only viewed in very limited ways very few good and lots bad if their paths strayed from the dictates of society. Being the lot of a woman in this time was limited you realize right away she is a brave soul to continue in this dangerous path having been rescued long ago when very young after her mother's death. She is paired up with a dashing agent named Bruce on a very serious mission that could lead to very serious consequences if not completed. But upon their meeting of each other the sparks do fly which chuckling while reading rubbed my hands together knowing I was in for quite the adventure with these two. The sights and sounds provided for this adventure are very vivid that you can experience with how things were enjoying every minute. The budding relationship between these two is also quite exhilarating because as a reader I know what I want but can these two get it together without screwing it up. Mystery and intrigue has the most perfect balance in here leaving you at times on the edge wondering who will be the victor, hoping for the goal to be reached soon. Twists and turns that leave you breathless fueled with the right amount of heat to a romance that you gladly read grows. Secrets revealed that you do not see coming or thought would be the outcome adds to the excitement. Really though you are coasting along wanting love to truly be the victor here which is delivered quite satisfactorily and worth the reading to see how and when it happens. Received a copy for a honest review.

I loved the protagonist of this novel immediately. While it took me a minute to warm up to Cordelia because she is more a woman of her time. Sophie, on the other hand, is wonderful and spirited as the only female spy for the Zodiac. Much to her dismay, she gets paired with another spy (not to mention a Lord) Bruce to impersonate a married couple to obtain vital information for the Zodiac. At first the two clash terribly, they don't trust each other even though they have both been entrusted as spies to the same organization. Bruce thinks it's beyond foolish to let a woman into the spy game and Sophie, who had high hopes a fellow spy would be more open to see what a female spy could bring to the table, is immediately disenchanted with him. they both go to great lengths to prove themselves the superior spy, and while I think they were well-paired and on equal footing intellectually and skillfully, Sophie was the one who had more to bring to the table as far as knowledge of her fellow human beings. A couple passages struck home to me in a way I did not expect from a historical spy romance from the 1800's (edited passage):
Sophie was glad to have a topic to focus on. “So you did. Here’s the question: what’s the first thing a woman thinks when she meets a man?”
“She.… I don’t know. I give up. Tell me what a woman thinks on seeing a man.”
Sophie said, with deliberate calm, “She thinks, How can he hurt me?”
Oomph. My first reaction was oh, yeah, things have changed, but have they really? Incredibly insightful and it was a small turning point in their relationship, as well as a way for Bruce to be a better spy, as he used the advice later on and it ended up saving their lives. Another incredibly insightful passage:
“But it makes you little better than a—” Her eyes blazed. “Than a what, Bruce? First you taunt me, then kiss me, and now you think you can judge me? I suppose you never used your charm to get a secret out of a woman, hmm?”
He looked away for one second. She hissed in triumph. “I see. And how many women? But you would never think to call yourself what you were just about to call me. It’s different, isn’t it? Because you’re a man. And men make the rules.”
Whew. Double standards are forever alive and well.

A Reckless Soul by Elizabeth Cole is an entertaining espionage thriller set during the Regency period. The "Zodiac" is a secret spy network formed to protect the crown and mother England. There are multiple scenes with action, adventure, and near death experiences for our heroes. Although it is the second book in the Secrets of the Zodiac series, it is truly a stand alone book as I didn't feel like I was missing something by not having listened to the first book in the series.

The story focuses on the relationship between Sophie Bertrand and Bruce Allander who are teamed up to work undercover on a case where government secrets are being sold to Napoleon from a member of the nobility. Up until this point in time, all Zodiac agents worked alone, so the first half of the book is a competition between Sophie and Bruce as to who is the most skilled at their job. In the second half of the story, Sophie and Bruce slowly learn to appreciate the other and realize how similar and compatible they are.

Marian Hussey did a fantastic job narrating. She really brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. Marian's narration definitely contributed to my enjoyment of this book, raising my overall satisfaction by at least one star. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review. In short, I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and recommend it!

This is a review for author Elizabeth Cole and this is book 2 from the Secrets Of The Zodiac series.

Set back in the early 1800 Europe time period 2 spies are put together to join forces to help their organization against evil forces that threaten to cause disaster for their country. Sophie is a street wise actress/spy who does whatever it takes to get the job done. Bruce is a lord/spy who works with his servants to tend his estates land. Both knew this job could be dangerous but they did not know exactly how dangerous it would be.

I am not really into historical novels but I actually liked this book. The story line was well worth the read and the characters had depth to their them and they worked well together. There was no complicated story or no twists and turns so you did not know where you were at and that is a nice change from other spy thrillers out there.

Sophie has lots of disguises and fly's by the seat of her pants and no one really know the real Sophie. Bruce is a planner and very methodical on how he works. Bring these 2 together and you have murder, lies, betrayal and romance.

Any one who likes historical romance novels will enjoy getting and reading this book.

A friend of mine recommended this book to me via GoodReads and as I occasionally read Historical Fiction, I thought I'd give it a go, especially whilst it is still at the promotional price on Amazon. I'm very glad that I did. Although this is Book 2 in the Secrets of the Zodiac series, you don't have to have read the first one (although I will be now, plus any others I can get!).

The story is very well-written with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout. I got the mole wrong but I'm so very glad that I did. I loved how it was written and all fell into place. This book swept me away to the Regency era where life for a woman, let alone a lady, was so very different, with different rules and regulations that she was supposed to follow. Put an independent woman in the mix who knows how to look after herself, along with a male who thinks that she isn't capable, and you're in for an explosive combination which makes for a terrific read.

I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the lookout for more in this series. Definitely recommended to all History Fiction fans out there.

So I got this book as a review copy, which was a new experience.
Okay, I was sitting here going "Is it a three or a four?" and based on the overall story I decided it was a solid four. The only thing that was shaky for me was the tragic misunderstanding (which, I'll admit is a trope that makes me pull my hair at times), but the author managed to pull it off. Some twists and turns, but for someone who reads a LOT of these and has reader omniscience... the twists weren't complete surprises. HOWEVER, they were very well done.
The hero was solid and likable, but the heroine COMPLETELY stole the story. BADASS babe. Yes. And I liked the ending because and THAT was an awesome moment of both character growth on the hero's side, and consistent characterisation on the heroine's. (seriously, that spoiler is spoiler-y, not nominally so, but definitely). Recommend. Seriously. Definitely.

(eta: somehow there was techno weirdness and this review moved to the wrong title, so I'm fixing that now)

This book drew me in with the first chapter. Right away, readers are aware that Sophie is not a typical Regency Romance heroine. It was a pleasant surprise! Sophie and Bruce's romance is refreshingly unique. I love how the novel unfolded; I was interested in the story the entire time and couldn't wait to see how it all got resolved. Spoiler*** The only thing I didn't like was their free pass to sleep with other people while they are "working". It's a nice thought- Sophie being given the same freedoms one would forgive a man for- however in practice, I can't believe that either of them would be happy afterwards, should that scenario actually happen. I needed an epilogue that took place a little farther into the future, in order to see how they dealt with such an event (or several events). Overall, I would recommend this book and would definitely read more books in the series.

I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is book 2 in Elizabeth Cole's "Secrets of the Zodiac" series. Set in England during the Napoleonic Era, it is a well done combination of romance and mystery. Like most Regency heroines, Sophie Bertrand is intelligent, independent and prone to speaking her mind. In this novel however, she is something more. She is Libra - a member of the British top secret intelligence agency known as Zodiac. She is sent on a mission with another Zodiac agent to uncover a mole in the British government. Sparks fly, and along with mystery, romance is in the air. This is a bit more than your typical story featuring Aristocratic Britain as a backdrop. The action kept me engrossed, with several twists and turns along the way. I have now read both books 1 and 2 in this series, and greatly enjoyed each of them. I can't wait to start # 3!

This was an awesome book!

The only problem was I could not put it down when starting to read it!

Being an Afrikaans reader there were a few words that I had to look up! But I see at as a learning curve.

The descriptions gave me the feeling I'm sitting on the border watching everything.

The style was very exceptional! It felt like I was there, experiencing and walking every step they did.

I would like to recommend this book to all my friends when it is officially launched.

Many thanks and I now it's too soon but I will be on the look out for future books!

May this book reach no 1 as I think it deserve.

Blessings

The first quarter of the book was a hard slog since Hero and Heroine were so antagonistic towards each other, and I considered abandoning at Chapter 7 because it was so tiresome.

However I had enjoyed the first book in the series and decided to give it a chance, and I am glad I did.

The plot began to move along when they started their assignment at Carterhaugh Manor. It became an engaging mystery and a good venue for them to learn to work with each other, and eventually come to appreciate one another's talents and fall in love.

The obligatory misunderstanding/fight/break up had to occur (I guess) and I feel their reunion was a bit quick, but I did end up enjoying their HEA.

A Reckless Soul holds your attention from beginning to end. Sophie and Bruce solved the mystery, rid the world of a couple of despicable villains, and fell in love. What more could you ask from a story? Well, maybe one more little surprise at the end.

I switched between the kindle and audio versions of A Reckless Soul. Marian Hussey is a wonderful narrator. She brings the characters to life and helps make the story even more enjoyable.

I found this hard to rate. I'm not really sure how I feel - I loved some bits and hated others. In theory, I should've loved this but something just put me off. It was just very all over the place. Sophie and Bruce were both strong characters with complex backstories and separately I mostly liked both of them - but together the romance grated on my nerves. I don't know - I just don't think this was my cup of tea.

Usually the heroine in historical romances are "innocent" young ladies who become "compromised" when found with a man, but Sophie Bertrand, one of the Zodiac agents, uses her beauty and body as part of her repertoire in defense of her adopted country, England. Pair her with another agent who loathes who and what she is, and the plot is ripe for danger, excitement, and romance(?).
