CRYO: A Changed World

Rate this book
If you awoke to find that humankind had been annihilated, could you survive?

John's dreams have crumbled. A global corporation, CRYO, kidnapped him, froze him and sent him to the future, only to fade into history as he slept. Now, John and his podmates are in a new and strange world that's far from anything they've ever known.

With a strange creature having cut their already dwindled numbers, the fight for survival has begun. There's already discontent amongst the small group of survivors. And, as John heads out into the unknown with a small splinter group, there's just one question; what will he find?

Writing this review gives me a singularly difficult problem: if I write more than the barest outline of A Changed World, I would be giving away the entire plot of this highly entertaining and complicated sequel to the Cryo Series! But I have fallen in love with these books (and with Geoffrey Wakeling's writing) so much I would be doing a disservice not to put down as much as I can.

John had thankfully woken up to discover not everything went awry in the Cryo experiment. Something triggered their pods to thaw, releasing him and his pod mates to what is left of the Cryo lab. Nothing seems off at first, except for no other sign of human life in the lab. They manage to make their way out and rediscover Earth. It's a better place at first glance but then, where are the other humans? Are they the last ones, the endangered species in danger of extinction?

After John and a small group of mates leave the growing dictatorship in the lab, they have a chance to feel what the pioneers of old did. There is so much that they'd only seen in textbooks, and some new things they hadn't seen anywhere at all. It's a chance to explore, to pit their wits against Mother Nature and whatever else there is out there, and to simply adapt to survive.

It's not inconceivable that we could drive ourselves to extinction. In my opinion, we're already doing a dandy job of it. But what happens to the world if we totally destroy it's environment? And if, by chance, there is a remnant of humans that crawl out of the woodwork in the aftermath? Could they thrive in such an alien environment?

It boggles the mind, yet such a scenario could definitely come true. But, it never had, in my mind, in such a spectacular and different way that Geoffrey Wakeling conceived it in A Changed World!

Although this is not my usual genre, this book was really good. It is very well written and the detail the author puts in to it allows you to imagine exactly what he is writing.
In a world where humans, who are virtually extinct, awake to a planet that is now run by aliens. Those two different worlds come together to work for the greater good. After a few misunderstandings, lack of trust, and different outlooks, things begin to change for both the aliens and humans alike. Adjusting to a new world is different for the humans, but the aliens do all they can to help out. In the end, both come together to go against a common enemy. Kudos to Geoffrey for writing a sci fi book that is different from other alien books. It is not the typical alien story one would read.

I've been looking forward to reading this book ever since I read the first in the series. I was not disappointed; it was well worth the wait! This book is fantastically imaginative, while at the same time being written in such a way that you can clearly picture the events in your mind, as well as being able to see the possibility of the events in this book actually being a possible future for our planet. The characters are well-rounded, the plot moves at a nice pace, and the descriptions are so amazing you can easily imagine yourself in to the story. I can't wait to read more!
