Day of the Dead Girl

Rate this book
Death is never the end of the story.
Coroner Sam Castillo will learn this the hard way, when a supernatural serial killer targets her hometown just as she moves back. A skeptical woman of science, Sam butts heads with her spiritual mother Ana, a leader of a witch coven specializing in Brujeria. But when the coven's Brujas start turning up murdered, Sam and Ana must work together to find the killer and save their town's Day of the Dead festival from turning into an occult bloodbath.
As if sharing a bathroom with her mom wasn't hard enough.

Now, when I tell you A.j. Lee was my favorite wrestler growing up I don’t want you to think I’m biased bc of it (I definitely am😭) I think the story is getting off to a really good start and I’m excited to see where it goes in the next volume. I’m not the biggest fan of this art style though, but that’s very much a me thing when it comes to aesthetics😂

As a first issue of a book it holds much promise - the natural contrast between the witchery and religion of the Mexican Day of the Dead and the cold hard science of the autopsy technician. Some people know ghosts don't exist, some people are wishing desperately to commune with certain ones and are failing - so when the title character crops up we're poised nicely for what might have been a fine series. But then (a) all I saw was the first issue and (b) Diamond Books flucked things up. So who's to say - or, who among the living is to say? Certainly this has four star potential.

Solid first issue. I long for a day that the token cringey spanglish dialogue isn't littered all over our mexican-american medi but aside from that, everything worked. The art is beautiful. We don't see enough beautiful Latina women in comics <3

First, let me say that the many artists who helped complete this graphic novel, your artwork is beyond beautiful and made the story come alive. The story was well thought out with foreshadowing and a theme of being proud of who you are and where you came from. I enjoyed the novel overall and would like to see something again from the authors and artists.

3.5 stars for sure. Who knew Aimee Garcia was venturing into the world of comics? This was a fascinating read. I'll be eagerly awaiting the trade paperback release.

Wonderful tribute to Latino culture (Dia De Los Muertos and Brujas) with strong female protagonists and absolutely exquisite, vibrant art.
